How to Quiet Your CROSSBOW!

  • This is the most popular question I get: how can I make my crossbow quieter? You can't make it "silent" in my opinion buy you can quiet it down a bit. Here I do my best to show you how much.
    In the end, I can tell you crossbows are NOT quieter than compound bows.
    This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;)
    I want to help make UA-cam the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.
    This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
    ...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The album for the current season is available wherever you download music online, and the Special Edition CD is available on Amazon.com.

    About string silencers...placement it critical. If you approach the sound problem using the heterodyning principal it can make a big difference. Placing 1 silencer 1/4 the distance from end of string to center & placing a 2nd silencer 1/3 the distance from the end of the string to center on the other side will cancel out both even and odd heterodyned frequencies stopping the string from ringing like a stringed musical instrument. I use the method on my traditional longbows & recurves. the sound goes from twang to thump.

    Good video man. In-depth, informative & well explained. Marginal effectiveness.
    There is another method to prevent a deer hearing a crossbow when fired -
    Led Zep at high volume on a 500 watt sound system.
    Guaranteed deer won't hear the crossbow

    Have shot crossbows for over 35 years. Have shot doe's and multiple bucks. Not sure why, but my experience, a doe tends to react more often than bucks do to the sound of the crossbow. I totally agree with taking shorter shots (25 yards or less in my opinion) and recommend to aim lower 1/4 of the torso height. Just because a fast crossbow can shoot flat and accurately at longer ranges doesn't mean shooting animals that far is a good idea. My experience with quietening a crossbow is mostly limited to putting the rubber spider legs on the string. It actually does two things. It makes the crossbow a little quieter, but mainly, it drastically shortens the duration of the sound, or the "twang". I think this shortened sound may be less alarming to a deer. With the rubber spider legs, instead of the long "boiiiiing", the crossbow just goes "bonk". Heavier arrow set up reduces the sound also, like you said and carries more momentum for penetration. Thanks for sharing.

      *I once owned a BARNETT compound crossbow. That one was nothing but problems... Loud, inaccurate, screws constantly vibrating loose. MY Barnett was a horrible bow. I NOW have an EXCALIBUR re-curve crossbow and I very much prefer the simpler design of EXCALIBUR Re-Curve. I can swap out the string or remove the string for off season storage without an expensive trip {or two or three or more}... to the pro-shop. My cams never go out of time or break on Excalibur... because there are no cams to fail or give aggravations. I suggest you consider Excalibur. They offer numerous models.... just pick one you like ... get some HEAVY Aluminum XX75 2219 arrows or EASTON FMJ arrows and some 150 grain broad-heads...and enjoy it. For Deer, Moose, ELK and small bears... Any Excalibur currently offered at 300 fps or faster 'advertised speed', should be plenty. Lighter arrows and lighter broad-heads will shoot faster... but, speed is not everything. DURABILITY. PENETRATION and ACCURACY are what I consider as most important.... Any speed over 220 fps is plenty enough to take deer. IF, { Yes, 'IF' } I were going after Big BEAR, Northern MOOSE, Monster ELK, African KUDU, Cape Buffalo, Northern North American Bison, ELEPHANT etc.... I might want more speed and weight... such as the new Excalibur 440 bow....with 600 to 800 grain or heavier arrows. Slash arrows {made in TEXAS} with the extra cutting edges do have an appeal. Presently, my IBEX SMF is sending a 515 grain arrow at 275 fps and penetrating very well. I find it to be quite satisfactory. The newer GRZ-2 or Micro 308 short should perform equally well and be a bit smaller for ease of transport and use.*

Everytime I shot something the bolt goes straight on thru. I'd say the newer ones are better then the old ones. Oh yeahhh I bought mine for $258 on Amazon lol it was on sale

    Great info Rich. I’m re-watching this video and enjoying it. My excalibur shoots 330 ft./s with the standard firebolt arrow and 100 grain broadhead. But from day one I’ve been shooting 150 grain bolt cutters. I added a 100 grain brass insert to my arrow. I’m going to try this set up before the bear hunt starts the spring. All my shots are 20 yards and under.
    This should reduce my crossbow speed to roughly 298 feet per second not unlike the speed of bungee. This in order to quiet down crossbow, add momentum, i’ve never had problem with Passthrough in the past. You can never over kill an animal. This will increase the ark of the arrow, does not affect me in the big picture. If I was to replace my excalibur I would not increase the speed above 360 ft./s. Model. Loaded up with more front of centre weight to increase momentum and to quiet the bow down my shooting 325 or so feet per second. I love my Vortex Excalibur. I digress thanks again for the video Rich.

    Hi Rich, the biggest cause of twang on an Excalibur crossbow is the actual rail. It’s a hollow tube and it really amplifies sound. If you were to take a piece of neoprene to the inside and stuff it in there. I stuffed about a third of the rail with it.

    Here is a tip to help check your bolts/screws. Go into your wife's finger nail polish and get her rd nail polish ( any color will do, other than, black, brown or any color that you have a hard time seeing ). After you tighten the screws up apply it and wait for it to dry ( check it regularly for cracks, if it is cracked the screws have come loose, ) so re-tighten them and repeat. ) Be careful not to get into the allen wrench or screw holes. I found that red works best.

    Great video. I'd love to see a Chrono to see what the mods due to arrow speed. What most folks don't think about is that the speed of sound is constant (it loses intensity or becomes quieter over distance but never loses speed) the arrow on the other hand loses speed quickly. As you said shorter shots are better. At 30 ft ANY sound will reach the deer at .26 sec. An arrow at 300fps takes a full second. So the deer has .74 seconds to respond. At greater distances the arrow slows and gives exponentially more time for the animal to respond. Dampening sound doesn't change that time, only banks on the fact that it won't be loud enough to spook a deer. Also would love to see the dB of simply shooting from inside a blind. That fabric will absorb a good bit of sound and would be cool to see how that stacks up to all those expensive mods. Thanks again for an awesome vid!

    Rich! Great breakdown of the subject! My nephew had a deer duck an arrow from my Matrix 335 last fall at 25ish yards. I have installed some vibration and noise dampening gear on it but deer have an incredible reaction time. I do not take shots farther than 35 yards at deer with archery gear. Too much can go wrong. Even 25 yards is a long way through the woods for an arrow or bolt.

    Great content Rich, I'm surprised u went all out after so many years of bone stock bunjie lol! I can tell u that I tried 90% of those add ons and am only left with the dissipator bars and some inner tube tied on both sides of the stirrup. I removed everything else as it really decreases speed and trajectory, I felt like their were too many variables to change the point of aim. Through my testing on my axiom I was really surprised at how little it took to shift the point of aim and am sure this applies to all bows. I guess I'm a KISS kinda guy "keep it simple stupid " lol!!! 👍👍👍😃

    Sound dampening is for us not the deer if you want a quiet weapon you need either a bow or a gun where the bullet hits before the sound reaches. However I do prefer the less twangy sound that comes from all the added gear. But if you want to silence a crossbow it’s impossible. Every thing helps but it will never be quiet.

    To test the noise level at 20 yards in front of the crossbow safely, you could put your meter at 20 yards, but actually be shooting a target at 40 yards. Having the target an additional 20 yards beyond the meter would greatly reduce the influence of the sound of the bolt hitting the target and skewing the results.
    I appreciate your videos and the effort and honesty in each of them!

    The big takeaway from this video is that there is nothing you can do to your crossbow to lengthen your effective hunting range. If the deer jumps your string at 79 decibels, it's going to do the same at 76 decibels. And whether your arrow is traveling 280 ft/s or 300 ft/s makes absolutely ZERO difference at any practical hunting distance with regards to the reaction time of the deer.

    I think the problem is you're hitting the target when the point of the exercise is what if you miss the target. If you miss then you won't have the sound of impact. The reason it's still so loud at 20 yards is you're pretty much the same distance from the target which is making the same amount of noise. You need to have the arrows/bolts sail off to land far away at a low speed.

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  3 роки тому +1

      Interesting thoughts... I think it was still accurate though, the sound at target would not change, but our readings showed the difference with and without.

    OK, before I watch this video I just want to say, Rich, that your videos are always very informative and/or entertaining as the case needs. That being said, I don't want my crossbow quieter. When a buck hears my crossbow launch a bolt in his direction, I want the sound to be so hauntingly-terrifying, so soul wrenchingly strength-draining, so mind-numbingly scary, so startlingly petrifying that the buck is reduced to a shivering , trembling furry mess, devoid of the will to run, to turn, nay to even move until the bolt takes his life. That's what I want my crossbow to do.

    Another great video! I was surprised to see the difference between the sound next to the crossbow an 20 yards away. I know the sound is very different shooting the crossbow with the gear on. I have noticed on my crossbow the speed of the arrow is also changed, unsure how much though but I know it changes. (Maybe a idea for a video before Maryland hunting or you take everything off) Good luck hunting! Be safe.

    i decreased an arrow weight, I shot a soft pine dowel out of 175lbs jag I have never seen an arrow fly so fast, it also increased the sound of the shot........
    It exploded upon hitting its second target, I would NOT suggest using lighter bolts, but they do fire.

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  5 років тому

      Yikes what did it weigh? I agree, another problem of lighter ones is the risk of dry fire. You don't have to be empty to dry fire necessarily.

      it flew great perfect and accurate at double speed but took damage and broke on second shot on hard plywood.
      I think if I really needed bolts i would use again but maybe a heavy dowel, though as you say run risk of dryfire, which is why i think the sound was so loud when i shot it.

    Has anyone ever isolated exactly where, and what parts are the major cause of noise to help you in your mission of cutting sound ? Ethical hunting rule: Restrict shots to distances that keep the projectile flight time to 1/2 second or less. That means 30 yards with traditional bow, 50 yards with compounds/crossbows, and 500 yards with your 270 Winchester.
