Lekkie Bling Ring Review: 42T Front Chain Ring for Bafang 8Fun Mid Drive System

  • It been about 6 months since my first review video of my Rocky Mountain full suspension mountain bike with Bafang 8Fun Mid Drive conversion system.
    I put over a 100 miles on the system so far and it has been amazing. These 100 miles were tough miles. I only ride the bike on single track and mountain trails.
    A few things have been changed. I did break the original frame. On of the chain stays cracked. I don't think it was related to the electric conversion however.
    The biggest addition to the conversion so far is the Lekkie Bling Ring- a 42T aluminum chain ring. It makes a huge difference on climbing ability and keeps the motor spinning faster when climbing steep hills which lets the motor stay cooler.
    Big thanks to Matt Hughes at EMpowered Cycles. He actually reached out to me to let me know that he was getting this ring in stock and was able to ship one out to me as soon as he got them in stock!
    Check out Matt's awesome website:
    www.empoweredcycles.com/
    If you are looking at getting an 8Fun Mid Drive kit for a mountain bike you have to get it with the Bling Ring. Its absolutely worth the money.

    I got a 42T Lekkie for my Bafang conversion and really happy with the way it performs on the hills...very big difference.

    Props man! Such good reviews are very rare and I know what I'm talking about since I feel like I've seen every goddamn video out there about middrive conversion kits on MTBs already and most of them are crap imo! I especially liked that you actually provided some information in terms of the speed when using throttle only - wanted to know that since quite a while actually! Hope you keep it up and explain us some more about it!

    I've a full MTB 27,5 with a bbs01 36v 15a. It has its software reprogrammed and 42 t chainring with a homemade 8v sprocket cassette 42/11 t. That's a good motor in this configuration for hard uphill and for medium difficulty off-road.Only the battery, mine is 36v 11,6 ah.. its a little weak for the use that i do.The chain guide is really needful!

    Great review. I did my conversion about a month ago and have ridden it for about 70 miles so far. It is a great kit but the only problem I have so far is that the motor and left crank arm will become loose over time. (The motor would eventually drop down and the arm would fall off If I don't re-tighten them) Also, I would recommend people to install the kit on a mountain bike with full suspensions because mine doesn't have them and it feel bumpy when traveling over 20+mph. (I only ride on the road)

      ngchiwo Thank you. To your issue with crank and motor getting loose. Are you using both lock rings? I only use one. I put some red thread lock on the threads and tightened the motor and cranks as hard as I could.

    Ive just ordered a BBS02B 750w, im installing it onto my 2015 Rockhopper Expert Evo, whole bike has been upgraded by me only thing original is the frame lol, ive ordered the ebrake remote button rather than the brake sensors and im going to be putting 2.6 wide DHF tyres onto the 650b rims, Ive recently put some SLX brakes on which are super sharp but may upgrade them to hope.
    I am also having the 48v 17.5ah battery so it will be interesting to see what the range will be like, I may do a video.

I wonder if anybody tryed the 12 one. I dont need all 12 gears just to make shure the chain fits on Lekkie. Now i got the original 46T steel chainring and it works perfect on the highest 8 gears, but i would love the bling and weight drop of lekkie one. Thanks.

    Very nice and awesome video ...
    I have Giant Talon-3 2016 model with hydraulic brakes and Tire size 27.5 inch.
    Questions:
    1. Can I install this kit and keep the hydraulic brakes and my original brake levers ?
    2. I saw your details about this amazing chain wheel. What's your recommendation to me? considering that I have plenty of uphills to climb on my neighbourhood and I think 25 MpH is the max speed I want, the mean is around 15-20 when going to/from work/home.
    3. Does this blue chain wheel need any extra stuff to be installed in BBS kit ?
    I just want to collect opinions and experiences like yours here.
    Thanks again for your collaboration and time.

      +Dr Abd You can You can use hydraulic magnetic cut offs with this kit they sell it as a add on. The Lekkie ring needs no adapter bolts right on to the BBS02. I have the race face 42 and the BCD 110 adapter. The lekkie is better it offsets back to the frame the raceface does not. 9 and 10 gear cassettes will have alignment issues on the low end might have trouble with first and second.

      Cobain Windsurfer still alive and rolling. a few things happen tho. the original frame cracked at the chain stay. right where the drain hole was. not sure what caused it but possibly the change in the rear rotors size. it moved the pivot point right where the drain hole was.

      Great news! I am getting my BBSHD in about a week, installing it on my old MTB. I also got the 42T. I would like to have a dual front chainring for the BBSHD, for the bigger for commuting and small one for steep trails in the mountains. Do you think it is possible to to use two leekie rings and put them togeather to a dual front chainring using 5mm spacers and longer screws??

    • @TTarlov
      @TTarlov  7 років тому

      Cobain Windsurfer it's a great idea. I did think about doing the dual ring. but honestly you are much better off just getting a 10 speed cassette in the back. my current mountain bike (non ebike) has one small ring in the front and 10 rings in the back.

    My bafang build is 1000watt Luna hot rod with a Luna Eclipse 40 tooth one piece chainring and 48 volt battery.the rear is 16 tooth shimano Alfine 8,included with a gear sensor.A gear sensor is a must guys/ladies.I’m an impatient guy and shifting is not my best. With out the sensor it sounded like was making pop corn from hub .Shifting is smooth and quicker than hot butter of a knife.You do have slack off momentarily on the peddle when shifting but only by seconds. I’m not a big guy and weigh in at about 148 lbs my top speed is about 55 km.If I want to peddle and save battery I’ll stay in 8 great.I’ll get assistance from the motor but not as much if I drop down 5 or 6 gear and it moves out and fast.At stop lights I can be in the middle of an intersection before traffic has moved.
    I fallowed Luna’s suggestions as close as I could buy the available parts and couldn’t be happier for my build.Good luck and ride safe. Ware a helmet.

      That would be your issue. It's recommended to degrease, or at least wipe off the chain every 100 miles or after the bike gets mud or dirt on it. Then relube the chain. The chain could outlast the bike this way and cause the rings, cogs and derailleur to last many more years than never maintaining at all.

    Just finished a carrera hellcat lmt edition 29er 750w bafang build, First build, Only problem i had was getting bottom bracket off, Defo enjoyed fitting it, The sense af achievent when you step back an admire your work, I suffer CPTSD, an it give me a tiny little mental boost not giving up an getting it done, Felt like when i finished producing a bad ass beat, Or winning a super hard sim race, Addicted to ACC an my sim rig, Yeah finished soldiering the xt60 connectors last night, Wakes up thinking yeah man go out forva blip on my new hellcat on a sunday afternoon, An its pissing it down, Typical UK weather i guess, lol...
    The UK is well behind on Personal Electric Transport its embarassing, Electric scooters get taken off you, Yet the Tories wants COP or what ever promotional stunt they doing, Care about climate but not make electric scooters legal for private ownership, Its why i done a bafang build, Im afraid my electric monster scooter will get taken off me, But after realising i can use all the gears on the back of a bike, I had to get a bafang, Hub motors are a no no, Ask Johnny nerdout, lol, Yeah i wish the UK was more up to sctratch on PEV'S, We might not have petrol problems if more people used PEV'S...

      Hell Yeah man. I just did my Super Fly 100 Carbon frame bottom bracket for a bafang motor, and I was shitting bricks while I was getting it to fit decently. Still finishing the build, but I've taken it for a few rides. Waiting on a BlingRing to fix my chainline issue.

      Still tho I miss the bike I feel more assured on my bike, Still tho happy riding bro, I would wear a helmet too another bit of key advice, Helmets will end up saving your skull.......

    So, did you make a video about the breaks? I just ordered a bafang kit and my current bike has hydraulic discbreaks and I don't know if I can keep them because the kit has some other breaklevers with sensors to cut the motor when breaking. So I don't know now if I have to downgrade the whole breaksystem. What about your breaks?

    • @snowscum
      @snowscum 7 років тому

      I have hydraulics on mine and I bought the shimano hydraulic brakes with the motor cut offs from luna. I had to get a shop to lengthen to get them installed but they work really well.Make sure if they come with an extra pig tail on them to use the pig tails because Shimano had a batch they wired backwards and they need that pigtail on in order for them to work.

    • @Ghostmeat17
      @Ghostmeat17 3 роки тому

      IMO the brake sensors are kinda silly, unless you brake a lot while peddling, which is also kinda silly. There is about a 3 second delay after letting off the brake for the motor to start again. i find this annoying.

    • @TTarlov
      @TTarlov  2 роки тому

      Ok there is a bit of a disconnect here. The motor drives the rear wheel via the chain. So yes you can use the throttle but it won't drive the rear wheel. It's a mid drive configuration meaning the motor is in the crank and not inside the rear wheel hub. If this was a hub drive you could ride it just on throttle with a broken chain.
      So to answer your original question now understanding what you actually meant, no you can not use the throttle if the chain is broken to ride the bike home.

Feels like the rear end wants to overtake you lol. No issues with the chain snapping with the standard 46tooth chain ring. Would recommend this upgrade to anyone.

    I see a lot of reviews on this kit...peeps having 100 miles, 200 miles. That is less than a months worth of riding for me. Are there any out there, road or trail, commuter or casual rider that have achieved 1,000 miles or more? I'm asking because I figured I would take a $1,000. chance on the 750 + a good battery. I finished the install tonight. Tomorrow after the battery charges, I will maiden it. Right now, I have it on my old Schwinn Third Ave....an inexpensive Walmart hybrid bike. If this proves out, I wish to put it on my Trek Excaliber 9. BUT, I'm not going to modify the Trek with something that will last maybe 500 miles. I did get the Bling Ring. The std. 46t chainring and cheap plastic guard is shit.

      Paweł Rup true. I ended up getting a regular mountain bike. mostly because I wanted a more capable bike with larger wheels/tires. Also I wanted to get more exercise. However my wife rode this bike up untill we got her a full suspension Haibike a few months ago. If I were to do this again I would stick with a hardtail bike with either 27.5 wheels or 650b wheels and 3" tires. 26" tires are just too small for single track riding. They are fine for light trails and communting but not for serious mountain biking. Another issue was finding a frame with a skinny enough button bracket. At the time when I bought the kit it only worked with older bikes that had skinnier button brackets. Now Bafang makes systems that work even with fat tire bikes that have super wide buttom brackets.

    I can't believe my ears. Everybody says lakkie works better than the original chainring. I used the original chainring with a 8 speed cassette and I was able to exploit the whole range. Sometimes I had drop of chain when I shifter between the 1th and the second cog (the lowest and the second lowest). I bought lekkie to improve the chainline (42t) and now when I use the lowest and the second lowest speed due to the very wide teeth the chain climbs the chainring teeth and drops off internally despite of the better chainline. With lekkie I only can use 6 of the 8 speed. The original chainring works much better

    • @silverice9

      Depends on your fit to the bottom bracket (which bottom bracket and which mm bafang kit you have). I have a BB95 bottom bracket, so I had to buy the 100mm bafang kit, and the chainline is completely unusable on all but the two highest gears. Lekkie is a good fit to fix that issue if you have it, otherwise it either isn't necessary, or is just for more torque (less top speed)

      Kendall Lyons I have to give credit where its due:-). I have to say that $100 in this case is "totally worth it". With 10-15% grade inclines it is not easy on a motor with a large chain ring. This one makes a pretty damn big difference.

    • @lunarme9831
      @lunarme9831 9 років тому

      T Alexandrovich I also agree, Great chainring. One big thing that has just happened to mine is after one minute riding on a wet/muddy gravel road my rear tyre spat a tiny pebble between the inside of the ring and the plastic gear cover that houses the small cog, which made a noise like a cars brake disc catching a stone. It did make the ring a wee bit oval only by .25mm but then it started rubbing on the plastic cover. The fix was to sand the inside of ring, remove the blue. and I used knead it to make a small ramp to guide all dirt down the side gap.I Will post a short video soon of fix as it's hard to explain fully.
