I am german and my girlfriend lives and works in Aarhus, Denmark. We simply take the ferry and visit Copenhagen very regularly to stroll the city for a whole weekend by bike and enjoy the city. Love it! ❤
The oldest amusement parks in the world are: 1: Dyrehavsbakken (the Dear Park Hill) or just Bakken (the Hill) about 10 km north of Copenhagen, Denmark: 1583 2: Wurstelprater, Vienna, Austria: 1766 3: Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen: 1843 If you ever come back, you should see Tivoli after dark. Many have described it as magical.
I always give the recommendation similar to yours, that people should arrive before dark to see Tivoli Gardens in the daylight, but also stay and have a look when all the lights come on. And of course I also recommend coming back for each season that Tivoli is open.
And (Duck) with Brune Kartofler (Caramelized Potatoes), Sovs (Sauce) and Rødkål (Braised Red Cabbage) is a classic danish dish, especially around Christmas. You should learn to make caramelized potatoes yourself, it is dead easy.

Compared to the state budget of the time, that statue is likely the most expensive thing in Denmark. Relatively, it cost more than the bridge over Storebælt.
On the other hand, it is one of the only remaining examples of Saly's statues. The vast majority of his work was demolished during the French Revolution.
Tivoli is the third oldest. Wurstelprater from Austria is 2nd. When it comes to fairytales from H.C. Andersen, The Little Match Girl, hits really hard.
I loved my time in denmark (im irish), but i spent most of my time just there for the roskilde music festival (2013) - which btw was the best festival ive ever been to. i could go on about that but wont, ill just say about copenhagen, i had about 8 hours to waste before my flight so i checked out the red bus open top tour tourist trap, just to see the price. After a quick chat with the guy selling tickets, me saying that i had a flight that evening and it wasnt worth it for 20kr or so, he gave me a ticket for 5kr instead which was perfect. i got to go tour the city, get out of the heat for a bit and calm my sunburn, have some quick naps on the bus, and visit all the big sites in the city while i wasted my time until my flight. It was a great end to the trip because i would have been just sitting in the airport for half a day otherwise. i will add about the festival, that our neighour camp of about 15-20 danish people took us 2 irish into their camp like we were their own and made the festival a brilliant experience. they were so welcoming, and jesus that festival... i have never seen so many beautiful people per capita in my life... i might have a type lol, but ive never fallen in love every 5 seconds while walking to breakfast like that before lol. Glad you had a good time too, i hope to go back some day, still have the campsite friends i made over there as friends on facebook
Sure all the lego spaceships and stuff are cool but the real strength of lego is just putting regular random bricks in a big box and let the kids build whatever they want. I remember from when I was young my grandma had a big wooden box on the floor with lots of legos and we built all kinds of things. My favorite of course was the Technic lego's with gears and stuff.

And it’s only the entrance that costs.
I was in Copenhagen a few months prior to you going there I believe. I did a cruise throughout the Scandinavian countries, and the excursion I did took me to Christiansborg Palace and Tivoli Gardens. Tivoli was a very unique place to experience. I understand your confusion trying to get into Tivoli though. On my excursion we got dropped off at the front gate, but our tour guide told us that if we exited via any of the other 3 or so exits, that we would need to show proof that we had a ticket to get back in.
Imagine, living in Denmark, say 100km's from Tivoli - it's a treat going there as a kid. Then - growing up, moving there, like 10min walk from Tivoli - maiking it your treat before going out in Copenhagen in the weekend! Then Copenhagen is soo much fun!

From 1847 to 1864, the first central train station in Copenhagen partly took up a good chuck of one of the current corners of Tivoli Gardens as it is laid out today. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Copenhagen.

Tivoli is the 3rd oldest amusement park in the world. Dyrehavesbakken (The Animal Park’s Hill) is the oldest, and its just north of Copenhagen. Walt Disney was inspired by tivoli when he made Disneyland. Also, the theater show you saw is called a pantomime theater. Its about Harlekin and Colombines struggles to be together. Her father, Kassander, and his servant Pjerrot is desperately trying to keep them apart. Its been around since 1910'ish i think. There are more than 15 different shows/stories with them.
The LEGO Company itself, has stated that what you call there bricks, is Country (regional) specific. Some say "LEGO´s" and some just say "LEGO" (most of Europe). Whether there is an "s" behind it or not..., LEGO doesn't care, both work for them 👍
you actually nailed Amalienborg pretty good 👍 caramalized potatoes, melt some sugar in a pan and boil some small potatoes and just turn them in the melted sugar, so easy and so good :)
Melt some sugar yes, add a decent amount of butter and let it it all fuse together, then add the potatoes and stir them gently, gently until they are light brown...
The Pantomime Theater is an old Italian Art which near only exist in Denmark still, and many actors are Ballet Dancers from The Royal Theater!!! The statue in Amalienborg is King, Frederik 5th and it became absurdly expensive when being made by a French Artist, who was asked to come to Denmark to make it: J.F.J. Saly. But it is still considered one of the finest statues of that kind ever made! It was intended as a gift for the King from a Trade Company, but they may surely have regretted donating it!!! Finn. Denmark
Some years ago it was restored and a TV Producer made a small film from this work, also telling about its history and showing the minute details even on the top of the horse-head! It is surely a well proportioned Masterpiece!
The theatre you saw in Tivoli is "pantomime." The British apparently understands the word as something different, but the miming tradition goes back centuries.
I remember the pirate ships from my childhood and I am from the 1970s. Always try them when I'm in Tivoli. In Denmark we only say Tivoli and never Tivoli Gardens.
I agree that it doesn't seem to be something we say anymore, but when I was young, many many years ago, I would hear 'Tivoli Haven' once in a while.......and if you look up the Sticks and Sushi restaurant in Tivoli, it actually does say 'Tivoli Haven'. For non-danish speakers 'Haven' is 'The Garden' in English.
It is not enough that Europe has a bunch of lovely countries you can visit. It also requires some of you as tourists and I am happy about your open approach to experiencing a bit of Europe and your desire to share your experiences. You often get the feeling that there are many misunderstandings and lies in the US about Europe and you must forgive us for making yourself a witness to the fact that there can be quite a distance between the stories in the US and the Europe you have visited. In any case, thank you for your nice words about Denmark - and come back happy one day 🙂
Tivoli has the oldest still running wooden roller coaster. Makes sense, since two of the oldest parks like that in the world is in Copenhagen. And the first Disney park was build upon that design. The statue is called Rytterstatuen. And is considered one of the worlds best ( In that design ) Its over 240 years old. And its of King Frederik 5.
WALT DISNEY GOT THE IDEA TO BUILD DISNEYLAND AFTER A VISIT TO TIVOLI , I WAS HELPING BUILD THE SMALL ROLLERCOASTER U SHOW IN THE START OF YOUR VIDEO, GLAD U LIKE DENMARK, IT IS A WONDERFUL COUNTRY TO LIVE IN LOVE FROM DENMARK
Hmm...I remember pretty clearly saying and hearing "Vi leger med LEGO" as well as "Vi bygger med LEGO klodser" when I was a kid, so I think both your versions seem wrong to me. 😄 So my versions in English would be "We play with Lego" and "We build with Lego bricks" - the 'bricks' part being switched compared to your versions. I'm sure this could depend on where you grew up in Denmark or even just the groups you hung out with.
Everything is kind of "close by" here in Denmark, especially if you live in Copenhagen, Aarhus or one of the bigger cities. I personally live a 4 minutes walk from where I work.
If you mean how Heidi pronounced 'Amalienborg' then 5:53 is a better starting point. And you are right she pronounced it very well - just needed a less hard 'g' at the end - in my opinion.
Many think LEGO building system is a Danish invention, it's not, the name is, but the system was invented by an Englishman called Hilary Fisher Page, who founded the Kiddicraft toy company in England, he called them Self-Locking Building Bricks.
To anyone reading this. If you plan on visiting Tivoli, do yourself a favor and stay as long as possible in the park. When it gets night time, the lights go on and Tivoli becomes a magical place. Enjoy the lake and the buildings with lights. And the outdoor rides is a different experience in the dark. Also check if there is a light show or fireworks on the day of your visit. The park normally close around midnight, so stay late. Also try to read Tivoli backwards 😊❤
We play with Lego “ Vi leger med Lego” no “s” in the end of Lego 😅 And you can get a lot of adult Lego 😊 We Got the Big Wave” for Christmas its a picture made out of Lego Ofcause 😂 Its King Frederik the 5 who is at Amalienborg Slotsplads and it was created by French sculptor Jacques-François-Joseph Saly and is considered one of the finest equestrian statues in the world
Its not so much the products from Lego that as a Dane I'm proud of. Its the actual company, And how it is run. That truly makes it one of the best companies in the world. Its Family owned, And will never be sold to outside investors.
Hi, my name is Ove and I'm Danish. I live in a neighboring town to Copenhagen. Here information about the statue from Amalieborg in Copenhagen. The equestrian statue is Frederik V (5) He was born in 1723, King of Denmark in the period 1746-1766. The statue was created by the French sculptor Jacques-François-Joseph Saly (1717-1776) and is considered one of the finest equestrian statues in Europe.
And you are easily able to make the brown potatoes yourself, by melting sugar and a little butter in a pan, till it becomes brown and then adding the potatoes.
we also have the worlds oldest amusement park. Bakken, Klampenborg, Denmark from 1583 and 4th. oldest is Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark from 1843 thats why its not so high tech
I'm just letting you know this, in case you missed it, Heidi was at Bakken and mentioned that in an earlier video: American's First Time in Denmark (People, Food, Aesthetic, Bakken, Copenhagen) Pt 1. She switched the '5' and '8' in that video though, so I think that was why she mentioned getting the 'Date' right about restaurant Vita in this video.😄
You should try take outside Copenhagen next time.. 🥰 there are so many places within an hour of Copenhagen Central Station by train just using the S trains..
Adding to Heidi's reply: And there is a video where Heidi talks about it and show some photos from there. 'American's First Time in Denmark (People, Food, Aesthetic, Bakken, Copenhagen) Pt 1' There is also 'First Trip to Europe | Denmark Pt 2 (Viking Museum, Mead, Biking, Tipping)', where they went to the Viking Museum in Roskilde.
Great to see you had a good time here. By the way: You pronounced Amalienborg perfectly, just say it faster and with more conviction next time, since you totally nailed it. 🙂.
BTW, my cousin worked for LEGO in the design department for a decade. She was part of the team that turned bionics to Star Wars after they got the deal with lucas.
there was a bath in germany idk where exactly it was, with a piranha aquarium build into a swimm cavern so u can dive beside the piranhas .... its kinda creepy xD
😂😂 i am Danish. And its not true about the lama. Unless its was a live one. 😊 and regarding having to walk all the way around Tivoli. You could have walked through the park.
Hmm....A Toy Llama sure, but I think if she had wanted to bring a dead Llama, that would also have kept her from being able to enter Tivoli.😄 The agreed upon meeting spot was the main entrance to Tivoli, so they didn't have entrance to Tivoli before getting there, hence they had to walk around instead of through and yeah, they took the longer way around.😄
@@stofamaan Yep, those are the two entrances that I know about, where you can pay for the entrance. As far as I remember they did mention (not in this video) that they came out of the Central Station and then simply went right instead of left, thus making the walk around the Tivoli Gardens to the main entrance, *the agreed upon meeting point*, about 4 times longer.😄 I have never tried it so I can't be sure but I guess if a person have a stamp from having been in the Tivoli Gardens earlier the same day, then they might be able to enter again later in the day, via the Tivoli Food Hall, the restaurant Wagamama or Anarkist Bar, that serve both Tivoli guests and outside customers.
@@mikeyb2932 oh I missed that part where went to the right 🤣 bad idea 😊 I think they use small paper ticket. For entry. And yeah I think it lasts all day
@@stofamaan Yeah, in this video she mentions being on the opposite side of the park, and I could be wrong but I think that is after they have walked away from the Central Station and the wrong way around to where they met Drit. I am fairly certain that they came out from the Central Station from what I remember being told, either back then at Tivoli and/or Heidi mentioning it on Twitch.
You pronounced Amalienborg how we would do in german. The danish simplify it by leaving out the "g" for example. The o like the a in "ball". I hope I got it right.
@@HailHeidi A few years ago we (a friend's wife's friend and I) were on a guided segway tour through Copenhagen, and we stopped and had a lengthy chat about the building and especially the dragon tower.
Lego is the name of the company, it used to be a toy company, where the name was made by combing the words for "play well" in danish "leg godt" into LEGO. The Lego company themself also said them self, that the name of the product is Lego Bricks, and that calling it Legos is not correct.
@@HailHeidi not just americans, but a lot of people. And it is seemingly a very heated subject that is often banned in Lego forums due to some how heated it can get - personally I stick with what the Company history and what they stated about it.

Hi Heidi, new subscriber here. Super awesome videos of Copenhagen. I would love to show you guys the good places. Cya and may the force (Empire) be with you 😊
Even thought its spelt TIVOLI when you hear a dane say it, its just Tivli. Were lazy like that.. 😊 I never heard an O sound in Tivoli. Vi daffer sgu i Tivli i morgen...
It´s not "Ti-voli" but "Tivo-li"..you emphasized the "vo" way too much but the emphasis is on the last syllabel "li", so at first I didn´t understand it. It´s an Italian expression named after the Italian town "Tivoli" where once the ancient Roman Emperor Hadrian built a huge complex with gardens and theatres for spending his leisure time ..therefore the name "Tivoli" became then a synonym for such areas offering entertainment/leisure time activities
Lego isnt actually an object, its a brand of toy bricks, so pluralising it doesnt make sense like if youre going to get furniture at IKEA, you dont say "lets get some IKEAS"
‘LEGO’ is made of 2 danish word LEg GOdt. in English it would be ‘Play Well’, don an English name would be PLay Well …. ‘PLWE’, I think we stand by KEGI!

However our taxes and prices are not.
Also its almost always raining 🙂
you actually nailed Amalienborg pretty good 👍 caramalized potatoes, melt some sugar in a pan and boil some small potatoes and just turn them in the melted sugar, so easy and so good :)
Melt some sugar yes, add a decent amount of butter and let it it all fuse together, then add the potatoes and stir them gently, gently until they are light brown...

i am happy you like Denmark ,thanks for the nice word,,
Hello Heidi..enjoy your videoes..im danish, and in Denmark we say: playing with Legobricks
😊
Love from Denmark ❤
Hej Heidi
Do you know TIVOLI is spelt backwords - e so its “I lov(e) it. “
It is surely a well proportioned Masterpiece!
the statue at Amalienborg is of his royal highness king Frederik 5th :)
The statue on Amalienborg, is of King Frederik V.
🥰
The statue is of Frederik the 5th. A Danish King. Actually it is Said Thatcher the statue added up to cost 2.5 times the caste.
In any case, thank you for your nice words about Denmark - and come back happy one day 🙂
Hi Heidi and Hubby :)
Most people are unaware about the TIVOLI name, so let me give a hint: Try reading it backwards... ;) *Tiny Mindblown*
i like your videos on my country and look forward for more
Everyrhing is a 10min walk away in copenhagen
There are two Lego theme parks. LEGOLAND and LEGO House. Both are in Billund.
In Denmark we don't say "We play with LEGO bricks" We say "But i build LEGO! Enjoy" "BibLE
Hmm...I remember pretty clearly saying and hearing "Vi leger med LEGO" as well as "Vi bygger med LEGO klodser" when I was a kid, so I think both your versions seem wrong to me. 😄
So my versions in English would be "We play with Lego" and "We build with Lego bricks" - the 'bricks' part being switched compared to your versions.
I'm sure this could depend on where you grew up in Denmark or even just the groups you hung out with.
The LEGO Story on youtube is worth watching...very interresting story
Everything is kind of "close by" here in Denmark, especially if you live in Copenhagen, Aarhus or one of the bigger cities. I personally live a 4 minutes walk from where I work.
You said Amalienburg pretty spot-on, Heidi!
5:56
Honestly, that sounds about right.
If you mean how Heidi pronounced 'Amalienborg' then 5:53 is a better starting point.
And you are right she pronounced it very well - just needed a less hard 'g' at the end - in my opinion.
Many think LEGO building system is a Danish invention, it's not, the name is, but the system was invented by an Englishman called Hilary Fisher Page, who
founded the Kiddicraft toy company in England, he called them Self-Locking Building Bricks.
The show you were watching, is called "pantomime❤😊
Bakken, Klampenborg, Denmark from 1583
and 4th. oldest is Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark from 1843
thats why its not so high tech
Tivoli is the second oldest.
@@PSimonsen Third. Wurstelprater in Vienna is older.
@@PSimonsen 4th worldwide
I'm just letting you know this, in case you missed it, Heidi was at Bakken and mentioned that in an earlier video: American's First Time in Denmark (People, Food, Aesthetic, Bakken, Copenhagen) Pt 1.
She switched the '5' and '8' in that video though, so I think that was why she mentioned getting the 'Date' right about restaurant Vita in this video.😄
@@MrLarsgren Which amusement parks do you consider the 2nd and 3rd oldest then?
LEGO is short for "Leg Godt" which means "Play well/Have fun. Great video :D
I did not know that any other country has a park with same name as ours 😅
You should try take outside Copenhagen next time.. 🥰 there are so many places within an hour of Copenhagen Central Station by train just using the S trains..
You Did very Well :).
in japan they have built an exact replica of Tivoli.
If you get back there i bakken. There has the oldest rollercoster in the world. Year 1583. 😊😊 there will be more to see in denmark 😉😉
We did go to bakken and it was so cute. :)
Adding to Heidi's reply:
And there is a video where Heidi talks about it and show some photos from there.
'American's First Time in Denmark (People, Food, Aesthetic, Bakken, Copenhagen) Pt 1'
There is also 'First Trip to Europe | Denmark Pt 2 (Viking Museum, Mead, Biking, Tipping)', where they went to the Viking Museum in Roskilde.
Credevo si parlasse di Tivoli vicino Roma, splendida per chi non la conosce.
Great to see you had a good time here. By the way: You pronounced Amalienborg perfectly, just say it faster and with more conviction next time, since you totally nailed it. 🙂.
I am a Dane, I have been to Tivoli many a time... I did not know it full name was Tivoli gardens...
We definitely have a dark thing going on in Denmark 😂. Halloween is the only holiday that we've adopted totally and absolutely loves it.
Oh wow, that sounds terrifying. Haha
Just been there about 2 hours ago
😂😂 i am Danish. And its not true about the lama. Unless its was a live one. 😊 and regarding having to walk all the way around Tivoli. You could have walked through the park.
Hmm....A Toy Llama sure, but I think if she had wanted to bring a dead Llama, that would also have kept her from being able to enter Tivoli.😄
The agreed upon meeting spot was the main entrance to Tivoli, so they didn't have entrance to Tivoli before getting there, hence they had to walk around instead of through and yeah, they took the longer way around.😄
@@mikeyb2932 there are two instrenses where you can pay I believe. Train station side. And main gate.
@@stofamaan Yep, those are the two entrances that I know about, where you can pay for the entrance.
As far as I remember they did mention (not in this video) that they came out of the Central Station and then simply went right instead of left, thus making the walk around the Tivoli Gardens to the main entrance, *the agreed upon meeting point*, about 4 times longer.😄
I have never tried it so I can't be sure but I guess if a person have a stamp from having been in the Tivoli Gardens earlier the same day, then they might be able to enter again later in the day, via the Tivoli Food Hall, the restaurant Wagamama or Anarkist Bar, that serve both Tivoli guests and outside customers.
In Denmark, we don't use plural, Legoes. It's like mud: We play with mud, not muds ;-)
You pronounced Amalienborg how we would do in german. The danish simplify it by leaving out the "g" for example. The o like the a in "ball". I hope I got it right.
Why do you put an s behind Lego?
In Germany one would most likely say: "Wir spielen mit Lego" - We play with lego.
I hope you saw "Børsen" when in Copenhagen, as it burned the other day! :'-(
I heard about that. :(
@@HailHeidi A few years ago we (a friend's wife's friend and I) were on a guided segway tour through Copenhagen, and we stopped and had a lengthy chat about the building and especially the dragon tower.
Lego is the name of the company, it used to be a toy company, where the name was made by combing the words for "play well" in danish "leg godt" into LEGO. The Lego company themself also said them self, that the name of the product is Lego Bricks, and that calling it Legos is not correct.
Oh dang, I hadn't heard that. Americans just be ignoring that or something?... 😅
@@HailHeidi not just americans, but a lot of people. And it is seemingly a very heated subject that is often banned in Lego forums due to some how heated it can get - personally I stick with what the Company history and what they stated about it.
if you are gonna return to denmark then visit the lego theme park in billund
I would love to go one day!
what state in Europe do you prefer ? and why
Ive videos. Sweden next time?
Hail Heidi, did you know LEGO is from Denmark billund.
we say Lego. "we are playing with Lego"
It is TIvoli with pressure on "Ti" .....NOT: TiVOli. with pressure on the VO.
not seen you recent videos from Denmark before now but you should had hit me up... im from Denmark and working right next to tivoli even though im living 1,5 hours away in southern Zealand (syd sjælland) if I had known then I would have been your personal tour guide and showed things that I love about Denmark if you would had been up for it of course
much love from Naestved (Næstved) Denmark
Tivoli is an experience... but personally I like the athmosphere of Bakken better...
Hi Heidi, new subscriber here. Super awesome videos of Copenhagen. I hope you and your hubby have the opportunity to come in the summertime, it is fantastic and it is possible to walk Lama´s here 😄 If you do and want to see some cool spots just write me.
Lego isnt actually an object, its a brand of toy bricks, so pluralising it doesnt make sense
like if youre going to get furniture at IKEA, you dont say "lets get some IKEAS"
If you spell Tivoli backwards , it is , I LOV IT 😛
Playing with Lego
You didnt try the worlds oldest roller-coaster of some certain type 😅
‘LEGO’ is made of 2 danish word LEg GOdt. in English it would be ‘Play Well’, don an English name would be PLay Well …. ‘PLWE’, I think we stand by KEGI!
the teater is pantomime 🙂
YES thank you!! I couldn't think of that for the life of me. Lol
