Hopefully you won’t be a victim of tailgate, ( tailgate latches failed effecting 300,000 GM trucks ) Destruct-o-matic the 8 and 10 speed transmissions have a very high fail rate to the point where my dealer kept 3 or 4 in stock Destruct-o-cam. The 5.3s have an issue where the camshaft fails and fails significantly. ( Repair process involves disassembly of the entire front end of the truck ) most cams fail before 7,000 miles Crack-o-roof. GM was using cheaper sheet metal for the roof and a large number of Silverados suffered a significant crack in the metal. The repair was to drill holes in front of and behind the crack. That small fuel tank would drive me nuts. Yes - it gets better mileage then my 2019 tacoma but even that has 21 gallons. New Colorado has 22 gallons. Why only 17 gallons?
The smaller tank is to reduce the gross weight to meet government standards. Even a couple of extra gallons of fuel, would make the truck meet different safety standards.

If i were to ever buy a new truck to replace my current truck, which happens to be a 2011 Tacoma it would definitely be this. A new TRD off road i love the 24 mpg number and for me personally and i think the majority of Tacoma buyers the towing mpg numbers dont matter that much. Most people in the market for this size truck aren't towing regularly what matters is the fact the truck can tow a trailer of this size if you wanted to. Folks towing regularly i think obviously would be looking at Tundra's or even larger. Great video guys keep the Tacoma content coming, cant wait to see it off road where this truck will hopefully shine.
I towed a 5x8 u Haul trailer with my 20 Explorer across CT, NY and PA to Ohio (about 600 miles) and averaged 17 MPG @65 MPH. Both row of seats were folded down and interior full, plus had a rooftop cargo box. First 400 miles basically climbing. The Explorer was a lot more broken in, though.
Had a 2005 hemi 1500 crew that would get 21 hwy and 15-17mpg hwy pulling a flats boat. Had leather and much bigger comfortable cab. Great premium stereo, put a 100k on her and only replaced tires and brakes. Paid 25K otd the good ole days
You got this Andre! Love that "whatever dude, I can't process words, all I can do is DRIVE" mentality... it's exactly what you need for that overnight push. Nice work brother!💪
I've bought my last 2 trucks because of TFL and their reviews. Keep it up. Also, is it just me or does this truck look more like the Colorado than the previous Tacoma??
Conclusion: unladen, little blue gets 24.2 ish mpg. Being used as a tow rig or work truck you can cut that down in 1/2. The smaller engine does not help efficiency or performance when you want to use it as a truck as opposed to a commuter. So, my prediction was correct about that. And No doubt Tommy will agree that you would be better off with a larger engine and get that better performance for about the same MPG. But if you spend 99 % of your time with these things NOT using them for anything but commuting in, it is reasonable? But then, one can argue, if all you are going to do is commute, why not buy something that gets 30-55MPG instead? Trunk, better ride, better performance, quieter.
I got a 10 year old Taco 2.7 and it has been a very reliable and capable truck. If you drive over 70mph in this it will gulp gas like no tomorrow!! Thanks for the review. Now if I win the lottery the 2024 Taco will be on my wish list!
What’s worse as you weigh the Tacoma down with front bumper and winch, roof rack and cases, rock sliders DOM, camper top or rack and tent system, even a rear swing out bumper that holds large tire. Now you are back at much lower miles and wishing for a larger tank. Small gas tank was not a smart idea.
Here’s a Pro Tip for anyone who lives where it rains a lot. Spray all of your washer fluid out and replace it with fluid that has RainX in it. I literally never have to use my wipers when it rains when I’m going above 40 MPH. The water just clears itself so quick you won’t even need wipers until you are at low speeds👌
Just saw one at my local dealer. Way smaller than I thought. Rear seat is useless for anyone older than 13 yrs old. I rather get a Tundra and pay higher fuel prices than be cramped.
I had a 2010 Tacoma for about 10 years and I didn't have one single issue with it. They're great trucks for sure. They've toned down the styling a little bit so they really look pretty good again. If Toyota made something like the Ramcharger in a Tundra I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I like that they have a hybrid but I think RAM has it figured out with the Ramcharger. Very excited to see you fellas test one of those when they come out.
I put the Trail Terrains on about a month after they came out. They have been a great tire and mileage impact was less than 1mpg at highway speeds over the car style tires they replaced. Wet and snow traction have been really good. Highway performance has been great also. Definitely getting them again.
I like a lot of things about this Tacoma but I'm still baffled as to why they put a tiny 17 gallon tank in it. Even a 20 gallon tank would be a major improvement. Once you drive a truck with a 36+ gallon tank, that has 400+ mile range regardless of conditions, you can't go back.
@@mattbrew11bullshit! It's fact that new engines still break in. It's not unreasonable to change the oil around a 1,000 miles. Do an oil analysis at 500 and 1,000.
Great video. It may be me, the angle or the way they are sitting but they look really close to the steering wheel with left knee straight up almost. Just curious of seating comfort and extension.
29:22 18.2 gal, which is just way too small for anyone that tows. I had a Nissan Titan and we'd have to stop every 150 miles for gas, it was awful and our trips took FOREVER. If I can't get at least 250 miles per tank while towing then that's a deal breaker. I was actually considering a new Taco for my next truck, but that range just killed any possibility of me buying one.
Love the look of the new tacoma but i have a 22 Frontier Pro4x and I get between 23-25 on the highway. I just dont know if the price tag for the new Tacoma is worth it.
Roman and Andre are a good duo to watch, I enjoy them. Toyota always seems to force its customers to buy factory installed accessories that don’t necessarily add value to the new owner. The dealers do this also, so you end up having several thousand dollars of inflated costs.
I have a 2006 SR5, 4 x 2, long bed, extended cab. I make a rocky mountain ski trip every year from northern NY,. Once I get my first gas tank fill, I usually get 28-31 mpg hwy.
Adaptive cruise control is one of the few tech options I would pay good money for. I've been to Florida, Texas and back from Michigan several times and ACC makes driving So So much more stress free and easier. You can set your distance spacing from vehicles in front and the system will speed match up/down for whatever is in front and emergency deceleration is pretty strong in case you're not paying attention. Pay attention! My 8700 lb 2020 Ford Transit 350 HD dually camper van has the optional 31 gallon fuel tank with a range of just about 400 miles. It's sad that truck gets a smaller tank. That's a real FAIL in my estimation...
I mean, most people buying trucks now won't actually use it for truck stuff, so when you aren't towing the improved fuel economy with the smaller tank gives you solid range. Many people who live in cities are going to be using this for their daily commute to work or to the store. This being an off road variant, it wouldn't be out of the question to have fuel cans on it for when you're wheeling or camping.
I only hope you change the oil right away, that is pretty hard on a brand new vehicle. They do not recommend towing or going on highway at constant speed. 😢
I like alot about the new Taco, but can't get over the tiny backseat. I know its a midsizer but the rear seat space means it won't work for child seats or normal sized people. At the same time I do respect Toyota for keeping the size of the truck in check and not making it huge.
I don’t mean to kick this dead horse, but who in the real world can afford the price of these trucks and these toy trailers? I live next to a very popular trailhead back east and see these rigs every Thursday through Sunday. My gut tells me folks are in debt way way beyond their means and there is zero savings for the future. A big difference in the way I was raised 🤷♂️.
That towing MPG was disappointing. Toyota should never shrink the fuel tank. 12 MPG X 18 = 216 miles. That was a real deal breaker for many drivers who used it as towing. Tacoma was my consideration towing a 3,000 lb trailer. 200 miles range would be big negative in the U.S. where gas stations are far apart. Toyota never did their market research despite located in in Texas. I may have to buy extra gas container if I buy it. Many auto manufacturers never considered range of a vehicle on fuel tank size. I had a 1984 Buick Century years ago. The car had a V6 and 15.6 gal tank with a 16 MPG average. I had to fill up gas every 200 miles or less. I found out the reason GM put a smaller tank because they tested the car with a 4 cylinder to meet corporate MPG. In reality even the V6 was under power. The best MPG car I ad was a 1981 280ZX with a 21 gal fuel tank and 25+ MPG on the highway so the range was way over 500 miles.
I simply do not understand Toyota’s decision to *shrink* the gas tank for the new generation Tacoma. I really hope they grow that tank size, or at least offer a bigger gas tank as an option in the 2025 or 2026 when I look at my next purchase.
What’s not to understand? They explained it in the video lol. Yeah it’s dumb but the trucks more fuel efficient so it doesn’t need as much fuel to go same difference
Probably for payload as well. On another video a base sr5 had 1200#. I'd assume the offroad has around 100 less. If my estimate is correct that's barely an improvement over the old taco. And this is a heavier truck so every bit of weight savings counts
Per the payload logic they should just eliminate the gas tank completely and add the freed up 18x6 pounds to the payload. Then Tacomas will be BYOGT (Bring Your Own Gas Tank) trucks. 😃
@@loweredyote8416 it’s only efficient when completely empty, when using it like a truck it’s needs a decent sized tank. Imagine how few miles they could travel if trying to tow 5500-6000 lb? 100 mi?
FYI - I have a 2021 Off-Road. The road/wind noise was horrible at highway speeds and the gas mileage was in the 16s. I added the chin spoiler (off ebay for $170) and picked up about 1.5 mpgs on the highway, but more importantly, the road/wind noise was much improved.

I had a 89 F-150 with the 5 liter and manual transmission. With the bed full of tools, and pulling a trailer, it averaged 18 mpg going from Great Falls to Tampa. It always got 18 mpg loaded or empty.
Guys you didnt mention how fast you were traveling with and without the trailer ? That would make a difference in your gas mileage ? And also if you had a Tonneau cover on the back lots of wind going into that bed going down the road? But $ 50,000 ??? No way , To much for me !!! But it was a very good review , Thank You TFL !
Interesting review. I wanted a new Colorado or Taco but my lease was up and nothing was available. I leased a new 23 Silverado 4x4 LT with the 2.7 turbo 4. So far I am very pleased with the Lil 4 banger. My 1st trip from East TN to Houston and return, including city driving, was 26 mpg. I was very impressed. My overall mileage for 6500 miles is 22.7
The infotainment screen appears to be smaller than my 2023, I agree that Toyota is really trying to steer people to pay the extra for the larger screen
The smaller tanks is not a benefit. Presents the question of replacing it with a larger one, is a larger tank available from the factory? It sure will interesting to compare it to a similar truck with a V6. Try riding in the back seat with Roman or Andre driving and sitting behind the driver! Looks cramped! Tacoberry gets my vote.
Unfortunately, nothing bigger is available. I'm curious what the total range of this truck is compared to the 2023 with bigger tank but lower mpg. Is it the same?
This is why people who tow want a bigger fuel tank. The midsized trucks just don't come with a large enough tank IMO. As far as turbo, it certainly does not add longevity. I also find that a full sized truck towing the same trailer will have less of a fuel economy drop off. That trailer is more aerodynamic than a typical travel trailer. If you love Toyotas, a Tundra can be optioned to 32 gallon fuel tank.
The 4 cylinder truck will get better fuel mileage than the full size 6 cylinder truck for the 351 days per year that most people aren't towing a trailer long distances cross country.

23.5 MPG is what I get with my 2020 Tacoma. I did notice that when I remove the trifold cover, the MPG does drop. I think TFL should get a bed cover and try the MPG test again. I guarantee improvements because of aerodynamics. 🤙🏼🤙🏼
That gen Tacoma was the worst truck I’ve ever been in in my whole life. Weak minivan v6, terrible shifting minivan transmission, hideous exterior and interior, and my knees up in my chest when driving. I hated my rental. I don’t get why people like them.
I was told Tacoma’s with manual get worse fuel mileage than automatics because factory thinks you will tow a lot and put in a lower rear gear ratio. Dont know what years it applies to.

You guys commented a lot on the small tires, and I think we probably all agree. It's likely one of the first upgrades most of us would make. It would be great to see a little fitment test to see just how big we can go with no (or minimal) modifications.
Just wondering how tall Roman is? Is doesn't look like the seat height has been increased that much to make it more comfortable than the previous generation.
Thanks for the great reviews. That trailer is an aerodynamic nightmare with that stuff sticking out all over the place. It is 1000 tiny little vortexes creating drag everywhere. A 6x12 enclosed box trailer of the same weight would have probably given you at least 1-2 mpg better.

And its a lot of long and flat. I live in nm and its windy real bad during those periods between spring and fall when the cold and warm fronts start moving around. Semis blow over. Just traded my 18 TRD sport for a 19 Chevy 1500 trail boss with the 5.3l v8. Better highway fuel economy, bigger truck, 4wd, and the biggest thing is it doesn’t feel like it has to dig deep and scream at high RPM to give you an extra 3 mph. Also have towed with it already, 15mpg and felt effortless
We loved our 2020 Silverado 1500 Trail Boss. Congrats on a new truck.
That seems like such a good choice and i am a ford guy.
Time will tell.
And also let us know how many issues you get with ur new truck😂
Hopefully you won’t be a victim of tailgate, ( tailgate latches failed effecting 300,000 GM trucks )
Destruct-o-matic the 8 and 10 speed transmissions have a very high fail rate to the point where my dealer kept 3 or 4 in stock
Destruct-o-cam. The 5.3s have an issue where the camshaft fails and fails significantly. ( Repair process involves disassembly of the entire front end of the truck ) most cams fail before 7,000 miles
Crack-o-roof. GM was using cheaper sheet metal for the roof and a large number of Silverados suffered a significant crack in the metal. The repair was to drill holes in front of and behind the crack. Fill the mess with sealer and bondo over it and repaint it.
Those are the recalls I know of and given I left my dealership in July of 23 there could be more

No problem if your towing a trailer
My 2021 V8 Tundra towing my 15’ travel trailer will get 10-12mpg…. The new Tacoma was not designed for towing, period but it’s still a nice truck.
I'd still get over 20 mpg out of my 05 Dodge Ram diesel with that little trailer.🤣
For what it is but i mean in 200 years theyre going to look at us with our model 3s corollas f150s tacomas as like a bunch of heathen 😂
That small fuel tank would drive me nuts. Yes - it gets better mileage then my 2019 tacoma but even that has 21 gallons. New Colorado has 22 gallons. Why only 17 gallons?
Factory did the math, 24mpg x 17 gallons is over 400 miles, factory said its time to stop at Buc-ee’s .
I thought reading the specifications it was a 18 gallon tank?

What a great way to break in a new vehicle. Note to self: Never buy a used vehicle from TFL, even a Toyota. 👍
Great veedeo!
Made in Mexico, 24 hwy, 4 cyl and $50k for low end model! Frontier V6 gets 24.7 hwy, many more options on pro 4 x and cost $43k. Also made in America.
45k for taco
Shouldnt have shrunk the fuel tank. 21 gallon tank like the old model with the improved mpg would have been a nice fuel range improvement.
At least 25 gal.
You had "help from Toyota" to pay "sticker and not a penny over"? How magnanimous and generous of Toyota.
Are you going to do a comparison with a Frontier?
$2.88/gal wow. It’s $1.65/L here in Nova Scotia that’s $6.25/gal!!!
I got a 10 year old Taco 2.7 and it has been a very reliable and capable truck. If you drive over 70mph in this it will gulp gas like no tomorrow!! Thanks for the review. Now if I win the lottery the 2024 Taco will be on my wish list!
Not for me, I bought a different truck instead. More expensive but far more reliable and funner to drive.
You mean 2.7
Reduced the fuel tank capacity by four gallons. Maybe space restrictions under the new frame?
What’s worse as you weigh the Tacoma down with front bumper and winch, roof rack and cases, rock sliders DOM, camper top or rack and tent system, even a rear swing out bumper that holds large tire. Now you are back at much lower miles and wishing for a larger tank. Small gas tank was not a smart idea.
Might have been a good idea to wait until the engine was broken in before stressing the engine.
Man it’s a real head scratcher as to why they shrunk the fuel tank size. The range is brutal even with a more efficient engine vs last Gen.

I have a 24 trd pro tundra and no way would i take the ram. Test drove one and it's ok but the Tundra is a home-run!!

I just don’t like little trucks and yes I did buy one and could not wait to get rid of it .
Will you guys be doing a brake in oil change? I would.

24.2mpg seems pretty damn good for roman cooking it at 75-80mph for most of the clips we saw. definitely a big improvement from the outgoing v6.
...And 24.2 mpg without a tonneau cover at those speeds.
@pats6829 that too, tonneau cover should help pick up at least another half or full mpg worth of efficiency
That’s a sweet looking frontier! Nissan sure is doing well with these designs

Love the look of the new tacoma but i have a 22 Frontier Pro4x and I get between 23-25 on the highway. I just dont know if the price tag for the new Tacoma is worth it.
Is Andre sitting so scrunched towards the steering wheel by choice, or is that as far as the seat goes back? Legs look folded and elbows awful folded.
How can a metal box with a bed inside cost more than the truck? Does it have an engine and transmission also?
My 2016 F-150 has the extended range 36 gallon tank and it’s one of my favorite things about the truck.
@@raymikes1234 That truck will be sold by the end of the year...

Yes, it has both port and direct injection. D4S.
I like alot about the new Taco, but can't get over the tiny backseat. I know its a midsizer but the rear seat space means it won't work for child seats or normal sized people. At the same time I do respect Toyota for keeping the size of the truck in check and not making it huge.
Kids will be fine. I was like 15 or 16 in my dad's 2 gen and never thought about the space lol
U just answered your own question 👍🏻
Always the after market you know someone will offer it lol
@@loweredyote8416 it’s only efficient when completely empty, when using it like a truck it’s needs a decent sized tank. Imagine how few miles they could travel if trying to tow 5500-6000 lb? 100 mi?
FYI - I have a 2021 Off-Road. The road/wind noise was horrible at highway speeds and the gas mileage was in the 16s. I added the chin spoiler (off ebay for $170) and picked up about 1.5 mpgs on the highway, but more importantly, the road/wind noise was much improved.
Left lane driving at the speed limit is dangerous in Texas. It's for passing only.

I had a 89 F-150 with the 5 liter and manual transmission. With the bed full of tools, and pulling a trailer, it averaged 18 mpg going from Great Falls to Tampa. It always got 18 mpg loaded or empty.

I suspect most midsize would be cramped in the back seat.
@@tritchie6272 Yeah, you want to carry pax? Get a mini-van.
50K for that trailer is absurd. Truck seems good, just overpriced a bit considering it's lacking basic stuff like the controller.
