Good argument for keeping "Original Bunjie" as your primary weapon. I recently upgraded to a faster bow and it comes with quite a few downsides. Practice involves pulling arrows out of a Target that are very deep. Pain in the ass to crank that thing back with out a winch. Thanks again for the video. 😎👍
Rich. Totally agree. I had a shot last fall at a nice 8 point. 41 yards on the range finder. But just couldn't do it. That's a long way in the woods. Many vertical bow hunters are afraid the crossbow will "kill or wound" the deer populace. The mantra that crossbows are a supercharged bow that can fire arrows like winged rifle bullets. What we don't understand, we always fear. Keep up the good info and educate the masses!!
+Wayne Patton you summed it up nicely and I have been there, seen that nice deer and wanted to shoot at it but just not having that deer in range. Always a good idea to wait for that right moment. That's what I love about this stuff. Thanks for watching and good luck!
One of the main reasons I hunt with a crossbow is the fact that if I shoot a deer, the sound won't scare everything in a 5 mile radius away. And, if I'm not tagged out. I have a good possibility of getting another shot on another deer. Plus I just love a crossbow in general. ❤
i know this video was made in 2017,but to address you remark about there not being any archery equipment that shoots flat.I recently picked up excaliburs new micro axe 340 kryptec raid camo , as per usual with excalibur the fps was a lot higher than 340 and the scope was hitting an orange size group out to 30 yard on the 410 fps setting. The next day i went turkey hunting and harvested a beautiful 17 pound red head jake ,the bolt ,witch is an excalibur ,black eagle quil.....went through that bird and travelled 100 yard at one foot off the ground before it dropped.I would say that is a pretty flat trajectory.Great day in the woods it was .......love your videos dude .....i named my crossbow luca after my last dog ,,,,she loved chasing turkeys .Keep on rockin in the free world brother
+Locks Bog yes, I agree, gravity is not your friend LOL. I should add that to the list of things that aren't our friends when we are crossbow hunting haha. Thanks for watching! And very good point about the rangefinders, you can't get out of knowing the right distance.
I like your video I have the chronicle crossword 185 lb draw weight is very good for the money but I put a 3/9 rifle scope on mine and I can hit my long ring but hard to get along range in West Virginia
Another great overview Rich! I have been shooting a Hoyt Bow with 65lbs draw for the last 15 years - I have 3 pins on my bow sight 20, 30 and 40 is as far as I did shoot my bow.... This is my first year with my Scorpyd Death Stalker (AWESOME CBow!).... I assumed before I actually started shooting my new CBow w 150lbs draw that I would probably now have range out to more like 50 and probably 60!? I have shot my Scorpyd DS about 200x now - and am comfortable out to that same 40 and even though my Vortex scope has range lines out further - I just don't see me shooting further than 40 this season. Shooting from a tree stand - most of the time without any kind of rest 40 is going to be it.
I do practice out to 50 Yrds only reason why is so if I'm hunting fields I can know I can take that shot, other than that I dont shoot over 40 yrds. I shoot a carbon express x-force black blade. Very accurate crossbow.
i once shot a black bear at an honest 100 yards, with a compound bow. first shot was a foot low, and hit the dirt [ broadside shot ]. bear ducked into the bush, reappeared a minute later. second shot was on the money [ heart/lung ], and he only went about 30 yards. finished him with my knife. i now have a scoped crossbow. if i shoot and miss, ok. but, i've had many lucky shots. if you don't shoot, you don't get
Well said rich I agree 20yd to 30yd is the only shot I would take at any animal I was shooting at the closer better kill you will get by far I would never shot a target even at 50yd to 60yds I can barely see the target that far anyway loved the vid big guy and cheers and good luck with hunting this fall God bless you be safe now
Great advice, Rich. I have several friends with crossbows and I have to scold them about shots beyond 50 yards. My friend missed a doe on two consecutive afternoons because he guessed wrong at the range, guessing one much farther than it was and one much closer than it was. A co-worker was trying to tell me that since his crossbow was accurate to 100 yards, he could take shots that far. And he is a degreed engineer! Please folks, limit your shots to under 50 yards. You need not only accuracy but also energy (ft. lbs.) to get enough penetration to humanely kill at long range. Chronograph your shots and do the math.
That calculator is not as if "shooting in a vacuum".... The math has it shooting in air with no wind. If it were a vacuum, it would stay at 305 fps over infinite distance.
@@Deathbybunjie yes gravity makes it drop. But it's the resistance in air that slows it down. In a vacuum it would still drop due to gravity, but keep same velocity.
I like that Best Crossbow Source , I love this segment and another thing with drop at farther distances you could also hit a branch with the ark.Yes in reality the shots are between 10 and 25
+1digitalwatcher a very good point. If there are branches between you and 20 yards, there are a lot more between you and 40 yards. And that Arc is really something to take into consideration. You can't shoot down a tunnel. It shoots over the tunnel and lands on the other end kind of. Very good point. Thanks!
I agree my tenpoint can shoot accurately out to 60 yards but I feel the challenge of hunting with a crossbow is getting deer in close like 30 yards maximum. I say all the time anyone can harvest a deer at 100 yards where they can't see you but it takes real talent to get them in close and get the shot. Another great video Rich
With all due respect, I think it’s time you upgrade your crossbow, you would be surprised at the newer crossbows shooting faster , you can shoot a heavier bolt , I shoot a 430 grain bolt and broad head combo , I get 2-3” groups at 60 yards , I would be comfortable shooting a deer up to 60 yards , I’ve shot several at 40 yards including an 8 pt with complete pass throughs no problem, I think you’re to in love with your crossbow and it’s holding you back , let it go and upgrade , much respect and appreciate your videos
I appreciate your input and the respectful way you commented here. You make the Internet a better place. Some people send me the same message but in a much poorer way lol. I get what you're saying and the day will come when I upgrade. Keep watching lol.
Hey boss all your videos are great and you make a lot of sense and what you're saying people seem to forget then a compound bow or a crossbow are close range weapons that's what they are designed to do shoot close range like you say if you want to shoot a hundred yards at a deer buy a gun that's why they make scent Lok suits sprays sense to put down on the ground to get the closer shot that's why they make all that stuff because like you say the closer the deer is to you I feel I have outwitted and I have outsmarted that deer so I feel like I have accomplished more the closer the deer is to me when I take the shot
+Don Wilson right on, all good points! My grandfather shot lots of deer while smoking cigarettes...but with a rifle! Thanks for the points and thanks for watching!
I nailed 150 yards with my crossbow. I wouldn't hunt at that distance though obviously cause I could lose the animal if it doesn't go down quickly, or the higher chance of missing entirely.
Agree and disagree. I shoot/practice with all of my bows at double or triple my comfy hunting shots. Not because I'll shoot an animal at 90yards, but because it's a confidence and skill booster. If I can hit a target at 90, 30yards is easy. Also, form (as you mentioned) inconsistencies show up at longer ranges. Shows you what's happening so you can fix it. All in all, a target from a store won't move in a second. Animals can and have. I'm not risking that on anything living.
great info as usual. the report probably meant that at 69 yards most crossbows have enough kenetic energy to effectively kill a deer but as you said, getting it to the deer in the kill zone is a different story at that yardage. to many other variables can come into play. Deer jumping the string, wind, the list goes on. 30 to 40 yards max for me with my 400 fps crossbow.
+Ron Garofalo that sounds like a great plan. That could very well be what they meant in that report. Someday I would like to get a copy of it. Thanks again for watching!
Excellent points Rich. I hunt public property regularly. If a shot is taken at say 50 yards, No way can i see small branches or other pieces of vegitation at that range......doesnt't take much to divert an arrow at all. This scenario could end badly for someone walking near your target. Anything past 30 is simply a bad shot.
Wasn't using a rest and missed a buck low with a ten point at 30 yards, luckily a clean miss under the belly so the deer wasn't wounded. That experience sure made an impression on me. I'd rather pass on any deer than take a risky shot or a shot that I'm not fully confident in. Last week I bought a Ravin R9. Was shooting good groups at 90 yards... but even at 390 fps the drop at those distances is approx 8 inches per 10 yards. Huge opportunity for miscalculation. Bottom line, I'm probably ok at 30 yards but beyond that, I simply don't feel confortable with the consequences of anything less than a near perfect shot. Agree, close is best!!!
+160 Acres in Hocking Hills - Our Odyssey that's really interesting to hear and it's something that I don't think I can point out enough. As you put it, a "huge opportunity for miscalculation." That sums it up nicely, better than I can put it. It's not just that the crossbow might be inaccurate but also the fact that we can misjudge the distance and if you're off by five yards that's four inches or more, and that's the difference between killing and wounding most of the time. There's just more to go wrong at long distances. Those Ravens are really nice crossbows though! Good luck with that and keep me posted!
Any shot with any type of string weapon over long distance is crazy, I have a compound bow I never taken a shot over 30 yard I feel it much safer, and a smarter shot when you keep the distance in check.
Great vid! And the last minute was great. Crossbow hunting is still subsonic and archery. I have learned to limit my shots to 30 yds or less. I took a shot at a doe at 45 yds and she "jumped the string" bad and I missed her clean (fortunately). That taught me to set up for archery style 20 to 30 yd shots.
Hi Rich, I hope you had a great summer, hope you have a great season. I regularly practice with my Barnett out to 50 yards, and that far out, it still groups well, hits to poa, and buries an impressive amount of shaft in a dense foam target, so depending on the wind, I might shoot at one that far out, but like you I would prefer to keep it within 40 yards. love the videos as always. Hope you add one to the PA. record books this year :-)
+Joe Baker thanks for the kind words and the comment. I hope you have great success this season, too! There's no question that the kinetic energy is there to do the job at 50 yards, but make sure those shots are clear of branches and all the other good stuff. And you are right, wind is not your friend LOL. Good luck!
When I first got my Tenpoint I shot it out to 100 with field points just to see what would happen. The crossbow is very accurate but you better be hunting in an open pasture if you plan on taking shots like that because you need plenty of airspace. I just don't see any need in it. It is so much more of a rush to be close enough to a deer to hear them breath. I think it also shows more skills as a hunter to see how close you can get without being detected. I practice out to 60 yards because it makes my kill shots (40 and under) easier.
+Jackie Newman that is perfection, Jackie! Everything you said there is something to live by. We are not shooting arrows so much as we are lobbing them.
I wont shoot over 40 again, shot 45 yards with ten point last weekend and deer ducked the arrow, blood on arrow tracked for 800 yards, must have nicked him
Ravin R15 is a game changer for me. Prior to that the longes I shot was an 8 Point buck at 45 yards with my Ten Point. This week I shot a doe at 86 yards with the R15. Arrow went in front shoulder and out rear quarter. Doe went 25 yards and piled up. Used a steady Eddy on the bow. Clear shot with nothing in between.
Death by Bunjie I had practiced out to 80 yards and would not have attempted if I was not confident with a good shot. The 2nd doe I shot (Forest County, PA) this past week was only 20 yards. Thanks for all the info in your videos. I’ve learned so much from you and have improved so many aspects of my hunting regime.
+Adam Bodford there probably is a certain distance where it doesn't make any difference anymore because they can no longer hear it but generally speaking I think it makes a big difference a longer your shot is. Good luck out there!
This was a great video on the speed and distance.. allot people don't under stand the wind plays a huge factor in longer shot with any bow or crossbow also.. the average Hunter will shoot 20 30 yards and be affected lightly by wind but 40 50 things change allot .. my personal range 14 18 yards it's just a done deal.. seems like the magic number for me.. after that allot can happen.. I've bow hunted since 1986 just the last two years I've used crossbows. This year my Excalibur about knock me out .. my limb hit a heavy branch I shot 5 ft over my doe believe it or not I cocked the bow and pulled it off I did get a second shot.. got the doe.. but I'm not comfortable using the Wide limb Excalibur crossbow up a tree now.. so I'm going with a Ten Point crossbow for next season.. It shoots just as good .. but I wanted to jump in say I enjoy all your videos I did subscribe still waiting to be added.. ?????? Have you ever had Same issues with limb interfaces ?? I loved my Excalibur but that just did it for me .. plus I wanted to go with a little less weight..
+Jeff Datres yeah you have to be careful with those wide limbs. I have not had a problem personally but I know what you mean. I plan out all my shots and shooting areas ahead of time. If you click the Subscribe button, that is all you need to do. Go to your subscriptions on your UA-cam channel page and make sure death by bunjie appears there. Then when you check your subscription feed my new videos will automatically be there. Thanks and thanks for watching! Good luck!
+Wonderful World of Whitetails it sure will differ from one crossbow to another but the fact remains that we're better off with shorter shots. And that's the fun part! Thanks for watching!
Wonderful World of Whitetails I ABSOLUTETLY disagree with that chart. Im about 330fps, using 415 gr bolts.(I got heavier ones4 this season- bout 500). BUT- 'They' say 20 yds- no drop, 30 yds 4" drop, 40 yds, 11" drop! Now, how u can tell- shoot a 30, using your 20 yd pin! Should drop about 4-5! (I did it by accident, so i learned!). Or visa- versa. Shoot a 20 using your 40 yd pin! AIM LOW THOUGH! I have a Hawke, synced to 100 yds, works Perfectly; but, when i got out to 80yds practicing, my 19X19 target looked like a DOT! + now im hitting a dot with a dot! I hit the target, but within an inch of missing it!
oh and I forgot to mention I have a range finder mounted on top of my scope of my Excalibur I use as the animal approaches to give me the actual range so im not guessing .
Rich Nice job as always very thorough and well explained! One can see how you use your law firm and courtroom training to make your case. Most archers should stick with a max range of 20-25 yards with a compound bow and 30-35 with an accurate crossbow. Beyond those distances one should use a rifle! 🎯
+Ron Lanzo I agree there, I've shot deer everywhere from 20 to 150 yards with the rifle. I'm aware most people shoot farther with a rifle. I must be kind of a wimp when it comes to distances LOL.
Thank you brother.. I do have you on my UA-cam list wasn't sure if I did it rite I'm not to good on the net stuff lol. But you was 100% your there and wow you got ton videos.. I'm going to be checking them out. But back to the bow speed tread I never was a big fan of speed I've shot whitetail with 210fps bear bows back in the day.. when bows sounded like a 22 rifle going off with that clanging sound and the tree climbers sounded like you was sanding the bark off a tree with a sheet of plywood as you climbed up lol. But we got it done haha.. today's bows and stands are so much safer and better I don't honestly think you can go wrong with this newer technology plus the technology in the material that they use to make them are unbelievably strong.. I was not going to stop using my Excalibur vortex but that deal with the tree limb got to me in the worst way I did have my safety harness on but almost falling over the side my stand and the crossbow limb just missing the side of my head did me in.. the big main reason I went to Excalibur was they are the best shooting crossbows I've ever shot and the fast string change in the field was nice. But the down side is they got them wide limbs and are heavy.. the safety always bugged me to I like the anti dry fire set ups.. "" they did come out with that this year the new assassin by Excalibur but the price is out of my budget 110% but I'd bet it's one Heck of a crossbow. But thanks for replying back to me.. and look foreword to more of your videos..
Ok using the chart you used here . The chart shows my bow has 118 pounds of ke at point blank range and 99 pounds of ke at 70 . The guide in field and stream and a few other sites say that 25 pounds of ke is all that is needed to successfully hunt deer sized game. So I get where this web site got it's info from maybe. Not that I would take shoots at any game with my bow at 70 yards it looks like I still has more then enough power to do so.
+John Hastings yes that will open a broad head at any range I would expect. Whether you can accurately hit your target is a whole different question LOL. Good luck out there and thanks for watching!
Well, if you train enough is posible without going too risky, Tim wells has shot animals with his bow with ⅓ of the poundage of an average crossbow at 100 yards or more, no sights just instinctive shooting. Took a deer like a 50 yards away, a baboon like -/+100 yards away so it's possible ( agree with the high rate of risk ) so I think that with a good scope and a few hrs of practice a 100 yards shot is posible and effective. There is a video of a guy who shot a goose a 100 yards away with a judo point and broke the neck of the bird
First I'm Kristi's father, not Kristi, but I really stink at puters so I'm not going to mess with settings. LOL, long shots that I'm used to thinking of start at about 300yds on out to 500+yds. But that is with a custom 220 Swift with a 5-25X Zeiss scope on it. I shoot a Scorpyd RDT crossbow @ 425fps. Scope is a Vortex Viper XBR 2.5-10X44 which is the best crossbow optic I've found to date. This scope provides me with 11 aim points, which is one of it's best features. I can and do practice out to 80yds with this set up & have, (with VERY precisely matched bolts) high confidence in both my crossbow set up & my skills @ these distances. Though I've gone down a road you disagree with I've yet to ever that a shot on game beyond 34yds. I also disagree with that chart shown, perhaps this is due to it's being a old set of stats. I do urge you to study the ballistic coefficient of really precision made bolts. Made with a careful eye to detail, arrows/bolts of high ballistic coefficient can give a measurable difference in how flat a trajectory you have when you shoot. Use of best quality carbon shafts, airfoil type fetching, low drag expandable broad heads together can & do reduce rate of drop. I really do like your videos, very well filmed & your explanations are detailed well to help anyone understand what you are explaining in your videos.
oh quit your whining about this. the scope is the one that makes up this distance compensation . if u cannot do it fine. stay at 10 and 20 yards. I can kill deer at 50 in a open field with nothing to hit like limbs etc. now in the bush your theory would probably hold a lot of logic and truth to it. but in a open scenario as long as the equipment is set up to do the shot holding steady is the way to compensate.
I laugh allot about that .. I sit and think back to times I'd be up a tree 20 ft and hear another Hunter climbing a tree 150 yards away .. couldn't help to think I bet he is using a Warren sweat like mine lol ..
Hi from England. (I know bow hunting is illegal, but shooting isnt. Its similar skills) Just because you could take a long shot, doesnt mean to say you should... After all, you dont have to kill that animal at 70 yards to eat, you wont starve if it runs away whilst you are stalking it. So now we are down to ethics and field craft. For me. A major part of the hunt is field craft. How close can you stalk to that animal. Im not a fan of hiding up in trees or static hides, like you Americans hunt, it seems unsporting. The other part is accuracy, Shoot at a distance you can hit a 1 inch circle, everytime. like you said.. Distance adds time to impact, a lot can happen between pulling the trigger and impact. Closer the better, and we are back to field craft. Speaking of shot arc's ... Gravity and this planets thick atmosphere is not your friend.
I have a high country compound bow see if u would help me my can on my bow them bottom can is getting bad I got the number for it don't no who I tall to her is the number on the cam mxhL-4L
+Adam Bradley sorry but I sure can't help with that, I think you have to take it to a shop. Or if you are handy and want to fix it yourself you could look at eBay for used bow parts. Just a thought. I hope that helps, good luck!
I have a centerpoint sniper 370 with rage hypothermic needles and killed a deer at 80 ik people say don’t my son which is 12 really wanted to killed a deer last day of deer season so he shot blow through it and the deer 🦌 dropped at 20 yards A nice doe looks 5 or 6 years olds
Speed doesn’t kill deer! trajectory doesn’t kill deer! Razor sharp cut on contact heads with heavier arrows penetrates heavy bone more devastating than a damn high powered rifle sometimes, just learn ur aim points , tbh if u want a challenge shoot a bow and not a crossbow, don’t be lazy 👍🏻
I understand your opinion and information from being a student of crossbow hunting is accurate but has one flaw. Every opinion and informative answer has an exception. The exception that you are not calculating is the shooter and a someone that takes great care in being accurate and studying every variable. I can make an accurate kill shot at 80 yards all day long. I have a made studies downrange noise of my Bolts. Speed is not the answer but power is the answer with extreme FOC and heavy weight bolts. If the hunter takes extreme care to drop the noise of his crossbow, shoot heavy extreme FOC bolts with quality broadheads, 80 to 100 yard shots are easy. Especially taking care of readying the quarries behavior patterns. Farther the shot, the less likely the quarry can estimate the direction of the noise and identity. this slight confusion will cause a hesitation on "the string jumping". she is not string jumping> All animals even humans crouch at suspicious noises so you can spring into action call flight or fight response. If we as hunters do not self analyze our sport to make it better and challenge ourselves: the long bow, recurve bow, the wheeled compound bow, the cam compound bow and the same for crossbows would have never been developed. This is true with firearms. The kill shots of todays snipers is because they pushed themselves and their equipment. Remember during the revolutionary war snipers shots were no more than 150 yards, look what we are doing at over I mile shots now. Yes, we must respect our quarry but at the same time push ourselves without causing bad shots. I have seen 100 yard ethical shots with compound bows on elk being very successful. I am not arguing with you> Your videos are awesome and informative to some hunters but some of us freaks that spends not hours but a lifetime on the details of our equipment and pushing ourselves. Please, do not forget us. you are one us {freak to details} your attention to detail is setting up the land, food source and terrain to make that close in shot. I was told a long time ago; do not be afraid of thegun you are encountering but the shooter. An average shooter in any sport can only make average shots with average equipment but a great shooter with average equipment can make great shots.
John Dunbar why don’t you share a photo of how you look? This guy is really not that big, he probably lives a healthier lifestyle than you, and most importantly he isn’t a complete jackass. Seriously, how miserable are you to just insult someone for no reason, he is providing useful information to people, he is more valuable than you are. You should probably fix whatever is making you so insecure and depressed before judging other people.
At close range your bolt is lower than your sights because the scope is above the arrow. That isn't drop. That is the parallel plane between your sights and your bolt. At 20 yards and further your arrow goes above the scope's plane of view and then eventually comes back down below the scope's plane. I get where you are going and I don't think shots over 50 yards would be ethical, however if you have practiced at 70 and you know exactly where its going to hit, it doesn't matter what the website says your drop is, because it doesn't figure in the difference between the bolt and the scope being 1.5 - 2" of distance. With a compound bow I have taken 40 yard shots with success. I practice out to 50 with my compound bow.
There are several unethical youtube videos of people (I won’t call them hunters) shooting animals at 70+ yards. What’s worse is those videos have many commenters who congratulate and also state they shoot animals at 50+ yards. To many things can go wrong and cause an animal to needlessly suffer. The wind magnifies the error or an animal could just take a step forward. Besides, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of hunting with a crossbow? Shame.
Speed will not fix the problem because of newtons "law".... a object in motion falls at the same speed of an fall object at rest. It doesn't matter the size of the bullet, if you drop a bullet it will hit the ground at the same time as if you fired it being the same weight.
You zero at 20 yards bud... so 30 and 40 is not as much drop as that chart. That chart is the total drop from the time it leaves the barrel over distance, not your hold overs at those given ranges.
Death by Bunjie correct it is def no where near a firearm. Even though it is easy to account for hold over at longer ranges at known distance with a stationary target with a cross bow, you should never take those kind of shots on game. I feel very comfortable with my xbow at 50 yards max in a perfect scenario i.e broadside, head down, relaxed in a field eating, but the closer the better I agree with %100
Great video bro . Look up sniper 101 here on UA-cam. He goes real in-depth on ballistics. Once you have a good understanding of ballistics you can apply that to your crossbow .
We enjoy a long extended archery season with plenty of chances to wait for nothing but good close broadside shots. If you don't get a good close shot the first day it gives you an excuse to get out and enjoy more time in the woods. If you aren't getting opportunities for close broadside shots inside 30 yards you are doing something wrong. Longer riskier shots are not the answer.
I look forward to every episode. It's always time well spent. I have learned a heck of a lot here on your channel. I put up a tree stand today and cleared shooting lanes for it. I'll be putting up climbing sticks and clearing lanes for another stand tomorrow. Been shooting the crossbow the last few days. Been making room in the freezer. 37 days until the opener. I'll be ready.
You are so right Rich!!!! Great information and I Sure agree now way is that Article back in the 80s correct! The crossbow equipment has improved since then but not all That much on speed. The equipment today shoots better do to better manufacturing processes. At 275 fps vs 400 truth be told is not such a leap that hunters could even think today to take a shot at 60 yards. Now if some crossbow that shoots 1000 fps then we will have to rethink the killing distance. Maybe that kind of crossbow will come with that flying car we all talked about? Lol Your UA-cam channel is great!! It's not about the big buck, how far you can shoot or how fast your crossbow is! It's about getting out an enjoying the time you have with nature. Great job thanks Rich!!
Crossbow accuracy also changes with time. My Middleton DTM370 (370FPS) shot 4inch groups at 60yrds with broadheads when new. Now it shoots that at 40 yrds. Point being you should keep your shots close and practice.
I have tried many things. None have resulted in that great consistency. The bow is now much slower (340 fos). I have since bought a backuo bow which is slower but quieter ,more accurate and much easier to draw (133 lbs vs. 250lbs).
Just found this channel. Thus far I'm enjoying the content and great info. Used q quad 400 for over 10 yards and need to replace it
Good argument for keeping "Original Bunjie" as your primary weapon.
Nice shirt! Saw them in Pittsburgh PA back in like 2019
I'm a fan of the Maiden shirt!!
Lol thanks!
i know this video was made in 2017,but to address you remark about there not being any archery equipment that shoots flat.I recently picked up excaliburs new micro axe 340 kryptec raid camo , as per usual with excalibur the fps was a lot higher than 340 and the scope was hitting an orange size group out to 30 yard on the 410 fps setting.
Bottom line is gravity is a bitch!!! You must know your exact yardage especially beyond 20 yes....... great vid & info Rich, keep them coming!👍🦌
Thanks for your video. Absolutely spot on.
40's a good limit in my book, too, sounds good to me!
I do practice out to 50 Yrds only reason why is so if I'm hunting fields I can know I can take that shot, other than that I dont shoot over 40 yrds. I shoot a carbon express x-force black blade. Very accurate crossbow.
Not a bad plan and yes, those fields are where you get those long shots, good luck and thanks for watching!
i once shot a black bear at an honest 100 yards, with a compound bow. first shot was a foot low, and hit the dirt [ broadside shot ]. bear ducked into the bush, reappeared a minute later. second shot was on the money [ heart/lung ], and he only went about 30 yards. finished him with my knife. i now have a scoped crossbow. if i shoot and miss, ok. but, i've had many lucky shots. if you don't shoot, you don't get
What the power stoke ?? Thks
Basically that's the distance the string travels after you pull the trigger
Thks
Well said rich I agree 20yd to 30yd is the only shot I would take at any animal I was shooting at the closer better kill you will get by far I would never shot a target even at 50yd to 60yds I can barely see the target that far anyway loved the vid big guy and cheers and good luck with hunting this fall God bless you be safe now
+Chuck Nadeau ditto. When I shoot at the target from 50 yards it just seems so far away! Thanks for watching and good luck to you too!
If its past 35 40 yards, it lives another day with me..
Very nice video!! Very well explained!!
+Terry Stotzheim well thanks and thanks for watching!
Thumbs up for sure!
That calculator is not as if "shooting in a vacuum".... The math has it shooting in air with no wind. If it were a vacuum, it would stay at 305 fps over infinite distance.
Except for gravity...
Thanks!
Totally correct in my experience , great info and video.
+cajunski1 glad to hear it, thanks and thanks for watching!
+Blake Davis thank you very much, you hit the nail right on the head! That is where the skill lies and where the fun is. Good luck out there!
My longest shot for a deer is 40 yards. The tenpoint steady-eddy mono pod helps me shoot more accurate out to 40 yards. Great video Thanks
+Tom G. I'm not familiar with that monopod but I will check it out that's pretty cool
Very good info it explains a lot
+Michael Lee I got to agree on that and I thank you for watching the video! Good luck out there!
Rich, thanks and will be sure to let you know how things go in Ohio this year!!! Im sure you'll do the same!
I wont shoot over 40 again, shot 45 yards with ten point last weekend and deer ducked the arrow, blood on arrow tracked for 800 yards, must have nicked him
well said my friend!!! WHERE HAVE I BEEN LOVE YOUR CHANNEL
Glad to hear you like this stuff, I look forward to lots of conversations
Like to shoot for my crossbow between 20to25yards at a deer I have set between them yardage
+Connie Turner nothing wrong with that, that's a great plan!
+Thomas Weaver that is amazing, technology is really something!
I never really thought about the noise issue playing into ranged shots like that before.
Good luck!
Thanks for the video. Can't wait for deer season in California...
+Alex Herman can't wait for it here on the East Coast either! Thanks, thanks for watching, and good luck!
Well done. I differ with some of those drop figures.
Thanks for the video just bought a crossbow and plan to hunt with it this season, need all the info I can get
+Vincent Marcasol I've got lots of other videos on here, I hope they help. Thanks for watching! And good luck!
oh and I forgot to mention I have a range finder mounted on top of my scope of my Excalibur I use as the animal approaches to give me the actual range so im not guessing .
Good luck out there
Can u fine out something for me like to no about a jackal crossbow is it good crossbow
+Adam Bradley is that from Barnet? They make good stuff. I have not shot one but I wouldn't hesitate to try one out!
I really like mine it shoot really good it shoot 315 fps
It is 150lb pullback
My opinion 60 yards is maximum for a crossbow that is rated around 400fps
Rich
Nice job as always very thorough and well explained!
I shoot a 20inch arrows with mine I wouldn't shoot over 30yards I like to shoot between 20 to 25 and 30
+Adam Bradley that is a recipe for success!
I am very confident up to 45 yards.
+Captaraknospider confidence is a big thing, too. Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching and good luck!
+Jeff Datres I laughed out loud about your plywood reference haha
looks like you got quite a bit of cant in the scope mount just to shoot 30 or 40 yards.
Going to check out the arrow ballistic but need to get me a gram scale fist . I like your videos
Hello 👋 from North Carolina love all your shows looking to get a crossbow that’s how I found your show thinking about an assassin
You're being a Debbie downer. I'm about to snipe one at 100 yards like a boss
Doubtful
Well, if you train enough is posible without going too risky, Tim wells has shot animals with his bow with ⅓ of the poundage of an average crossbow at 100 yards or more, no sights just instinctive shooting. Took a deer like a 50 yards away, a baboon like -/+100 yards away so it's possible ( agree with the high rate of risk ) so I think that with a good scope and a few hrs of practice a 100 yards shot is posible and effective. There is a video of a guy who shot a goose a 100 yards away with a judo point and broke the neck of the bird
+Aleksi Varcast I love Tim wells, I've seen those shots...I'm no tim wells lol
Its similar skills)
Just because you could take a long shot, doesnt mean to say you should...
Thank u god bless
I have a centerpoint sniper 370 with rage hypothermic needles and killed a deer at 80 ik people say don’t my son which is 12 really wanted to killed a deer last day of deer season so he shot blow through it and the deer 🦌 dropped at 20 yards A nice doe looks 5 or 6 years olds
Congratulations that's awesome and thanks for watching
me thinks the lawyer is coming out in this video
+Capt. Shaffer I didn't sue anybody did I? LOL. Thanks for watching!
Want skill shoot a blowdart gun or a recurve.
Ahhh, fat jokes. I have arrived!
The wind really hurt 😞
Iron maiden....Hell Yeah
Shame.
To each his own
It's too much. Rifle is rifle. Bow is bow. Long shots mean animals suffering. Yes in close earns you the right to eat meat 😁
you are only at about 3 ft of hold over at 100 yards . Off a rest you are good on calm deer if you practice farther to 120 yards .
Speed will not fix the problem because of newtons "law".... a object in motion falls at the same speed of an fall object at rest. It doesn't matter the size of the bullet, if you drop a bullet it will hit the ground at the same time as if you fired it being the same weight.
yep we aren't going to escape gravity that's for sure.
i have never missed and i not only question you a can show you invest in a speed dial i can drive nails at 30 yards
You zero at 20 yards bud... so 30 and 40 is not as much drop as that chart. That chart is the total drop from the time it leaves the barrel over distance, not your hold overs at those given ranges.
Correct. And it's still a crazy drop over long distances.
Death by Bunjie correct it is def no where near a firearm. Even though it is easy to account for hold over at longer ranges at known distance with a stationary target with a cross bow, you should never take those kind of shots on game. I feel very comfortable with my xbow at 50 yards max in a perfect scenario i.e broadside, head down, relaxed in a field eating, but the closer the better I agree with %100
Yeah, too much can happen. Plus, half the fun is getting close!
Death by Bunjie it's not hard to get a 20 yard shot if you do a little scouting and spend time in the woods rather than indoors
Great video bro . Look up sniper 101 here on UA-cam. He goes real in-depth on ballistics. Once you have a good understanding of ballistics you can apply that to your crossbow .
I will check that out.
Longer riskier shots are not the answer.
sums it up nicely for me, thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
I'll be ready.
just love what you do i shoot out to 40 in early season the more in late season since you can see further and the deer a wiser
+Joe Gula it sure is a lot easier to see in the late season, and I agree the deer are a bit wiser! Thanks for watching and good luck out there!
You are so right Rich!!!!
Great information and I
Sure agree now way is that
Article back in the 80s correct!
The crossbow equipment has improved since then but not all
That much on speed. The equipment today shoots better do
to better manufacturing processes.
Lol
Your UA-cam channel is great!!
It's not about the big buck, how far you can shoot or how fast your crossbow is! It's about getting out an enjoying the time you have with nature. Great job thanks Rich!!
+Dan Vrana man you summed it up nicely! Thank you very much for the comment and thanks for watching! Good luck to you out there enjoying nature.
Crossbow accuracy also changes with time. My Middleton DTM370 (370FPS) shot 4inch groups at 60yrds with broadheads when new. Now it shoots that at 40 yrds. Point being you should keep your shots close and practice.
That's interesting, what accounts for the difference? Have you tighten all the bolts and whatnot?
I have tried many things. None have resulted in that great consistency. The bow is now much slower (340 fos). I have since bought a backuo bow which is slower but quieter ,more accurate and much easier to draw (133 lbs vs. 250lbs).
105 inches in drop just doesn't happen your wrong again i have video's of my bolt hitting kill area so just do it
shoot a crossbow that shoots 370 or better unless you hunt from a tree stand of which isn't really hunting bla bla bla bla
