Neil was scorching on this tour, I think playing with the young guys really fired him up. I've seen him 5 times, once solo, twice with the Horse, once with CSNY and on this tour with Promise of The Real. They were all amazing shows, but this one was the best, he played for about two and a half hours under a full moon in July and it rocked from start to finish. Long live Uncle Neil!
Not to people who know anything of his music beyond "Heart of Gold" or "Four Strong Winds". Very legitimate argument to be made for "On The Beach" being his crowning achievement as an album, way back when his soul was deeply implicated in the creative process.
FUCKEN SO COOL.... 59 year old lifetime Neil fan,,,,,,,,,,,,, started playing guitar after listening to neil for first time in 1969.......ive been playing ever since.......... I got my old Gibson les Paul out right now with the old fender tweed over cooking the tubes,, the knobs only go up to 10,,,, but I found some vice grips and cranked them up to about 13 playing revolution blues,,,,,,, had to let my Golden Retriever out,,,, He gets scared when Dad is Rocken out,,,,,,,, thanks Neil for a lifetime of playing the guitar...... Your as relevent today as you ever were.......
Thank you all for the beautiful comments!! Truly humbled! All I did was to be at the right place at the right time. Honestly, was debating all morning whether I should go. I did not have any buddies to accompany me. I bit the bullet and never looked back. Truly a great experience - only in Austin, Texas. The Whitewater Amphitheater is an amazing venue located on the Guadalupe River. Pot smoke flowing everywhere. ...I grew up in Zambia and fell in love with Neil after my brother brought home "4-Way Street" from the US in 1974 where he was studying at SIU - Carbondale. I became a revolutionary then. I lived in the Bay Area and would always be on the lookout for Neil in Half Moon Bay. :-) ...What an amazing Being and an influence on me. _/I\_
Man, I'm so glad this video exists and is still here. I keep coming back to it again and again. I believe I MAY (OK, I think I am) be the guy going "WOOOOO" at :38. Was at this gig, near this spot in the crowd, had seen Neil probably 20 times and "Revolution Blues" was my absolute #1 probably-will-never-see-live-but-would-kill-to song, and then he goes and busts it out in the encore with a full band for the first time in 40+ years. I'm normally not a "WOOOOO" guy, but it was involuntary. I make no apologies.
He was right. He's always been soooo ahead of his time it's scary. It's only ONE of the many reasons I LOVE this magically talented musician! 2017 now, everything he created decades ago is new again and again
LMAO. Typical Neil-can’t decide if he’s a left-wing hippie or a right-wing nut. You do realize that he originally wrote this song about a bunch of acid-fueled violent hippies, NOT as a warning about the government.
Rudo lf Yes, I’m aware it’s about Manson. Like I said, an acid-fueled hippie and his acid-fueled “Family.” As originally written this has nothing to do with being an “anti-government” song. Anti-social, maybe. The rhetorical bilge water that Manson spouted focused on the generation gap. Now “Powderfinger,” that’s another story.
I just realized that this is truly a rare recording. The only one of a live version in recent vintage. Willie NELSON showed up as a surprise and again - what a sight to see him play with his son, Lukas. ...Again, truly humbled. This was the last song he played at this venue at the Whitewater Amphitheater. Thank you Neil!! Love You!!
He was doing crazy one-off encores on this tour with these guys. I was totally psyched for F#ckin' Up in Portland (hadn't seen it since Weld), but the night before he'd done Here We Are In the Years and played Time Fades Away the night after. He did a Vampire Blues, too. This is phenomenal, thanks for capturing and for sharing.
Had on the beach as a senior in high school back in 76 when we did a lot of field partying. Must of had it on the car stereo or something when a schoolmate was pointing out the provocative lyrics. Back then I was more tuned into the .music but after that I did start to ponder them a bit more. So many years since I have heard this. And what a cool version.
It's a great band that rocks like a storm but also manages to NOT bury the singer with extraneous noodling, fills, etc. (You can discern every single word.) IMO, this was already the best song of OTB -- now, it's even deeper.
God he is always right on! I love the stuff that come out of his head and then you have his unbelievable sound, can’t get any better than this. Thank you for sharing.🌻✌️🦆
Favorite Neil album all time. No question dudettes and dudes. I’m a barrel of laughs w my carbine on and I got the revolution blues. Sing it bro. When the album came out in ‘74 everyone wanted another Harvest. Neil did what he wanted. Always. Album tanked but it’s his best in my stupid opinion.
One of my favourites too. Those lyrics are chilling. I read that, in the 70s, David Crosby absolutely refused to play this with Neil, arguing that it was too dark and `tempting fate`. Illustrative of how much deeper an artist Neil was relative to his CSN buddies.
Fuuuuuck. Neil Young is someone you can set your watch by but even better you can see him smash that timepiece into smithereens and watch as he reassembles it into a hundred thousand different things that make you forget all about time. I was looking for a live version of this song but had no idea I'd find such a murderous rendition from so recent. So much for burning out.
AWESOME! I just want to know one thing? Who posted that pop up ad over this that warns of 4 signs that you are having a heart attack!!!!! I'm listening to a electric, live, song Neil hasn't done in 30 years - OF COURSE - I'm having a heart attack!!!!!
This, among all the Neil Young songs i know (those of his 8 first main albums (7 first studio albums + Time Fade Away) + Sleep with Angels & Harvest Moon), is the undisputed best one IMO. I have the physical cds of Sleep with Angels & Harvest Moon since forever, and in them the only Neil Young songs i knew, until recently, where in these last months I've been going, in ascending order, through a Neil Young album list based on the list under "Albums" of the Neil Young discography in Spotify. (Where I've been "stuck" in the first 8 albums since I started more than half a year ago, constantly editing a google sheets where I'm rating each album and each song of each album, and I think after today I'm finally ready to move on to the next ones- gonna start with 2020's Homegrown though (since the songs were written in 1975), before going to 1976 Long May You Run) About the album, to me On the Beach is tied with Zuma as the best of the 8 (or 10 if you include Harvest Moon and Sleep with Angels), so at this moment I'm hearing these two albums one after the other to distinguish which is best (if I can).
Seen NY about 6 or 7 times but never seen this, a standout from my fave album. Never seen this live in any form so many thanks for posting. Perhaps I'll see it in person one day.
Smokin', rockin' version ! Seen Neil and POTR at Hyde Park London July 2019 Superb show. They preceded Bob Dylan and Neil commented when referring to some of his lyrics that they did not usually play in daylight !
When I first heard this on his album On the Beach I thought it could be about Charles Manson and never gave it much thought after that, figured that thought was bullshit and forgot about it. Many, many years later I found out Neil had met Manson and the song was in fact about Manson. Still a great song......seen Neil eight times and he never played this one.
He's got sooo many gems in his catalogue.. wouldn't you luv to see a 6+ hr show (or two 3hr) of a few from each album.. I'm dreamin.. (1st show, R.N.S. ca.79' 5th row from stage, forum calif.)
This song is about his brief friendship with Manson and how he felt about it after hearing about the murders. Neil actually liked Mansons music which is very folksy. He tried to help him get into the music industry. However when Terry Melcher Doris Days son turned him down. Things spiraled out of control.

i remember after Harvest how bummed i was by On the Beach, but it captures disaffection of early 70s. This song sounds topical today as if it could be right wing revolutionary revolutions as opposed to failed left wing revolution of 60s
There's only one Rick Danko. I've seen Lukas play with his dad but I would like to see him with his own band, every recording of one of their shows I've heard has been excellent.

ON THE BEACH is a criminally underrated album. What an amazing version!!
One of my favorite Neil albums ........... and this song is just a gut punch ....... love it. And P of the R crushed it this night.
Absolutely! "Ambulance Blues" is NY's mastersong!
hear hear
Neil's music is awesome!!! On the Beach is, in my opinion, his best ever album. Fan forever !!! I'm 61 now.....................................
Not to people who know anything of his music beyond "Heart of Gold" or "Four Strong Winds". Very legitimate argument to be made for "On The Beach" being his crowning achievement as an album, way back when his soul was deeply implicated in the creative process.

I saw Neil and Crazy Horse on the Greendale Tour here in Australia. Then they did an hour of Live Rust. That was incredible.
2016 and Neil sounds as fresh and biting as on the '74 album. Damn!
Undoubtedly the best Neil Young is this kind of Neil Young.
🎩
I've seen him play Danger Bird, if I get to see him play Revolution Blues I can die happy.
A bucket list song, so envious👍
"And ten million dune-buggies comin' down the mountain"...God I love this song
You just never know how deep the old boy will dig. Amazing performer, always so tight.
One of my favourite albums... the poignant, haunting sounds of See The Sky About To Rain. Enjoy every second of life.
This is the definitive version of Revolution Blues. Thanks for posting.
It is a damn good version for sure!
Neil is just awesome live. This is a brilliant version.

Wish I'd been there to WOO alongside you!
This is an old post but, there is never a need to make apologies for WHOOOOing for Neil! Hope all is well with you.
Saw him in sweden yesterday, he told us to "keep a close eye on your government" and then started playing this. Blew my mind.
He was right. He's always been soooo ahead of his time it's scary. It's only ONE of the many reasons I LOVE this magically talented musician! 2017 now, everything he created decades ago is new again and again

A beautiful twisted slow burning intensity all these years later one of those songs I long wished he'd revive and here it is 👍
Good God. I love Neil Young!

last time played 29 years ago..
Thank you so much for recording this song! So grateful! REVOLUTION BLUES!
One of rocks most demented tunes. Crosby hated it, scared him.
Neil doesn't fear anyone! Except himself!
My favorite album

So many shows from 1976 to now and now he plays it. THANKS
I will never forget this concert. Thank you Neil!
Proud to say, "I was there."
One of the greatest songs of all time.
Straight to the heart!! the essence of rock and roll ....
Revolution Blues reminds me so much of Sister Morphine
Hey GREAT i just discover that... a song from my favorite Neil's album
This might be my favourite video on UA-cam.
Might be?

My favourite Neil Young song. I'm seeing him in Glasgow a week today. Hope he plays it again!

Got tics to see him at Desert Trip in Oct. Counting the days!

I just heard this song after 64 years it's unbelievable Neil Young is Neil Young!

one of the best rock music songs
Neil is Gold.fantastic
What a great song...thanks for posting this
This should have been on Noise & Flowers.
Smokin', rockin' version ! Seen Neil and POTR at Hyde Park London July 2019 Superb show. They preceded Bob Dylan and Neil commented when referring to some of his lyrics that they did not usually play in daylight !
CRAKING GOOD
Love this man the best never the same
Not only do you need to be lucky to see this one live, no, you also need to be lucky for the drummer to know the song.
Loved this album, had it on 8Track about 76' maybe
OMG ...Life is a Gift...
My favourite Neil Young, love it.

It was an anti Manson song about the family and David Crosby told him he’s was crazy to write about it but Neil felt he needed to make a statement

Undercover agent for the Blues
I love this version
oh no, they have 2 more rifles this time.
Masterpiece for sure
Demented song! Love it!
È immortale il grande Neil
how to rock, right there
The early to the mid seventies song.
This is fckn awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bomb
I was in a crappy band in the mid-80's that did this song. It wss epic. Because of Neil, not us.
I live in a trailer at the edge of town

It just is the dirtiest and scariest piece you will ever hear! You listen to me! - see! Get it!
David Crosby plays guitar on the original version, he didn't like the song at first. , Crosby told Young, "Don't sing about that. It's not funny."
Crosby can be the asshole of the planet but he's got a point here....
No live versions (covers or Neil) do the drums right.
Does anyone know whey he changed the number of the rifles?
The saddest thing about being at a Neil Young gig is that his set needs to be about 10 hours long.
I wonder why 27 rifles now, instead of 25 ?
Je voulais dire : un peu plus de patience que pour les Archives!!!

Spellbinding Neil.
We need more NEIL Young these days and more revolution bluse . Charlie manson rest in peace man . ✌
Albert Noriega
Ah No! May he Rot in Hell! No Peace for that Evil Turd!
Fallait juste un peu de patience!
Do you think he waited for Charlie to die before he played this live?
I’d like to dedicate this to Charles Manson! He practically wrote it! Or at least he was the main inspiration!
the godfather of rejection
Neil thanks for all the trials and tribulations! Say hi to Jackson Browne for me! No nukes!!!
OhYeah ....
Lucky son of a bitch! I saw him once, and spent most of the set hoping he'd play this. Nice!
i remember after Harvest how bummed i was by On the Beach, but it captures disaffection of early 70s. This song sounds topical today as if it could be right wing revolutionary revolutions as opposed to failed left wing revolution of 60s
i no digg it
My only complaint is the bass isn't as badass as the record.!! But fucking WOW!!!❤
There's only one Rick Danko. I've seen Lukas play with his dad but I would like to see him with his own band, every recording of one of their shows I've heard has been excellent.
It’s Danko and Levon Helm on the record. You’re never getting near the way those two play so you just hit it hard and real. Excellent version
