I set up in a similar way here on Lake Norman. I like using bluegill heads and blueback herring when I can net them. Had no idea stripers like chicken liver. I thought it was just a catfish bait.
@@acolachi live blue gill work very well, if you have a boat they are good for drift fishing kinda hard from the bank cause casting them out beats em up but if you can drop ghem over a edge like a dock or something that would work from shore, I use them all the time if I can catch them, otherwise I use fileted sardines with some twine to keep my bait on works well
Our recent attempt for striper fishing didn't go so well. Went to San Luis reservior (Oniel Forebay) 2 weeks ago. A Striper hot spot. Took us most of the day to find the stripers. They were all along the rock wall then the wind came up to strong to stay. Went back a week later and they were no where to be found. Real bummer. Will try this method. Wish us luck.
Another awesome video !! Me and my wife retired and bough a house near lake ouachita Arkansas . I hav fished my whole life but never for stripers . We will b moved in by this fall . I cant wait to try out the techniques you show . I definitely feel more confident about catching some after watching your videos . Thanks for all your help!!!!
Thanks for the info last year I had a hard time bringing them in they were hitting like crazy on raw chicken but I could hook them tried different hooks tried hanging on to pole. Toward the end I finally got some in but it surprised me they couldn't get enough of raw chicken as soon as you would throw in they would hit!!
Thanks brother!! You’re too kind! I used to fish Norman quite a bit back in the NSBA days. We did well there. Stumpy creek was our honey hole. Cut bait in that creek was pretty killer.

You’re too kind brother!! I love that you’re using so many methods. That’s the best way to truly enjoy Striper fishing. I actually posted quite a few jigging videos over the last few months. You might dig them. Thanks again!! 👍👍
Sorry about that, I shot that part when I went live on UA-cam on that day and forgot that I only had the footage from my phone, which was too low res. For whole baitfish I hook in the dorsal closer to the rail so it swims up off the bottom and change it out every 20 minutes. If it’s dead baitfish, I hook in the top of head so I can cast far without tearing it off. 👍
I don’t know if you know this trick or not but if you will put deck tape around the bottom of your cast net and close off some of the holes it will make it stay open a little longer and you can get the bait that is in deeper water
Can be extremely effective in the right places. Freshwater thumping works because the stock came from hatcheries where noisy feeding machines threw out the feed. They were trained to eat when hearing the noise. Pavlov dogs. I do this near Lobster pots especially. The big girls are lazy and love the Lobster shorts that get dropped over board along with any by-catch. 👍👍👍
Great tips, I caught a lot of Big Blue cats on Lake of the Ozarks using cutbait shad. Love your channel, I have caught Hybrids on cut bait and live shad as well as spoons. Hoping to go to Beaver and try some Striper this fall. Where are they in the late summer / fall?
Me and my cousins were fishing for carp And then we saw guys trolling and they pulled up a 20-30 pounds striper up lol We’re thinking about attempting bank striper fishing on this one point we fish from while camping We are able to cast to where they got them at
Ha. I JUST got back from the river. I used to guide there many years back and this was my first trip in easily 12 years. Lots of small fish in the river right now. Baits got to be on the bottom. Lots of water so good current. If you can get live bait, any type will work. We used Herring. I also cast a 1oz jig head with Large Fluke. Chartreuse is tough to beat.
Is the rig u showed in the begging of the video good for live bait or that’s for cut bait. I’m a fresh water fisherman but the bay and a fishing pier is right in front of my house trying to get into salt water but have no idea what a good rig would be or what bait is good during different times
It’s good for both. Just use a larger hook for cut bait and a smaller one for live bait. In spring blood worms and clams will catch more numbers of fish, cut fresh Bunker will often produce larger fish. Live eels are great in fall, but you need a float rig if you’re casting from shore or they will go right under rocks.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS I would be fishing off a pier in the bay fur striper ik giants been caught there just dk what size live bait is good and rigs for targeting any size stripper or what bait is the best

Mike, brother I need some help if you can. I live in Florida near the st John's and we have hybrid striped bass that move up from the springs every year. My gramps would come down from Ohio to Target them in March. That tradition died with my gramps and I want to bring it back for my family. Can I use these same techniques for them? And when you say bass minnow is that a shiner or.... I know it's an old video but hope you get this keep up the good work thanks in advance.
Absolutely! It will work. Yep, they are basically the same. Some places have Shiners, some Minnows. Shiners would be a little better since they get bigger.

You can get them on Amazon. Walmart sometimes has them.
Thanks for the tip. What kind of rod holders are on your boat?
Nice setup on your boat
Thanks brother!!
Never tried chicken liver - does it stay on the hook? They are pretty soft.
Yep. Use bait holder hooks. You can also put several on and wrap rigging floss around them to cast further.
Mike what do you think about using cut bait at the end of summer and fall for striper ?
Do they seem to have a preference for Gizzard or threadfin?
Would I be jigging with this Carolina rig or just letting it sit ?
hey mike nice video just wondering if you can use this technique with live bait or should it be cut bait thanks
Good question. If the bait is less than 8” in freshwater I use it alive on the bottom hooked in the tail. I change it out every 20 minutes.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS okay thank you for your help, I could use the rig u used in the video? Because should the head be floating or do stripers feed at the bottom
The head will sink without a weight, but you will need an oz or 2 of lead to cast out there. Just add an egg sinker above the swivel 👍

Does this work for all season in the south, sir?
Do you remember the date? At least the month. That would help me a lot. I don't have a fish/depth finder.
May.
Mike, at what water temperature would you suggest starting to try cut baiting in kerr?
I have caught fish on cut bait all year long but late winter to spring is best.
what size is your casting net?
Will this same tactic (fishing on points, same bait, etc ) work in late summer / early fall??
Yes, but much deeper on the points or fish early or later in the day. They will stay deep mid day.
Thank you so much bro!!!
Glad you like it brother!!👍👍

Is this technique good for the hot summer days?
Definitely. Especially when you find them near the end of points. They will still creep up more shallow as the sun drops.
13:50 not ideal way to land a fish lol the struggle is real
When using these techniques do you cast out and let your line just sit or reel it in slowly?
I let it sit for up to 20 minutes and then Change the baits out.
