Cassia cinnamon - the Chinese stuff, and what's on store shelves generally - has its place if you're after that intense sort of spicy element. But that's the very thing many dislike about 'cinnamon' stuff. Sri Lankan lacks that harshness and is just mellow and sweet. Much nicer for most uses. I keep some sticks around now.

I use the Ceylon cinnamon powder for French Toast and baked goods.

As a herbal or home remedy, diabetic patients are advised to drink or sip on cinnamon water. I know someone who fell very ill as he consumed just half a teaspoon of Cassia in hot water to bring down his blood sugar. Maybe it affects some people more adversely than others.

For savory applications and in most other spice mixes, I use cassia from China, Indonesia, India, and Philippines. There are subtle differences in these cinnamon species. Where cassia has stronger cinnamaldehyde flavor, Ceylon cinnamon has a more toned-down cinnamaldehyde taste with subtle hints of bubblegum, orange peel, and resin.

There are more health benefits in Ceylon cinnamon and curry dishes generally add a lot of cinnamon in them. You can never tell difference until you try both.
Right?? Not to mention that even with their intentionally fear-monger-y framing, the risk of liver damage is only present when consistently eating large volumes for weeks at a time. Plenty of things do that, cassia cinnamon ain't special. I don't think it was necessarily to act like the cassia cinnamon variety is some sort of bogeyman in order to highlight the Ceylon. Direct to consumer via the internet is the way to go. As a Sri Lankan who uses cinnamon in every meal throughout the day, I didn't even know the true value of Ceylon cinnamon. We use cinnamon from our backyard, and this is the first time I've heard about cassia (fake cinnamon).
Best way is to buy the Sri Lankan cinnamon stick and grind them to powder is to ask for a very small piece of the stick where you will taste the sweetness and later the spice or heat. They are indeed very useful in lowering sugar if the combined with fenugreek powder and consumed every morning on empty stomach. I combine both powder into the same air tight jar and it has been years and they do not spoil . You can take one half a teaspoon initially while gradually to one teaspoon while swallowing with warm water. When your blood sugar levels starts going down slowly, you can gradually stop taking insulin for those pre or type 2 diabetic.
@@Gertyutz Here in Malaysia we usually go to a sundry shop selling Indian spices and herbs and ask for. We also buy loose or from the jar. For the jar, you can buy once and if it does not brittle or taste sweetness and later spice or heat, then that is should not be original cinnamon.

@@grabble7605 please get the facts right: the British didn't get the sl coastal sides from portuguese. It was Dutch. We managed to get rid of Portuguese way back in 1638.
Although the name in portuguese is "Ceylan" and British changed a little to "Ceylon" we still use it because it's a trading purposes. It's not just colonial adaptations. We use many more names which are also used to identify Sri Lanka as well. Serendib, Taprobain, Lanka... Etc.
Cope!!! We Greeks have been called like that since the Romans invaded us 2400 years ago, while we always called ourselves Hellenes
@@grabble7605 It's not that serious. Not everybody hates their colonial heritage. There are many classical elements of colonial heritage that have influenced Sri Lankan society and "Ceylon" is one example of that. The country was known as Ceylon for a long time until the nationalists decided to change the name, the reality is that it should have still been called Ceylon in my opinion.
Finally a rightful introduction to Sri Lankan cinnamon
True ceylon cinnamon got a unique flavour guys. It's just so rich...
Assuming someone can find the really thing.
There are plenty of ways to find the real cinnamon. Just need some initial analysis
Great video
very informative! Pure Ceylon Cinnamon is wonderful
Btw the word Ceylon is the old name for Sri Lanka 🇱🇰.
I knew it!.. powder cinnamon had been making me sick!.. Thanks for the data!.. 💙🇩🇴
If you've been eating a teaspoon or more of Cassia a day, then yeah..
Information in this video is misleading and does not research more deeply.
The coumarin content of casia cinnamon is a maximum of 0.2%, only 10 times that of ceylon cinnamon.
With such content, if you consume 2 tablespoons every day, it is still within safe limits for health.
However, casia cinnamon is more aromatic, the taste and aroma are much more attractive than Ceylon cinnamon.
Casia cinnamon contains active substances for preventing diabetes and lowering blood pressure, much higher than Ceylon cinnamon.
So cassia cinnamon is preferred and widely used by companies in the world that produce phytopharmaceutical ingredients.
Drinking alcohol is much more likely to make you sick than consuming cassia cinnamon powder
Btw, Cassia is not "fake" cinnamon. It's Chinese cinnamon, which is often specifically called for in curries, where a stronger, spicier, less sweet flavor is desired, and is a fundamental Chinese spice and medicine. True Chinese cinnamon is also sweeter than Indonesian cassia.
Literally had no idea about ceylon, looks totally different too, hopefully I’ll try it one day, and see if it’s worth paying more
I'm playing that good old Good Eats episode about cinnamon in my head watching this.
"I see you got the yin again, for cinnamon." - Cinnaman 😅😅
Fantastic one Insider..!! Please, price rates (as a chart or some-kind from the trading history) as well as you're producing helthy sides of foods! Wish nothing but the best!
Thank you for this ❤
Thank you very much for your awareness and for making the Ceylon cinnamon feel proud.
As a Sri Lankan currently living in Canada, I see different kinds of brands that are marketed as 'Cinnamon' but actually they are cassia which is not cinnamon. I had to get Ceylon cinnamon through a Sri Lankan retail shop. Guys you should try Ceylon cinnamon, you can realize that the taste and smell are totally different and nicer than cassia. 😅
Love from Sri Lanka❤
Thank you for this wonderful video about cinnamon in Sri Lanka. Cinnamon trees are very common in Sri Lanka. Even our home backyard also has cinnamon trees and we make cinnamon for our usages, it smells so good when we harvest the bark.
You all eating Sri Lankan with all the love and hard work
I'm from Sri Lanka
Some exporters in Sri Lanka are ruining the all these businesses including tea, pepper, and now cinnamon 😢
i had no idea this was a thing until seeing this....interesting
I got an eye opener. Have been using casia for years, not knowing it😮😮
Lots of love all the way from srilanka. All of us over here have been taking cinnamon for granted all this while lol. 😂
Hi peaceful people of Sri Lanka . Love from India
Srilankan cinnamon is real... Love from India
Wow, I had no idea of this. Thanks for the insightful video.
“Cassia could have health risks! *but, you would have to eat a wildly unreasonable amount to be at risk*”
Sensationalism at its best 😂
Most of these videos are "There's this version of something that's 10x more expensive, barely tastes different, But you should buy the more expensive one for this reason that doesn't matter."
"How do we put our competitors out of business?"
"Idk, tell them the other stuff allegidly gives you ball cancer if you eat a gallon of it or smthn"
@@ckingc05 I was expecting needing way less with the way they kept talking it up as it was huge risk. Then mention a whole spoon (which most people can't even eat and will spit it out cause is to much) and it would need to be constantly for weeks. A highly unlikely scenary of it happening at all.
There are more health benefits in Ceylon cinnamon and curry dishes generally add a lot of cinnamon in them. You can never tell difference until you try both.
Just more than a teaspoon of cassia can be harmful so it's really not that much
Great vedio. Comprehensive and clarity. Plz include cinnamon leaf oil and bark oil also.
Its kind of sus when you say that Cassia has health benefits as well, but you dont even mention them and just went straight to the negatives of it.
Both are "real" cinnamon, both have their own specialty uses and flavor profiles, no need to act like one's an insidious plague on humanity
It's a paid video .
Thats insane these companies can commit fraud yet nothing is done about it...
It’s not fraud if they are doing it legally (which they are). The problem lies with labeling laws.
Cinnamon.
@@animalmother556x45 It is fraud. The entire point of lobby groups in the Western countries is to legalized what would have been illegal or was illegal so any crimes can be consider legal by changing the laws. Remember in the recent past, it was perfectly LEGAL for the people in the USA to refuse service to Black African American people because of their colour of the skin. The definition of legality is a joke even today. Even today, in the US and Canada, it is perfectly legal for a 14 year old to get a job. But same is consider as child labor in some parts of the world. Even I worked when I was 14 in Canada and that was and is legal. Just because something is legal doesn't meat it is not a crime. I can basically pay someone to change laws in Canada, US, EU, etc. Look at the history.
It's "americas" fault is basically what they're saying. You're welcome you have a job in your shit country
It's insane that you don't know what fraud is...
I will look to make sure next time in the store.
much respect to all the hard working people in the world. thank you for all that you do.
Good stuff, try it on your eggs to add a pop of flavor 😋
Thank you for reporting on this! 👏
Thank you Sri Lanka!❤
I second it ❤. Sri lanka has the best cinnamon and smell and taste is really amazing. Greetings from England ❤
Direct to consumer via the internet is the way to go. The producer/seller can dictate the minimum sale and just start out with a relatively large minimum order, and as their logistics and export expertise increases, add sales of small quantities that the end users would buy. You will have a direct relationship with your customer and no one in between
Just another reason to buy whole. I've only recently tried whole Ceylon cinnamon and was blown away.
Thanks for the useful information!, I am using Lots of cinnamon, without knowing the Deference,
Fascinating! How do they maintain such high quality while producing so much cinnamon? The traditional techniques are so impressive!
Excellent program 🇱🇰
Sri Lanka is famous for the Ceylon Cinnamon and the Ceylon Tea ,which considered the best in the world .
@business insider - nice video about the difference between Ceylon cinnamon and cassia. More people should be aware. Just a little correction, Sri Lanka produces MUCH more cinnamon on a yearly basis. It would be more like 20 million kilo’s annually.
4000yrs of history😮
Cinnamon is one of the major export crop in Sri Lanka , but Ceylon tea is the most popular around the world , hope u make a documentary video about ceylon tea as well
there is the grind... it should be highly HIGHLY illegal to mis labeling commercial products.
The best and purest quality cinnamon 🇱🇰🔥
Thank you for promoting sri lanka's cinnamon 🙏❤️
Great documentary 👍
WOW. Most Sri Lankans grow their own cinnamon including our family. But still, I am super hyped to see there comments from all over the world. Producers from Sri Lanka are here to provide you quality cinnamon.
As a Sri Lankan who uses cinnamon in every meal throughout the day, I didn't even know the true value of Ceylon cinnamon. We use cinnamon from our backyard, and this is the first time I've heard about cassia (fake cinnamon).
Very useful documentary about cinnamon. Thanks for the uploading this video.
The sticks come in a jar. You can't do a taste test. But thanks for the health information.
This is usefull documentàry to global message from business insider❤
All that work to make cinnamon powder and producers just spilling it out all over like nothing else. Have respect for the product!
This is such a nice presentation
we also maintain a ceylon cinnamon garden and we always try to preserve the condition as much as possible
What a great video
Thank you ❤
Informative ❤
Baru tau klo kayu manis yg kita pke adalah jenis casia.
Wah, cek toped & sopi lah utk jenis caylon.
I did not know the difference...so i went to 3 local nationwide grocery stores and started looking. I can 100% guarantee it was all Cassia and not Ceylon. I am not worried about the health differences. But i flat out despise the deception. I expect more from US suppliers.
Amazing Video..
Thank You💞✨
Finally Sri Lankan Cinnamon getting the recognition it deserves! ❤️
This is really interesting... I have a cinnamon allergy (break out in hives.) I am much more reactive to cassia than Ceylon (but do react to both.)
Welcome to Sri Lanka ❤❤❤
Some people say Cassia is also Cinnamon. But true Cinnamon is a defferent species, and they cultivate it specially as a spice for human use. Cassia is just taken from trees that grow in forests. Its like comparing a well domesticated trained horse with a wild hose. And you try to ride them saying they are both horses.
Sri Lanka has many opportunities for investors..❤❤ You can invest different industries.....🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰
I like these videos, fairly short and informative. But I prefer the British narrator, or the Indian one.
Actually got a box of quils here, labeled Ceylon, but it is clearly a mix as there are some really think single rolls on top which are of Indonesian origin most likely, but below it is the proper stuff, very thin bark many layers and much softer in flavour.
Very interesting, thank you, Canada
