My mom recently came to visit us in Dasà, Calabria, for the first time. Since I was showing her around anyway, I decided it was a good time to take you guys behind the scenes and show you what a day in the life is like here. Eva and I are heading back "home" to the States soon, but I think this video shows why Dasà feels like the real home to me now.
Hope you enjoy the video! We'll be taking a little time off from posting videos as we travel back to the USA but we'll be back with you all soon so stay tuned!
By the way, we've helped to form a cultural non-profit here in Dasà with the goal of welcoming visitors and sharing local food traditions with people from all around the world. If you travel to Italy and feel like stopping by, the people of Dasà would love to host you! Check out www.visitdasa.com for more info!

My mothers side is from Roseto Abruzzi and my fathers side is Napoli.
I grew up in an all Italian neighborhood in Philadelphia.
My parish St Donato or in Italian San Donato was founded by St. Frances Xavier Cabrini in 1913 for our school, the Church 1910.
To attend San Donato School you had to be Italian.
The reason was in the old days when Italians came to America they were discriminated against, so we had to build our own church and school.
Nobody can build better than Italians, it was a beautiful thing.

The little girl, Caterina, said some very important things about the small village of Dasà, like a little bit of all small villages in southern Italy, where the people are all united. They help each other. In case of need there is always someone ready to help you. Unlike a big city where even the neighbor is a “big stranger” (sometimes he doesn't even say good morning to you), everyone on their own way.

So many emotions as I, too came from a similar village in Calabria and immigrated to USA with my parents 57 years ago. But the tears started flowing when Gianni spoke my beloved Calabrese dialect, referring to the freshly picked figs “mo i pighiamma.” I had the same emotional reaction when you and Eva called Mama Rosa to ask how she makes certain dishes and she and Papa Turi gave their instructions “in dialetto.” 😭 Thank you, Harper and Eva for capturing and sharing all these beautiful moments and traditional recipes that stir up so many personal memories for me. 💚🤍❤

I am literally drooling at that fig. My Oratinese grandmother, like many Italians in the early 20th Century, immigrated to New York, but when she went to live in Northern California with my aunt and uncle, she was so very happy. She could lovingly grow everything she wanted and one of the best things about visiting was having those figs. She made an amazing jam out of them as well.
EDIT: They better be restoring that castle and not tearing it down.

    • @bethb5915
      @bethb5915 7 місяців тому +6

No, they're not going to tear down a historic site. They have strict laws about historic buildings. If you're refurbishing a home in a town's historic center, you often can't change the size of the windows - or paint the house a color that's not acceptable to the commune - because they want to preserve the historic architecture and look. And that's for homes that "only" go back a few hundred years, so I can't imagine them destroying an ancient castle.

I just went from Italy to Paris and there is no comparison for me, Italy (where my family is from) is much friendlier and just as beautiful. I'm an Italian chef and learned to make pasta this way from my grandmother (from Modena) and later went to a culinary school and lived in Italy in the 60"s. I missed Italy and always told my wife stories about my time living with family there that I finally got to take her there . I lived for a time with my cousin Silvio Berlusconi and his family in the early 60's way before his becoming the Premier. I was planning to visit him but he passed just before we got to Italy. If you've ever been on the historic Old Columbia River Highway in Oregon you can see a lot of stone work that resembles what Harper filmed in and around Dasà, especially the opening shots. That's because when they planned and built the highway starting in 1913 they brought in Italian masons to do the stonework. That style of stonework remained common in public works projects in Oregon clear through the depression.

I am Italian/America brought up as Italian in America within a Italian family that never spoke Italian, crazy right. Being a Italian is in my heart. I had left America at 18 years old into the Air Force. I spent most of my life in Asia hence not speaking Italian as I should. I made many trips to Italy and after seeing this video it made me emotional to know what I am missing. You have done the most remarkable job with this video Harper thank you very much. I hope to return to Italy as soon as I can.
God Bless both you and Eva and all family and friends
    Antonio

I love this vlog Harper and Eva. It makes me nostalgic for my Sicilian family's Sundays at my bisononna's casa. Play bocce, drinking the strongest "Dago "red wine ever made, and eating my Zias', nonna's, and mom's food all day. We sang, played cards (canasta), ate, napped, played, ate some more. Perfect days. Thank you.

Believe it or not this reminds me of days gone by in Brooklyn at some of the family gatherings.
Days with sheets on the dining room table spread with dough and hand made pasta specialties being prepared and the men getting the coals just right for the sausage, lamb and peppers. Lots of home made wine to go around and long nights of laughter and singing. Summer nights in Brooklyn.

Isn’t it hell having your heart between two "homes". We live it every day for the last seventeen years. Greece or America, both have their pluses and minuses. The food, fresh figs just off of the tree, peaches, pears, fresh tomatoes and eggplants, you won’t find that in the states unless you live in the warmer parts of the country. But on the other hand where do you find the latest and greatest in technology, ease in having access to almost any equipment or kitchen tools.
Still there is nothing like family. We have it all along the Mediterranean coast!

Seeing how the families interact and all sit at a table together is awesome and kinda depressing when I think that that isn’t as common here in America anymore, at least not in my family.
