When you know you may be in a situation where you need something to work, it needs to do what you want done! In this case, my 1989 Yamaha Moto 4 is going to be used in pit vehicle duty at the race track this year. It’s a good little machine that has proven itself to be a little workhorse. It has one drawback, the lighting is awful. If I need to work on my El Camino at the track after dark and I need some light, the original headlight isn’t going to cut it. I went and found the cheapest pair of cube headlights on Amazon to put on this ATV. The results were surprising!
The process is pretty simple, I first checked with my shop manual and found that it conveniently forgot this little machine exists. Luckily, the lighting circuit on all of the Yamaha’s through the 2000’s all had the same color wires for the low and high beam lights. I decided to add these to the high beam side so that I could ride the ATV with the low beams and not blind everyone when riding sensibly and then turn up the lights when I need to. I used some heat shrink butt connectors to ensure a positive and weather tight connection.
I removed the headlight to splice into the existing wiring. Basically, I tied into the power and ground circuit to run to the new lights. After the splice was complete, I used a heat gun to shrink the insulation down over the wires. If you’ve not used this kind of heat shrink connectors before, I would highly recommend using them!
Mounting the lights was easy, I had a couple holes in the front rack already that worked out very well to put the mount through. You could easily drill a hole in a safe location or make a small mounting pad if you needed to.
After this was all wired up, I was very interested to see how they looked! You’ll need to watch the video to see how that turned out!
