I have used that quote multiple times. Unfortunately, keeping up with the Joneses has become so ingrained into the mindset of such a large portion of the US population that it has become a status symbol instead of the moniker of derision it should be, and which it was intended to be.

I’m Swedish, but I have relatives and friends in the US. Whenever I go to the US the first thing I notice is not just the amount of overweight people, but the degree that they’re overweight: it’s like something you would see at a circus sideshow. I only eat organic fruits and vegetables when I go there, no processed foods and no huge cups of soda.
The other problem in the US is all the preservatives and chemicals in the food, almost all of which are banned in Europe and Scandinavia.
Italy and France are famous for excellent food, but you don’t see a lot of obese people there.

I am an American who moved my family to Europe several years ago, and I can confirm this is true. I lost ten kilos in the first two years without making any kind of conscious effort.
Partly it's the quality and quantity of food, yes. No giant Claim Jumper dinner plates that would feed a family of four.
But beyond that is also the assumption of a higher floor of basic physical effort. The downtown centers of many European cities are closed to traffic (or highly restricted); visitors park in large centralized garages on the outskirts, and then everybody walks. Something you never, ever see here is the American style commercial district with shops spread across a large area surrounded by acres of parking. Instead, you park *outside* the commercial area, and then you walk around a highly condensed city core all day.
We took a four day holiday in northeast France a couple of weeks ago, and according to my wife's steps tracker, we walked an average of twenty kilometers a day. That's not unusual, that's totally normal. Didn't get in the car at all the middle two days. European cities are just organized around leaving the car behind and living on foot.
I highly recommend everybody get the opportunity to take an extended visit and see firsthand that the American way of doing things is not the only way. It's been wildly eye opening for me, certainly.

That applies in Canada as well, so much so that all I needed to do was to stop eating McDonalds for about 2 years (I had a whole weight loss thing) and after I tried to treat myself to my first meal, I was violently ill less than an hour later. Shrugged it off as a fluke (I suffer from migraines that don't always include a headache) and went on with my life. Several months later I tried again and the reaction was even faster. Gave it one more shot to confirm and sure enough, could not keep it down. Had to accept that I just can't eat there anymore.

The idea that you hadn't guessed where George Carlin is from by the 20 minute mark makes me suspect you've never been to New York. Not that everyone there is the same but George is the epitome of how people think of native New Yorkers.
I literally grew up in what I consider the golden age of stand up with icons like George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Buddy Hackett, Don Rickles, Jackie Mason, Rodney Dangerfield and so many others (and the one that inspired so many of them Lenny Bruce). I am so grateful to the Internet for allowing the younger people to experience these comedy greats as well as others in the entertainment industry.

A lot of his material comes from that. He started out with stories about his life. But after he matured he moved on to societal issues. He was a very brilliant man.

@@Kelsea-2002 Well, he probably would be offended by calling him a preacher, since he was an atheist. ;-)
For sure, he had a serious goal with his art: Telling people to start thinking for themselves and stop believing everything they are told.
But I think, the most efficient way he found to achieve this is to make people laugh about essentially themselves. This way, they could feel more open, because laughing gives a feeling of freedom, and at the same time starting to think about what stands behind the comedy. Humor opens up for the message.
As a preacher, people would just have had another guy telling what they have to think. The way he did it, people have the choice to be offended, just laugh and forget, or to start thinking about what they just found funny. Probably this was more effective!

George is from New York City. Growing up in NY I got to learn things that even then were not taught in most of the US (Graduated HS in 1978) In Manhattan discussions where we learned about literally everything happened every day. We thought it was normal to just learn from every source every day.
The media( that blames the people born after the war) is one of those lies George would have called out. He was a Hippy himself. We weren't Boomers we were the origin point of the LGBTQ+, the equal rights, civil rights etc, the Hippy movement. This show happened around the year 2000. George got one thing wrong in this routine. He explained how the Industrial Complex owned the politicians (Both sides) but at the close he said "These people vote in these bad politicians". What he amended it to later was These owned politicians from both sides of the aisle get into office.
If you want to know where the Woke movement began look at George. Alot of us knew these things but he was the one who had a stage to say it to a larger audience.

It was traditional to do so when standing in front of the TV with Family and Friends as the BBC service closed for the evening (when a picture of the Queen was displayed as the Anthem sounded).
This also applied in the Cinema at the end of every Movie. However, it was looked upon as being Patriotic rather than being 'Controlled' by Big Brother. Loved George Carlin, but people must remember he was giving a performance. It's far easier to create an act based on the negativity in life, than it is to look for the positives.

    • @AdeboFunkyVoodoo
      @AdeboFunkyVoodoo 11 місяців тому +2

The right choice is not always the expensive one.
It is typically because people don't know how (or what) to cook. So bereft of knowledge your choice is between high volume processed food and lower volume processed that's pretending to be healthy.
A packet of oats costs less than a packet of cornflakes. That's a cheaper, healthier option. But people don't know what to do with a packet of oats, so they buy high sodium, processed cornflakes or sugar overloaded other cerals.
If you know what you are doing, you can eat healthily for less than buying processed garbage. It just takes a little application of effort. And that is the problem, most people can't be bothered. They want to buy it, not create it.
Which bring us back to George's point about Americans being consumers, shuffling through the mall.

Many of them can barely afford their daily life out of the pocket, but hope not to get sick, because a doctor's visit and medical treatment for more serious illnesses already pushes them into debt. If you have only the choice of getting "something" to eat and pay rent and utilities, which is necessary on a daily basis, OR visiting a doctor and get treatment early, this is barely a choice at all... Same for healthy food. It really IS more expensive, esp. in the US, to buy fresh vegetables, and many can NOT afford it.

If you don't think something you say is wrong or mean it as an insult, who gives a fudge whether some troll on the internet will take offense and rage about it, just block them and move along. Don't try to limit yourself to suit their narrow-minded opinions, trying to do that will only encourage them, lead into it getting worse and eventually lead into a depression/burn out

Judah friedlander has some good comedy about America as well.
I remember hearing George carlin in the early 90s. He was such a change from everything else I was hearing in social studies class, etc.

Fantastic reaction. A small correction for you however. This did not come out 6 years ago because George Carlin has been dead for fifteen years. Sadly, George passed away in 2008😢 I sure wish you were here and I could hear what he thinks about our current situations.

One of the things I did to make myself enjoy my food more is to scratch cook almost EVERYTHING. Pasta, bread, desserts, sweets, sauces (ketchup, BBQ, etc) basically anything that didn't require me owning my own farm and raising livestock or growing crops. The labor required is a lot, but you become an amazing cook so it's always something interesting to talk to guests about, and I kid you not, I've always had problems keeping weight off, for years I've always been over 240lbs, I've tried all the different diets but it just doesn't work, but after cooking and making everything by myself, I easily dropped 40 pounds in 4 months. Just from eating food that isn't made with a ton of chemicals or preservatives, and the labor making me take some time to enjoy what I'm eating instead of just going "meh I'll order some McDonald's in 10 minutes if I'm hungry again", and it tastes so much better. Not to mention it's so much cheaper. Bro, I probably only spend $250/month to feed 2 people, for both me and my wife, and these are good meals. All the ingredients I get from local butchers and local farmers markets. We have ribs, steak, pork chops, burgers with homemade buns, freshly made sausage dogs with brioche buns, Asian cooking, Italian cooking, I've made cheesecakes from scratch, anything. I fully believe these chemicals and stuff they're putting in food is destroying the ability for people to burn the food off. Plus I hardly feel hungry. We maybe eat twice a day. Not from necessity, but because we just don't feel hungry, at all except for lunch and dinner. Give scratch cooking a try. If nothing else, the experience will really make you happy with yourself that you tried. I never regretted doing it. Not saying this because I think you're overweight or whatever but if you're unhappy with what you're eating, you'll never be unhappy making whatever you want for yourself, because you can constantly change up what you want.

Hi from across the pond. I've just found your channel and have subscribed. I've watched a few of your videos now and I love your open mind. By the way, my husband and I had several trips over to Iowa on business and found everyone very friendly but the food portions were overwhelming and by the end of a week, we were craving vegetables! I'm looking forward to enjoying more of your content. :)

13:45 very well done by your parents. Thats a major point why we in Germany or in Japan love to use cash. Cash is not only king cash is visible and just smart.

Yepp, German here, and I agree as well. You can't spend money if you don't have unlimited access to your bank account by some plastic card. Unless you have cash in your wallet. Once that cash is gone IT (!) IS (!) GONE (!)
You notice that black hole in your wallet. If you wait until the end of the month to find out that you've been deficit spending there is an incredibly high chance of going into debt without even noticing.

Hi Heidi, I've just discovered your channel and I loved your reaction to George Carlin. He's the GOAT of satire stand up! He told it like it is. And yes he's American, from New York. This 2005 performance is ok, but his best one's are Jammin' In New York (1992) & You're All Diseased (1999) - any bits out of those 2 shows are worth reacting to. Especially his 'Four Groups That Gotta Go' bit... Please react to that next.

George grew up around Columbia University in NYC. He knows the upper class for sure. In fact he rebelled against it hard, as you can see.

Thanks for this, Heidi: your reaction confirms my long-time opinion, that George Carlin is by far the best US comedian of all times. Enjoy watching his other stuff, it's such...so, so brilliant.

2005... was not 6 years ago. George Carlin died in June 2008...
George Denis Patrick Carlin (May 12, 1937 - June 22, 2008) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, author, and social critic. Regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time.
He was born at New York Hospital in Manhattan, his parents separated when he was two months old because of his father's alcoholism, so his mother raised him and his brother on her own. His father died when Carlin was eight years old. Carlin said that he picked up an appreciation for the effective use of the English language from his mother, though they had a difficult relationship and he often ran away from home. He grew up on West 121st Street in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, which he and his friends called "White Harlem" because it "sounded a lot tougher than its real name".
He went to the Bronx for high school but, after three semesters, was expelled from Cardinal Hayes High School at age 15. Carlin joined the U.S. Air Force and trained as a radar technician. He was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana, and began working as a disc jockey at radio station KJOE in nearby Shreveport. Labeled an "unproductive airman" by his superiors, he received a general discharge on July 29, 1957. During his time in the Air Force, he had been court-martialed three times and received many nonjudicial punishments and reprimands.
In 1973, a man complained to the FCC after listening with his son to "Filthy Words" from Carlin's Occupation: Foole, which was broadcast one afternoon over radio station WBAI. Pacifica received a citation from the FCC for violating regulations that prohibit broadcasting "obscene" material. The controversy increased Carlin's fame and he was arrested seven times afterwards for reciting the "Seven Dirty Words" routine.
In 2001, Carlin was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 15th Annual American Comedy Awards. In December 2003, Representative Doug Ose (R-California) introduced a bill (H.R. 3687) to outlaw the broadcast of Carlin's "seven dirty words".
Carlin performed regularly as a headliner in Las Vegas, but in 2004 his run at the MGM Grand Las Vegas was terminated after an altercation with his audience. After a poorly received set, filled with dark references to suicide bombings and beheadings, Carlin complained that he could not wait to get out of "this fucking hotel" and Las Vegas; he wanted to go back east, he said, "where the real people are".
Carlin had a history of heart problems spanning three decades. This included heart attacks in 1978, 1982, and 1991; an arrhythmia requiring an ablation procedure in 2003; a significant episode of heart failure in 2005; and two angioplasties on undisclosed dates. On June 22, 2008, at the age of 71, he died due to heart failure at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
His death occurred one week after his last performance at The Orleans Hotel and Casino. In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated and his ashes were scattered in front of various New York City nightclubs and over Spofford Lake in New Hampshire, where he had attended summer camp as an adolescent.

This was around 20 yrs ago. It's good to hear someone say what they think. We have freedom of speech. We don't have the right to not be offended. Being offended is a choice you make. We're allowed to say those thing...... we're just afraid to. Debt-free is the only way. Debt is slavery.
