The funny thing is I was cleaning my front porch with all my lawn equipment and found that little piece and saved it because I knew it belonged to something. And, my weed eater was not working and didn't understand why. I had done everything right but it just wasn't working. I came here and so Thankful I did. Now I can't find the piece I had put up. Lol I really do appreciate this video. It was really frustrating knowing I was doing everything right. Blessings to you.

Thank you all for the tips. My line feeder assembly flew off and when I put it all together the feeder wasn't locking. I went through a whole spool before I discovered the problem. I knew a part must be missing and within minutes I found this video detailing my exact problem and how to solve it. I retraced my steps and found the small part but after careful examination -- and watching your video - I realized a piece of it had broken off. Anyway, I ordered the part from Amazon and I hope it will be back in service for another round next weekend. Thanks for quickly solving my frustration!

wow thank you so much for the clues i needed. black and decker definitely needS to explain this BETTER: the stupid 'easy feed' button doesnt feed anything it just shuts off the motor. so it is natural for us to assume when the button doesnt make the string come out it is broken. also the two wide slots in the spool look like that is where the cap edges go into but they dont. The pin on the little lever mechanism BELOW THE SPOOL has to go into the rigtht slot in the bottom of the spool then you just push the string and pull out to advance the line. the key is knowing the 'easy feed' button ISNT. its just a manual operation but the spool has to be in the right slot so it goes forward and stops.

The problem is the replacement spool, not the trimmer. Try using a drill with a 5/8 bit to carefully make the center hole in the replacement spool a little bigger. That should allow your spool to turn and automatically advance when more string is needed.

I would love to speak to the rocket scientist who designed this automatic feeder.
Seems to me that the spool is locked into place because the lever sets in a notch in the bottom of the spool.
I just can’t see what is supposed to happen in order for the lock to disengage and let a small amount of string to be fed.
Someone please do a video on this explaining the process in detail so we can better diagnose the issues.
Also: why would the Craftsman model work without a lever spring when the B&D models have a spring under the lever. Very interesting!

stop asking me to change my name! The pin or tab in the head needs to be in the outside channel of the spool. Make sure that tab/pin moves easily, too. Sometimes by the time you put the spool and the cover back on it moves the tab to the wrong groove of the spool. Mine cooperates most of the time but I still have to monkey with it sometimes. Mine has stopped auto-feeding. It used to be my brother's, but he passed it to me to fix after he had lost the cap and the spool. After sourcing the spares I've managed to use it successfully for a whole spool of cord, without the spring in place! New spool, and it's not working. Maybe the spring is important after all...?! Well, I haven't found the spring, but I did follow advice found in another video, and it's still working without the spring...
I applied dry lubricant (silicon spray) to the spool spindle and that has cured the problem. The line is auto-feeding once more. The problem was that the spool did not rotate freely enough for the little cam weight to operate properly. Job done!

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

The feed was working perfectly on the preset spool, but, once it ran out, it was a tough yard, I manually put a new string on their and the auto feed line was not work ing.I had to open it up and pull it. The Thingamajig was on there, not broke at all.I followed the direction I wound the new string tightly and did not criss-cross.I even cleaned the inside, but it still would not auto-feed I had an olde model that burned out a few months ago. I t was a lot easier to pull the string out through button-pushing that this more expensive model.

Make sure you get the right replacement lever that matches your model of trimmer, though. The Amazon link provided is for a specific lever which fits on certain models, but not all.

Okay. So there is a difference between the old model that is the lst522 And the newer model. Th3e older model does not have a spring it seems from factory. The new one does and needs it to operate.

I have the bottom clip and spring. That's not the problem. It got tangled in weeds and now makes a LOUD noise when I turn it on, with no spinning. Well, I'm sure the motor in there is spinning or trying to spin. I mean, something has to be making that LOUD noise. Maybe the motor axle got de-threaded from the bottom piece? who knows, but it appears to be junk now. lol

servicenet.blackanddecker.com/Products/Detail/LST540 I snagged a piece of twine between my spool housing (#19 on the parts diagram) and the ball bearing (#22 on the parts diagram). I believe I was able to get the entire piece of twine out with some needle nose pliers but I want to make 100% sure so i don't have any drag on my spool. I can't figure out how to get the spool housing off of the motor assembly without taking apart everything. Is there an easy way to get the spool housing off of the shaft?

I’m so frustrated over the stupidest thing. I’m not the original owner but I looked up the manual online. The black collar on the shaft is supposed to turn to loosen or lock so the shaft can be adjust and that thing will not turn no matter what. I am at a stand still. I took a wrench to it and just scuffed it up. I need to adjust the shaft. Grrr
