Iced Eagle Rescue on Lake Michigan

- Some know that in my ‘spare time’, I volunteer at the raptor rehabilitation center in Empire … Wings of Wonder(WoW) …
By fortune or misfortune, an eagle that somehow had the inconvenience of coming into contact with Lake Michigan during the recent polar vortex was in trouble. Finders had been watching 4 eagles eating something out on the edge of the ice. Three of the eagles eventually flew away but the fourth remained, and it was immediately apparent that something was wrong. So, they(the finders) contacted Wings of Wonder where I was holding down the fort while the director, Rebecca Lessard was making her own Polar Vortex sidestep by visiting her grand baby in Dallas, TX! I called volunteer Chris Johnson to see if he had some time open for a possible adventure and he bit!
The accompanying video is a spotty story of the rescue and rehabilitation as I was there to rescue/assist and not to photo’g, but I couldn’t resist getting some clips when the timing was right and my help was not needed. The first segment I was wading amongst ice chunks, trying to keep my footing, an eye on the eagle/Chris and get some video ... sorry for the 'bobblyness'.
The eagle was sitting on the edge of an ice shelf about 100 feet from shore. I donned insulated chest waders, a PFD and slowly plodded out into the water amongst the large floating ice blocks to corral the eagle with hopes that he would move towards shore where Chris was waiting with blanket and thick handling gloves.
We were able to keep him on the shoreline ice and convinced him to go ashore so we could gather him(and his 8?” ball of tail ice) to take back to WoW to assist in the defrosting process. It worked and the only close casualty was the newfound leak in my waders ... at crotch level(of course) … luckily Chris was right where he needed to be and had the presence of mind to intercept the guy who seemingly was looking for an assist at the same time we were offering one!
Getting the eagle back to WoW, we set him up over night in a crate near a heat vent hoping the freezerlings would let loose, but alas, the big one did not ... so, the next morning, Jim Manley joined the crew to help with the next step of ‘forced defrostation’ ... warm tap water directly applied to the ice ball.
They were able to remove the ice beast and it was apparent he was pretty happy to have his discharge chute operating again as he was making up for lost time … with cleared out piping he gently accepted his first free meal very gently from forceps.
Sunday morning the eagle was moved to the outside 100 foot flight pen where he finished his full recovery. He is flying perfectly, preening and certainly enjoying his daily free meals of rabbit, rat and fish dinners.
Wings of Wonder is inviting the public to his release on Sunday, Feb 10th, 2019 at 4pm, from the Suttons Bay High School parking lot, 500 South Elm Street, Suttons Bay. The release was a grand success! you can see it here: • Iced Eagle Rescue on L...

me and my uncle came across this exact same scenario back in 2005 up north Manitoba, we brought the eagle back to camp . thawed him out after 3 hrs we opened the door and off he went, the next day we were out fishing our nets, and the eagle came back and circled are camp a number of times saying thank you to us... great job guys. I remember the feeling well on saving the life of a bald eagle. cheers.
Wow!
Thanks 👍
Thousand bucks says the eagle wasn't "thanking" you... more likely he was keeping an eye on the only animals that had ever been able to catch him... keep your enemies closer and all that
Awesome 👏! God bless you people
Real mam u guys are heroes and i respect such people alot...
That eagle's friends are never going to believe his stories of abduction.
Lol, yes.
Fox Mulder to the rescue!!!!!
guys, i swear, they held me down on my back and spread my legs and played with my butt. i swear this is true!
Joking aside, every action leaves a mark. We might be building paradise on Earth with each of these tiny acts of caring. Animals have various ways of transmitting experience to others.
Consider how sometimes animals that are as wild and shy as can be, avoiding humans whenever possible, may nonetheless actively seek them out when they are in big trouble.
At that point, what have they got to lose lol.
It's always remarkable to see wild creatures realize people are helping them
Whoever saved this beautiful animal... you are awesome!
👍👍
I like how, when you're feeding him with the tongs, he takes the first one quickly and defensively, and by the third one he's super casual about it.
He's now fully recovered and demanding the wine list with every meal.
@@herbert9241 He had better get what he deserves.
Unfrozen, his ass became smart...
I think he scraped himself on the tongs first one😊
@@herbert9241 LMAO
Considerable amount of skill, knowledge, experience needed to know to approach an eagle and safely rescue it. My respect!!!!
but why i cant see, that they let him free...?
the release link is in the info box above
THEY DIDN4T RESCUE?? THEY STOLE IT FOR THEMESEVLES,,, FIRST make a profite from video then whatever they want to do with the animal,
@@naseratiii are you stupid, The eagle could of died by starvation or gotten murdered by bigger predators since it couldnt fly away with the huge ice piece it had stuck in between its legs
@@PurplePhantomZ ye sure you're right but they didn't send the bird free in the end,,so my little brain says something fishy is going on,,you know simple calculation ;)
Baby must be so relieved to get the chunk of ice off his behind, get fed and eventually released. Your efforts of saving these beautiful and majestic creatures is outstanding!!
You have my respect
It’s not a baby if it’s got a white head.
I like how saved animals are: “I was about to die, and all of a sudden strange creature saves me and gives me food”
Sounds like a true story of some people too.
❤
I think they know. My grandpa saved a bird in Stevensville Montana. He and a man named Dale and his kids nursed it back to health. Then they let it go. Every year when the bird would migrate, it would stop off at Dale's house to say hello. True story. In fact, Dale put this story in one of his books.
Yea all that complaining about humans but when did any tiger or zebra come to rescue a human in need?
I don't think there's any actual reasoning going on there. Just moment to moment impressions.
That eagle seemed so confused but then slowly understood you were trying to help him. After that he thrived.
As scared as he was I’m SURE he knew you were trying to help ... he could’ve been flapping and stuff but he wasn’t ... Thankyou so much for helping a creature
Wev and npc please shut up, you both are morons and yes what oven did say is a fact. Now stop arguing over a youtube comment section.
See the people claiming animals are smart are basing this off of there pets fetching toys for them, just so you know the key word in Oven’s sentence is “wild”.
Payge wow with all that ice he was dead for sure 😣😢😢😢
Thank God the nice man found him .. thank u old man .. you’re a hero ✌🏻
@Wes Rogers "Higher IQ than me" alright bud shut up and go to sleep.
@@void8579 - Humans are animals, so tell me again how animals can't be smart or understand...?
There are plenty of intelligent and clever species, claiming wild animals cannot understand or think is ignorant.
Even plant life has perception, reactions to surroundings as well as forms of communication.
It never ceases to amaze me, that moment when a wild animal recognizes we're attempting to make things right. That moment of recognition, when they allow our help, surrendering & accepting whatever is going to happen. The communication between human & bird is all done subliminally, using only our intentions.
We could do better ourselves, human to human, if we would only try.
So beautifully expressed 🙏🌿 blessings!
It’s in shock...
Feeding was the moment I noticed. Third times the charm :)
@@TainaElisabeth I hate to say it but I believe that to be the case as well. The ice ball had to go but that bird could have died or miscarried little birds from the anxiety :(
@@TainaElisabeth still glad the bird is saved though
What a gorgeous bird. Well done to all involved with the rescue!
Eagle:”ok you don’t have to pay taxes for 6 years now. thank you”

This one is excellent!!
How US-untypical. 😜
I like that idea. Rescue an eagle in the U.S., and live tax free.
@Happybidr - Or rescue a bear and just live free. 😜
I rescued a baby bald eagle many years ago. He had an injured and infected foot to where he couldn't hunt and couldn't eat. He was taken to OWL Raptor Sanctuary and healed. He wasn't ever fit to hunt again though, so he became an Ambassador Eagle, educating the public on eagles. His name was Grover.
Was so his died?

Whoever it is with the perseverance, thank you for rescuing this magnificent bird ❗️
"Grandpa, can you tell us the story of how you de-iced an eagle again?"
Yes right after I tell you the story about how i kept it caged and never released it back into the wild where it can have freedom.
There are many reasons not to release a bird. It could’ve imprinted (unlikely considering it’s an adult), it could still be injured somehow and not able to hunt normally in the wild, or it could be in therapy to regain it’s muscles that it lost while recovering. These people know what they’re doing.
Replay the video, son.
@@MyCreeperkid he did release it. In the video he put a pole saying it. You should probably have checked before writing... :P
@@MyCreeperkid I love how people don't watch the full video and assume things.

Спасибо, что спасли. Какая же красивая птица!
Man what a beautiful job on that bird!
Just when I start to lose all faith in humanity, you come along.
@Laura Dent: That's what occurred to me, too.
There are plenty of good folks, good deeds & events, at all times.
We must remember & remain mindful of that - if we are to stay balanced.
I see this comment all the time. You know, Laura, people in general are good people. Of all the people you know, how many of them are actually out to ruin other people's lives or destroy the world. Not every one has the opportunity to save and document a heroic act like this, but every time you let a honey bee out of the car window instead of smashing it with your shoe, or slow your car to allow a squirrel to get across the road, you save a little piece of the world - and we all do it. If you want to see the bright side of your fellow humans, just look for the small things.
.... hm ... of course .... there are always exceptions to the rule ....
I couldn’t tell what happened to the eagle
@Antje Bower no
Looks like you won his trust rather quickly. Excellent work.
Sure, it was a great work. But the introductory music reminded me of "Where Eagles Dare"!!
From bottom of my heart many many thanks to you for saving them.I wish we had more people like you and our planet would be the most beautiful place to live in harmony with nature.

I was fortunate enough to help rescue and release a golden eagle many years ago, I was the one holding the legs as the only other freed it from it's wire entanglement. It flew about 30 feet away and gathered itself for about 10 minutes, it then let out the loudest eagle screech thank you I have ever heard and took wing, will never forget that day. It is a wondrous experience to be so close to such great wild creatures and then see them freed, great work guys!
Whiskeysuds Jackwagon God bless you
The only encounters I've had with Golden Eagles have involved the hood and grille of my vehicles. Two different ones. It's like hitting a bowling ball. Mashes the crap out of the car. (Not to mention the birds.) I don't know why they hate me enough to keep making suicide swoops right in front of me at speed.
@@mqbitsko25 , i find this a bit upsetting, are you for reals?
It sang for u to thank u!
What release? It wasn't released.
Thank you for rescuing this eagle! Kudos!

Молодцы !!!Спасибо вам вы спасли птицу, успехов и здоровья.
Nothing moves me more than animals in need getting help by humans. I really loves animals and I get a chance to regain my loves to humans for a while.
"pe.sthim" Agreed. However remember that wild animals should not be made into pets. There is a wildlife group here in NY and only when a bird or other animal is too handicapped to be released back to the wild do they bring it to a sanctuary in NJ. If the animal recovers enough, then she or he is set free to be in the wild again.
yep nothing softens me up like seeing animals being helped, or doing it oneself
I especially love the rare videos where an animal approaches humans... you know they are in deep shit when they do that, but the fact that they even consider coming to us an option when in need is amazing.
Magnificent work to save a beautiful Bald Eagle from a dire predicament. Kudos to Wings of Wonder and all rehabbers who are dedicated to caring for injured wildlife. You are true heroes!
Thank you kindly, for your recognition. We volunteer but work tremendously to keep our wildlife safe, and thriving.

How you know
@@Tom-yg7mi, the eagle made no attempts to fight or get free from the men that were helping him. Animals are far smarter than most humans.
@@richardcline1337 No, outside of select sea life, not even the smartest animal is as smart as 95% of humans. You don't need to shit on humans to praise animals
he was unable to fly or fight back, its pretty obvious that it was scared and humans are much smarter than 90% of animals
He knows you're helping him. He is laying there on his back in your arms while you run warm water over the ice attached to tail feathers. Beautiful.

Amazing rescue, and what a beautiful animal! God bless you ❤️
I'm having an eagle rescue marathon. Just impossible not to love these. So heartwarming!
Eagle's journal: Humans are beyond weird. When the two males first came for me, I assumed they were hunting me. And I was sure my life would end.
Instead, they put me in a box, keep me warm, get all the snow off my rump, and feed me before release.
It has become obvious to me that humans do not work in the same rules that I do. And I soppose I am grateful for the help.

That is an INSANE amount of ice on that bird's tail. How did he end up with a bowling ball for a butt? 😛
Did you not notice it was yellow?
It was a big ol' piss ball frozen to his Eagle sack. Seen it 1000 times.
I lived in this region for a little while will never forget a certain mid-March "thunder blizzard" which brought down thousands of trees and disconnected energy for about a week. The snow was coming down so fast that you couldn't clear one side of the windshield before the other side was covered again with a heavy layer of wet, sticky snow. The birds have to hunt and protect their nestlings in the thick of that and it seems likely that their tails would tend to attract a load of ice and snow. If the temperatures don't allow for an immediate thaw, of course the "golf ball" will turn into a "baseball" will turn into a "bowling ball." Nice rescue!!!
@@kitchfacepalm it was a joke. Clearly.

Having spent more than 30 years working with eagles here in Maine I thought I'd seen everything but this is a first for me! Much credit to those involved in this rescue without which this eagle would almost certainly perished. With all the bad stuff focused on these days it's always good to see humans doing good. Now if only we can get Congress Critters to follow this example...
If we could only get TRUMP to follow this example but he would have let our National Bird die. He prefers the Russian eagle.
Wow! What an amazing creature. Thanks to all the rescuers for doing what they do.
Human superiority is not in its capacity for dominance, but in caring, living, respecting and above all teaching and understanding that we are part of this wonderful world ... congratulations.
The pride and strength this animal reflexes is amazing ...
A grown Bald eagle well in its mid life and or later life can easily take on a wolf or dear, with caution of course. But naturally, any animal on the ground has a tendency to make a run for it when there is something that big coming from above. It's a missile, you know...
So happy to see a good outcome for this eagle. The past couple years my wife and I have been watching different live eagle cams and there have been some tragic event. As I tell her, these are the things that happen in nature. Thanks for sharing this with us.
