The KISS interview is one of the best ever. For a band that claimed to be all about fun and living life, this was the ONLY interview that backed it up. It's legendary for being awesome.
The video should have shown the ending of the interview where Steve Jones stands up and starts dancing to the tune of the show that transitions to commercials. That is the funniest thing ever hahaha
4:27 - Damon is thinking "this is exactly why I started Gorillaz" 7:05 - Bill Grundy: the only man in history to say "not the nice, clean Rolling Stones" 14:19 - INTERCOURSE!
2003? I think Coxon left Blur again in the middle of the 'Think Tank' recordings because he and Damon kept falling out due to Graham's distain for Gorillaz.
The Iggy Pop and Kiss ones are freaking hilarious though. Iggy is high out of his goddamn mind and Ace is drunk as hell and is fully aware of how silly the whole thing is and how stupid it is for Gene to take everything so seriously, and Tom Snyder seemed like he really enjoyed Ace's contributions (Peter gets it too, Paul looks like he wants to laugh as well but doesn't want to piss off Gene, and Gene looks and sounds like someone pissed in his cereal right in front of him).
If you know Gene's backstory, being interviewed by Tom Snyder was the apex for him, it epitomized everything he worked towards. Unfortunately he has always taken himself way too seriously, he's got no perspective on humor and just has a mean streak in him. He's the best case study for the benefits of using drugs I've ever seen.
The Tom Synder interview with KISS was hilarious and legendary...it wasn't awful. Gene always dominates interviews with his boring pretentious talk, nice to see Ace take over.
Ironically, Ace was not the funniest one, Gene was. The look of utter frustration and annoyance on the face of a man dressed up as a demon next to three others in similar garb was priceless. Ace nailed it, "how can we be serious dressed like this."
With the KISS interview, the real reason that Gene was upset was that Tom Snyder was paying more attention to Ace because Ace was the one being the most entertaining. Yes, he was out of control, but he was funny, not taking it too seriously and it was clear that Tom Snyder was having a blast talking to him. Everyone but Gene had been drinking before the show, even Paul is clearly out of it. Gene was there trying to be serious and the others, especially Ace and Peter, just wanted to have fun.
According to their former manager, Bill Aucoin, Ace HATED doing pre-interviews. When Tom Snyder's people got done with it, they told Tom: "Paul and Gene are the leaders and will do most of the talking. Peter will talk if you ask him a question. Ace WON'T talk." Much to his surprise, he asked Ace a question - and Ace wouldn't shut up, much to the annoyance of Gene.
Ace Frehley later attributed his drunken behavior on the Tom Snyder show to the fact that he was terrified about doing an interview on national television. So he drank a half a bottle of vodka on the limo ride down to Manhattan from his house in Connecticut. He also said that Tom Snyder had such a good time with him making jokes on the show that he was knocking on his dressing room door after the show was over because he wanted to meet him.
Ace seemed to have a blast when Tom was in on the laughs. Much to the chagrin of Gene lol. Ace also had fun hanging out with the guys from Rush when they toured together in the mid 70s. Alex Lifeson used to crack him up.
That KISS interview was anything but awful. It was thoroughly entertaining and we should all hope to have as much fun as Ace Frehley was having that night!
I remember Ace saying that he was dressed up like a superhero, how serious was he supposed to be. That was part of the problem, the new costumes were a bit much for him and Peter to swallow.
The KISS interview was epic. Nobody in the world except Gene and whoever this guy is would say otherwise. Snyder was great as well. 100% in on the joke and rolling right along with it.
The KISS interview was hysterical. As much as Paul and Gene were pissed at Ace, he got them cracking up from some of his comments. FYI Paul gives the final say in the band. Gene is in charge of marketing.
Yeah. He kind of reminds me of Ted Nugent. Trashes people for drugs and partying but blatantly banging 13 and 14 year old girls. Now THATS just fine in their opinion. Pricks
This is something I have always disliked a great deal about rock stars- for lack of a better term- the way they try and pretend they don't want to be noticed or that they're too cool to care- when the reality is, they've dedicated their life to getting their face in front of a camera- you don't become a rock star by accident. They love every second of it and live for someone to notice them or ask them questions- and if they don't- they should find another job. Don't become a dentist if you hate teeth- it's not rocket science. Even Maynard is bad at this- and usually he's not a typical rock star type but- I've seen him be extremely rude for no good reason to interviewers. The one question that seems to really tick him off is "Why is the band named Tool."- he refuses to answer it. I mean I get it; he thinks the answer is either apparent to you or- it would be a waste if time trying to explain it to you. Which I guess is true to some degree but- chances are that interviewer had never even heard their music so- how would they know that? This was after Under Tow, so they weren't exactly huge back then.
Ill never understand why some people are so mean to Nardwaur, the man is so enthusiastic about his work and he really takes the time to do his research about the artists instead of just asking the typical questions the artists get asked by everybody else.
Uninvited touching of a man's hat or face/glasses in any way is the very acme of disrespect. That idiot drummer deserved to be slapped across his face at the least.
This Kiss interview might be the best I've ever seen. At least, in terms of being funny. Ace is having a blast, and so was the interviewer, I mean, he was laughing his ass off on all Ace's stupid jokes, and so was Peter. Only Paul, and specially Gene, were pissed off, but for me, this interview is pure gold!
I remember the KISS interview when it happened back in 1979. I was familiar with Tom Snyder's show and I was a KISS fan by association because my sister was an absolute KISS freak from 1977-1978. Back in those days, I saw far more of the members of KISS in magazines than in video (there was not yet MTV or the Internet), so seeing these guys on The Tomorrow Show interview was a bit of a treat. I got a kick out of Ace's jokes and laughter and it was obvious Tom Snyder was not only not upset but actually seemed to be enjoying the show. On top of that, some of Ace's jokes were pretty good.
Drunk & Cackling Ace Frehley is Great ! LMAO! That interview is the best Kiss Interview ever_ The host introduces Gene as the Bass (pronounced as in Fish) player so when the guy turns to Ace he says, "and your the ...." Then ACE quickly interjects "I'm the TROUT Playah ! AH-hahahahaha-haha" Genes Face ? Priceless !!!
There's a number of infamous Nardwuar interviews, especially in his early days before he was better known and confused musicians would think he was making fun of them. The Lydia Lunch and Exene Cervenka interview comes to mind. Also, Scott Stapp actually seems like a fun drunk. Which is surprising.
Musicians can be some of the biggest knobs. For every band that makes it, there are 100,000 bands that never do. To have anyone at all wanting to talk to you should be a great privilege. For any musician to sit there, no matter what type of interview, and act completely disinterested is not only rude, but a slap in the face to all their fans, and the industry/art form as a whole. If dealing with interviews is such a pain in the butt, then go join the other 7 billion people on Earth, working horrible jobs, for horrible people, for horrible money, and zero appreciation.
I remember watching the Scott Stapp thing on tv, talking about his sack and making weird kung fu noises. It was painful to see it in my own living room. I can’t imagine how painful it was to be in the same room as him.
That one interview that Paramore did for a French radio station and the host asked Hayley what was her favorite curse word then right after asked her if she ever had an orgasm.
I think one interview that I'll always think of when it comes to awful/awkward it's the one of that young lad attempting to interview Henry rollins after a Black Flag gig. It was getting to the point where I was getting worried for the kid. XD
8:28 "Sex Pistols aren't Saints", Yeah, The Saints are the name of a couple of different bands entirely, At least the Australian band were punk also, but definitely not the same as the freaking Sex Pistols 17:18 "Iggy's performance" To be honest, a lot of Countdown's "Live" performances were like that, They did a few live performances, but most of the time it was run like the UK's Top of the Pops, where the bands were overdubbed Though Iggy was such in a state of so not Giving a fuck, so it was immediately obvious that there was overdubbing in the broadcast
I got stuck behind Scott Stapp in traffic. This little car where the driver obviously was lost. Had a giant screenprint going across his back windshield that said Scott Stapp from Creed. I changed lanes to pass and looked over, NEEDING to know who was driving this car promoting Scott Stapp of all people, and sure enough it was him at the wheel.
That's too ridiculous to be made up. I'm actually not even surprised, when I think about it. You were probably laughing your ass off the rest of the week. I certainly would have. 🤣
OMFG. The Kiss interview was literally the greatest thing ever. Ace Frehley is still THE GOAT for this. 🤘🏻 As a matter of fact, I have to go back and watch this interview every few months because it gives me that much life. R.I.P. the late, great Tom Snyder. He was awesome in his own way.
Fun Fact: That clip of I'm Bored on Countdown has become the official music video for it over here in Australia ever since and according to Ian "Molly" Meldrum (the interviewer) Iggy was actually pretty normal in the green room, making a cup of tea for his (Iggy's) wife and everything.
I can't figure out how anyone thought Billy Corgan (even in those days) would have been a good candidate to interview anyone - much less interviewing an artist who clearly thinks he's just some dumb college intern roped into the job. OH DEAR GOD! The Scott Stapp one. I don't know Howard Stern's opinion of him but... wow! That's horrifying.
I was surprised the infamous "Most Awkward Killswitch Interview Ever" with a clueless interviewer wasn't on here but then I realized that wasn't "Awful" just very awkward and funny. The guys were laughing almost the entire time.
The Scott Stapp one just makes me feel sorry for the guy Honorable mention to that time Sebastian Bach stormed out of an interview because George Strombolopolous asked him about Poison
@@RockedNet oh absolutely you gotta help yourself. It's just sad that this guy was on top of the world a couple years prior and he's reduced to a drunk, embarassing mess on national television.
I don't think I would call this interview "awful" by any means, but there's an interview Prince did as part of his appearance on _American Bandstand_ back in 1980, and the entire time he's giving these one- and two-word answers to Dick Clark's questions. Some of them are honestly pretty funny: at one point the host, Dick Clark, asks him "did somebody tell me you played every instrument on this album, is that correct?" and he just answers "Maybe." Prince would say about that interview, later that year in the Star Tribune, “That tripped me out when Dick Clark asked how I come from Minneapolis, of all places...That really gave me an attitude. TV personalities are hard to talk to. They come out of certain bags. Music is music. A place is a place.” Dick Clark would later remark, “I’ve always said that was one of the most difficult interviews I’ve ever conducted, and I’ve done 10,000 musician interviews.” It's pretty easily available online, if you want to see for yourself.
The KISS interview was/is/and always will be the best ever. Ace was just having a great time and funny as hell. Tom Snyder freakin' loved interviewing Ace. My favorite part was when Tom asked Gene if he plays the bass (he pronounced it like the fish) and then he asks Ace what he plays in the band and he responds with "I PLAY THE TROUT!!!" and laughs his ass off. It was so damn awesome.
While they're far more an underground metal icons, Behemoth had a particularly bad interview with their bassist Orion. To his credit, he did the whole thing with a smile on his face but this woman asking him the stupidest of questions like if he still slept with his teddy bear. No joke. I get the idea of asking childish questions to the bassist of an actual satanic band but this was so painful to watch.
And, speaking of Frank Zappa. Ever notice with every passing year Zappa's wisdom becomes more relevant . . . "Most rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, for people who can't read." This video, case in point.
no one is better at interviews than Nardwar!! he will always dig so deep into the artist's history and surprise them with facts they thought no one knew about them.
I went to Alice copper and Ace Frehley. Alice and his band did amazing. Ace was drunk and sung horribly, didn’t move he just sat in a chair the whole time. I still love ace tho
WHAT?! Gene Simmons is a notoriously sober tea sipper LOL OTHER ROCKERS have told stories about him showing up at parties and dissing them and other guests for drinking and partying and shit (thanks for coming, Gene).. "With 49 years as a rockstar, Simmons has had plenty of time, money and opportunity to embrace the vices so many others in the industry have succumbed to. However, Simmons, who is a founding member of the band, has never had more than a sip of alcohol in his life and avoids drugs entirely." - HE IS LITERALLY KNOWN FOR ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE TO TONE IT DOWN LOL So you're wrong with that take, Bro. If Gene tells you to tone it down, you had BETTER set down that 1 beer.... LOL
Still shocked the Terry Gross interview with Gene Simmons wasn't on here. Terry is one of the most professional interviewers in the business and Simmons managed to piss *her* off and look like the far worse one for it.
Wait his name ISN'T Rivers Weezer? Then why are they named Weezer? You know.. like Kurt Nirvana? Billie Joe Green Day? James Metallica (also known as Jimmy Mets)? Liam Oa...k I'm done... Prince Prince?... ok NOW I'm done.
I think Nardwuar should probably let some of the people he's interviewing in on the bit. By this point, people know who he is, but back then if you weren't familiar with him then he just come across as a bit of an annoying jerk. I remember an interview he did with Beck over the phone which ended with Beck getting angry and hanging up on him. Beck doesn't strike me as the kind of guy it's easy to piss off, but Nardwuar kept going at him and asking the same question over and over. I don't think it was right for Blur to bully him, but having seen his interactions with some other artists, it feels like he wants to annoy them and when you do that, you're going to get that kind of reaction eventually. I did see a good interview he did with Peter Tork though, mostly because Tork played along and was basically one step ahead of him at all times.
14:46 - All I know is that Scott Stapp never had the makings of a varsity interviewee. Seriously though, Steve Schirripa looks like he'd rather be dealing with Janice Soprano in real life.
I watched the KISS interview after seeing this and have to say that it wasn't awful...it was great! I'd recommend watching it. Ace is maybe drunk but very charming and amiable and a foil to Gene Simmons' cool, intelligent demeanour. I don't think the others were annoyed with him - they were probably used to it.
If anyone knows anything about Rivers, Rivers is a notorious anti social hermit. In the past, he’s disconnected his phone for years at a time to pursue solitude. That interview was no doubt hell for him.
Drunk Ace anno 1979 is the holy grail for any journalist. As an Ace fan, I've probably seen that interview thirty times. And Gene is a piss ant and always will be.
Dave Rowntree must still be cringing at what a shameful thug he was. Must have been the school bully, or otherwise the bullied one getting misplaced revenge on a poor reporter. The worst of all of these in my view.
The Stone Roses are one of my favorites. They made one of the best albums in rock history but I would never have wanted to meet them. Most of their public things went like this. They did a press conference for a huge concert they were promoting at Spike Island and they actually charged the media to come to it and listen to them their responses were even more belligerent than this interview.
I saw the KISS interview live. And I'm a lifelong fan. It was hilarious. You didn't really notice the ire of Gene & Paul at the time. Ace was a pretty funny drunk with good timing. Having watched it many times over the years, and knowing the internal strife that was going on, I can see the frustration of Gene & Paul. Tom Snyder did a pretty good job of going with the flow.
Surprised there wasn't any Phil Anselmo interviews from the early 2000's Down/Superjoint Ritual days on here where he is out his mind on heroin and just slurring his words and mumbling.
I love the DGAF attitude of the Sex Pistols and Iggy Pop. That's Rock and Roll, baby! (or punk). Gene Simmons was pissed because Kiss was first a business, then a band.
I think the Kiss interview was very entertaining and fun. Gene was just too focused on trying act serious. To me the interviewer didn't seem to mind, he acted like he was having a good time as well, the only ones bothered were Gene and Paul.
Ace I think was the one that made Kiss . Soon as he left the band they were in a bit of a spiral then they got him and Peter back few times knowing it would prop them up again
Yeah, they knew that they needed those 2. Gene and Paul's mentality was that because they were the founders of the group, they were all that mattered.@@zozmirjanuc4658
I'm fairly certain that Stone Roses clip (along with a spoonful or two of Oasis) was the basis for a Mr. Show sketch, where the band Smoosh is throwing a contest to send a fan to the moon. The "interview" with the guys played by Bob and David give very similar responses.
Also another classic Aussie interview (not so cringe, more humorous) was Norman Gunston and Guns N Rose 1993. Slash and Duff are hungover/jet lagged and are like WTF?!?! But they play along with him well. Gunston was the original Ali G 😂
I had only seen the tail end of the Bee Gees interview, and without context it looked like they were being too sensitive, so it's good to get the story of what was going on. Also seeing how they all went in it with the best intention, a good sense of humor, and laughing at themselves. It seems that they realized it wasn't good natured jesting, but just meanness, and I understand why they left.
Yes, some of Anderson's jibes crossed the line into unpleasant snark. I do laugh at how the final straw moment was a relatively mild joke "I've forgotten that one". Lol
@@raithrover1976 Ah, now it's making even more sense, because the only part I had seen is where they walked off, and it felt like they were being sensitive. But to see the full interview, and just a non-stop hit at them and their careers, even if it was supposed to be in good fun, it's 100% understandable why Barry wouldn't take it. Maurice even left with a lot of class, "guess I'd better join them" and almost like a "no hard feelings here" kind of exit. Just gives me respect for them even more.
The KISS interview actually started good, but by the end the interviewer was just interviewing Ace, and he was so wasted he had no idea what was happening, everything was hysterical to him. It’s obvious Gene and Paul had been dealing with this behaviour for years and were over it. Every one of these interviews showed serious lack of disrespect from some artists, as well as interviewers. Probably why the old MTV type shows don’t exist anymore. Countdown was my all time favourite show (by the way, we can blame Molly Meldrum for Madonna)

The girl with the suspenders getting creeped on in the Sex Pistols interview is a young Siouxie Sioux.

Probably Ace and Peter were drunk and Paul and Gene were sober since both are pretty clean living

2003? I think Coxon left Blur again in the middle of the 'Think Tank' recordings because he and Damon kept falling out due to Graham's distain for Gorillaz.
It wasn't because of Gorillaz, Graham was in a depression and drinking heavily.
@@lucasoheyze4597 Damon had said in the past that Graham would often poke fun at him for his "cartoon band" and he just got sick of it.
The Stones were ANYTHING but clean, that's what I found hilarious 😂
The Iggy Pop and Kiss ones are freaking hilarious though. Iggy is high out of his goddamn mind and Ace is drunk as hell and is fully aware of how silly the whole thing is and how stupid it is for Gene to take everything so seriously, and Tom Snyder seemed like he really enjoyed Ace's contributions (Peter gets it too, Paul looks like he wants to laugh as well but doesn't want to piss off Gene, and Gene looks and sounds like someone pissed in his cereal right in front of him).
Gene pisses in his own cereal.. calls it milk, then tries to trademark milk.
Gene laughed some
@@MENFUSSMIKEyeah but he really didn't want to lol he laughed in spite of himself 🤣
@@bobthebear1246 true. But you can't help but laugh when Ace laughs
Whenever I'm in a bad mood I will go back and watch that interview with Tom Snyder because it makes me laugh!
Ironically, Ace was not the funniest one, Gene was. The look of utter frustration and annoyance on the face of a man dressed up as a demon next to three others in similar garb was priceless. Ace nailed it, "how can we be serious dressed like this."
@@tedwojtasik8781 Ace's laugh is the best 🤣🤣
I like the one where the interviewer complained to Chris Cornell about the "noise" and Chris just goes, "Yeah, isn't it great?"
Plus, Ace and Peter always got wasted and did drugs, while Gene Simmons never did any of that stuff.
and he probably couldn't obtain a patent on that laughter.i think he actually invented laughing
And probably so ace could work on that little pipe he was talking about 😂 he's a 'plumber' 🤣😂
That KISS interview was anything but awful. It was thoroughly entertaining and we should all hope to have as much fun as Ace Frehley was having that night!
Yeah for once you got to hear from the two members that never got to talk. And they were fun
Tom Snyder was clearly having as much fun as Ace. That’s part of what made it so great.
I'm with Ace🎶🎸
Yea Ace is a gem
I remember Ace saying that he was dressed up like a superhero, how serious was he supposed to be. That was part of the problem, the new costumes were a bit much for him and Peter to swallow.
Scott Stapp forcing a kiss on that woman was just beyond cringe.
I'm truly surprised she didn't reach back and clock him.

Tom Snyder’s show was great. He knew how to roll with the punches.
Gene is always a downer, so no wonder he was out of his element when it comes to having fun
The KISS interview was hysterical. As much as Paul and Gene were pissed at Ace, he got them cracking up from some of his comments. FYI Paul gives the final say in the band. Gene is in charge of marketing.
Yeah, Eventually Paul had to let go and laugh.
That KISS interview is awesome, I love how Gene and Paul are so miserable
I always love when Gene is miserable.
Gene takes life very seriously for a guy wearing make-up and platform shoes.
Yeah. He kind of reminds me of Ted Nugent. Trashes people for drugs and partying but blatantly banging 13 and 14 year old girls. Now THATS just fine in their opinion. Pricks
As uncomfortable as that Ace Frehley may have been, I can't help but find it funny. Maybe it's just because his laugh reminds me of The Joker.
Only gene and Paul make it uncomfortable, everyone else is having a blast

The blonde woman in the Sex Pistols interview was Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees. I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned.

I'd genuinely fight anyone who tries to bully Nardwuar. He does so many interviews and doesn't deserve to be pushed around like that.

I was thinking that Scott probably got sober after he was shown that, so maybe it had a ultimate purpose at least?

The Tom Snyder interview was one of the best things that ever happened. Ace kills me.
I think one interview that I'll always think of when it comes to awful/awkward it's the one of that young lad attempting to interview Henry rollins after a Black Flag gig. It was getting to the point where I was getting worried for the kid. XD

8:28 "Sex Pistols aren't Saints", Yeah, The Saints are the name of a couple of different bands entirely, At least the Australian band were punk also, but definitely not the same as the freaking Sex Pistols
17:18 "Iggy's performance" To be honest, a lot of Countdown's "Live" performances were like that, They did a few live performances, but most of the time it was run like the UK's Top of the Pops, where the bands were overdubbed Though Iggy was such in a state of so not Giving a fuck, so it was immediately obvious that there was overdubbing in the broadcast
Stapp kissing that woman was absolutely horrifying.

I don't think I would call this interview "awful" by any means, but there's an interview Prince did as part of his appearance on _American Bandstand_ back in 1980, and the entire time he's giving these one- and two-word answers to Dick Clark's questions. Some of them are honestly pretty funny: at one point the host, Dick Clark, asks him "did somebody tell me you played every instrument on this album, is that correct?" and he just answers "Maybe."
Prince would say about that interview, later that year in the Star Tribune, “That tripped me out when Dick Clark asked how I come from Minneapolis, of all places...That really gave me an attitude.
Seeing Billy Corgan with hair is just downright scary.
Frank DID have a way with words.

Rock stars get annoyed easily
He refused to sign off on it so it was never aired.
Look up Gene Simmons on the Mike Douglas show. Totie Fields really puts him in his place!

Aces interview in 79 (KISS) was comedy gold
Ace on Tom Snyder was awful? For who? Paul and gene? That may be the greatest interview of all time
I saw the KISS interview live.
Can't believe you didn't mention that the "lady" in that Sex Pistols interview that Grundy hit on was none other than a young Siouxsie Sioux.

I love the DGAF attitude of the Sex Pistols and Iggy Pop. That's Rock and Roll, baby! (or punk). Gene Simmons was pissed because Kiss was first a business, then a band.
Blur and Stone Roses are probably looking back and regretting the fact anybody actually wanted to interview them.

I'm fairly certain that Stone Roses clip (along with a spoonful or two of Oasis) was the basis for a Mr. Show sketch, where the band Smoosh is throwing a contest to send a fan to the moon. The "interview" with the guys played by Bob and David give very similar responses.
