  • Many Tacoma owners push their trucks in the wilderness. The all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma Off Road has enhancements that make it a better trail companion. 33-inch off road-oriented tires on 17-inch wheels, large front brakes, Bilstein monotube remote reservoir shocks with end stop control valve and an optional sway bar disconnect help to get a driver home from the woods. Tom Voelk checks out a pre-production unit near Malibu, CA with off road driving instructor Matt Frohlich on a course that’s tougher than it looks (cameras never show how severe terrain is).
    Note- these are pre-production truck and some of the finishes and trim were not finalized at this press launch.
    Tom attended a manufacturer sponsored event that provided travel, food and lodging. Opinions remain his and his alone.

Can locker up on the go and pulled out a couple jeeps one had its wench stuck in the ground and its ass sticking up in the air a tow hook rip out and I saved the day if not they were stuck in the woods all night I garantee that

    Insane prices for a midsize truck these days. When they jack up the price of everything it just makes people say "well that's not bad compared to everything else" 50K+ is a lot no matter what you compare it to. Marketing scheme to get people to compare it to other things. Doesn't work with me.

    I drive a 2020 Tacoma with a 4 cylinder for work. It averages 12-14mpg……15-16mpg downhill. If I personally get a 24 for myself, I’d roll with the V-6.

    Tom, Are those manual shifts 'awkward' compared to other trucks or awkward compared to sports cars? 🤔 As a person holding out hope for the debut of a manual Land Cruiser FJ or return of the manual 4Runner, this whole conversation is awkward. 😂

    • @kodiaksride
      @kodiaksride 6 місяців тому +1

      I've had 3 MT Taco OR. Currently in a 2020 Taco OR Premium 4x4 6-Speed Manual. Yes, it is a manual and the shifting is typical of a truck. Keeping it forever after hearing the V4 Turbo and the cost of the 2024. Stupid expensive, yes there are upgrades. Also saw the gas tank is now only 18 gallons. 2020 has a 21.1 gallon tank.

    Your co-driver misspoke. The part-time 4WD system does not have a center differential. Anytime you put that Taco in 4WD, the front and rear driveshafts turn at the same speed. The 2024 Limited trim with the iForce Max engine will have a fulltime 4WD with a lockable, limited slip, Torsen center diff -- very similar to the Limited trim of the 5th Gen 4Runner and the 200 Series Land Cruiser.
    I've done a fair bit of off-roading in CO. I much prefer an automatic when driving off-road. It's just easier -- you can left-foot brake and ease over obstacles while controlling your speed. You can easily startup in sand without digging in. The automatic is faster 0-60 than the manual and gets better fuel economy as well. I only owned manuals for my first 25 years of driving and I prefer them in sporty cars. But this isn't a sporty car; it's a truck.

    • @ScreamsPenguin
      @ScreamsPenguin 6 місяців тому +1

      Not to be the "actually" guy, but... Actually, when you put a vehicle with part time 4WD into 4WD, you're locking the center diff to spin the front and rear driveshafts at the same time. "Locking the center diff" and "putting it into 4WD" are synonyms. The TRDOR Taco has both a locking center diff and a locking rear diff, they just don't use the phrase "locking center diff."

    • @M1911jln
      @M1911jln 6 місяців тому

      @@ScreamsPenguin No, I'm sorry, but you are wrong here. The part-time 4WD system has a two-speed transfer case but it does not have a center differential. A center differential would allow the front and rear driveshafts to turn at different speeds -- which is how your open front and rear differentials work. You can't lock or unlock a part-time 4WD system. When put a part-time 4WD system into 4WD (whether high or low), the front and rear driveshafts turn at the same speed.
      In contrast, a fulltime 4WD system has a center differential. Just like your front and rear diffs, the center diff takes input torque and supplies that torque to the front and rear driveshafts, while allowing them to turn at different speeds. The Torsen is a gear-driven center diff that is limited slip and lockable. When you lock a Torsen center diff, then the front and rear driveshafts turn at the same speed, just like a part-time 4WD system.
      But, but definition, a part-time 4WD system does not have a center differential. It does have a transfer case.

    • @ScreamsPenguin
      @ScreamsPenguin 6 місяців тому

      @@M1911jln Hmmm you're right that the transfer case isn't a differential, but when you put it into 4WD it's essentially the same thing as a locked center diff. I was definitely confused there, thanks for the long explanation.
