This was so helpful! I haven't done any watercolors for decades and I realize now that the main reason was that all of my teachers failed to teach me properly. One said to me: don't paint as if it scares you, but that's what his instructions did for me! I must watch your other videos. I think I am going to enjoy myself so much with the watercolors I received as a gift yesterday.
Peter... I love how you "teach" thank you..... learned so much in this video.... You teach in such an "untechnical" manner and yet with such detail that can be used in all watercolor paintings.... so glad I found you.... looking forward to repeating this video today to practice what you have shared..... again THANK YOU
That is a really timely video for me. I've been painting in watercolor for over 20 years. Ups and downstairs along the way, and presently experiencing a pretty extended slump.
You use a lot of negative painting as well. Your style and end result are beautiful. I really need to get back to watercolor and try this. I think I will devote a sketchbook to practice your techniques. I just love the final result. I’ve been painting mostly in gouache and my painting has gone downhill due to health problems and concentration issues with pain, but I miss watercolor. Your style is one I was never taught, but the end result was always my desire.😊
You're right - I use a LOT of negative painting in my work, always. I'm really sorry to hear of the health problems and concentration issues - I hope dabbling in watercolour may go some way to helping you with that. Thank you for the comment.
Дорогая, желаю Вам скорейшего исцеления и пусть акварель и любовь близких помогут в жтом🙏 Желаю здоавствовать и процветать максимально долго!!! Привет из Украины💛💙
I’m totally new to watercolour and have watched a lot of good talented videos but your approach was just right for me. Slow voice and good teaching. Please continue to create more for beginners, I think you would help a lot of us out there understand what watercolour really is. Thanks so much .
Great to also have the timelapse at the end! Repeating the technique with a similar, but somewhat more complex composition as in the original demo helped me consolidate your teaching and get a glimpse of how the technique could be taken further - thank you!
Thank you, Peter! This has taken me right back to the roots of my watercolour. I haven't lost the joy of playing with it and 'seeing what happens', of watching paint flow into paint to do something wonderful, of landscapes, big skies, old barns, farmhouses, fields and trees... Since I moved, the landscape has changed, and within me the longing for those open skies doesn't go away... Even so, the techniques still work for the ancient 13th, 14th, 15th century buildings of the local town. I just need to translate what I know into those beautiful buildings, the steep, tree covered valley side from my windows, the rock colours and formations so different... to stop feeling inadequate and remember just who I am as an artist. Through your videos, you're reminding me of the techniques and colour play I love, and when health and weather permit, to 'just go there, get on with it and stop being so tense about the results!' And to go back to using loose, larger paper (of which I have plenty!) and not tying myself to a smaller sketchbook all the time... Daft, really, here I am giving myself, and hearing you give us, me, the exact same advice I gave / give to my students. Thanks again, Peter.
You're very welcome Mrs Barnabas - thank you for your very enjoyable and insightful comments... all good advice (and, yes - sometimes we have to offer it to ourselves as a reminder... we are our worst critics)
I’ve an interest in negative watercolor and have books on the subject but I must say it’s much better watching your video, very helpful indeed. This loose, easy style is quite enjoyable to watch and learn from…thanks for sharing your techniques
👋 Peter, thanks so much for this amazing video, I have been painting water colours on and off for a long time time. I find drawing with the brush an amazing way to paint a picture, I will practice more often now, thanks once again. Xx
Thank you for this, it’s explained a lot for me as a beginner, so I’m going to give it a try as it makes total sense as I’m not a good drawer, so I’ll let my paint do that for me, thank you.
Aprpo of nothing (we met briefly at Patchings) today at a art group I did a scene of rocks and waterfalls and I used the seemingly simple (Woolley) method of chucking carefully a blue, red and yellow and made something from it all. My Wife when she saw it said, and I quote, that's beautiful. So thank you for the demos you give us, after 20+ years I finally got that reaction. Keep up the great work 😁 Pete's art. Long hair, discussed the grand circle trip with you.😊
A result! Nice one Peter.... I'm pleased it was helpful to you! Thanks for the great comment - I wish you well, and probably catch up with you at next year's show...
New viewer and subscriber … I love the demo and Timelapse results and will give this a try … today! I am 8 months into watercolor … 5 painting regularly and at 69 I am not averse to listening (and taking) advice 😊. Thank you!
@@peterwoolleyartist I have done 3 paintings drawing with my brush ... slight progress ... need a lot more practice!! BUT, what fun this method is - I love it!
Great video for me this Is the essence of watercolour painting your ability of negative painting Is very well done , your explanation and demonstration are excellent 👍
I've just discovered you. I went to hadrians wall and was inspired by your video and the views at housesteads fort. So I'm gonna get back into watercolour painting. I love your painting style and I think I can match it using your tips. Thanks Peter.
Your painting ability is amazing! I find myself using my left over paint to do cursive writing, play around making shapes so not even close to your level but feel painting with the brush is easier for me than drawing anything with a pencil! Ty!!
Fantastic approach. The juxtaposition of a well-explained, tutorial that emphasizes a single concept, followed by a time-lapse of that concept being employed with all of the other tricks of the trade, is bloody brilliant! The speed viewing of the follow-on piece was indispensable for me to pick up the rhythmic “swing” of technique applications. It’s otherwise impossible to pick up the forward planning that is occurring live in the painter’s mind; for as much as a painter says (and believes) that he’s working without planning, it just isn’t possible for the professional. You have a winning teaching formula here. I have your books, and know your techniques, still, I can say this was a revelation to me. My dream would be to see you walk out the techniques of Sir William Flint. I love to see those demos where you’re seen grappling with something not already in your ken. It’s an exploratory surgery of your brain.
Thank you so much! I feel this instructive video is going to breathe new life into my painting experience. I am just so excited to put it into practice and on that note I am off to do just that.
Wow! What a wonderfully useful video. I can’t wait to try out the technique. I have a really tight, detailed painting style and I’ve been thinking of trying a looser style so this is the perfect video for me. I love the colours, especially in the second painting. Thank you 🙏

This was one of the best explanations and demonstration of how to draw with a brush I've ever seen. You are a very talented instructor. Thank you.

So helpful. I dont want to be fiddly. Just bought a large brush to push myself into that "flow" you demonstrated so beautifully. Thank you.❤
Agreed. Bob Burridge warns against "tickling the painting to death". This is a great video for sure.
