Man I forget how much bungie would weave the Inner Light motif into so many tracks back in the day. I wish they did that with new tracks as much as they did with older tracks.
Let me tell yall a story I was around 8 when this mission first came out, spending countless days with my dad attempting to complete this mission while getting the rare exotic ship a thousand wings and let me tell you hearing this brought so much nostalgia I remember the day me and my dad completed it and now its back to make new memories with my dad still.
The strings at 0:33 are my favourite part of this track. It's so foreboding and conveys such an amazing sense of dread. The entire soundtrack to the Whisper mission is simultaneously building dread and making you anxious of what's to come, but also emphasizing the sense of "Holy shit I gotta go fast"
(From vanilla D2 up to the end of Season of Arrivals) The Taken were drawn to Io because it was in the process of being terraformed by the Traveler (it was considered the last place the Traveler touched), and so they were gunking up pretty much everything they could on the moon. The Vex also had a pretty sizable presence there as well, with a pretty major entrance into their network being housed there (the Pyramidion). One of the activities you could encounter there, pretty close to the Pyramidion in fact, was one that involved the Taken attempting to infiltrate the Vex network to further spread their corruption, which is just something they sort of naturally do even without a Taken King/Queen. As for Xol, after we defeated him on Mars, there was a mutual pull between him and the Taken on Io. It's kinda complicated, but Xol found a loophole in the Sword Logic where his death still technically proved the Logic true, and the analogy given was that he became a part of the blade instead of being the one wielding the blade. Thus he became an instrument to wittle the universe down to the Final Shape (Whisper of the Worm), and because that process was basically equivalent to the process of becoming a Taken, he had a similar status to Riven. Taken, but with so much power that other lower Taken would serve it like a general. TL;DR - Xol found a way to basically Take himself after he was killed on Mars, reforming himself into a weapon and pulling the same move as Oryx with the ToM. The biggest gathering of Taken at the time was on Io, and they were already in the process of getting into the Vex constructs because that's just how they roll. Xol was drawn to them thanks to his shenanigans, and the Taken were sort of pulled under his command because of his power.

I love the use of the Oryx horns in this so much
Really sounds like a portal 2 track. Especially considering the bit at 1:22 is pretty much identical to a section of the track “I am not a moron”
just soloed this in 2024
Love the dread feel in the music at 0:52 mark. It perfectly telegraphed this unrelenting force coming at you.
Guess what???
YOU'RE GOING BACK
BYYYYYE
☠️☠️ 1:53 times running out!!!!!!!! ☠️☠️
do you think we'll be able to get shadow of saturn anytime soon? i love hive music
God 1:06 is such ear candy
If you’ve ever played Alteric, it sounds like that music
Can someone explain what exactly they were up to here in this mission? Why are the Taken in a Vex Construct? Why was Xol there?
