I'll always have a place in my heart for HP laptops. My very first one I had when I was in college was an HP pavilion dv6809wm. it was a good performer, I loved it's touchbar up on top, as well as the wireless infrared remote that you can put in the smart card slot to control Windows Media center. I owned it for a year, and the motherboard fried from a bad USB hub, and they did a free out of warranty motherboard replacement for me. Then I got a 12 cell expanded battery, back in the day when you can get laptop batteries that elevated the back of the laptop for also additional cooling and great ergonomics, that thing was great for an all-day performer for taking notes in lecture halls and stuff like that. When I wasn't doing college work, I spent a lot of time playing Crysis, Eve online, and other various games of the time. It's good that they're being competitive again.
Thanks for sharing ! I love Windows Media Center, my HTPC is still using it. I tried all the TV recording software and none matches it. 12 cell battery pack !
sadly the whole notebook is plastic. Even the haptics of my Omen 17 are "cheap" with metal Top and Display. But the only comparison i have is a Unibody MacBook Pro (so the case are 3 metal parts) from 2010, which is still in use. My older notebook, any Acer 17" from 2007/2008 around, was also much more stable than the HP Omen 17. All 3 Notebook i ever had (1x Acer, 2x Apple), i never was scared of breaking some parts, especially on the hinge. I even throw my MacBooks on the bed/couch etc., because they were robust enough. I bet the Omen 17 would break after a few throws. I am very, very careful now with the Omen 17, luckily, the most of the time its used as "Multimedia"-PC for my TV and HiFi system on the desk and i dont open/close the display very much. Since its only a "cheap" gaming notebook for me, i can live with it. But for any mobile usage, i would prefer more robust designs from business class notebooks, Apple, Lenovo and so. Even a cheap lenovo envy convertible in 14" is much more robust than the HP designs.

Hi Stephen, thank you very much for reviews. You are doing great job! I watched also HP Pavilion 15t review (with an Intel i5) on your channel. In comments to the those video there's a discussion about heating problem of 15 inch version with an Intel i7 9750 on board. Do you think it is chassis problem only? Have you observed a big difference in cooling system between Pavilion 17t and 15t? I am thinking about buying the 17t version with i7 9750. I believe it is not OK to buy a new device and start in the first week with a repasting it... According to your test 17t model looks really well balanced, and that's really strange that 15t version can not handle this CPU. I had already bad experience with MSI GL75. Ordered those MSI with i7 9750H and 1660Ti. It failed all my tests... 93c - 97c on CPU in Far Cry 5 Ultra. Huge throttling, up to 30% according to AIDA64. Throttle just exactly after boosting to 3.9 GHz. I have experienced some throttling even in normal use cases (browsing + copy files + antivirus software). So I have sent it back to the seller.
Hi Yevgen, thanks for your support! I am pleased you are reading through the comments too. Yes, I did have someone say their 9750h ran really hot on the 15" , I think he even repasted it. He had to jump through lots of hoops to get it running OK. Perhaps it was an isolated issue, such as his heatpipes not making good contact with the die. I certainly had a good experience on the 17" model , in case you didn't see the actual review here it is ua-cam.com/video/-ai245UvBWg/v-deo.html
Thanks ! Well, the Aero 15 with the 4k OLED had the nicest screen I have seen - there is only one Mfr of the screen (Samsung) so all the 15" OLEDSs are the same. Not a gaming screen but its lovely.
What price differences here the HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-dk0012la is worth 1000 dollars approximately 840,000 Chilean pesos I would like to have bought that with the 1660ti instead of this with a 1650 that is short for the price I like hp's greetings great video ;)
I'm facing a choice paralysis watching your videos lol Are you planning a mega comparison video where you compare all the laptops you've reviewed recently?
Hi Rex. I just did the Razer 15 v Zephyrus S v MSI GS65 , that took ages. Now the new stuff is rolling in so I will be doing comparisons like the TUF A15 Vs Helios 300
I've recently returned one, bc the touchpad was making an annoying and loud click on the left hand side after each click, when the pad hit the chassis. Is that normal?
You would be best with a decent screen, a six core CPU and a dedicated GPU, preferable GTX 1650 or higher, probably 2 x 8 GB RAM at minimum and an SSD as the boot drive and ideally a larger 2.5" drive for your file. Most laptops can be upgraded - this Pavilion will be OK once you add the extra RAM and storage. Asus is releasing some nice AMD laptops in April, the TUF A15 or A17 will have up to an 8 core/16 thread CPU and I suspect the price will be less than $1200. The new Dell G5 will have the same and that starts at $750, probably with the 6 core Ryzen 4600H. If it were me I would probably wait till April and see what the reviews are like on these new AMD laptops are like
Thanks ! For gaming the 1660Ti is better, even if its a max Q like I have here. Even when paired with an i5 9300h. Ideally, to do the comparison I would like the same GPU in both laptops...
Yes unfortunately. I will compare the difference with one DIMM in the review. Fortunately you can buy another stick fairly cheap but it would have been nice to have it included
I actually don't mind computers that have two memory slots with only one populated. It's less waste when you want to go upgrade your memory. Plus the performance advantage with Intel mobile processors on single Channel vs dual-channel isn't as significant as with Ryzen. judging by what has been shown in this video, seems to be a pretty well-balanced machine.
@@TheNiteNinja19 I actually put in another stick for these tests, mentioned that in the video. I recall with the GTX 1650 dual channel didnt make much difference, hopefully the same is true with a 1660 MQ. Certainly I was happy with the way it had the PL1 set 👍

It's a pretty good laptop for the money (my model HP Gaming Pavilion 17-cd0615ng). But after a year the cpu fan stopped working. Getting a replacement spare part is almost impossible. HP support is so terrible and unhelpful, it's not possible to make an appointment for repair/change the piece properly. They have no phone helpline, force you to use Whatsapp for communication, suddenly answer you in French ! and then offer you to send in the laptop for 2-4 weeks to get the fan replaced. Come on. I am still looking for a correct spare part but they are hatdly offered anywhere and totally overpriced then.
It's a disappointment that they only come with greed/ purple coloured led backlight ,while Asus fx505 comes with much better lighting at far lesser cost
i dont know.... 800$ for a plastic bomber? My Mum got a 14" convertible from Lenovo for 500$, full aluminium, very robust, very nice battery runtime and awesome FullHD touchscreen. Yes, the performance isnt comparable to any i5/i7+ dedicated GPU, but at all, i would prefer a cheap, small, robust notebook over a "hi performance" notebook for the same money. I got a Omen 17, luckily the main reason isnt mobility or a robust case - otherwise my Omen 17 would be "crap". The only reason i got it was the RTX 2080 (full size), any other 2080 notebook cost at least 400$ more. And all i wanted was a Notebook with a little bit mobility for playing instead of transport my gaming rig+screen+kb+mouse and as a "desktop-repacement" for my living room. Yes, i wont be happy with any HTPC, i also want to play on my TV - actually in 1080p, and soon on an OLED TV in 1440p/120 Hz or 4k/60 Hz As long you dont need maximum performance, i would go for anything -except HP lol
If they had thrown in another stick of RAM and a hard drive ..st least the panel isnt one of those 60% sRGB ones...it manages the power well, ran cool but I am concerned with when its loaded to the hilt it just freezes like in that AIDA64 test. Had to power it down.
I feel it's a rather well balanced machine as it is, especially at the price point. that's the unfortunate thing, the moment you stick the "gaming" tag on anything, it goes up by two hundred bucks. But it's a fair contender with user upgradability options.

Yes, i wont be happy with any HTPC, i also want to play on my TV - actually in 1080p, and soon on an OLED TV in 1440p/120 Hz or 4k/60 Hz
As long you dont need maximum performance, i would go for anything -except HP lol
No thunderbolt 3
They reserve that for the Omen line
thank you sir
I will go to the dell g3 for better upgrade in the future for GPU
is 16 GB Ram better also dont mind my name its my brothers old acc not trying to be racist
I bought it because i thought it had 1660 ti no max q, then i send it back and got refund.
Yeah, I wish they would make these things a bit clearer sometimes.
3:20 WTF?? No no no .. this is ... WTF ? AsUs a17 is better!
yeah, it was very rattly, never experienced that before in any laptop
This isn't normal. This is a manufacturing defect and you can let it repair by HP for free
17inch yet a maxQ gpu, tiny touchpad, single-channel ram, okish cooling, small battery, 60hz panel huh! What are you doing HP ?
If they had thrown in another stick of RAM and a hard drive ..st least the panel isnt one of those 60% sRGB ones...it manages the power well, ran cool but I am concerned with when its loaded to the hilt it just freezes like in that AIDA64 test. Had to power it down.
basically just in competition to to Acer's Nitro line, Asus TUF line.
I feel it's a rather well balanced machine as it is, especially at the price point. that's the unfortunate thing, the moment you stick the "gaming" tag on anything, it goes up by two hundred bucks. But it's a fair contender with user upgradability options.
@@riderinprogress yep, that's why I showed it against my 17" Nitro 👍
@@OWNORDISOWN yeah its really unfair to compare it to predator or strix line up.
Ich habs für 500€ gekauft neu
Das ist ein toller Preis !
