The Best Scene in Thor Love and Thunder

  • Thor: Love and Thunder had no business being as bad as it was. It should have been at least on par with Thor Ragnarok - Taika Waititi was back, Hemsworth was game - we’d finally get Natalie Portman in a top-tier role, and to top it all off Christian Bale was joining the fray as Gorr the God Butcher. I was so freaking excited for Christian Bale to be Gorr - that’s perfect casting. Bale is a powerhouse and after being the Batman himself, it felt like a sweet reversal for him to be playing a Marvel villain.
Four solo movies and four Avengers movies into Thor’s journey, he faced great foes in Loki, Hela and Thanos… Gorr was poised to blow them all out of the water. Imagine how much sweeter phase 4 would have been if we had a great Thor movie in there - with a villain that challenges him as well as thanos did, a villain just as menacing and memorable in some kick ass action. I think if either this or Doctor Strange had been as good as they should have been, the bad will towards the MCU at the moment would be greatly reduced.

Yeah, certainly Taika Waititi is the guy to bring us a deeply philosophical villain. I remember how he made Hela into a dumb PS2 boss without any nuance or even basic backstory that's not relegated to two lines of poorly written exposition. For you MCU fans who don't read comics (which is all of you), Hela is meant to be a personification of death and represent its nacesity in nature. As one old Silver Age story pointed out, where Thor killed Hela to save himself from her death touch, but then saw that without her the world turns to chaos, because when there's life, there has to be death. So he brings her back at the cost of his own life, but then is saved by Sif, who is willing to die with him and Hela cries for the first and last time in her life and spares them both. Yeah, so Mr. Waititi took that and made a sh1t joke of a movie. He was never good for this franchise, never.

@@antona.1327 IT IS PHILOSOPHY, DIPSHIT; it's just not presented as well as it could've been. Ragnarok could've delved further into the idea of whether a society can be just if it's built on the bones of the dead and conquered. There's a good foundation there, it just wasn't explored enough.

@@antona.1327 As with most comics, this concept works in a vacuum but not as well as in a shared universe. How can this work with reality that Asgardians are just another group of aliens? There are numerous different Gods of Death across mythology and likewise the Marvel universe. Do they all have power over their stated purpose? Does the same thing happen when Hades is killed? Or Anubis? This adherence to a shared universe with shared consequences I think is a limitation that the MCU is more strictly held to than comics, which have the luxury of self contained runs and storylines that can be massaged and retconned into their overarching storylines more easily.

I think they can both fit in one movie, since a Jane Thor movie would still need a villain and both stories share common themes in loss and death. Problem is that we now got a movie where the two central stories are Jane dying from cancer and Gorr killing gods and kidnapping children to grief for the loss of his own child, and yet the movie takes none of it seriously. I'm not saying the movie has to be overly dark and moody, but you just can't make full comedy with this material.

Them being in the same movie is not the problem since the stories of jane and gorr parallel each other: both are regular people who wield a god-tier weapon that is destroying them. Jane's story is that of hope and optimism while Gorr's is one of hatred and vengeance, the setup is practically a gold mine from a storytelling perspective. Unfortunately, the filmmakers weren't interested in exploring any of this in a meaningful way since it would've interfered with the joke-to-story ratio of the final product.

Overall agree, though one caveat as to why hunting down each god or attacking all at once doesn't quite work as well as his plan at Eternity is shown in that first scene where the previous owner of the sword was defeated by a god. The sword doesn't make him invincible, just super powerful. And Jane and Thor almost beating him also sort of demonstrates this. So his plan to wipe them all out at Eternity is a better one they can't stop. And indeed most of the gods all hiding away having their orgies as they were actually works out great for his plan. They stay there not trying to kill him, while he goes and wipes them out in one swoop without any hindrance but Thor who has something he needs. -Daven

If you break it down like this then yes, on paper it's a better plan. This scene as the opening to the film feels like it came from an entirely different film compared to the rest. The set up for Gorr was excellent and yet there is absolutely no pay off, he was such a wasted opportunity. Gorr should have been tearing various pantheons to shreds and by the time he got to the Norse, Thor should have realised Gorr actually entirely has a valid point, similar to Killmonger’s and Tchalla’s arc in Black Panther, in fact that’s exactly what I had been expecting. Thor to come to terms with his and others failures in their supposed godliness and working to repair their damage especially if Gorr died (another god such as Zeus could have killed Gorr when he was surrendering perhaps to really hammer the point home) and this could set up a further development of Thor as a character. What we got instead was an utter embarrassment made even worse by the great potential established in this opening scene

If Gorr did have a scene like you described, where he attacks all the gods and manages to kill some of them, which makes everyone realize the threat he truly was, than that would have done so much heavy lifting story wise. The movie goes the lazy route every chance it can, and whether that was a choice in writing, or in editing, it really hurt the film in many ways. Thor: A Gods Journey
I would give Gorr the same purpose on killing gods, and I would show the deaths, let them be brutal. (If they can chop Thanos’ head off, have Zombies, and have the Scarlet Witch brutally killing the illuminati then why not?)
Thor is aware of the slaughter of many gods, he sees the Guardians as a fun, respectful family to each other, and shouldn’t take part on Thor’s new quest. They go their separate ways. (AND NO ANNOYING GOATS AS A PIECE OFFERING!!!)
New Asgard is more of a civilisation, the town being a fantasy village. Valkyrie stays as queen, she has change her ways from the chaotic, alcoholism character, to a much more serious, no fun and game’s character.
Gorr is aware of the legend Zeus, but doesn’t know where he is. So he has a surviving god go to Zeus for help, having Gorr lead him to Zeus and kill him. He eventually found one desperate god that knew the way.
Thor and Korg go and rescue Sif. They go and visit Zeus, but by the time they got to the Safe Haven everyone was dead. Zeus was holding his son (Hercules’s) corpse. Zeus is too weak to fight Gorr and believes Thor is worthy to wheel Thunderbolt, a weapon that can kill Gorr.
Thor spends time on how to use it, but realises that he is getting slow in his age. He’s not the Mighty Thor anymore, he is thousand of years old. Right after he joined the Guardians there was laughter, and wacky adventures. But as five months go by there was still laughter, and wacky adventures, but it only surrounded the Guardians, Thor was just that one guy in the room that you would just say “Hello” to.
While training in present day, Thor starts to question his purpose in life. He is no longer involved with the original Trio, he’s not the shouty Thor with a mega pint in his hand.
Thor meets up with Jane in a supportive scene, he fears that he might not win, he thinks he’s getting sloppy, he doesn’t know who he is anymore. In a touching moment Jane reminds him that HE is still the Mighty Thor.
That’s how far I’ve gone with this take, maybe Thor would die, or maybe he kills Gorr and retires with Jane in a cottage. I am aware that I went a bit off topic with how the WHOLE movie should’ve been, I wanted Gorr’s purpose to have a massive affect on Thor. Another god that is new and ready to kill ANY god without hesitation or mercy.

The necrosword is intensely powerful, and I think the best way of explaining away the death of the owner previous to Gorr is that the owner never had a chance to really kill a bunch of gods. Considering the Necrosword gains more power the more gods that it slays. It would also give a building threat, and why he just doesn't come crashing in and killing all gods at once, he has to kill them one at a time and build up power

By killing Zeus and stealing a weapon of the gods, the act of surrendering mjolnir and zeus’ Lightning to other people, normal everyday people to make them superpowered, there is something REALLY compelling there. It has a nice foundation and takes some steps to some really ambitious and excellent themes, only extremely fumbled by its lack of thematic cohesion or commitment elsewhere and the remainder of the offputting tone and details.

I think a plot that focused more on Thor realising how much the actions of gods effect mortals, and how, despite caring for a good deal of them, most of earths problems that he's dealt with over the years have been caused by the actions of god. The asgardian weapons which have killed people, the gods who have neglected their duties or acted to harm mortals, how much Thor himself has done, or could have done in the past and never suffered from. And this character arch could start with Mjorlnir killing Jane, as he realises that the actions of gods, and their relics have consequences for mortals, which he only realises now because its effecting someone he knows personally, with Gor a prime example of how it effects every mortal, and how Thor should care about them all, rather then with the level of disregard or focus on one or two only that he normally does

One moment that really irked me about this movie is the ending where Thor decides to bring Gorr’s daughter after we literally just have a scene where Gorr says that she would have no one cause he’s dying. Would it not have been a better, more impactful moment to conclude the movie if Gorr saw the love Thor had for Jane and how she was dying and then uses his wish as a selfless act to save Jane from dying? It would have been great character development for the character, and pay off moments earlier in the film where it’s established Gorr sympathizes with Jane. Further, they both end up possessing items with godlike powers which ultimately accelerates both of their deaths. It would have been a great moment and shown the writers of this movie had some semblance of understanding narrative consistency and pay-off and not killing off Portman’s character(who is basically wasted in this movie with the material they gave her and disposed of because Marvel doesn’t know what to do with her). Instead we get too see more of Gorr’s daughter now? Who I guess they’re setting up to be the next Thor? But narrative wise this literally makes no sense as we know next to nothing about this character or have any reason to care about her beyond the opening scene of the movie…

This was hands down the best scene; we've been brought up on vain and petty gods in our own mythologies, so it's easier to understand Gorr's disillusionment and motives going forward, especially in the midst of dealing with the trauma of losing his daughter
What frustrated me was the movie is the biggest example of "show, don't tell." You have a literal GOD BUTCHER and we only see him stab one in the neck? There are no threats or stakes, they brought Stormbreaker to him for goodness sake. They could've had Gorr recognize early that Mjolnir was affecting Jane and had an more emotional impact in their battles to have her more involved in the story. Also Thor and Jane shouldn't have gotten back together

Love and Thunder was horseshit and I'm disappointed more than sad because next to No Way Home, I was really looking forward to it.
My mother, whose favourite MCU characters are Rocket, Groot and Nebula, watched the movie on Disney Plus. At the part where Thor leaves the Guardians and they're out of the story, she asked "That's it?" and went off to do something else.
We could have had a moment where Star-Lord uses the Zune to listen to a sad song and then Thor steals it to play a workout track. Or Thor doing pushups with Rocket on his back. How about Thor and Drax having drinks on Contraxia and having to carry Drax back into the Benatar ala Dr Selvig in the first movie?
What if it was Rocket who said goodbye to Thor instead of Quill? Even before he and Nebula became official members of the Avengers, Rocket bonded with Thor. He, along with Hulk, were sent to New Asgard to pick him up, as opposed to Tony or Steve, because they had more experience with him. With that knowledge, Rocket and Nebula being more than happy to see the back of Thor felt really sad the more you thought about it.
I felt robbed of a really fun movie that Endgame teased. I don’t care how much damage control Gunn has done. I don’t care if Thor meeting up with and eventually joining the Guardians was something exclusively for the Avengers movies. You do NOT waste the Guardians like that.

As much as I liked this movie, I can understand all the criticisms. There are so many wasted opportunities in this movie: Sif, Darcy and Selvig meeting Korg, Valkyrie and Miek, multiple scenes of Gorr butchering the gods (I wanted Khonshu to be one of the survivors so he can bump into Thor), a more impactful scene of Thor shaming the gods for their selfishness, Valkyrie having an arc about being King of New Asgard and bearing the responsibility of rescuing the children, exploring the parallels between Jane and Gorr and the overall balance of action, comedy and drama that the previous movie had. The worst part is most of the jokes either aren't that funny or just aren't. And yes, the Team Thor shorts aren't canon which is perfect because they can be as silly as they want. Again, this movie is not bad, just misguided. And it is still infinitely better than The Dark World.
Also, I would've loved a post credit scene where the Necrosword helps the little symbiote speck from the post credit scene of No Way Home find Peter. Sony probably wouldn't allow it, but it's definitely better than their Spider Man Villain Without Spider Man Cinematic Universe. Seriously, as someone who only enjoys the Venom movies, how cool would it have been if Eddie actually MET Peter!?!

Just like ragnorok, this movie felt like 2 opposing movies playing at once. The serious threats and heart wrenching moments get lost in pointless quips and "humor". This destroys the seriousness of the moment and overall story. Both gorr and hela were amazing villains and were wasted. Marvel needs to stop treating every movie as a comedy. Not all characters are silly or quirky like gaurdians. The humor works for them based on the oddball nature of the characters and backgrounds. It works. Infinity war was the best movie marvel has made mostly because of the serious tone. It carried weight and a sense of dread because of that tone. That should be how villains are portrayed. As villainous, but with purpose, drive and intellect. Their intentions should be frightful. Not something to laugh about. Sure, use laughter as a form of tension release, but do it sparingly.

The scene I really enjoyed was gorr in the cage with the kids. It is a little hammy but in the dramatics of switching moods - the mania underlying it - I felt played more on the fact that the sword was speaking thru gorr more and more. Or atleast how it should of been played out if that wasn’t the intention. Pair the acting with way the black and grey scale comes in and out with the shadows across gorr to add a level of unease while also showing gorrs contrasting outlook. The goods were good and forgiving, and now the gods must die. The contrast being very black and white, when in reality there is so much grey in between.
All while monolouging to children, inspiring a deep fear that’s there in I would say all of us, that maybe there isn’t anything to truly heroic the gods like Thor. He tries to disillusion them. If nothing else it could have laid seeds in some of the kids to make for a much more compelling final battle by raising the stakes with the kids getting powers because now they really are thrust into a truly dark position of wielding the power of the gods, and what that would mean. But of course this last part is post hoc so who knows. But they could have set up a film with a better payoff had they committed to gorr being the god butcher.
They could have even played it into the theme of Thor being unhinged by showing the destructions he’s causing in the god city and instead of it being comedic Al play it like a tragedy or a god so committed to his subjects that he curses and destroys a utopia so that he may achieve his end result thus making him a god butcher. It could set up Natalie’s story lines and implications for the multiversal kang war

I still think that the original (comic) version of this scene is MILES better than what the film did.
    - SPOILERS FOR THE COMIC -
Seriously, it's really really good and the film borrows only scraps from its story
    -
    -
    -
    -
    -
Okay, so - In the comic run, Gorr's daughter is already dead. We get a flashback of her, but by the time we first see Gorr, she's gone. Then, instead of bumping into a Garden of Eden-type place, Gorr reaches the site of what seemed to be a crashed meteor - except it's not a meteor, it's two gods who're locked in their death throes. One is indeed a radiant golden deity, while the other is a midnight-black creature, whose inky blood has seeped into the rocks. Both look dead, but as Gorr approaches, the golden one asks for help.
Gorr is briefly taken aback, but then spits back with vitriol. So long as he has lived, his dying people have begged the gods for help every day. And for what? Nothing. And now, a god asks HIM for help? The utter gall.
Filled with (completely justified) rage, Gorr picks up a black-blood-stained rock, and beats the golden god to death with it. No fancy sword, and more importantly, no overly egotistical deity. Gorr's actions are understandable, but they're not logical. Afterall, the golden guy _isn't even his god._
Having just battered this god to death with his bare hands, wisps of darkness from the other deity's "blood" crawl up Gorr's arm, cloaking him and granting him wings. It's here that, much like the Love and Thunder scene, Gorr decides to kill all the gods.
    BUT
It's not done because he was personally slighted, it's because he lived through a lifetime of torment _which could have been avoided._ He's not angry because his god was a cunt, he's angry because the gods don't use their power responsibly.
Then of course enters Thor - who DOES use his power responsibly. He's kind of infamous for it amongst the gods - going out of his way to help ordinary people wherever he can find them, regardless of whether they pray to him or not.

Gore the god butcher being just some bloke with face tattoos is just Christian Bale being his kooky self. It was like watching a preproduction of the movie before the special effects had been added. This movie could do with a Snyder cut. I wanted to see Thor vs Gorr the god butcher, not Thor vs Patrick Bateman. And the excuse given, there were several right off the bat. The actor didn't have enough time to bulk up. In a movie where if the character was comic accurate it would be CGI. That Gorr the God butch looked too much like Voldemort. Yeah, riiiight. As if "a character from another franchise was too similar" was ever a problem. Marvel is getting lazy, it's that simple and it's rapidly killing the franchise.

Christian Bale was an absolute showstopper and it was probably the best buildup in an MCU movie that i've seen in a really long time. What infuriates me is that I was thinking the exact same thing about Omnipotence City, but I only just realized after watching your video that Gorr literally didn't kill any other gods outside of the first scene. What a waste of a great villain, and a waste of Bale's talent. In the comics, Gorr is a hate-fueled, irredeemable slaughter machine who can travel through time, matching him with the likes of Kang in terms of power. Instead, the movie depicts him as a melancholic child abductor with an unnecessary last-minute redemption arc.

Eternity is considered a living embodiment of the universe. If you are suggesting the living embodiment of the universe is a MacGuffin then you may possibly hold to some philosophy that suggests all is meaningless.
The universe has meaning (even in the MCU). 💝

the main reason I'm disappointed with Gorr's design isn't the lack of alien features but how poorly they did All-Black the Necrosword, an incredibly significant and important weapon within marvel with an absolutely incredible design being reduced too a generic sword that turns into shadows occasionally. its also implied to not be that special and one of many Necroswords when in the comics it's a single extremely powerful sword that has vital implications.
In the comics All-Black was what beheaded the Celestial of Knowhere. it wasn't made to kill Gods but rather Celestials since Knull, who considered all of reality to be an affront to his domain of nothingness, saw them creating planets as intruding on his territory. Considering the eternals movie, I have zero idea why they didn't link the Celestials and All-Black. An end credits scene where it reforges itself and turns into a form closer its its comic one then flies off would have done wonders for me.

Personally I didn't really like this scene. Felt it was undercut by some pretty crappy line delivery from the god and overall the focus on sharp dialogue didn't give me enough time to get drawn into the narrative. Bale's performance was ridiculously good though, goes without saying.

I totally agree! It should have been where Gor should have been killing more gods to find imnipontent city and capturing more children to sacrifice then just when Thor was pleading his case, Gor should have appeared out of no where and attacks the city and mortally wounds Zeus upon which he gives him the lightning bolt. It should have been like a race to omnipotent city where if Gor destroys the city, he destroys all gods in the universe. Because again if they go with the "Eternity" plot then why didnt they use this in End Game?

I never watched Thor once I heaed the woke reviews and the the stupid jokes put on. If researched the hosroty of Gorr and was lookign forward to a dramatic movie abou t Gror torturing Thor who eventua;y escape and years feels bad for not kil;ling Gorr who later kills hundred of gods. But no instead of serious movie the director was an imature dick who wasted a golden caste, with Christian and Chris (who made fool/simp of his legacy and character). They should go back and do it again as a serious rated movie based on the comic.
Glad to see Christyian Bale was true to Goor in this video it looks so good acted aweseome. Such a sad loss of talent. Chris you can do better. Do it again please. No taiko tits.

I think that it definitely gets more hate than it deserves...it was certainly disappointing. I understand the complaints about love and thunder more than Eternals. Eternals was actually a refreshing take on the mcu. L&T was a goofy mess with a few highlights.

Christian Bale should have watched the previous Thor movie to know how crap this one was going to be.
I can only imagine when the part was pitched to Bale, it was a serious role for a mostly serious superhero film. He might have thought it was going to be TDK Trilogy like in tone.

Well, I agree that the best scene was the first one, but after killing HIS god Gorr kinda loses purpose to me? Yeah, he hates all the gods afterwards, but wouldn't it be more impactful more emotionally powerful if he didn't kill his god first? The hatred was palpable, so why not hold on to it longer? To me it felt like the shit is real, but also that he kinda already avenged his daughter when he killed his god. I think it would have made more sense if his god have hid somewhere. Gorr filled with rage would not discriminate and would kill every god he sees in his way to find the one he is looking for and finally when he does, the god would use his daughter against him or smth and maybe he, lost in his rage, wouldn't even choose to save her anymore, because his resolve and his mission would blind him from what started it all and from what it was all about - the sword would actually curse him and feed him with rage to the point of Gorr losing his purpose and autonomy. That would be brutal.
What about Thor? Gorr should be his enemy number one somehow. Maybe Gorr could kill someone precious to Thor then the theme would be about revenge, but from both sides. The Idea of the movie would be - what is the best way to deal with that rage and hatred that fuels revenge - Thor sees the monster Gorr become and understands that its kinda pointless. Other idea would be to play with Thors insecurity and low self esteem and his desperate tries to feel like a hero again would result in seeing Gorr as not truly evil, but cursed an broken and he would try to save him as well. Maybe he would try to save everyone, but that would backfire a few times. Maybe a little bit of both? After he understands revenge he tries to save Gorr from it as well?
Nah, this is stupid as well. Welp, at least I tried.

I just wish they had stuck more to the original Gorr from the comics, his plight actually makes you root for him and want to see the gods punished. His point is proven every step of the way as you witness the full depravity of god kind, even Thor whom he beats up and tortures mercilessly in his youth is an asshole and developes a lifelong trauma of Gorr. His arc becomes complete near the end when he brings his daughter back (or creates a new son can't remember) and she remarks how he has now become a god himself, creating life and it destroys him. He's such a massive threat that young thor, current Thor and old Thor who is as strong if not stronger than Odin face him and get their shit pushed in. Only the ending to that comic is kind of half-assed and terrible, feel free to cut that...

I dd actually like this movie. I just wish they had leaned less on the comedy, and went just a little more serious. This could have been immensely epic, and a severe philosophical and identity moment for Thor to reflect on his 1500 years of being one of these horrible gods. Instead the movie just laughs it all off and moves on.

It's a stupid scene, poorly executed in terms of tone and interpretation of the god character. Bale was good but scene sucks
Taika is the clown in all this, he showed his horrible hand partly in Raknarok already.

Actually, the whole mcguffing hunt and obstuse nonsensical way the story went is suspiciously similar to how Star Wars episode 9 was. It really feels like there is some pattern there.
