    Inna, thank you very much for this great video. For anyone who reads my post here. The flash cards have been a great help in learning the verb conjugation. Also, the textbook has been an exceptional resource regarding cases. For those struggling with these two concepts, all I can tell you is practice practice practice followed buy listening to native speakers either here on You-Tube or any other medium.

      Oh, one more thing… there is a pattern when it comes to conjugation.

    My favorite part in these videos is when you ask a question we were thinking. :) "Inna, but you said you is ти!" 😄 And then you go and answer it. It makes your videos so fun! And you teach so carefully and thoroughly!

    the reason why "могти" in the conjugation becomes "можеш", "можемо" and/or "можете" is that there was a sound change called "palatalization" for the velar consonants "к", "г" and "х". "к", "г" and "х" change before front vowels /e/, /i/ or semivowel /j/ into "ч" (for "к"), "ж" (for "г") and "ш" (for "х"):
    *"могти" -> "могйу" -> "могю" -> "можу" (first-person singular)
    *"могти" -> "могеш" -> "могйеш" -> "могєш" -> "можеш" (second-person singular)

    Very useful verbs are can, need, want, like. Then you can make something out of those verbs and use it in every sentence.

    Also in English one uses the infinitive after modal verbs. I think in most languages it's this way.

    Hi. In Slovak we use the verb can "môcť" to express permission to do something rather than the ability. Is this the same in Ukrainian? Ja môžem plávať = I'm allowed to swim, rather than I am able to swim. Hope this makes sense and look forward to more lessons - they're great!

    Hi Ina! Thank you for teaching us the form of the veb can in Ukrainian. As I was paying attention , I realize that the conjugation of this verb in Ukrainian resembles the conjugation in Spanish of the same verb, “poder.” It goes like this: yo puedo, tu puedes, el puede, nosotros podemos, ustedes pueden, ellos pueden. Wow!

    Првіт Інна, I am finding the flash cards very useful. I gave a question about the verb "help". The flash cards spell it as доромагати, but in the video you spell is as "допомогти"? What is the difference?

    • @SpeakUkrainian
      @SpeakUkrainian  3 роки тому +6

      Допомогти - Perfective. Допомагати - Imperfective.
