  • With the mist lifting on a warm still morning we catch the first train on the last operating day of 2015. The train crew are very friendly; keen we should enjoy their railway on this wonderful autumn day. We start climbing through autumn gold woods with shafts of sunshine breaking through the leaf cover creating an almost magical atmosphere, before passing through a series of tunnels, between which the line is perched on a narrow ledge, with occasional stunning views over the lake far below. We pass the tree line onto the rugged mountainside for more dramatic vistas across deep valleys and snow covered peaks. Take a seat and enjoy one of the most outstanding rides in Switzerland.
    The railway is 7.6 kilometres (4.7 mi) long and the track gauge is 800 mm (2 ft 7 1⁄2 in)
    Filmed - 25 October 2015

      Hi, this wasn't an easy railway to build, but I'm glad those early entrepreneurs risk so much to enable the general public to see what only intrepid climbers could see before the railway was built. I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride.

      Travelling by train is probably the best way to see Switzerland, There are plenty of tour companies offering rail tours around Switzerland at sensible prices. I have also toured by coach and train. Another way to experience Switzerland and its railways is to stay in Interlaken and buy a "Regional Pass Bernese Oberland" giving unlimited travel within a specified area covering many Of Switzerland's iconic railways and boat trips. Most trips are included, but travel on some private lines is at a heavily discounted rate.

      @@annealt9060 I'm pleased you enjoyed your trips to Switzerland, I visited earlier this year, just in time to ride some of the older trains, before they are replaced with new air conditioned units with no opening windows. I hope they keep running some of open carriages in the summer months, because its hard to take good photos through the glass used on modern trains. The new units are well designed and comfortable with large panoramic windows, but I'll still miss the older trains with their opening windows.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  6 років тому

      I live in the UK where massive fences are normal along railway lines, they look aweful when new and even worse at ten or more years old. Roads are really dangerous, yet they are not fenced off. I agree that reality should dictate safety measures. Another thing I have noticed about fences ... between the railway lines and the fence is always a mess, yet in most of Europe where there are no fences there is no mess. I'm guessing you don't live in the UK.

      Cheers, it would make a brilliant roller coaster, but think it think it would be a one off. The reason it should not happen is that the carriages are fitted with cog wheels as well, so it would take a really catastrophic failure to turn a rack railway into a roller coaster.

      It is interesting that countries sharing a common language still end up using different words to describe the same thing, "sleepers" and "ties" describe the same item, there are many other examples such as "hood" and "bonnet", "trash can" and "dust bin", beautiful still means the same thing both sides of the Atlantic. Many part of Canada and Switzerland are very similar, featuring high altitude glaciers and skiing. Whistler has a noticeable Swiss feel to it.

    • @b43xoit
      @b43xoit 6 років тому

      Do those wishbone sleepers add a bit of stability and rigidity compared to the normal straight-across ones? Are they particularly indicated for a cog road?

    • @samuelbhend2521
      @samuelbhend2521 4 роки тому

      @@b43xoit no. the "schynige platte railway" nearby (other end of lake brienz) is about the same age and steepness as the "brienz-rothorn railway" here and has straight metal sleepers. It's from the era around 1900 right at the beginning of tourism in our region here, when every railway was a one-off and no standardised system existed. All tourist railways here in switzerland from that era developed and use theyr very own system of cog, steam, electricity with different numbers of volt either AC/DC, one-phase (or two phase, only the kleine scheidegg to jungfraujoch railway!) etc. in our region this is the only railway with wishbone sleepers, and we've got many tourist cog-railways...

    More than 100 yrs ago, with less tech such an amazing rail route has been built. People were selfless and more hardworking then. But these days even simple flat roads are costing billions of dollars for no valid reason

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 роки тому +2

      Our forefathers had vision and a determination to see things through, they were not restricted by a health and safety culture that makes projects uneconomic before they start, add to that a plethora of regulations such as accessibility for the disabled etc ( BTW I do believe the disabled should have access where possible at a cost that does not kill the project). In the past, if someone wanted to build a railway up a mountain, it was only the physical mountain they had to conquer, today officialdom has become more of a challenge than the mountain itself. People still have vision and drive today, they will still take a gamble with their own money, it is often over regulation and the not in my backyard attitude attitude of a few people that makes projects uneconomic, a great example of this is the proposed high-speed railway from London to the North of England, it has already taken close on 20 years, cost an absolute fortune and nothing much has happen yet. In China, where government does not face constant re-election, they can just get on an build the railways. I do not propose that country's should be run in the same way as China, but somewhere in between Chinese and Western style government there is a sensible compromise that would allow things to happen, whilst adequately compensating those directly affected by new projects. Switzerland is a very democratic country and its people are sensible enough to know when projects should go ahead, they can see the big picture, hence why new transport projects both road and rail get the go ahead, there are a number of very expensive tunnels under construction or recently completed that will intimately cut both journey times and pollution, the Gotthard Base Tunnel being a good example.
