Hi David, I loved your treatment of this subject. It was spot on. It reminded me of Eric Metaxas's excellent book on the life of Martin Luther and that's honestly where my mind went initially.
There seems to be a pendulum that swings from corrupt authorities to Sola Scritura mindset. You can see it in Luther's life. He makes an effort to get back to true principles that were lost to various directives from the pope. He swung hard to the opposite extreme, NO DIRECTIVES FROM RELIGIOUS LEADERS AT ALL, relying entirely on the Bible, which was a good correction. The human problem was and is, however, that we are all subject to our own interpretations and applications, which reintroduces the possible element of corrupt leaders. Back and forth, Sola scriptura through interpretation and application, to an authority they disagree with, and back to Sola.
I love the marriage analogy! Prophets speak for God and Jesus Christ leads His church through Prophets! Hallelujah!

Most Protestants think that God continues speaking to man through the Spirit. The problem is, with this, there is a gross lack of unity. There are some 50-60,000 sects, each claiming the Spirit is speaking to them. Paul tells us that this is exactly why God gave apostles and prophets, to keep unity in the faith (Eph 4).

I think Trail's comments are great! But I don't think that our protestant brothers and sisters look at a lack of ongoing revelation in those terms. I think that they look at it more like the Lord gave them a sort of treasure map telling them all that they will ever need to reach heaven or gain eternal life. Like you pointed out, David, this might seem rational if you were raised with this idea. But it's not biblical. The Lord always used prophets and apostles to guide his people to heaven. He never just simply gave them a treasure map of sorts and said, "Good luck."
Furthermore, how does this treasure map type approach gather scattered Israel? The Lord solemly promised to gather Israel. He can not lie. We can see how vital prophets and apostles and the restored priesthood power are in this work. David's wonderful point about becoming a holy people is very important. The bride must be of one heart and one mind. Holy and righteous and faithful, or the groom can not go through with the marriage.

Since The Restoration is centered on continuing revelation, that the heavens are open, it makes perfect sense that Satan would put it in the hearts of men to fear continuing revelation, to believe that the heavens were closed. But that didn’t stop the Lord’s work!
Amos 3:7 “Surely, the Lord God will do nothing, save He revealeth His secret to His servants, the prophets.”
In 1 Corinthians 12-14, Paul counsels the Church to seek the best spiritual gifts, including the gift of prophecy.
If there is a body of true believers on the earth, they will seek for the gift of prophecy.
If they seek for it, they will find it.
When they find it, there will be prophets.
When prophets speak for the Lord, and we record what they say, we have new scripture!

2.) God will fulfill each one.

4.) Will God fulfill a prophecy without having a prophet to reveal it to? (NO!!)
5.) What do prophets do? Among many things, they write and document God’s words! That is the very essence of scripture!!
Hence, the canon of scripture can never be closed!

John 17 has always been my favorite passage of scripture. Is there any like it? The power and emotion of Christ pleading our cause to Heavenly Father distills upon my soul like no other. How can we not believe?!?

David, brilliant discussion. I think you ask the most pertinent question about 35 minutes into the video. "Become a holy people?" I'm not sure that our protestant brothers and sisters are trying to become a holy people.
I would hesitate to make such a broad statement as it can be easy to lose sight of that-even in the church. Those of us who seek are reminded daily, but i’d also say that there are many Christian’s who also have that desire.

I'm simply coming from a point of view where every single non-latter day saint Christian that I have ever come across says that JESUS CHRIST will somehow make them holy and that His work is a "finished" work and therefore, no active work on their part needs to take place.

I agree. Christianity was built upon justification (what Jesus did) and sanctification (what we can do). Martin Luther got rid of sanctification as ‘works’. Humans are disgusting swamp creatures whom God should stomp on but for unknown reasons he condescends and does not. Only Jesus can do anything. Humans should not bother to try. To quote Martin Luther “Go forth and sin. Sin boldly. Though you fornicate and murder thousands of times a week just believe and you are saved.” Only only protestants hold to that. Not Catholics, Orthodox or LDS believe sanctification is no matter.

when John wrote the book of Revelation he said not to add to it or take away from it. People who believe in the closed canon see John's comment and assume that he meant the New Testament, which was many years in the future.

testament as stated preaching for hire Micah 3:11,12, 2 Thes 2:3, Acts 20:29-30, 1 Tim 4: 1-3, 2 Pet 2: 1-3, 2 Tim 3: 1-7, Gal 1:6-8 Amos 8:11 all make it clear there will be an apostacy but probably the most profound prophecy in the Bible is Acts 3: 19-21 the day after the church was birthed and only a handful of days after Jesus Christ ascended into heaven in Acts 1: 9-11 When the Savior spoke the last time moments before he ascended into heaven. "And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up: and a cloud received him out of their sight.
and while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee,
why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which was taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." This scripture Acts 3: 19-21 Trail "Repent ye therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of
refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you; Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began" is the most profound prophecy in scripture. Every prophet since the world began spoke of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ before he comes again. Malachi tells us that before that great day shall come Elijah the prophet will also come as part of the restitution of all things. Daniel 2" 44,45 Isiah 2: 2-5. Before that day comes Matt: 24-14 the gospel of the kingdom shall be preached to all the world. This is the main mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
I just watched this and something instantly came to mind and prompted by the spirit is….. for everyone who feels the cannon is close is not ready to come to the fullness of Gods plan and cannot even follow what is already written. How can one want to follow anything more of what they struggle with what they already should follow. I dealt with a lot of people who tell me “your religion has too much rules” “you obey” “Jesus finished the work” so forth and so on. I’m so glad regardless of my activeness i never did fall to any other beliefs. A lot of people cannot even follow the commandments and things in the Bible asking any more is just too much to ask. When Jesus said it is finish he is saying his gift of salvation for us is done but our exaltation is determined on the choices and commandments and covenants we keep.
This reminds me so much of Jacob 5.... The Lord and the servants will try one more time to communicate and establish is gospel
From the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints and the Book of Mormon will teach through those books. There are so many that will still try to steer you elsewhere. Keep strong with the testimony you have received and scriptures will tell the Truth of what you now know and feel. Anti Christs seem to be everywhere to mislead een though members. The idea of a closed canon sounds surprisingly like the Jews of old who told Jesus "We have no need of thee, we have Moses and the prophets". It's not an exact quote but it's close. Basically, it's easy to follow a religion which does not tax your faith.
Take almost all major Abrahamic faiths in the world. The first thing that happens after apostasy is to close both cannon and revelation. This are very practical reasons for this… all too many pretenders to both arise once leaders from the prior generation pass on. So to keep them from disrupting both cannon and faith, the easy solution is to shut it off.
The other factor in play is most people are very biased towards following faith leaders that are very, very up there in years. Young prophets are a major exception, not a norm. Because of this, you don’t get a lot of time with a single prophet because old men tend to die with a little passage of time.
The modern Church of Jesus Christ seems to manage these challenges well, specifically by making young future leader apostles and giving them decades to both train up and for the Saints to become familiar and comfortable with them for when their time comes.
So simple yet mankind in all kindness tends to simply accept what honest preachers say. Even though the sins of the earth be as Scarlet, they can become white as snow through our love especially reaching out to the children!

The Book of Judges is a long stream of Israel turning away from God, and after a time, God sending a new Prophet, as the 70 Judges were also known, to bring them back. And that pattern repeats through the Kings and Chronicles, with wicked kings follwed by righteous kings, and with the New Testament. Yet somehow they think the nature of mankind changed when Jesus Christ visited, especially with Peter and Paul both stating otherwise?🤦🏻♂️
All we need is God's Word and His Will, He is sufficient. Proverbs 5-6 cautions us not to add to Gods word; "Every word of God is flawless, he is a shield to those who take refuge in him, do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar." Deut 4:2 warns us to not add or to take away from Gods commands. "Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it but keep the commands of the Lord.
I always ask closed canon people: what is Jesus’ word limit? How many words would you say he is permitted to speak from the bible to eternity? Those who believe they can impose a word limit on God are worshipping an idol not a living God.

Not only were Christians raised with the idea that the Bible is the only word of God, but if they didn’t believe that, they would have to accept the concept of living prophets and apostles, which certainly does not fit their agenda. The restoration includes prophets and apostles, so of course we believe in continuing revelation.

When the original Apostles died, their priesthood authority for the Church was lost, leaving only the local authority of Bishop as the highest remaining authority. That's why even the Pope is said to operate under a Bishop's authority.
But local authority is different from general authority, and Bishops are ordained by general authorities. Without Apostolic authority, the validity of the passing of Papal or Bishops authority in the Catholic Church is questionable.
I would have to say even if your husband doesn't talk to you Christ will turn to him!

So Zion is where the Lord God is to be found in the last days. Dwelling In The CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day saints.
The Lord is not going to be dwelling in the 46,000 churches of Born Again Evangelical Christainity. Hes going to be dwelling instead in Zion.
The Lord is not going to be silenced either by a closed cannon of scripture by learned men of Born Again Evangelist Christainity whatsoever at all. Instead the Lord is going to confound all those who believe in a closed cannon of scripture..... For the Lord God is going to continue to give revelation from out of Zion and later in from out of Jersualem. Its Bible prophecy that revelation from the Lord still continues upon the earth today through his prophets that
speak his mind and will to all the nations and that the heavens are open and God is speaking today.. And that the kings and queens of the earth will also come to Zion to learn for themselves of the ways of the Lord.. And then isaiah Chapter 2:2-3 will be fulfilled as the people flock to zion to learn of God's ways.
There's no such thing as a closed cannon of God's word because God's words can never cease or return back to him void.
Those who insist that the cannon is shut and God has no more words to say anymore to the nations of the world anymore in the last days
