I started using a tenpoint wicked ridge crossbow and it was a joy to shoot and shot very well. Tenpoint recommended changing the sting and cables every two years and or when it stretches and needs replaced. After I took the tenpoint to the bow shop I walked out paying $163.00 total for sting, cables and to be installed with a bow press and took 3 weeks to be ready for pick up. It was at this point I told myself I need a cheaper way to maintain my crossbow and need to be able to work on it myself. Long story short I sold my tenpoint crossbow with a new string on. With that money along with some saving I bought a Excalibur bulldog 380 suppressor. This was the best option for me for a lifetime crossbow that I only need to buy once and be able to fix everything I need to in the field. The bulldog is super accurate and figured it would have more then enough power to take down any size game when choosing a hunt for big game once I am able to. I hope this helps someone in the market for a crossbow and needed to know if Excalibur crossbows are the way to go... The answer is YES hands down!
Jubal Becker I totally agree with you and I was in the same boat a few months ago. I started out with the Barnett Recruit Terrain and then I thought I upgraded when I exchanged that for the whitetail pro str but boy was I wrong. The string/cables were consistently fraying to the point where they were snapping. My WTP STR had a 185lbs draw weight and I would not want to be there when the string snaps. I later got new strings and cable custom made by BPS and the problem went away but then the string stops broke off. I ended up having to shell out $100 installed. I decided to sell my Barnett WTP STR to some poor shmuck on eBay and I decided to get an Excalibur bulldog 440 and I couldn’t be happier after the change. Yes. It’s not as compact as the Barnett but it was faster and it came with a lifetime warranty and I could change the strings by myself. I almost took the whole riser apart to install the air brakes but that was a 6 out of 10, with 10 being the hardest install. I was able to change the strings within 2 mins. Now I have a bow that I can depend on even though my right limb has a tiny splinter in it and I’m not sure how it got on the limbs. I’m sure Excalibur will fix my problems without any problems because they are supposedly known for their customer service. If I was afraid of 185lbs blowing up in my face what do you think it’d be like if a bow that harnessed 300lbs in its limbs blows up in my face. The splinter is not bad but I just don’t want it to blow up in my face. Otherwise, I still love the Excalibur Bulldog 440. It’s one of the fastest bows out in the market and most reliable. Think of buying an Excalibur as an investment bc if you’re just buying bows bc they’re cheap and you end up having to replace it every year, you’re bound to waste a lot of money and still end up buying the Excalibur once you’re fed up with compound bows. That’s just my two cents...maybe 5 in this case but you know what I mean.
@@boots_4_me very great point I was tired of my compound Xbow it was bugging me that I couldn’t change anything myself that I had to pay someone to do things to it that I can do by myself so I ended up buying a Excalibur micro mag 340 td pro model all I’m waiting for is for it to arrive in the mail
Good vid. I like the way you don't think you have to have all the latest and greatest info and gear. Seriously. Get good equipment, learn how to utilize it perfectly, and you are set. Your advice is very real-life and down to earth unlike some others. Kudos.
A huge factor for me is that with my Ten Point Crossbow I have to pull the trigger with my right index finger and I have to depress a button with my left thumb to fire the crossbow. My crossbow can never be fired with my hand or fingers in the way of the bow string. This safety feature is a must for me when I consider owning a crossbow.
Picked up a top of the line Barnett, renevent 415 for just under 600$. The msrp was 1100$ last year. Full package and all. Shoots flat and deadly accurate. For anyone looking at buying a crossbow, check eBay for overstock and last year's models
+Tommy Podzielinski thanks for posting this. This is exactly what I was hoping would happen with this video. I appreciate your input and participation.
I really appreciate your statement about sticking with the crossbow you've got and not breaking the bank to up grade to the newest, greatest whiz bang rig on the market. And, the concept of sticking with your crossbow's manufacture's original and recommended equipment. I have been shooting an Inferno Wildfire since getting into crossbow hunting three years ago. Arrow Precision (Inferno) doesn't make the Wildfire anymore but I love this 225 pound, 330+fps recurve. Here in Oklahoma we can take six doe and two bucks in an archery (including crossbow) season that runs October 1 thru January 15.
+Ken Andrews that's a season the same length as here in Pennsylvania, pretty much, but very different bag limits. I wish you the best out there. Oklahoma is on my short list of places to visit someday!
Good point about the reticle. One thing i never thought about but really like, is my barnette ghost 420 crt 2x came with a 5x32 scope with red/green reticles & both colors have 10 different lighting settings. I thought that was dumb at first , but it makes good sense for hunters. I'm just not a hunter
My wife and I each have Excaliburs and are more than satisfied. Matrix 330 @220# and Matrix 380 @260# respectively. We have no problem cocking as well as uncocking them.
Hi. Nice to see a normal person on here. Just upgraded my Jaguar 150lb crossbow to an Excalibur GRZ2. Got the recommended bolts also. And I agree. If it aint broke, dont fix it. Its a pity we cant hunt in the UK with bows, but im having fun all the same. I hold a firearms / shotgun and explosives licence so plenty shooting experience, but just love shooting the crossbows. Keep up the good work. Take care. Ian.
Have shot many Crossbows, have owned only two.I purchased a Centerpoint Amped 415 and a high quality scope and I am EXTREMELY satisfied with the performance. She is a little heavy but is quiet and shoots a 505grain Arrow at 375fps. The best part was the Bow Case Arrows and upgraded Scope all less than 600$.I was wanting a very high end Bow,but when my old Bow cracked a limb I was in a pinch, and after lots of research went with CP. Very satisfied.
I really enjoy your down to earth advice instead of just pushing the latest and greatest. I started out with the same Excalibur axiom. I bought it used on craigs list for $400. It served me well and I was lucky enough to bag three 8 pointers with it over the years. Last season however I did make a change and bought an Excalibur micro 355. It was just getting a little tight in my climbing treestand with the axiom so I wanted something a little smaller. I love the Excalibur brand for the high quality and simplicity so I stuck with them. Unfortunately I got skunked this year so can't comment on how well it preformed. I may have pissed off the axiom gods and be cursed. Fingers crossed for next season.
+Scott C the Axion Gods will forgive you LOL. Good luck this year and that does sound like a nice crossbow. I think if I was going to upgrade that would be on the short list.
Hey Rich, had to comment on what a big help your videos have been. I have a shoulder injury which prevents me from shooting a compound bow anymore and decided to go with a crossbow. I didn't want to spend $2k to 3k on my first crossbow. Although I really like the Mission bows! Anyway, after months of research I pulled the trigger on a Centerpoint Sniper Elite 370 Whisper. I paid $275.00 for the package and have upgraded the scope to a Hawke Xb-1 SR IR. I am super happy with it and I am getting 1" groups at 40+ yards with Victory/Mission 22" arrows. I have started to fletch my own arrows and learning about arrow tuning. I try to shoot 50 arrows a day if my shoulder will handle it and I am having a blast! My significant other is not real happy with how much money I am spending on all my hunting gear, but.....OH WELL!! Won't be complaining when the freezer is full of venison I bet!! The only drawback here in Washington state, is that crossbow season for deer, elk, bear, and cougar are during the rifle season! But there are ways to get a special permit if you have a injury or a handicap. Fingers crossed! So, thanks so much for your wonderful videos and all the information that you provide your subscribers. Your professional, personable, and a wealth of knowledge. Appreciate you taking time to teach others. Oh, and by the way, her name is Mabel, after my grandmother. She was tough, no nonsense little firecracker who was always a straight shooter! Thats my Mabel! Good hunting!!
Great channel bro my name is Paul from Ontario. Love the channel , I shoot the Exonax 225 lb draw Excalibur crossbow, 350 fos with a 385 grain bolt. Works great. Love love love the channel. I know this is an older video but the info is still great. Thanks for all you do and the effort in the work on your channel. If you ever want to hunt in Ontario, please let me know and we will take you to the most awesome sites. Thank you for the best crossbow site on UA-cam. Paul AKA Cornbread!!
Nice to see a guy that shoots a recurve, basic equipment crossbow. Less moving parts to maintain and wear out. Simpler is better with less possibility of mechanical failures and take that advice from a mechanical engineer. I've watch many of your videos and liked them so much, I subscribed. Stick with Bungie she's nice and basic and get's the job done.
New subscriber here. Great channel! I just got into crossbow hunting. My first bow is a Killer Instinct Lethal 405 Compound. I put a Nikon Spur Reflex Sight on. The red dot is adjustable, so in low light scenarios I can turn down the intensity of the dot, and vice versa. I love this thing! Very accurate and relatively easy to cock. Thanks man!
Great vid as always. A couple of comments. I took an elk in Co with standard archery equipment, draw weight of 170 with arrow speed ~ 300 fps (10 yd shot). Bungie is more than adequate for that. Like you said "Placement is everything." Another thing, I missed (first time for everything, ha, ha!) a doe with my crossbow last year at 35 yd because she jumped the string (went belly flat to the ground). I'd love to see a vid on that. Just because you have a crossbow doesn't mean that the deer don't jump the string!
video coming on jumping the string this summer with some great footage (in my opinion anyway) stay tuned. interesting about the elk, i shall have to give this some thought! (I do put in for an elk tag every year here in PA)
Thanks Rich, It is a lot of fun pinning down the crossbow that is for you. I loved that hunt in its own right. Went with our local Excalibur Matrix 380 and am just absolutely over the moon about it. Can easily take any game here in Ontario. And as you said, the ease of use and field maintenance (hasn't been necessary, mind you) is clutch. Would hate to be on the hunt of a lifetime in the back 40 and need somebody with a bowpress for a broken compound bow string. Thanks for the great videos!
I hunted with a Barnett crossbow and loved it now I am older and wanted something more simple and got an Excalibur grizzly it's plenty of power and light easy for an old man to carry
Very nice video. Recently purchased a Center Point Sniper 370. My first crossbow. Found a great deal on them for $225.00. Spent a week doing a bunch of research on it and yes they are not a Top end Crossbow but at least 95% of the reviews and videos I read and watched gave it a very high rating. Seeing its my first crossbow I figured why not. At 185lb pull and est 370fps. Came with a sling , 4 bolt quiver, cocking rope, 3 bolts w/tips and a scope. Can't wait to get out and get this beast sighted in. Thanks again.
damoose1829 I upgraded to the sniper 370 this year from a 175 LB recurve. Best decision I've made. You can find the sniper 370 on Amazon right now for $216. best crossbow for the money hands down.
damoose1829 Chalk me up as a new owner of the Centerpoint Sniper 370. Shot it finally last week and I determined I need a stronger target. It passed through my old cube and halfway through a 2x8 board behind it. Oops. Lost that bolt to damage (trying to remove it from the board lol). It's a steal for the quality.
Great advise Rich, l also almost strayed from my axiom a couple times for one of the more compact Excalibur models but didn't. Then my bro in law bought the matrix 380 which I pitted against mine, and although a very sweet bow ,out to 30 yards the fps is almost unnoticeable & accuracy might be just a touch better from the axiom. Bottom line is this made me quite content with my decision of not straying. But I must admit that the more compact & narrow limb design of the matrix is a plus in the woods for sure.
+Locks Bog yes the Axiom is a big guy that's for sure. It's a little tight in my smaller hunting blinds. But as long as you plan for that ahead of time I can make do. That is neat to hear about the Matrix. Good luck out there and thanks for watching!
I have the Axiom and a buddy of mine just bought the Matrix 310 (NY has a 200 lb limit). I also love the size of that Matrix, but I'm going to stick with my Axiom because of its deadly accuracy. Why fool with what works?
Unless Bunjie breaks a limb, it will be just as good twenty years from now as it was the day you bought it. That's the great thing about a high quality, simplistic product. I love my Excalibur 330, no reason for me to ever "upgrade."
I like recurves and always will buy recurves they are reasonably priced and easy to maintain and can fix anything myself within minutes. I do like compounds and think they are really cool but I'll always buy recurves.
by shit luck i bought abarnett deer hunter II. did some research on line and spent what i had. It is the best sporting expenditure i have ever made. I killed a 100 lb, a 129 lb doe and a 165 lb buck here in N.H. Had given up deer hunting for 20 years and the crossbow has opened the door for me I just love it now..
I thought I would leave my 2 cents here. When I shopping for a way to hunt whitetail deer here in ohio. I look all brand makes and models of crossbows. I settle on the Matrix Mega 405 for alot of the reason some have stated. Low cost string easy to change(if you have the right tool). This is great bow but there are some down side to it also. Like 290 lb draw weight, not easy too cock with rope cocker unless u are young or in good shape. There is a way around that us old folk who what this bow. BUY BUY C2 CRANK trust me your going to need it. Second bad thing I can think off is the width of the cocked or not. She's a wide mama, can be a challenge when walking thru woods or in a blind. Other than these two things. It's a great fast ,accurate, and covered by a lifetime warranty. I knew when i bought this bow that i was not going to own or buy any more crossbows. Lucked out I dont need too its everything I need.
The way you think that you will not own other crossbows is kind of the way I am, too. If it's doing the job, I really don't have any interest in changing it. Ironically, mine is probably just as wide if not wider than yours but much slower LOL. Still, gets the job done. Good luck out there! And thanks for your two cents!
I got my sa fever crossbow as a gift from my wife and kids. I was new at the time bowhunting annd the sa fever models are for beginners..after 5 years i never bother to get another model i just kept my sa fever..i enjoy it..and got lots of rabbits and deer with it.
My grandson bought a cheap Jackal crossbow at Rural King 2 years ago, I took it out when he didn't feel like going, shot my first deer at 10 ft., up close and personal, lol. My 2nd deer with that same crossbow last year was at 25 yds., a really cheap bow, but it gets the job done, I won't take over a 30 yd shot. But now I have my own Jackal crossbow for this year, going to go strictly crossbow this year during all the archery seasons. Like your channel, I am not a small person either, but it doesn't help driving truck for 30+ years either. Lol.
Hello there Allen... How is your jackal holding up? I have one too have had it for a few years now but haven't shot a hog or deer with it yet.. only targets.. This season hope to get something with it..
Well done Rich, Having 2 x-bows, I have found that customer service is very important, yet I don't want a crossbow that requires a lot of customer service (which I have one that does). It's tough to loose your bow due to cracked limbs during the rut. That's why I now have 2 crossbows. So I feel one should consider bow reputation, mfg. and their terms of customer service.
I have a parker and wicked ridge, parker customer service has repaired by bow 3 times due to broken limbs, good service, but don't want to keep using it for this limb problem. Just saying service goes along with all aspects of buying a bow.
Rich, As always you do such a great job in your videos to deliver a clear, concise and compelling presentation! Your legal background and experience certainly shows. I spent about $196 out the door for JACKAL and although I've yet to hunt or kill anything with him yet it is incredibly accurate at 20 & 30 yards. I wish I hadn't accidentally deleted my video demo of the the Tenpoint that is simply amazing for around $600! I'm with you but an entry level and spend the savings going on hunting trips! 🐗🎯
Just bought my first crossbow this year 2019 it was a 2018 model got it cheap because of that it seem nice for the money. We will see how it go's as Maryland bow season is here in 3 weeks! Thanks for the great videos. And the bow I got is a killer instinct 417.
@@Deathbybunjie I've been binge-watching bunjie lol with coming out of compound and going crossbow trying to learn all I can really like your videos very informative.
I own a Titan 200lbs compound crossbow from ek achery research wich rings the bell at around 440-460fps and I made some mods to it: I built some silencer string stoppers on to it and they reduced the sound of the crossbow quite a bit and the secound mod I made is reinforceing the cables and string by wrapping a nylon thread around it ( I can only recommend doing this!) Price was about 650€ and it came with 4 20" carbonfiber bolts, a quiver, a decent 4× scope and a coking-aid. A friend of mine owns a 175lbs recurve crossbow, I think it's a Jaguar by Armex but I'm not sure, and its also a decent crossbow.
+Mister Kanister that is one fast crossbow! It sounds great. It shows you what a range there is out there! Thanks for your input and thanks for watching.
Hey Rich great video as always. Just picked up a mission sub 1 xr. Pricey but guaranteed for life, fast as heck, and uber accuracy. I’m a Matthews fan so it checked all the boxes for me. Tried the Excaliburs but needed compound. The recurve draw weight on the micros are a man maker (that I wasn’t up for). Thanks for all you do
Ya I am loving my Excalibur micro 335fps draw weight 280 and super light and great size for the treestand or blind bud rich you did one hell of a good info on crossbow bud love your vids can't wait for more to be mad love ya buddie and bungee
Great video, Rich. As I have told more than a few people, a $300 dollar crossbow will kill just like a $2000 one. You can only kill something, just so dead.
Spot on Rich! I got a carbon Express X force 350. Love it bang for the buck. highly recommend for first time crossbow hunters out there. I shot my first doe with it.
Well I'm disabled now from an accident at work, and can't use a regular bow, I have an opportunity to go hunting next year, but need a crossbow... I'm looking for a complete hunting package so I don't have to worry about forgetting something or dropping something on the way to the hunting blind... So I was told I should be looking for something that shoots a heavy bolt at least 350fps for where they hunt, he prefers over 400fps, it must have a hand crank as both shoulders are bad and my back is broken in 5 places and neck in 3 places... I'm looking for one built in because if I forget the crank in the truck I can't hunt, or if it falls out on the way to the blind, I'm done as well... I want a bow that if you have the bow you have "EVERYTHING" you need to hunt... I need a scope that has a rangefinder built in so I know how far away the deer is and which dot to use... My eyesight isn't the greatest after the accident, so trying to judge the distance isn't a good idea... Being the very first person to ever get injured at work, and being the very first person to ever to be put on Social Security Disability, I figured I'm probably the first person to need a complete hunting crossbow for around $500. or better as well?? So if you know where I can get a complete hunting set that has "everything" you need to hunt big deer, let me know what is available, as I need something by next spring so I have the summer to practice with it until fall... Hopefully I can find a place that gives Huge Discounts to Disabled people or Seniors...
A guy that I work with asked me if I wanted to buy a crossbow for $150. He said that it was in like new condition, that it comes with a bag and extra arrows, extra string, the whole nine yards. I never owned a crossbow so I thought I'd give it a try. It turned out to be an Excaliber Axiom. A buddy of mine liked it so much that he went out and purchased an Excalibur for himself. I love the simplicity of it. I'm sold on Excalibur.
Good video looking in to getting a crossbow defiantly gave me a better idea on what to look for and I'm also from NEPA so that's awesome first UA-cam person I've found from my state now subscribed
Having hunted with both recurve and compound I agree with Rich, recurve is better. Yes they are louder and harder to cock, but they are more durable, easier to maintain, don't need to be timed...in general more reliable. I hunt a lot on public land and I need a bow that I can drag through a mile of knarly vegetation and be confident in. My compound had to be cocked in advance because it had to be cranked, a noisy process. Carrying it was worrysome , I contantly struggled to keep my hands away from the zone of death and occasionally tripped with the bow in hand. I don't need to cock my recurve until I get to the stand as the rope cocker is quiet. In general it fits my style of hunting.
+Don Finley that's a neat perspective, thanks for that. I don't like to cock mine until I get to the stand, either. Much easier to carry when it's uncocked.
I have been fortunate enough to take a turkey with my crossbow. Only once. It was a 45 yards shot.. I still haven't taken a deer with my .44 mag Super Redhawk, though. Something to look forward to.
I spent 74$ on a 175lb jaguar crossbow comes with a red dot. With a fixed 3 blade 100 grain and a 20 inch carbon arrow it will make good hits to 40 yards and can do the job. Im impressed for under 100$ bill. Certainly a slower bow at 220-240 fps but wow, for the money i am happy.
Love my ten point had a fang was very disappointed down the road I may get a better one but it works awesome so I don’t feel the need for a better just gotta get more range time still working on different bolts weights I did get a red/green lines in the scope
Crossbow companies are watching this video and going "NOOOOOOOOO!!!" "People need to fix it even if it ain't broke! That's how we make all our money!" LOL
All good advice, great video. I bought a Barnett Jackal package for $215, my budget was only $300 so I did $215 and left 85 for targets and accessories. Love it. Spring gobbler was my first season with it and didn't see anything either, hear a lot close but didn't get anything. I live in New York, this coming archery season I will be hunting CT (PMed you a video and info on that spot) due to the early season and then allowing crossbow. We are still fighting here in NY, crossbow bill needs only the legislation passed (denied in 2012, and 2014) but we have our fingers crossed, though it will still be illegal in LI and Westchester. I hope it passes so I have a longer chance of nailing the 15 point I saw in my secret spot on state land last year.
They might not pass the bill again. Better let me know where that secret spot is on state land and I'll give you a hand with that 15-point. Wouldn't want him to go to waste. :-)
Nice video just subscribed, just bought a center point Amped 415 crossbow for $260 from Dunham’s! , can’t wait to take a deer with this. Keep up the informative vids😎🇺🇸
To the discussion on bow weight.... I have taken Bison with a 60# recurve at 30 yards. 150# crossbow is more than enough. It's all about shot placement. No worries.
I think you're right, the day will come when I shoot a moose with this thing LOL definitely a bear in the near future I am hoping thanks for this and thanks for watching
I highly recommend the carbon express blade pro package deal comes with pull string and a crank as well as a bow with 175 lb draw crossbow with cams that shoots over 300 fps . I got one and love it took many deer with it as well as bear and coyotes. For 400 or less u can get then at bass pro and online shop around you can find them mark down as low as 200. I also own a ten point crossbow cam it's ok but I do like my carbon express crossbow better it not only shoots better has more power and shoots a inch group at 80 yards and still will about pass all way through a cheap 15 dollar foam target from walmart. Keep in mine from 10 to 50 yards it will do a complete pass through broad side on a deer. I also on the sas honor recurve basically a cheap 100 dollar bow shoots great out to 35 yards comes with pull string to help cock the crossbow 175 lb draw nice compact bow great for the price . And I also own a mk folding crossbow 180 lb draw recurve on the way after shooting a buddy's I decided I needed one due to it folds up to fit in my hunting backpack and is great to use for urban archery season . Any one new crossbow I highly recommend you spend the money on the carbon express pro model but if you don't have a few 100 to drop on one I highly recommend the sas honor you can find them on ebay for 99 bucks basically 100 bucks with free shipping great bow for the money dose have red dot come with bolts and string to help cock the bow shoots great out to 35 yards nice budget crossbow for the money and new hunter or shooter also great for those who want a light weight crossbow keep in mind it's 175 lb pull but with the sting to cock it dose make it feel like 80 . You don't always need the most expensive crossbow u just need one that groups good and pratice. Hopefully this gives some one some help I've been hunting about 20 years with crossbow, compound, recurve, rifle , muzzle loader , shot gun , pistol and even pcp air rifles . I do like my recurve crossbows and hight recommend new shooters get a recurve to start with then if you down the road decide to try a cam crossbow then you will have the experience to be able to decide. Also check out your local archery shop see if they will let you try a fee floor models out to see what feels comfortable with you .
Oh yes because I know you lot over the pond like Hawke. If I mention Hawke down the pub I'm likely to get home looking like a Panda bear. And I've used the cheapie Hawke scopes and found them to be comparable to empty toilet paper tubes. More good Xbow scopes needed. With light soaking variable dot intensity settings ( and please, good glass )
I just got a parker tornado F4 compound crossbow. Good news is I got it second hand and only cost me $400...bad news is I just learned that Parker went out of business which has me a bit worried when it comes to repairs and accessories such as bolts and such.
I have a purely academic question. I would agree that accuracy is number one. It’s more important than speed, energy and so forth. I also agree that taking good shots is the best way to go to be successful. Let us examine energy level just a bit. I am in no way advocating taking bad shots, not my point. Let’s say a hunter in a tree stand spots a Boone & Crockett buck at about 33 yards out and facing away. You would hope to get a broadside shot, but this is the only opportunity you get. Based on the hunters knowledge and experience with their equipment, they know that they can place their arrow in the top of the back, angle down through the chest cavity and come out the brisket. Based on the circumstances, they are confident in making such a shot. This may not be an ideal shot. There could be circumstances where an angling or quartering shot is also less than ideal and these instances can happen. Again, not advocating bad shots, but not every situation is ideal. In certain circumstances, how much does energy make a difference when it comes to this idea? If the hunter was shooting a 250-275 or similar velocity bow, would they have enough energy to drive that arrow through to what counts with confidence? I have observed a 20 yard shot from a tree stand drive in through the front of the neck at an angle, pass through the chest, and come out just behind the furthest rib on the offside. This crossbow was around 360 FPS. I’m simply curious about your thoughts on this. Does less energy put some limitations on some shots?
Great video bro . I have a Jaguar 175 pound recurve crossbow . It currently has a red dot , I want to switch it out for a 4x32 scope and I want to add a bowjax silencer kit . I also plan to buy some carbon bolts i haven't made up my mind as of broadheads .
Anyone looking for a good, affordable xbow, i say go for a barnett recruit recurve. I spent $116 on mine on walmart's site and it's a fine package. Only 245 fps, BUT that's plenty for a deer, especially when where i live at a far shot is 30 yards. I've got mine sighted in for 20, 25 and 30 yards with the new 4x32 illuminated scope. I'm assuming the 3 mil dots under it would be 35-45 yards respectively. Could it take a deer at 40 yards or over? Yes, I've read reviews where people kill deer at 45 yards before with a total pass through.
I bought my first crossbow in 2014 it was bcr Barrett recurve crossbow it shot 245 fps I shot 5 deer with that crossbow now I got a Barrett jackal shoots 315 fps no deer with it tho
Very good information the simplest configuration less things to go wrong , remember hunters been bringing down large animals with just a bow ( and you got to get closer). I have a Ten point and everything has to work like an orchestra on it yep complicated but I am use too it and killed game with it.( OMG it was hitting a thumbnail orange dot sticker at 40 yards when i first sited it in) I have a Leupold Vendetta scope rangefinder well I might take it off it moves at the slightest jar.
Yes I got some business to take care of seen the owner of the land i hunt on , he was on his truck dumping big trunk size logs I'll catch him on his land and ask if I can still hunt there I only lived here for like 50 yrs except going to service and what not back here again, deer love mineral pits , I mean I abide by the law ofcouse and stop using it before the season by the law , I love it , When you think about it deer eat every thing weeds, leaves , twings ECT. BUT that dosn't guarantee what deer you are going to get by no means.
I have a killer instinct bone collector 370 so far so good and cheep honestly at Walmart it's $250 for whole set up I ain't chronograph speed but seems to be more than fast enough
Death by Bunjie I am new to crossbow hunting and I'm watching your vids to get some info. Thanks and keep in touch. Maybe we can meet up some day I'm over here by PGH. Nice Crossbow!
@@MartinMignogna Best strings I have ever used Marty. Will look you up when it's time to replace them. Hope things are going good for you. Take care DD
New subscriber here . I am looking to buy my first crossbow sometime this year. I currently use a compound and had decent success. You can call me cheap or frugal if you want, but I am not looking to spend a fortune. That’s how I am with most adventures I take on.my compound is a used Darton I bought off my Son in law for $150. That being said I don’t want a used crossbow and also want a decent value. I am leaning towards a recurve and also an Excalibur. I don’t know if there are any other decent brands out there. I have very little experience with crossbows. My pastor lent me his Parker challenger to practice with. The first shot was only my third shot from any crossbow. Lost the bolt. Later I tried again and found the scope was severely off. (May post video later) . Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.
You talk like the draw weight would determine how fast a crossbow is but thats not true at all. There are compound crossbows that have 200lbs draw weight and shoot 400 fps fast. The Excalibur micro 335 for example shoots 335fps but has a hefty draw weight of 275lbs becaus its a small bow. I don't blame you but thats kind of misleading. Other than that awesome video thx.
good point, draw weight is not everything and the mechanical advantage of a compound crossbow has a lot of effect on speed. then again, if you reduce the draw weight on that micro 335 to 100lbs, it won't shoot 335 feet per second, that's for sure.
PS on the Turkey, I always see them in the Fall while deer hunting the water company land during archery and they do not permit any other game (including coyote or 🦃 turkey! Bummer. 🎯
Hi rich have you tried or heard of the Sevr 2" robusto in 150 gn. Looking into mechanical broadheads and you are having good hunts with schwacker gona give them a try also.
Thanks rich for ur reply and ur helpful videos. They've helped a lot. From my research and ur video's I've established a 400 fps bow, 470 to 510 arrows I built and assorted broadheads fixed singles bevel, and 2" cut 150 gn mechanicals. Thanks again
Ok. I’ve been watching Rich for about a year now and he’s the reason I know what I know about crossbow hunting. I started out with a Barnett Recruit Terrain, 330fps compound but though I would exchange it for the whitetail Pro Str by Barnett because Bass Pro shops honored an amazon ad that saved me $150 off the price of the bow. I thought I got away with a steal of a deal because the bow originally costed $699 and I got it for $459.99 and or was a 400 FPS bow. I ended up having to go back to BPS’s 4 times bc the string/cables kept fraying so i had to get the riser replaced so I wasted a lot of gas and dealt with a lot of 💩. I ended up selling the Barnett crossbow for $599 on eBay and bought myself an Excalibur Bulldog 440. I almost got an assassin 420TD because I wanted to get a bow that’ll be future proof. I ended up with the BD 440 bc it was the fastest Excalibur on the market and it was cheaper than the assassin 420TD because of Rich. I didn’t need the TD feature and I was ready to spend $2000 for the bow but I ended up with the BD 440 for $1399 and I bought airbrakes and other suppression devices bc it already came with the rope cranking device. I bought the sds, airbrakes, the tac pac for a bipod, and the stringing aid and I still spent less than $2000. If you’re looking for a good bow as a starter I would recommend you get the Excalibur AXE 340. They’re the newest and it’s built on a micro system and cocking it should be relatively easy. I think I’ve seen them on Excalibur’s website for around $600 and you get a bomb proof boss with a lifetime warranty. Their resell value is great Incase you’re looking to sell it after a few years and upgrade to their top of the line bows. I would stay away from compounds and you won’t have all the headaches that comes with a compound bow. You can change the strings on an Excalibur on the fly but if you need to change your strings and you have a compound bow then you’re going to be out of commission and at the mercy of the pro shop. Recurve tech is the way to go bc you can change the string yourself and on the long run save more money. More people get compounds than recurves so if you need it serviced you’ll have to get in line. With an Excalibur, the stringing aid costs $34.99 and the replacement string is $39.99 and if you take the two things with you then you’ll never have to cut a hunt down early. Plus, you can decock a recurve without milking yourself unlike the compound bow. That’s it. There’s my rant. 😂
That is some rant LOL! But you and I have talked about this and I am familiar with your story. You make some great points here and I appreciate you sharing that for others. Good luck!
Death by Bunjie well here’s a short one. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on the long run make sure you buy an Excalibur and you’ll save yourself money and headaches. They are the best in the market, in my honest opinion. Also, you’re a testament to that! You’ve had Bunnies for over 9 years and you still haven’t bought a new bow because it’s not broken and you don’t need to fix what’s not broken. If you like wasting money then buy a compound bow and then you’ll wish you bought an Excalibur. LOl.
I'm one of those people that complain about a red-dot sight being too bright in low light conditions. I still use a red-dot on my compound bow. My solution. Easy. I use a battery that is weak (always having a spare battery with me).
May be a dumb question, and somewhat obvious, but are you able to turn the intensity down? My jaguar came with a red dot sight with 10 different brightness settings, 1 - 10, the lowest setting was too low for daylight shooting, and anything above 4 was too strong for night time shooting, but the lower the setting the smaller and more precise the reticles were.
I enjoy your videos , I have two Excalibur crossbows , Grizzly and the vortex. I want to shoot 125 grain muzzys but I'm afraid of limb breakage, you thoughts on this subject
Newb question. Can I sight my crossbow on my own. If so do u have a video for that? I really like how you explain things and make things simple and don’t emphasize on buying the big money things. I have a Barnett jackal and this will be my first season using it and hunting.
I just bought a Excalibur Matrix GRZ2.. ONLY $350 after taxes and shipping! Dicks sporting goods... only thing is that it doesn’t have anti-dry fire or REDS. Do you suggest installing these parts? Thanks! Great video
Sounds like you got a great deal, so if you want to spend a little extra money and play with them it wouldn't be a bad idea. I really like mine! It will slow your bow down. But makes it a lot more fun to shoot in my opinion. You can always take them off if you're careful during the installation. Good luck!
My local archery shop has some Bear X Trek 380 crossbows on clearance because they're moving over to Excalibur. 380 fps and about 170lb draw weight. Comes with everything but a crank for 399.99 According to your videos (I'm subscribing!) These specs would cover deer but not elk or moose. I'm initially a rifle hunter (.308 wetherby) so I'm the kind of person that would like a crossbow with as much versatility as my .308. I know, not very realistic. 😅 Your opinion would be much appreciated. 😁
That crossbow will kill bear and moose and Elk with a proper broadhead, probably a big heavy fixed blade Broadhead on a heavy Arrow, and it will kill deer just fine with a stock arrow and a mechanical Broadhead with good shots! And that price sounds great!
@@Deathbybunjie thank you so much for the quick response!!! I’m going back to the store Friday (the store has 3 left) so my mom can get a feel for it. If she likes it too, it’s coming home with us!
Love your videos, am seriously thinking about getting into this sport, looks like a lot of fun. Just learned that one has to wax their bow strings. Do you have a recommendation on what brand/type to use? Or is this like asking someone what sort of motor oil they use in their motorcycle? ;-)
Great video. I'm still torn on what bow I want. Just a thought. Some rifle scopes can control the Glow on the dot ( Zeiss ) and also if you have a big optic it soaks low light in. Are there crossbow scopes that do this for the hunter ?
Death by Bunjie,I just found your channel and subscribed, you for your videos. If you were going to buy a new Excalibur Crossbow today, what would you buy?Optic?Arrow?Broadhead? Thanks again,
Off the top of my head, micro 335 with the Twilight DLX scope, whatever Arrow Excalibur recommends, and the rage hypodermic crossbow Broadhead assuming it shoots straight on that crossbow, how's that? LOL.
heyo brother new to the channel and have yet to purchase my first but a random add for excalibur assassin came up and it was like beauty hit me with a Buick. maybe in the future il have er but for now do you recommend a good starter bow ?keep doing what you love brother and I wish you and bunjie a wicked future. cheers
+Your Canadian Brother maybe look for an old used Excalibur if that's what you are interested in? I have a 2010 Excalibur Axiom and that's all I use. Just a thought.
Hmm yea I'll go with the compound one. I'm a small girl i would rather not struggle with the cocking. Soo is 165 reliable for hunting most north American game? Most my crossbow use eill be purely range. I'm getting a cheap 250$ one but occasionally I might actually hunt with it. Anyways i want to make certain its Humane for that. I'm a bow person not a cbow person. N i would be silly to think of the draw weights in the same way
165 can get it done, just run your specs through an arrow ballistics calculator online first to make sure enough KE. FYI Bunjie is 175, so pretty close.
PSC is a company we don't hear an awful lot about anymore but they were trendsetters back in the day, can't say good or bad as to their current reputation but overall I do like that company
Death, I am new to crossbow hunting. SO new that I don't yet own a crossbow. I need to start cheap, so what do I need to know if seek one out on Craigslist or even a Pawn Shop. They are widely available in both, but are there issues with buying used crossbows? Or, rather, what are the issues with buying used crossbows? Thanks! Love your videos!
New sub here. I came across your channel because I just got a crossbow at Bass Pro for $219 and I have no idea what im doing. I would have gotten a compound bow but I only have 8 fingers and it's hard for me to grip the string or bow with my left hand. The crossbow I just got came with a crank so now I'm set. Would you have any good nicknames for my new bow?
Another great video. However, My 6 year old son made a point to correct you on one thing...he wanted to remind you that they are called bolts, not arrows. Lol.
You have a great voice, and it's nice seeing someone talking about this stuff who is not wearing camo.
He is wearing urban camo
You didn't notice the other 5 guys in the shot.
I always hunted ducks with my Lab. Never hit a one.
I couldn't throw the dog high enough.
+Prof.Kent lol that made my day
Disclaimer: No dogs were actually thrown to make this joke.
Close your eyes and imagine..... Wow, quite a pretty scene.
Prof.Kent I would suggest you lift your lab 1000 reps/day and I bet you’ll be able to throw it up high enough next time. Lol.
Get a dachshund and throw it like a dart
Good vid. I like the way you don't think you have to have all the latest and greatest info and gear. Seriously. Get good equipment, learn how to utilize it perfectly, and you are set. Your advice is very real-life and down to earth unlike some others. Kudos.
thanks, glad to hear you agree on the equipment, and thanks for watching!
Fantastic advice... I'll remember that.... Reminds me of this; "Better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all".
Watching this vid four years later, all this great advice stands the rest of time.
I am brand new in looking into getting a crossbow. I am also in PA. Thank you for the great information and honest videos
Can't argue with that!
Thanks for a great video, very informative, I was thinking to buy a compound crossbow but now I'm satisfied with the simple and best recurve one.
Did a whole series this spring check those out too
Take care. Ian.
Here in Nova Scotia, it’s illegal to hunt with a crossbow whose draw weight less than 150 lbs.
I live in Lackawanna County and plan to get into hunting with a crossbow. I have been researching different models for quite some time.
Just the best crossbow hunting channel
well thank you very much, more coming soon!
Death by Bunjie do you have an episode on "the first day going in the woods" like things you need
I do not but boy that is a great idea, I will have to do one soon. This summer, look for it. Great idea, thank you.
Death by Bunjie thank you!!! Me and a lot of new crossbow hunters need a pro to teach us. Youre the best!
Best of luck to you and Mabel this year! Great to hear, keep me posted!
Good to hear, thanks for the input and thanks for watching!
I currently have a Center point sniper elite 370 whisperer I’ve had for about 5 year. I’m going to buy the Excalibur micro extreme
That’s how I feel about my ibex I got lucky with it for randomly reaching in the crossbow world and getting that model
Thanks man!
Thats awesome, good luck!
Thanks Rich,
It is a lot of fun pinning down the crossbow that is for you.
+Tyler Davis ahhh, the hunt for the right crossbow lol, yeah, great stuff!
I hunted with a Barnett crossbow and loved it now I am older and wanted something more simple and got an Excalibur grizzly it's plenty of power and light easy for an old man to carry
I look at your crossbow and I like it I'm so happy that you are on UA-cam and I am happy to see you.
thanks and glad to have you watching!
+damoose1829 that does sound like a beast. Also sounds like a good bargain. Let me know how it shoots.
damoose1829 I upgraded to the sniper 370 this year from a 175 LB recurve.
It's a steal for the quality.
that does sound like a great deal!
I love my Excalibur 330, no reason for me to ever "upgrade."
well said, thanks for your support
I like recurves and always will buy recurves they are reasonably priced and easy to maintain and can fix anything myself within minutes. I do like compounds and think they are really cool but I'll always buy recurves.
by shit luck i bought abarnett deer hunter II. did some research on line and spent what i had. It is the best sporting expenditure i have ever made. I killed a 100 lb, a 129 lb doe and a 165 lb buck here in N.H. Had given up deer hunting for 20 years and the crossbow has opened the door for me I just love it now..
i know the feeling, great to hear it, and good luck this year!
Nothing wrong with that!
Very informative no nonsense video.
Lol.
+Allen Towell lol know what you mean, good luck out there and glad to hear of your successes!
+daniellegrandpa who is good, who is bad with customer service?
I have a parker and wicked ridge, parker customer service has repaired by bow 3 times due to broken limbs, good service, but don't want to keep using it for this limb problem. Just saying service goes along with all aspects of buying a bow.
Thanks for your valuable advice. You have very logical arguments!!
Rich,
As always you do such a great job in your videos to deliver a clear, concise and compelling presentation!
🐗🎯
+Ron Lanzo sounds like a plan! Thanks for watching!
Just bought my first crossbow this year 2019 it was a 2018 model got it cheap because of that it seem nice for the money. We will see how it go's as Maryland bow season is here in 3 weeks! Thanks for the great videos. And the bow I got is a killer instinct 417.
That sounds good, let's go Maryland!
@@Deathbybunjie I've been binge-watching bunjie lol with coming out of compound and going crossbow trying to learn all I can really like your videos very informative.
I own a Titan 200lbs compound crossbow from ek achery research wich rings the bell at around 440-460fps and I made some mods to it: I built some silencer string stoppers on to it and they reduced the sound of the crossbow quite a bit and the secound mod I made is reinforceing the cables and string by wrapping a nylon thread around it ( I can only recommend doing this!)
Price was about 650€ and it came with 4 20" carbonfiber bolts, a quiver, a decent 4× scope and a coking-aid.
Thanks for all you do
man maker lol i know what you mean. hope the new xbow works out great for you! keep me posted!
Great video as always!
Ya I am loving my Excalibur micro 335fps draw weight 280 and super light and great size for the treestand or blind bud rich you did one hell of a good info on crossbow bud love your vids can't wait for more to be mad love ya buddie and bungee
thanks, good to hear from you as always! thanks again for watching!
Great video, Rich. As I have told more than a few people, a $300 dollar crossbow will kill just like a $2000 one. You can only kill something, just so dead.
LOL very well put.
Spot on Rich! I got a carbon Express X force 350. Love it bang for the buck. highly recommend for first time crossbow hunters out there. I shot my first doe with it.
+Brian Palencar good to hear and thanks for the input!
Lol as to being the "first person", not as to your injuries. Sorry to hear about that, for sure! Off the top of my head, Excalibur's new Axe series?
I picked up a center point patriot 415fps with arrows and a crank, everything you need except broadheads. price is 250
A guy that I work with asked me if I wanted to buy a crossbow for $150.
Great to hear, I love mine, hope it works well for you! Good luck!
Good video looking in to getting a crossbow defiantly gave me a better idea on what to look for and I'm also from NEPA so that's awesome first UA-cam person I've found from my state now subscribed
great to hear from a fellow Pennsylvanian, good luck and thanks for watching!
+Prof.Kent something to look forward to indeed
I spent 74$ on a 175lb jaguar crossbow comes with a red dot. With a fixed 3 blade 100 grain and a 20 inch carbon arrow it will make good hits to 40 yards and can do the job. Im impressed for under 100$ bill. Certainly a slower bow at 220-240 fps but wow, for the money i am happy.
Cool, good luck!
That's how we make all our money!"
LOL
+Vince Fernandez lol yeah, they'll have to make do haha
+James Lugo good luck with the legislation and the 15-point. Keep me posted!
Death by Bunjie senate didn't release the bill to the floor. It died. Gotta do it all over again next year...smh, NY is the worst.
+James Lugo sad to hear, hang in there
They might not pass the bill again. Better let me know where that secret spot is on state land and I'll give you a hand with that 15-point. Wouldn't want him to go to waste. :-)
Prof.Kent haha, I'll be putting my time in during gun season
Nice video just subscribed, just bought a center point Amped 415 crossbow for $260 from Dunham’s! , can’t wait to take a deer with this. Keep up the informative vids😎🇺🇸
Good luck!
Man, there are a lot of great points here! Thanks for this!
+Kieron Bevan I had to think about that panda bear reference LOL
I just got a parker tornado F4 compound crossbow. Good news is I got it second hand and only cost me $400...bad news is I just learned that Parker went out of business which has me a bit worried when it comes to repairs and accessories such as bolts and such.
That crossbow will get the job done, I hope it works out for you and good luck!
I also plan to buy some carbon bolts i haven't made up my mind as of broadheads .
let me know how you make out with this, i am interested. Good luck!
Matter of time, good luck and yeah, we can get it done without 400fps lol
Let me know how your jackal does I have one too and haven't shot any deer yet..
+1digitalwatcher that does sound like a beast though that's cool.
+1digitalwatcher good to hear from you again btw, hope all is well!
BUT that dosn't guarantee what deer you are going to get by no means.
true indeed, no guarantees in this business! good luck out there!
ty sir !
The new Excalibur micro that is really quite might be something worth upgrading for.
+Brandon Kwan it is indeed, if I were upgrading that'd be on the short list
I have a killer instinct bone collector 370 so far so good and cheep honestly at Walmart it's $250 for whole set up I ain't chronograph speed but seems to be more than fast enough
I'm in pa too. I have the Centerpoint sniper compound crossbow 370
+Marty Mig. Cool! Having anyluck?
Death by Bunjie I am new to crossbow hunting and I'm watching your vids to get some info. Thanks and keep in touch. Maybe we can meet up some day I'm over here by PGH. Nice Crossbow!
Could this be the same Marty Mig who made me a sweet set of crossbow strings and cables?
@@donutdan1508
Sure is ! How's the custom string set holding up for you?
Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.
welcome to crossbows...there's a ton of good ones, depends on price range. I'd look at ones around 400fps though, personally.
Check out crossbow nation. Id like an Excalibur, but too expensive. Crosman crossbows were site for me. I went with amped 415. Quiet!!!
Bummer.
🎯
+Ron Lanzo figures lol
Rich
I think we should hunt Spring turkey together in PA next year and I will use JACKAL! We could both get our 1St Tom on UA-cam.
🎯
+Ron Lanzo any idea where? I got deer minerals all over and can't really hunt here so much...
So, we'll go to Alabama! We'd both be guaranteed of at least one nice Tom each!
Hi rich have you tried or heard of the Sevr 2" robusto in 150 gn. Looking into mechanical broadheads and you are having good hunts with schwacker gona give them a try also.
People love those SEVRs too!
+Prof.Kent that's a neat tip!
Yea those glows in my sight lowers my accuracy significantly. Just can't shoot with en
Sorry to hear that but can understand it, good luck out there
May be a dumb question, and somewhat obvious, but are you able to turn the intensity down?
My jaguar came with a red dot sight with 10 different brightness settings, 1 - 10, the lowest setting was too low for daylight shooting, and anything above 4 was too strong for night time shooting, but the lower the setting the smaller and more precise the reticles were.
Thanks for sharing 👍
I enjoy your videos , I have two Excalibur crossbows , Grizzly and the vortex. I want to shoot 125 grain muzzys but I'm afraid of limb breakage, you thoughts on this subject
I am doing a Breaking Limbs series...the first video is already up. These should help, I hope!
I got a Barnett wildcat recurve do you think it canget a deer?
They have been used to do that before, that's for sure, I recommend a fixed blade Broadhead and close in shots
What’s a good cross bow for someone who’s disabused that won’t cost a lot
Newb question. Can I sight my crossbow on my own. If so do u have a video for that? I really like how you explain things and make things simple and don’t emphasize on buying the big money things. I have a Barnett jackal and this will be my first season using it and hunting.
Yep, a few videos. Some from a few years back, and the fourth of a for part series is live tomorrow check out all 4, they'll help I hope
Good luck!
Death by Bunjie do you think anti dry fire is necessary? I found a part for $80
Great... What crossbow do u recommend for beginners around the price of this one in your video or would it be a great starter weapon?
There are tons of options. I don't recommend any particular one, but try before you buy to make sure it fits you and it's accurate, hope that helps
Excalibur... I'd steer away from the Micro... but virtually any Excal
I have that five point crossbow that was showing at 1:46
That's pretty cool
My local archery shop has some Bear X Trek 380 crossbows on clearance because they're moving over to Excalibur.
380 fps and about 170lb draw weight.
Comes with everything but a crank for 399.99
According to your videos (I'm subscribing!)
These specs would cover deer but not elk or moose.
I'm initially a rifle hunter (.308 wetherby) so I'm the kind of person that would like a crossbow with as much versatility as my .308.
I know, not very realistic. 😅
Your opinion would be much appreciated.
Or is this like asking someone what sort of motor oil they use in their motorcycle? ;-)
Lol all good questions, I say start with what manufacturer recommends and go from there
Great video. I'm still torn on what bow I want. Just a thought. Some rifle scopes can control the Glow on the dot ( Zeiss ) and also if you have a big optic it soaks low light in. Are there crossbow scopes that do this for the hunter ?
+Kieron Bevan Zeiss makes crossbow scopes, I have not used one but I cannot imagine that that they are anything less than awesome
Damn, you remind me of that guy from full metal jacket, what was his name again...? But nice videos, keep it up! ;)
+karatepro97 LOL, thanks and thanks for watching.
I killed a 8 point buck at 50 yards with my centerpoint 390 xt yesterday you really don't need any faster! around 400 is more than enough
Congratulations!
LOL.
Death by Bunjie, thanks, that was great!I have to ask,why would you pick that particular crossbow? Thanks again.
keep up the great work :) i wish one day to go hunting with you
Thanks sounds cool
heyo brother new to the channel and have yet to purchase my first but a random add for excalibur assassin came up and it was like beauty hit me with a Buick. maybe in the future il have er but for now do you recommend a good starter bow ?keep doing what you love brother and I wish you and bunjie a wicked future.
cheers
+Your Canadian Brother maybe look for an old used Excalibur if that's what you are interested in? I have a 2010 Excalibur Axiom and that's all I use. Just a thought.
Death by Bunjie thx ^_^
What is your thoughts on a pse coalition frontier crossbow.
PSC is a company we don't hear an awful lot about anymore but they were trendsetters back in the day, can't say good or bad as to their current reputation but overall I do like that company
@@Deathbybunjie thanks .I bought 4 of these .looks really good .if I don't like i will sell them try something else.thanks
Good question, sent you a pm on this, also tell you will try to do a video on this topic for Crossbow Appreciation Month which starts on Saturday!
Lol you're on your own with the name make it special! Good luck and welcome to crossbows!
Another great video. However, My 6 year old son made a point to correct you on one thing...he wanted to remind you that they are called bolts, not arrows. Lol.
