Yes I understand but if you want to use the Toyota app to unlock or remote start your vehicle you have your pay a subscription, that is just greedy. It seems every big corporation wants to have a subscription base money making machine.
What if they made those features standard and forced you to pay for them up front and you didn’t want them? Would that be greedy as well? Because they’re not putting anything on it for free… If Remote Connect is free for 3 years and you keep the vehicle an additional 10, that is $800 for 13 years of remote start. If you’re like most people and keep it for 6 years, you’re paying $240 for remote start - but only if you choose to. No one is forcing you to… It’s providing options for customers and the cost breakdown for what you’re getting is not that bad IMHO.
So you are telling me that if you purchase a Tacoma trailhunter, which is going to be in the high $60K and you still have your pay for convenience to have remote start from an app? Either you are a car salesman or part of the problem 🤣
Finally!! Someone who is honest about a toyota truck. Thank you for not just saying this is the "best truck ever made" like all the other toyota people!!! Very much appreciated!!

😂 great video!! That mini fuel tank is embarrassing. The nerds that sat in a conference room and wasted days looking at an excel spreadsheet to make that decision should be shown the exit door.
It’s funny, cause coming from a 3rd gen to this one with the smaller tank… I have almost the exact same range 😂 only difference, it doesn’t cost as much to fill up!
The part at about 5:20 regarding the texture in the lower part of the door is called chip guard. That’s the same across the board for all vehicles with it
I’ve been talking to the dealer about waiting for one without all the options and they kinda just stopped communicating with me. They told me I can skip the dealer installed options but the importer (Gulf States Toyota) puts all of their crap on every single one, guess they think everyone is still going to buy. They have made sure I won’t be buying!
Same here, I was turned off by that. I have found about 1 out of every 1 trucks I find have very minimal options but then it's ALWAYS either white or black. I guess they figure I'd you don't want options you don't want an adventurous color...
It's a shame the market has shifted from buyer to seller. Last 2 times I bought my truck and my wife's car, it was simple to negotiate "I'm not paying for the add ons", got below sticker price, and got to keep the accessories.
Please add the Frontier to the comparison, I took one for a drive the other day, was pleasantly surprised, the simplistic approach, v6 power train and price point makes an awesome alternative.
I had a different experience. Thought it felt and looked cheap. It needs a major refresh. The steering was a deal breaker for me. I have no idea what midsize truck I would by now if I had to make a choice. I’ve drove the Tacoma and Nissan. Still need to drive the Canyon, Colorado, and Ranger.
So glad you mentioned the entry height at 12:57 and that Toyota made this high enough. I'm 6'4" with back issues and cannot get into many vehicles because of this. That one dimension knocks out 75% of vehicles for me.
So far no one has compared the storage behind and below the rear seat to the 2023 Tacoma. My 2023 Tacoma has huge storage areas behind and below the seats and the main reason for not buying a Ranger. Tools, cleaning stuff, hydraulic jack, bags, extra drinks etc. are some of the stuff I store. The 2024 Tacoma does not appear to have the same storage especially behind the seats.
While the 3rd gen Tacoma rear seat storage was nice for small items, the negative regarding the 3rd gen rear seat was the need to flip the bottom seat cushion forward to create a flat surface to carry heavy, dirty, pointy or bulky items. The rear seat headrests needed to be removed, or the front seat first needed to be moved forward, then the rear seat-back could be folded down for a flat load surface. It's as if the 3 rd gen rear seat was copied from the SUV 4Runner, instead of operating like a Ford F-150 or Honda Ridgeline fold up rear seat, where you could carry taller items like pressure washers, wheeled portable tool boxes or small wood chippers sitting on the floor inside the cab in an upright position.
so, i just test drove one the other day. it seems the storage underneath is slightly bigger. there is still a storage slot behind the seat. so neither of those disappeared
It actually has more storage room… most of the folks whining and moaning about this new truck have not driven one and have no clue. It’s simply better in every way.
from what I have seen elsewhere, remote start can be done by short press lock x2 and then long press x1. can you verify? Subscription only remote start would be deal breaker
i overlooked the frontier. then my tacoma sprung its second timing cover leak and i had enough. went and test drove everything. frontier pro4x genuinely impressed me. it felt like what the tacoma could’ve and should’ve been. perfect blend of new and old school. smooth shifts. plenty of power great seats. just enough off road capability for my needs. got a nearly 20% discount and bought a pro4x.
Awesome review. I got my 24 TRD Off road premium to replace my 22 Off Road premium, and what a world of difference.. it makes the gen 3 tacomas feel like an old piece of crap. Literally so much better in every way.. especially the engine.
Love my decisions then! Got TRD Off Road with just the upgraded 14in screen, heated seats, bed liner and no other options. No pred steps, no wonky additional junk. And at 6'4" I echo that sentiment, I'm so happy I can finally buy a Taco. Also, won't be shocked to see an aftermarket soft touch cover for the top of the door card to easily resolve the plastic issue but it's the first thing I noticed in the truck.
You guys did a great job on this review I just got done test driving the Toyota Tacoma I’m 65 and in general, I don’t fit in many Toyota vehicles, but I did find the Toyota Tacoma to be very comfortable and comparison anything else has ever made
This my first taco and I love it but had those small bed frame top edges also loose and wonky,,,did you have the same issue? Also I wish it had better MPG
So glad I have my 2022 TRD sport Tacoma. Perfect quality and engine and big gas tank and nothing rattles. Washed and cleaned it today and it is gorgeous
I had a 2007 Tacoma with a composite bed. I can contest that with much abuse and hauling that bed was as good as the day I bought it 13 yrs later. The draw back was it was light which made the ass end Squirrley. The bottom texture is chip coating. Never had my Tacoma chip in those places. My 2020 Tundra has a steel bed and I had to put a bed rug kit in it so I would not dent it. A lot of that trash was ordered or added by the dealer as add on rip offs.
hold up... ppl complaining about those plastic useless beauty covers; now that it's off- ya'll make a new complaint about it not having one. Pick a struggle!
Just bought v8 full size titan w/4k miles top of the line platinum reserve for 53k. Mainly, I didn't like back seat room from tacomas or other midsize trucks. But these guys are showing me more reasons. I'm glad I bought my titan. 5yr bumper to bumper, spray in rear liner, heated rear seats, luxery leather seats, storage locking bins in bed which are easily removeable and on and on.
Bravo for me i got lucky to find a 2023 Taco 2 wheel rear drive. I have no desire for off roading or towing a horse trailer. Its a in line 4 banger 20.1 gallon fuel tank and i was getting 30 miles to the gallon on the highway using cruise control. The bedliner is very strong and lite weight .Take 60 pounds of vs. metal liner. I dont need all the bells and whistles . The SR5 sits high . Celestial Silver is nice to reflect heat and more visible for night driving as head lights bounce off silver .
Hey that’s pretty great! We have determined that the Tacoma has similar range to its competitors, but the low fuel light is Uber conservative, telling you it has no range when we’re are several gallons left.
lol I have a 33 gallon tank on my bighorn. Can go 600 miles in the summer. Why do manufacturers spend time and money to get fuel efficiency then screw u over with little tank???
So the remote start goes away on the key fob? Or just the App. On my third gen the remote start works from the fob, but you have to pay a subscription for the app.
Thumbs up for your comments about the Predator tube steps. I have them on my 2021 Tundra. Hate them .... did I say hate? I HATE THEM! They are dangerous and practically useless. Easy for my foot to slide off getting in and out. Slick when wet. Have to focus on placing my foot on the step or run the risk of busting my shin.
Great review, the best thing about the new taco other than the power train has been the new seats. They always sucked before and always shifting my butt to get comfortable. This truck is a pleasure to drive IMO. If you can afford it the premium package gives you many options and ventilated seats is by far the best thing on hot days.
Did you ever contact Toyota about the top bed frame having those flimsy edges? I got this exact truck, and color and the end parts are also loose and annoying, seems like it can easily be pulled and broken,,thinking of contacting the dealership ASAP and seeing what can be done about this?
Great video! The tank size is confusing to me also. My 2003 Nissan Altima has a 21 GL tank!... Thats a 21yrs old mid size sedan! Nobody wants frequent stops to the gas station. Then the engine cover is another thing I dislike a lot mostly for the noise but also it looks bad. Lastly, a fully loaded Tacoma TRD Off Road used to be (up until 2023) $45k-46K now its the cost of stripped down TRD OR. The upcoming Ranger and Colorados will be consideration.
I'm going to bet that the small-ish fuel tank is because of weight. Every gallon of gas means a few pounds less payload, for a given GVWR, and potentially might trigger some threshold in EPA testing to give 0.1 MPG worse rating. I've seen elsewhere that the TRD Off-Road has a payload rating of exactly 1200 pounds. If you add a gallon of gas and the payload is 1192, people's heads will think "1100" instead of 1200.
Your reasoning is spot on, but I think the reviewers were correct. The hybrid Taco is coming out later this spring, and this smaller gas tank is probably in anticipation of that version. Toyota is very unlikely to have two different sized tanks within the same model. It is a legitimate complaint to have such a small tank in a vehicle that is 1. expected to tow & 2. be purchased by rural consumers driving long distances by necessity. I hope Toyota is listening!
It sucks to be in the territory of a regional cartel like Gulf States Toyota or Southeast Toyota. They load truck up with the add-on garbage. SET forces you to buy “Toyoguard Platinum”. 2 oil changes and the useless paint/fabric protection for $700.
rear seating leg room could be helped by hollowed-out front seats where your knees would go. Not sure if this is much of an upgrade from my 2020 Tacoma
What’s the difference in price between a Lexus and a Tacoma? The tank size is a sure miss, especially if you tow. There’s probably stretches of highway in this country that you can’t tow a make it without carrying extra gas. The tail pipe placement is a miss for off road use. See TFL truck off road test.
Ha! Most other reviewers slam the sprayed on bed liners. Agreed on the predator steps - HOWEVER, they reflect/defend against many rock dings and chips. Many. What's your choice of replacement TT?
Any reason why you didn't go with the 4X4 model? Do you feel it's necessary or do without? My last questions when you were going through the itemized window sticker were you able to successfully get the price taken down with the removal of like the cell phone package since there's no need to spend that much on cell phone cables along with the other items you were talking about?
Hi, this is a 4x4 model, with rear locker as well. We were unable to take off the gulf states items that were already on the build sheet. Including the cell phone cables, and side steps. Thanks for watching.
@@marklihsu there is a base off road and a premium package. In the US you guys have way more tiers. In Canada we get 2 , top tier has the soft tex seats not the cloth
@@TexasTruckChannel I'm hearing that the 24's are having a lot of engine problems and I'm Leary of pulling the trigger on one. I'm looking at the SR5. Any thoughts?
Great content fellas... BTW, Just ordered my Tacoma Sport 4x4. I say ordered because I caught it early in the build (build week 3/25/2024) and I was able to delete all the "don't want distributor installed options"
How'd you get it so fast! Wonder why the hood is fully double walled - hardly anything has that and it increases the weight quite a lot with little benefit that I can think of. My daughter pulled off the side steps within about 5 minutes when we got our 22'
My 22’ Tundra had similar quality issues IMO they cut cost on plastics, etc. but not on the power train. I luv my crew max wouldn’t even consider any version the new Tacos.
I just drove a new SR5 as a rental car in Kansas City this week. I noticed some of the same issues as these guys. Although the truck drove nice, quiet, decent power etc. the cheap interior (the side door panels were scratched up after 3K) was a real turnoff. My current 2021 4Runner has 36K on it and the interior still looks brand new. After driving the truck, I have to say it was a bit of a let down as I was looking forward to trading in my 2021 4Runner TRD Off Road for a TRD Off Road Tacoma.
I wonder what their reasoning was for limiting the drive features to 4L. If there isn’t a technical reason, maybe they can change this in a software update (?). The subscription thing is super annoying. Like someone else said, considering the price on these trucks, having to subscribe to fully use it is ridiculous. As for the hard plastic, there’s undoubtedly a cost saving aspect. But also trucks didn’t used to be “cushy” like luxury cars. 😁 I noticed there’s an under hood insulator available. It’s expensive for what it’s, but I think it might be worth it.
Bring the truck back into truck. These new so called trucks are all cab with a mini truck bed (5' come on) and I know sometimes you can find a dealer with a 6' bed still short though. My 1980 Toyota SR5 pickup had a 7' 2" bed, perfect for camping with a topper on it.
It's $80 per year or $8 a month. If I want the app start for my 2019 Tacoma that was what it was. But that has a button on the Fob. My 2023 ZR2 also has a dedicated button on the Fob.
i just test drove one. its actually pretty impressive compared to 3rd gen. especially the interior and screen. button set ups/location are good. I still think 3rd gen has a better shaped body though. like, seeing it in person was less impressive compared to video/pictures. idk about the engine. I'm sure its fine for life span but its noticeably louder than the v6 and not in a good way. sounds like it has to work way harder to do the same things. (obviously, 4 cylinder). you defiantly hear the turbo when you're driving and hit the accelerator. Transmission feels good. especially on those rolling stops when 3rd gen cant decided if it wants to be in 1st or 2nd gear lol.
Hope you wrote down your list of issues and took/will take it to the dealer and have them documented. Not just to have them fixed or even to “complain” but for Toyota to have the information to make adjustments and improvements in production. As you pointed out this is the first run of the first year. Toyota is still just as meticulous about their own quality standards as they were 30 years ago when they really earned the reputation. Just recently They took a million mile 30 year old Tacoma back at their engineering facility to inspect the engine. They want to continuously know about issues to improve them. Unlike most manufacturers.
Not a sugar-coated review. Exactly what I was hoping someone do.
That’s what we do here. Thanks for watching 🤟

@@chrisinutahpagano6774 just trying to think of a good explanation. Range under 300 miles is not a “feature”.
Absolutely fantastic review not bashing not fanboy good info so us viewers can make a good decision !!
Always enjoyed the taco looks but they were made for little people. I’m going to test a new one now that you guys approve.
We are happy to report that even Bryan’s goofy frame is comfy in the new Tacoma.
@@TexasTruckChannelyes I fits! Much improved. Unfortunately I can’t have anyone sit behind me :/
This is also very true
It sucks to be in the territory of a regional cartel like Gulf States Toyota or Southeast Toyota. They load truck up with the add-on garbage. SET forces you to buy “Toyoguard Platinum”. 2 oil changes and the useless paint/fabric protection for $700.
it was 399 🤣
@@planoman0935 their Truck is from Gulf States I think. The Southeast Toyota version is $700. It’s ridiculous
rear seating leg room could be helped by hollowed-out front seats where your knees would go.
Ever had a the rear locker engaged on the highway? Not a good idea 👎🏻
How much for the running boards
I giggled when the step was thrown into the field.
Great review, i'll wait for the 2025 model
Ha! Most other reviewers slam the sprayed on bed liners.
Agreed on the predator steps - HOWEVER, they reflect/defend against many rock dings and chips. Many. What's your choice of replacement TT?
Funny you should ask, we just installed a set of rock rails from Cali raised LED last night!
You guys didn't talk about how the tailpipe sticks out to far for off roading.
Trail hunter has its exhaust cut off before the axle from the factory. Dunno why that wasn't just a standard thing.
tossing that Rock Rail.... THE BEST ! Loved it !
Just a step rail not rock rail
Shin Buster we got a new truck at work and they put a set on now every time I get in I hit
need to keep mine cuz my wife is vertically challenged.
I thought remote start on key fob was permanent app remote start is subscription?? 20mpg x 18= 360. Something with that range gage does make sense.
Hold on, all of the subscriptions shown are what can been done on Android Auto...which the truck has. What would I need these add ons for?
Any reason why you didn't go with the 4X4 model? Do you feel it's necessary or do without? My last questions when you were going through the itemized window sticker were you able to successfully get the price taken down with the removal of like the cell phone package since there's no need to spend that much on cell phone cables along with the other items you were talking about?
Hi, this is a 4x4 model, with rear locker as well. We were unable to take off the gulf states items that were already on the build sheet. Including the cell phone cables, and side steps. Thanks for watching.
Composite bed is a plus in my mind
You complain about there not being any sound dampening but then say you like the way the turbo sounds. Which way do you want it to be?
There are no grab handles anywhere to be found on the driver side like the passenger. That really helps many people get up and in the taller trucks.
They have padding on the premium models I believe. The base models don't come with as much soft touch
The TRD isn't premium? This wasn't a SR...
@@marklihsu there is a base off road and a premium package. In the US you guys have way more tiers. In Canada we get 2 , top tier has the soft tex seats not the cloth
Hello, my name is Jozsef I have a 2023 Toyota nightshade, edition Tacoma V6 I got myself a Pedal Commander look it up. You change everything.
Mine came with remote start from the key fob. I did not want to do tha app thing.
Great video, Thanks, I was in the market for one. Did you do a video on the 2024 Tundra? I read that it got a lot of bad reviews.
We have several reviews of the 22 and 23 tundra which are the same as the 24. We should have a 24 review this summer.
@@TexasTruckChannel I'm hearing that the 24's are having a lot of engine problems and I'm Leary of pulling the trigger on one. I'm looking at the SR5. Any thoughts?
Would you buy a TRD off road over the Colorado ZR2 ?
It needs an isolator what for so everything can get very hot
Spray bed liner could be the cause of the edge curling on the truck bed that my guess as it cures in the sun and heat it contracts.
My daughter pulled off the side steps within about 5 minutes when we got our 22'
As the hood and tailgate are no longer made of steel and are now light weight aluminum, double thickness increases strength and rigidity.
Do you stll have the predator steps? I buy them off you 😊
No sir, we sold them earlier in the year.
Can you put a new engine in it? 4Cyl PO$...
That’s a bummer. We do wonder if being a rental had anything to do with that? We are at 6500 miles now with lots of trail riding, no scratches yet.
What’s the name of the option that gives you the black Toyota front grill logo?
The $160 rip off black plastic upgrade.
You do know Toyota has been doing composite beds since 2005. No problems.
Of course we do. They have been rattling on and off since then (not all of them of course).
When he threw the predator step in the field 😂😂😂
I wonder what their reasoning was for limiting the drive features to 4L. If there isn’t a technical reason, maybe they can change this in a software update (?).
The subscription thing is super annoying. Like someone else said, considering the price on these trucks, having to subscribe to fully use it is ridiculous.
As for the hard plastic, there’s undoubtedly a cost saving aspect. But also trucks didn’t used to be “cushy” like luxury cars. 😁
I noticed there’s an under hood insulator available.
Even if you only get 20 miles per gallon you're still getting 360 mi out of a tank I don't know what your 260 and 280 is?
My 3rd gen would estimate my range after a few tankfuls. Its not accurate at all.
You got taken by the dealership. The dealership added the protection package, not Toyota
The protection package was spec’d from the factory, not added after the fact by the dealer. That being said, they can be added on at the dealer level.
I love Toyotas and I had planned on buying a limited taco but just before I came here I was looking at the GMC Canyon.
How much for the step I’m interested ?
You’ll have to ask the pasture.
JK, we already sold them.
@@TexasTruckChannel lol for real u throw them out 🤣
Love my 2nd gen 2014 even with the door howl at times
What would be the approx. shipping cost to Europe?
You'd need to wait to buy used. USA dealer agreements prohibit exports, dealers doing so risk penalties from fines to losing their franchise.
2024 Nissan Frontier Pro 4X has that exact style, rust protective paint job along the bottom.
I would be interested in your predator steps how much would it cost to ship them to 72405
What does Toyota charge for the monthly subscription remote start with your phone??
Should be free! It's free on my Ford Maverick
I believe it is $8 per month
It's $80 per year or $8 a month. If I want the app start for my 2019 Tacoma that was what it was. But that has a button on the Fob. My 2023 ZR2 also has a dedicated button on the Fob.
@@scottcruikshank138You can use the fob for this too but doesn't have a dedicated button.
With those new high prices, I'll keep my 2nd gen. Which by the way I paid off 8 years ago and still drives like new.
How about the ability to fit on a real front bumper with a winch. I hope for this in the future.
We spoke with Cali Raised yesterday, it is in the works.
i just test drove one. its actually pretty impressive compared to 3rd gen. especially the interior and screen. button set ups/location are good.
Try a Frontier Pro4x better bang 4 the buck.
Silver looks great on that truck, good contrast.
Yes this color is the best tbh especially during sunsets
Hope you wrote down your list of issues and took/will take it to the dealer and have them documented. Not just to have them fixed or even to “complain” but for Toyota to have the information to make adjustments and improvements in production.
As you pointed out this is the first run of the first year. Toyota is still just as meticulous about their own quality standards as they were 30 years ago when they really earned the reputation. Just recently They took a million mile 30 year old Tacoma back at their engineering facility to inspect the engine. They want to continuously know about issues to improve them. Unlike most manufacturers.
Okay so I just bought the new 2024 Tacoma, I'd be interested in those boards!
Sadly we already sold them! Hit up Cali raised if you need something stronger for off road use.
@@TexasTruckChannel I'll definitely check them out!!!
