2 years later and still saving lives, man I was THIS close to pulling the saw out lol thank god this video exists! Literally the ONLY solution on youtube.
I love this couple! So gentle with each other as they work their way through this task. Several observations: You don't need to get any "grime" or anything else out from under the flange (the part that is extracted at the end). All that stuff is largely dried plumbers putty that seals the flange against the sink hole. You don't need any kind of solvent. It will crumble easily as you remove the flange. Once you've loosened the large hex nut that attaches the drain pipe to the sink, continue to unscrew it until it reaches the end of the threaded part of the pipe. Then lower the gasket down to the hex nut and smack the bottom of the pipe to break the putty seal. Then grab the lip of the flange with your vise grip pliers, and unscrew the flange from the pipe. No need to risk damaging the sink with a hammer. Also note that witch hazel is the plant extract dissolved in alcohol. Cleaning the remaining putty and so forth can be accomplished with a soft scrub pad, avoiding anything that may scratch the sink finish. Finally, I would install a whole new brass drain assembly. Throw away all the old stuff. It's probably been compromised. Consider avoiding the lever type of pop-up stopper in favor of a "tap to seal and unseal" type commonly used in tubs. They are much easier to keep clean as there is less mechanism in the drain for hair and gunk to accumulate in the pipe. Keep up the good work. Figuring out how stuff works is a great experience!
Wow, GOD is good. Let me tell you two what happened. I have been working on replacing this bathroom faucet for like 6 hours. One problem after another I've dealt with. I finally get to the flange and thought, "Yes, the finish line!". Nope. I was running rampant on UA-cam trying to find a solution. Nothing. So I gave into the idea of just getting a whole new $150 sink. Something told me to make one last push to find a solution and BAM, I found you two. The exact same problem. Can't thank you enough, but I'll try. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, AND THANK YOU.
I watched at least 5 other youtube videos, and they all made it look so simple to get that flange at the top unscrewed. But I couldn't just twist it off. I didn't even use the witch hazel, just the hammer trick, and wow, it worked like a charm. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This saved the day for us! Thank you! We actually didn't have witch hazel, but the idea of using a solvent got us thinking, so we used rubbing alcohol and then nail polish remover. It came off easy after that!
This flange removal method worked! What I had not understood is that the narrow little flange alone would come off. I thought a below-counter part of the pipe would unscrew. It worked with just a couple splashes of Listerine and a dozen hits of the hammer. I can't thank you enough!!
I could hug you both!! I struggled in getting mine out and it was not budging. I then went to UA-cam and found your video. Your method worked beautifully!! Thank you, thank you!!!
IT WORKED!! I was ready to call a plumber and you saved my bacon. Thank you! ❤❤❤ I used a wrench instead of a hammer to tap my way along the flange, and some pliers to help get the flange moving a bit when I couldn’t do it with my bare hands.
This was exactly what I needed! First time replacing my bathroom sink and I couldn't find an answer for how to remove a stuck flange. I used 50% vinegar and a light hammer but same basic idea did the trick. Thank you!!
Thank you! I didn't even need cleaner or the hammer....I just needed confirmation that if I pulled the rubber gasket below the sink down enough, I could grip the silver flange in the sink with pliers, and unscrew it from the drain pipe! Thanks for posting the video!
You beautiful, amazing people! I could not find a single video with a metal flange like mine until I found yours. Finally got the drain out after hours of struggling, and I would not have thought of using hammer in a million years. You ROCK!
Greetings from Idaho....Thank you Thank you Thank you! I have been struggling for more than an hour to loosen the part that is in the top of the sink with no luck. Your method worked in five minutes! You are my forever heros! Thanks again!
Hickerson clan, you helped me even though your method didn't work initially...by suggesting witch hazel to break up the corrosion, (just FYI witch hazel isn't caustic to break up rust) I went with your other idea, WD-40 and after chipping my sink with your suggestion to hammer(unseen spot) , I grabbed the lip on top with locking vice grips and a plumbers wrench on bottom and the drain snapped clean off instead of unscrewing...a win is a win! Just FYI most sinks don't unscrew right at the top like yours, most are almost halfway down the drain. ..and those will rarely unscrew if the installer used putty on the threads. Thanks so much for starting me down the path.
You guys just don't know how valuable these DIY videos mean to a gal like me. They boost my confidence and make me feel more independent. I got stuck on that step and went from damsel in distress to plumber real quick. Bless y'all.
This worked like magic thank you so so much. I had the same metal drain pipe with a stubborn flange and other UA-cam suggestions were more work and got me nowhere. Lifesaver!!
can't thank you enough!! i ended up using the degreaser for my grill - no witch hazel - put on the degreaser, tapped it a few times with the hammer and off it came. just like you guys, i thought it was one piece and was ready to cut but thanks to you, a much easier solution. you guys are the best.!! thanks again
The witch hazel trick came through!!!! Just changed the whole assembly and the metal housing was not fun 😂! Thank you both so very much!!! I thought I was losing my mind trying to get it off. Almost brought out the torch and saw y'all. Thanks again! Subscribed 100%
Worked like a charm! Can’t say I wasn’t skeptical at first but followed your directions with the Witch Hazel and bingo… twisted right off! Amazing!! Thank you!!!
LOL...Thanky Thanky! OMG...I am so glad I found this video! I didn't have any Witch Hazel so I used vinegar. Vinegar is to get rid of calcification which I've used in the past for my coffee pot. At first I did everything you said...but had no luck. I thought ...OMG I have taken apart my entire sink and now I have to call a plumber! But I kept thinking and thought to heat up the stopper and used a hair dryer hoping it would loosen it ....and voila!! I got it off! Thanks so much! Great video!
Thank you for posting this video. I have the exact same flange. I had worked on this two days and found this video. I used rubbing alcohol. It came right off!!! Thank you.
After struggling to remove the flange from my bathroom sink that became completely welded together after 20 years, I resorted to UA-cam and found your video. When you recommended Witch Hazel to loosen the flange I was skeptical and though I would have to resort to sawing it off. But to my surprise and relief, IT WORKED PERFECTLY! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this tip!
Thank you so much for making this video. After 2 hours then found your video and bam....done! I used alcohol. An old toothbrush and wd 40. You all are awesome🎉🎉🎉
I tried everything to remove this flange - I was losing my mind. After watching the video I didn't believe it could be this easy, but the two of you seem so sweet - I figured I'd give it a try. I am *gobsmacked*!! It worked and it was so quick! Thank you, thank you!
You are absolutely AMAZING! Thanks so very much for sharing this. I’ve been working on this part of removing/replacing my faucet for 6 hours. I’ve watched so many videos and nothing worked. I had already tried WD40, alcohol, degreaser & multiple cleaning products but nothing worked. I followed your instructions (although I used mineral spirits), and 10-minutes later it came right off. I’m so grateful!
I rarely take time to comment on UA-cam videos but this was amazing. Your grandmother is a genius. I'd spent most of an hour on that one flange and using the hammer + witch hazel did it in ten minutes tops.
Amazing that it worked so easily. I've been trying to remove the bathroom sink flange for hours but it would not budge. I used an 80% rubbing alcohol mixture with water for the spray. Within a couple of minutes of pounding with the hammer, I could screw the flange right off with not much effort. Thanks for saving me from having to figure out a way to cut a heavy duty bronze pipe.
After spending 2 hours looking for a pipe cutter that fit in a small space, it suddenly occurred that maybe the "collar" would be removable. Found you and sure enough, it worked! Thanks so much!
Subscribed for keeping it 100 and quick! Thank y’all so so much omg! Y’all just saved the day! God bless y’all! We were about yo throw the whole sink away 😂
Thank you for this video. I did not have to use this method but I was about to give up. Then I tried to unscrew the top once more and it came off. I am grateful that I now have this in my bag of tricks. 🙏🏾
I wasn’t real sure how this was going to go at first because that camera action was a little shaky, but your granny was spot on and you guys are a great pair. Keep up the great work awesome video thank you!!
Thank you for this video. I searched for help on this task as you did , but could not find anything other than your video. The drain flange had been in place about 22 years. I didn't know how to remove it. Your video greatly simplified my work. I tried witch hazel to loosen up the flange. I also used a ball ping hammer to top on the top of the flange while I held the pipe. The flange unscrewed easily after that. Thank you for producing this video.
Thanks! I had the same problem and couldn't find a fix on YT either until I found your very helpful video. I used WD40 because that's all I had to use, it worked great after the tapping on fixture. Thanks so much! God Bless You both and your family!
Oh man thank you so much. I’ve been at this for hours trying to get that thing off. Because of your video, I tried using white vinegar as my dissolvent instead of witch hazel, plus the hammer--IT CAME OFF!!! You were so right 🥲🥲🥲
Awesome Awesome video and tips. Perfect for what I needed so I could keep my sanity for the day. All this plumbing stuff is not hard it's just complicated when you don't do it everyday and have to figure out how things are put together.
Followed your advice and damn it worked. Our drain was just stuck and corroded and kept spinning. Put some of that oil around the threading a few times to help loosen it and it worked after muscling it through. Thank you for the video.
I don't have the strength to unthread these 2 pieces with just wrenches and was struggling. It took many searches to find this video and it saved me. Dissolvent not lubricant! Amazing! Chiming in - this absolutely worked. I was about to quit - found this video - was definitely skeptical considering my sink is prob 25 years old gunked on. It worked LIKE A CHARM. Thank you!
I was stuck (pun not intended lol) on the same step of drain removal for a sink in my 20 yr old house and this video was a life saver! I took the concept and instead used nail polish remover on a rag that I then shoved in the middle of the flange for a bit as that’s what I had on hand and I had started this project at 10pm. Then I did the hammer bit and it worked!! Still took a bit of elbow grease and if I had been more patient maybe another round of nail polish remover but alas you do what you have to when it’s almost midnight and you’ve disassembled your sink. Thank you!!!!
3 years later, you video comes to the rescue after 45 minutes of trying with no luck. Light hammer tap was all I needed!!!
2 years later and still saving lives, man I was THIS close to pulling the saw out lol thank god this video exists! Literally the ONLY solution on youtube.

I am loving these two and their video. Thank you so much. As a single woman who’s not afraid to get her hands dirty, I appreciate you. God Bless

This just saved me from a whirlwind of annoyance and extra work. Thank you SO SO much

Omg! I cannot believe this worked. The next step was to saw it off. Thank you so much!
Thank you SOOOOOO much! This just saved the day. No other video offered the solution we needed except for this. You are our heroes!!!!
Yes! Same! Thank you!!!!!
THIS WORKED!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!
Man, did we struggle with this. UNTIL we came across your video. Thank you very much. All the brainstorming was just driving us nuts.
This saved the day for us! Thank you! We actually didn't have witch hazel, but the idea of using a solvent got us thinking, so we used rubbing alcohol and then nail polish remover. It came off easy after that!

Stop it!! I have been struggling for days to get my drain off. Thank you so much!!! Life saver.
you two just saved my sanity this was the only video that i found to address this very issue. Now back to the project. THANKS SO MUCH
I could hug you both!! I struggled in getting mine out and it was not budging. I then went to UA-cam and found your video. Your method worked beautifully!! Thank you, thank you!!!

Greetings from Idaho....Thank you Thank you Thank you! I have been struggling for more than an hour to loosen the part that is in the top of the sink with no luck. Your method worked in five minutes! You are my forever heros! Thanks again!
Hammering alone was enough to loosen it for me - thank you SO much!!
Thanks so much for posting this. It worked on my 38-year old sink!
Worked great, thanks for the video. Saved me from having to cut the pipe 👍
wow.. this is very helpful. Exactly the tip I needed. Using a solvent and hammering it is the trick..
This is the best video ever, it saved me a lot of time!!! It cane out in second, I been working on it for nearly an hour and nothing.
Thank you!!
You saved the day!! Thank you. We had no idea how to get the flange off. It had probably been on for 25 years. You made the impossible possible!! 👍🏽😀🎉
THIS WORKED! Thank you! You two are the BEST!
OK, I needed to see that the top flange unscrews from the bottom pipe! That did the trick, Thanks!
2024 the two of you are my HEROS!!
can't thank you enough!! i ended up using the degreaser for my grill - no witch hazel - put on the degreaser, tapped it a few times with the hammer and off it came. just like you guys, i thought it was one piece and was ready to cut but thanks to you, a much easier solution. you guys are the best.!! thanks again

While it didn't work for me, thank you! Your video convinced me that I could bend it and brute force it through without needing to cut!
I’m afraid of breaking ceramic sink
Worked like a charm! Can’t say I wasn’t skeptical at first but followed your directions with the Witch Hazel and bingo… twisted right off! Amazing!! Thank you!!!
THANK YOU! We also had a 15 year old flange that needed to be replaced. Your video made it so easy!
Thank you so so much. I was so frustrated and could not get that off to save my life. using the method you had on there it worked instantly!!!!
LOL...Thanky Thanky! OMG...I am so glad I found this video! I didn't have any Witch Hazel so I used vinegar. Vinegar is to get rid of calcification which I've used in the past for my coffee pot. I could kiss both of yall right now lol yall just saved my life. It was the hammer that really did it. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! It worked immediately as I was doing the steps along with you. Yall were the parents I needed today!
I used this technique today...thank you for the video. Worked like a charm, used wd40 and a few taps later, she came right apart.
Thanks for this! After an hour is soaked it down and just like magic it came right off!
You are absolutely AMAZING! Thanks so very much for sharing this. I’ve been working on this part of removing/replacing my faucet for 6 hours. I’ve watched so many videos and nothing worked. Thank you both, this worked like a charm. I have been spending on this for couple of hours, followed your instructions. The magic happens!

Excellent video! I used your technique and WALA, the stopper twisted right off! Thank you so much!
OMG it worked! Witch Hazel and a hammer! Thank you 😊
Neither one is necessary. The parts are usually lightly screwed together.
Wow! Y’all saved me. Worked like a charm. I just used Zep shower tub and tile cleaner. It’s what I had on hand. Thank you!

My heroes!! Thank you so much! I watched so many videos before this one and you're the first ones who knew my struggle!! 😩❤️
Thank you for this video. I did not have to use this method but I was about to give up. Then I tried to unscrew the top once more and it came off. I am grateful that I now have this in my bag of tricks. 🙏🏾
This is EXACTLY the issue I'm having...gonna try it now. Thanks!!
Bless you both!! Didn’t think I could get it off, just got it done, thank you!!
This worked great. I just used the channel locks, no hammer. Popped off without turning. Finally something worked right!
Awesome! Glad I found this video! I didn't want to cut the pipe. Thanks!
Thank you so very much for sharing! We were stuck on that step. Can’t think of any solution to remove the sink flange. You saved the day!!!!
Thank you!!! This almost obvious solution escaped me! I was about to start cutting.
Thanks for the video, I used rubbing alcohol and it worked well. No saw required!
I wasn’t real sure how this was going to go at first because that camera action was a little shaky, but your granny was spot on and you guys are a great pair. Keep up the great work awesome video thank you!!

Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. You two are the best.
Thank you so much! It worked. However, I only had CLR lying around and it worked just as good. Many thanks!
Thank you for the Witch Hazel suggestion! I used isopropyl alcohol and used a small hammer as suggested. BAM! Worked like a charm!
Thanks! I had the same problem and couldn't find a fix on YT either until I found your very helpful video. I used WD40 because that's all I had to use, it worked great after the tapping on fixture. Thanks so much! God Bless You both and your family!
Grandma knows! You guys are geniuses!!!
Seriously guys, THANK YOU! Couldn’t have gotten mine out without this video.
You guys are definitely the GOAT! I was just about to buy a whole new sink This saved the day and worked perfectly.. 😂
Very helpful! Would not have been able to figure it out without your video. Thank you so much!
You saved me a lot of trouble. Thanks so much.
Amazing! Thank you for your grandmothers remedy for "everything"
Thank you!!!! Once I hammered the flange, it twisted off like a lid on a jar of peanut butter.
Thank you! I couldn't get my gasket thing off, but pushing the whole tailpiece up did it! I couldn't find the answer anywhere else.
Oh man thank you so much. I’ve been at this for hours trying to get that thing off. Because of your video, I tried using white vinegar as my dissolvent instead of witch hazel, plus the hammer--IT CAME OFF!!! You were so right 🥲🥲🥲
OMG it's 4am and I watched your video... WOW thank you.. I thought it was one piece too
Awesome Awesome video and tips. Perfect for what I needed so I could keep my sanity for the day. All this plumbing stuff is not hard it's just complicated when you don't do it everyday and have to figure out how things are put together.
Saved me a headache. Awesome video TY
Perfect- straight and to the point- I am right now stuck at that point where you were stuck - going to try what you did- will check back in- thanks…
Amazing! I didn't have witch hazel, but 409 worked after a couple of rounds of spray and letting it soak in for a few minutes. With a flat head screw driver inserted into the popup connection on the tailpiece and channel locks on the top drain assembly, it unscrewed! Thank you! :)
This video made the difference! I used a mallet instead of a hammer but between the witch hazel and mallet, it did the trick. Thank you!!
Thank you! I had the same set up and your solution worked perfectly!
You guys just saved me a bunch of time thank you so much!
