There is a reason Kluger sells more than CX9 , like for me practicality is more important than a fancy screen and leather seats. Considering the Hybrid fuel economy, air vent for third row, and more storage space both in front and back Toyota is the winner for me. Reliable and affordable to maintain when it comes to service . Plus A Mazda CX-9 will depreciate 42% after 5 years . Toyota always has a good resell value

We've had our base model Hybrid AWD Kluger for a week now and love it. Hybrid was what we were after and Toyota is market leader. We're getting about 6L/100km so far - unreal for a car this size. Agree that the infotainment is disappointing, but honestly it's a minor gripe. And the storage options all around the car is terrific.

I will pick up mine on Thursday. I have ordered the same base hybrid AWD kluger. I was getting around 18 litres per 100 kms in my Subaru Tribeca in around town. Toyota’s capped price service at $250 per visit is also pretty good value

Personally, I think if 'Fun' was something to put a score on, 'Comfort' should have been there as well. The Mazda has firmer body control, but the trade off is having less ability to soak up bumps. The bias towards driving fun is pervasive in car reviews, but I would argue the ability to insulate occupants over speed bumps / rough road surfaces is more important for the average family oriented buyer.

Great sum up gents - CX9 is the family cross over I’d go for but expensive- if only need five seats the CX5 Turbo is a strong contender 👍

The wood in the CX-9 is real actually. But I think it’s telling that this is Mazda’s oldest dash layout missing a lot of the significant quality improvements Mazda has included on later models (a lot of work was done to improve touch points like switch gear).
Mazda also does a lot of research into driver ergonomics down to things such as psychological impact of touch and perception of things such as throttle response. I studies they found years ago that they needed no greater than a 300ms delay between accelerator depression and response before a driver would notice, and found at least back then, that CVT’s would introduce a delay that drivers would negatively notice - hence decided never to go down CVT route until they improved.
Toyota on the other hand seems to prioritise storage over driver comfort. Choice of materials is far less of a concern too.
Toyota should be benchmarking against cars like the Mazda and in the 6 year gap I don’t think Toyota leap frogged like it should have.
Anyone who isn’t a driver will prefer the softness of the Toyota’s suspension though.

Yep. Despite it being more thirsty than the hybrid, the V6 is much quicker and makes that hybrid slowwwww plus the hybrid is much more expensive so it'll take a while to make it up in the long run.

I own the v6 kluger grande which costs 7K less than a hybrid, and more fun to drive. Iove the panoramic sunroof, third row air vents, and turn by turn navigation on the digital dashboard. V6 is powerful, 0-100km in 7.5s. i agree the 8” screen is small, but it is touchscreen. Cx9 no touchscreen. I can see from the rear view camera no problems.

I just don't like the fact that Toyota treats their Aus/Nz/UK markets with that small infotainment screen and no wireless charging. It make sense on the base models, but not when you pay almost $80K on the top model.

I think they do it on purpose so that in a year or two they can bring in a small change to attract more buyers. Right now, they are hybrid so they know they can win with less considering the fact there isn’t another large suv hybrid at this price range

Like the looks of the Kruger, like the hybrid economy, hate the interior, especially dashboard and infotainment. The Mazda would get my money, being quite big enough and great to drive with a wonderful interior.

Should have put the V6 Kluger up against the CX9
With the 8speed auto and less wieght than the hybrid , it is a vastly better drive .
Probably my only point of agreement with you is the dissapointment with a small info screen.
That said in practice the Kluger screen works fine .

The top spec cx-9 is a Azami LE not the Azami as shown. But i also don’t understand both cars hybrid or turbo such small gutless engines in 2 tonne cars, a car with such heft should have some guts to counteract the weight

I am looking to drive long distance, maybe around Australia. For this purpose, the Kluger is better because of the service distance and price, full sized spare tyre, spare parts availability and low fuel consumption.

@@777tillinfinity If you are interested, I have done significantly more research and while I personally have not gone ahead and have changed my plans, the best vehicle for my purposes ended up being the Hyundai Santa Fe. Specifically Hyundai (Not the Kia version) and specifically the lowest model in diesel. I did not like the higher grades.

The Mazda is mandated to run on unleaded 91ron while the petrol motor in the hybrid Toyota is mandated for premium 95ron ... so the savings on fuel peg back a bit there.

Fairly subjective. I like a soft comfy cruise ride and the reviewers wanted a sporty drive,so they gave it to the Mazda on points. I have owned 3 cars with a turbo and will never buy another, as I hate even the slightest hint of turbo lag.

You do realise Mazda turbo engines barely have any turbo lag as it has instant power and torque when you are over 2000 rpm,

Jeff, you're right - the boys did mention personal preference plays a role when it comes to the chassis tune. Although while the Mazda is sportier, it's still a comfy cruiser. Plus the Mazda is miles ahead when it comes to interior quality and its infotainment system. It also edges the Kluger for second/third row comfort.

Oh men you should consider wagons. These things have 550-580 liters of space. Even C-segment wagons in Europe have more luggage room. Mazda 6 wagon 580liters, VW passat 650 liter and Skoda superb even more !

Had been looking into the 2017-2020 Toyota kluger for a family vehicle ,but when I'd discovered the same vehicle is sold in the states called the highlander and uses the same 8 speed auto transmission as the Australian Kluger I've decided not to, apparently there are shxxxxt load of laws suits in American to do with this transmission not working as intended and yes they are the same transmission on the Australian delivered Klugers

Would seem to me that you have seriously left serious differences without the weighting they deserve. Not only does the Mazda have a significant fuel consumption disadvantage, it also must use premium fuel & when you factor the cost of premium & consumption, you get a serious disadvantage. No score allocated to such a significant difference. I love both cars, but your comparisons were shallow.

I am existing customers with Toyota since 15 years but now I am feel boring with Toyota because Toyota charge extra money then other company car but less features . You can see Toyota Prado design to old Mostly Modern generation don't like interior design they start buy others Brand like Mazda, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, these company car have beautiful inter design and less price.
You can see Toyota made new Kluger but front grille design rubbish this design same like 2016 model 😡😡
If Toyota want stay in the market then they need to think about this matter other wise definately they'll loose business 😩😩😩
