    I spray a little Bloxygen into partially used cans to avoid the leftover finish from reacting with the oxygen in the can. It's saved a lot of product.

    Is this GF’s water-based finish or oil? If water, would oil poly gel work over shellac?
    I ask because I’ve tried using GF’s Salad Bowl Finish over shellac (applied thin coats of it and let it dry for at least 24 - 48 hours) but it remains tacky. I’ve used the wood bowl finish before but not on top of anything other than danish oil and it’s worked out incredibly well but found you can’t apply it over dewaxed shellac.

    thanks for the quick..to-the-point video. Being a weekend woodworker, this really helps when it comes time to finish a project off as a quick reference since it is weeks or even months between finishing projects

      Thanks for the feedback. I always struggle with level of video content (too much, too little, or about right).

      yeah for something like that it was nice and quick. I also like the more detail oriented videos on your builds, segmented out. All good stuff and very helpful!

    Thanks for a great video. Building a desk top using walnut burl which has many surface imperfections. Would Gel Topcoat fill some of the smaller dents?

      Hi Jack. The gel topcoat will not fill dents or imperfections. If you are just dealing with small dents, I would attempt a damp paper towel and household iron to try and raise the dent to the surface. I normally use one of 3 methods to fill defects in order of preference: 1) Rangate knot filler (fast but relatively high initial cost), 2) Starbond medium dark CA and accelerator (inexpensive but involves more sanding work so not quite as fast), or 3) epoxy with dye (medium expense, repugnant odor, cures slowly, temperature sensitive, have to apply heat to get rid of air bubbles, and requires a lot of sanding).

    This was a great tutorial. Do you go over it with fine sandpaper between coats of the gel top coat?

    • @extremewoodworker

      Thanks Deb. I do not sand between coats of this finish. If there are dust nubs in the finish or it doesn't feel smooth, I would but so far, I haven't seen this problem. Steve

    How much gel stain do I need to do a few coats on one side of a 74x25in table? I don't want to have extra laying around as I have no room for it. GF sells the stains and finishes in half pint, pint, and quart. Thanks

      A little goes a long way. I buy it in quarts and have put 3 coats on a dresser and still had about 1/2 can left. Hope this helps. Steve

    This is also my favorite finish for darker woods.

      @@extremewoodworker Oh yeah my go to finish for cherry for sure unless it's a kitchen or bath, then I will still go for catalyzed varnish.

      Vishal, the color was a mixture of 7 parts Orange to 4 parts Medium Brown General Finishes Dye Stain. Two coats were applied. This is Darrell Pearts forumula for his Greene & Greene furniture. Steve

      Vishal, Sorry I don't know the answer to your question. I use the waterbased dye stains and am pretty sure I purchased it from Rockler..

    Steve have you compared this finish to spraying on water based poly from GF?

    • @extremewoodworker
      @extremewoodworker  8 років тому +1

      Hi Steve. I haven't used the GF but have used EnduroVar water based poly. My preferences for furniture are shellac and the GF gel topcoat unless it is a light colored wood. I use the water based poly on light colored woods and cabinets since it doesn't have the amber hue. For this nightstand, the base, shelf and drawer is all being finished with garnet shellac that is sprayed. The gel topcoat on the top is a very close match with the shellac finish on the base.

      Steve I bought a pint of this gel finish and put it on a sample board, which looks really good. Today I'm re-finishing my coffee table top with it. I had previously sprayed it with GF water based poly and I wasn't happy with the results. Do you leave your finishes as is or do you rub out and wax?

    • @extremewoodworker
      @extremewoodworker  7 років тому +1

      Steve Lyde Steve, I just leave it as is. Glad you like the finish.

    Do you have to sand between coats? If so what grit?

    • @extremewoodworker
      @extremewoodworker  7 років тому

      Hi Jason, The application instructions don't say. I have not sanded on some applications and on others just a very light hand sanding with 400 grit. Steve
