I am trying so hard to paint this way. It’s so difficult because I feel like when I’m painting it looks undone but yet this is what I love about impressionistic painting. I need to just do one like this and se where it takes me. I tend to fiddle too much. I’m somewhere between impressionistic and realism. Thank you 🙏
Thank you, yes it is a struggle to break out of old habits. But rewarding over time. Keep the little brushes hidden away and learn how versatile a bigger brush can be. 😊

That is magic !! The Painting is better than the photo - I love the layers in the bushes and flower section on the right - I notice that as soon as you create darker shadows , you have created sun and light .. you cannot have shadows without sun ☀️ beautiful 💜

How do lights then not get contaminated with previous lights? I love how your colors are fresh crust alive ... (you get the idea)

I benefit so much from this exercise that I start each day with a 30 minute 'sprint' (The only issue for me is finding different subjects). It reminds me of exercises for improving basketball free throws and a golf swing: Do it repeatedly without time to think and allow the creativity to come out. It's also akin to stretching before exercising. This 'sprinting' is invaluable, thanks Malcolm.

Question: Or Idea: Can you do a video of steps to take or things to check when you know your “Paintings Gone Wild”. Lol. By wild I mean painting was going great then next thing you realize, it’s so so wrong. Ex. Perspective was good, then it’s gone, or I fix the darks, then move to bright areas, lose darks And it looks terrible again. Lol. Maybe a check list of 5 or more basic questions to ask of your artwork/product or yourself about your work to help reground your painting and proceed. Thank you for your time

There are some unpredictable results. You have to accept that and work on the next. All part of the process. 😊

A great lesson! Simply and clearly explained. You have not only a talent for painting, but also a gift for learning! It is priceless to me. Sometimes I learn to paint by trying to copy the pictures I like and figure out how someone painted it that achieved this effect? How did he do it and why it doesn't work for me :)) And here it turns out that sometimes you just need to pick up a bigger brush ... In this short lesson you showed me in a wonderful way how to boldly start painting. Best regards from Poland :))

I love this! If I did a piece or exercise like this and liked it and wanted to refine it a little, what would be your next step?
Refining usually means making the shapes smaller. If that is the goal then use thinner paint to make refining easier.
@@MalcolmDewey i was thinking that too. I guess smaller shapes makes it more detailed, being the opposite of a loose, impressionist painting.

Looks like possibly cad yellow deep maybe yellow ochre. Toning a panel a neutral color helps to judge light and dark values more easily. It also helps to create color harmony when the little bits of color show through.
It is yellow ochre. Just a warm tone to aid the process as described by Gallery Bry. Mostly I leave it white to keep colors bright, but a tone is good practice too.
Hello, your oils seems to be very fluid. Do you use any medium with them?
Not during painting. They are soft out the tube. But if your paint is firm add a few drops linseed oil and work it in before painting. A bristle brush also helps.

Yes for beginners, take a look and decide if it looks right for you.
Your paint is so much more creamy than mine. I have tried added a touch of linseed oil, but it is still not fluid enough. I am using Old Holland, Gambling...maybe my white is a bit dry...
Surprised to hear that. Both those paints should be buttery. If you use linseed only add a few drops to titanium white. Also use a bristle brush.
@@MalcolmDewey thanks, I suspected that my titanium was on the dry side. I will do that. I do use a bristle brush. Love your demos. After 40 years of painting professionally, I am learning to paint.
