Of all the videos I have seen on this exact subject, I think this is by far the best comparison video I have ever seen. I want to say thank you for taking the time to not only make this video, but also go and re-shoot the trajectory of this video and make it more visible. I think this should help so many figure out what weigh arrow would work best for their hunting style and or needs. The penetration and trajectory in my opinion makes a huge difference on the choice for me, I know every one has different needs, but for a multitude of years now, I have had more overall luck in hunting situations with the splitting the wight between 400 and 500, my goal set up being 450. Now granted I will never take a 80 yard shot in my area I hunt, too many limbs, briars etc, I would not be able to see at that distance for an ethical shot, however, the penetration of going way heavier and increasing the trajectory say from the 400-600 increases those variables in my opinion and makes it easier to stick with my Ideal weight and this confirms it, the penetration is negligible in my opinion for the small deer I hunt. I dont have those huge Kansas bucks in my area of the world and not needing the penetration for an elk. We dont have Elk. Thanks again my friend Ana know you have a new sub out of this video, Look forward to seeing what you two come up with next. Dale SUB 139
Awesome video, i think this is a question that everyone is always asking and nobody will agree on, but this is great information to help settle someone's decision
This was a very good video Thank you for taking the time to make this happen! I’m excited to see what comes from this Jon and Colton are the new dynamic duo “Don’t make me look fat” instant classic!!
Everyone at the shop including Jon would agree lol but he’s one of the best shots we know. That’s why we had him as the shooter is this video. Glad you liked the content!
Interesting results for sure. The trajectory part was so cool. Would be interesting to see the trajectory of like 60 lb draw with 400-425-450 grain arrows. From like 20-30-40-50. There’s a lot of hunters I think that fall into that category? 👍👍👀 waiting to see what you guys come up with next. Maybe a few fixed blade heads into cardboard?
We love the way you think! We have plans to do a similar test with say a 50lb bow with a 300, 400 and 500 grain arrow so you could find a happy medium if you shoot say 60lbs with a shorter draw comparing both videos but being 50lbs and a shorter draw in a testing video, that will help out a lot of kids, women and men that shoot lower poundage decide on an arrow setup as well.
@@GrandValleySportingGoods This is a great idea, being I just got into the sport again after years of being out of practice. I started this year with my second ever compound. First was when I was a child. Started with the Adapt 2 plus RTH Package (45-60).. Which I think was fair for the bow/Accessories. I didn't want to shell out 1k+ for a bow to know if I would get into it again. I am having a blast. Started a little over a month ago around 43# 27 inches of draw shooting a confirmed 411 grain arrow. (Easton Axis Sport '5mm' 340 spine) Which admittedly is a little over spined. But as I work my way up to 60 pounds I think it should essentially be my go to arrow for awhile. I may eventually get some RIP TKOs, but for now I am having a great time. I have upped the weight around half a turn on the limb every week, and I am shooting the arrow around 220FPS atm. (For now I have stopped increasing poundage as it is comfortable enough for me to shoot 30-50 arrows a day still. Only having to worry about mechanics and form at this time) Not sure the draw weight as I am having my friend use the draw scale to deter my mind from going okay that's good enough for me.
@@cr500miketypically shy away from single bevels because of flight at distance but if you’re keeping it inside 40 that should be a great arrow setup for you!
@@shanestout3543 the reason we left KE out is that KE is the energy at impact where momentum is what drives it through the animal. All though they typically coincide with one another. For example if you have a 4,5 and 6mm arrow that weigh the same, your KE on impact would be the same but your penetration would be different. We used a consistent material that obviously isn’t the same density as an animal but at least shows you much energy and penetration 3 different weights have at distance. We appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and thank you for leaving a comment!
You are correct! But that is the inner diameter, the outer diameter with a 150 spine is about 7.5mm so with the other arrows that was as close as we could get to keeping the same outer diameter.
@@philiphines7292 you are correct! But 5mm is the inner diameter. The outer diameter on a 150 spine is about 7.5mm which comparable to the other arrows we tested
"These are around the same FOC" The whole POINT in adding weight to your arrow system (for penetration) is to add the weight up front (FOC). Of course, the GPI will increase "some" with the correct increase in spine, but the tests and data points conducted by Ashby and Troy Fowler do not center around a "heavy arrow" just for the sake of a heavy arrow. They always specified to shoot as light of an arrow as possible that would spine for the increased weight up front.
@@tonyezolt4560 we’re planning on doing another video that is strictly based off of FOC. Starting with around 8% all the way to 21% at 500 grains all tuned to the bow to truly show what FOC does. Ashby’s test was done with traditional equipment so we’re trying to show what it does with a modern compound.
@@GrandValleySportingGoods That would be great and more to the point. I'll never understand why folks point out the "traditional equipment". Point is, it's done with a kinetic energy machine that remains the same with only the arrows changing. I look forward to that video, but quite frankly, I know the results. Been using a heavy FOC arrow the last four years and it's literally "night and day" difference on animals.
Now do a test where the arrow weights really matter !!! Using a fancy , high poundage compound in a penitration test with these weights is just all kinds of silly !!! Go get a recurve that shoots 170fps and do the test !!! Or get a compound thats set on #45 lbs Doing this with a compound and the objects your actually shooting into is a complete waste of time and has been done countless times.
Most hunters use 60-65 lbs and between 27-29 inch draw length. AMC anyone flinging an arrow at an animal past 50 yards needs to get themselves checked.
the medium is ment to stop arrows what you just did with Penetration was a waist of time pretty much any arrow is gonna stop about the same in something made to stop arrows go shoot them into a tree its gonna be about the same. the only real test is on an animal and the heavy arrow will always do better when you hit what you didnt want to hit cause animals move no matter how good you are a good shot can turn into a not so good shot so its better to have as much weight as you can shoot as long as the arrow flight is good...
Thank you for doing this. I respect all of the work in tuning each arrow and attempting to keep it consistent.

Clearly not the case, there were inches of difference in every shot, heavy = slow, deer reaction = fast
