The reason the Numidian guy had so many bodyguard is due to his high personal security, if someone has traits that improve personal security he gains bodyguards and if he has traits that reduce personal security he loses bodyguards.

There's actually a lot of stuff he doesn't seem to know, like for example pressing backspace/telling the unit to stop causes hoplites to redeploy their spears if enemies getting too close caused them to switch to a sword. The unit will then push back enemies with the spears and they'll deal the extra phalanx damage.

Dude you gotta stop having 3 narrow formations of troops when you're trying to kill the cav at around 9 minutes in. It gives the heavy cav a chance the bowl the infantry over and get to the flanks of the phalanx instead of a charge.
Just have the phalanx taking up the street braced 4 or 5 ranks deep, it'll chew the cavalry and you can use the hastati and principes projectiles from behind.

Arcani are amazing for assaulting walls. You can chew through 3 or 4 units of infantry and lose maybe 3 or 4 guys. Archers on walls are a bit more dicey, but if you can attack them directly before engaging other units you can get through even Pharaohs bowmen only losing 2 or 3.

  • @WarCollider
    @WarCollider 7 років тому +4

21:00 I think the problem you're having is that, instead of having the hoplite unit take the brunt of the cavalry charge (where they'd do the most damage to the cavalry) with the lighter infantry going around the sides, you have the light infantry take the full brunt of the heavy cavalry while the hoplites are left at an awkward angle leaving them completely useless.
Basically, take what you're doing in these traps (which seem to end up with your units being killed most of the time) with the light infantry and the hoplites, and switch them around.

I think I recall, skirmishers (like velites) actually get a bonus vs elephants and chariots, I guess they are sort of the same class of unit), funny thing is that, I think the bonus also carries over in melee combat. (unless that was patched out)

In my game of rome total war, I basically inverted your strategy. Which is fitting, as I started it after yours.
I started as the Julii in a "quick" game to unlock the Iceni because head-throwing is awesome. It has devolved into an epic slugfest between me and usually 3 other factions at a time, usually in 3 different fronts (stupid senate) while the Scipii and Brutii work together to fight the great empires of the east. Temples to Jupiter everywhere, lots of mercenaries, and half of House Julii are Cato Incarnate. Literally everything west of Rome is mine, most of what's north & south, and so far north-east I've got a dedicated anti-Amazon front. I'm playing nice with the senate to play for time to finish my wars and expand as much as possible, but the Scipii have a lot of populist support and are hated by the senate while I'm considered tolerable (perks of putting temples to Jupiter literally everywhere). Considering the number of stacks in Rome proper while they are at war, they seem to be preparing to try and over-throw the republic. Yes, the Ai appears to be going for the victory condition.
    Other fun things of note:
I've made a city in the Saharrah. Not a town, a full city that my faction leader is hiding out in for RP reasons. Rome has taken a worthless pile of sand and made it into a (small) metropolis. Why? Because they could.
I have two units of war elephants. I have no idea where the senate got the first unit, but the second were Saharan Mercs.
Carthage holed up on the same Island they did in this game, because I didn't realize it was it's own settlement.
Southern Iberia has had more rebellions than anywhere, 3. Two were Carthaginian, the other was Spartacus. The last was the most dangerous army I have every faced on the field of battle.
I've only used enslave once, just after Spartacus's rebellion. I just couldn't deal with the revolts for the first time in the game. Jupiter is that good a god.

Had probably my closest ever (victorious) battle outside of Alesia when at one point about 2/3rds of my army was running away, with a +2 moral general on the field no less. Said general has a -1hp trait (yay...) but was just about able to turn it around with the help of 3 units of Archer Auxilia and a couple of mauled units that held their ground.

You can actually still get elephants as Rome using the oliphaunt cheat that spawns Yubtseb Elephants.
Their description in the game is: "These mysterious creatures from the middle principalities of farthest Terra Nova are the children of G'nitek'ram, the God of Shiny Things That Man Does Not Need But Desires Anyway. Dark and foul are the ceremonies that summon them; great and scary are their tusks; terrible is their gaze; unwashed are their riders; cruel and unforgiving their masters! Flee in terror! Run for the hills!"
Hint: Read Yubtseb and G'nitek'ram backwards :D

Carriots are listed as heavy cavalry so I assume normal spear men do get a bonus against them. However, the the reason carriots tend to survive attacking groups of infantry is because they simply kill most infantry in their surroundings before the infantry can hurt them, thus I don't think that bonus actually matters anyway. What does help the normal spear men is that their range is slightly longer than normal infantry, so that might just swing an encounter in their favour.

There is also something about Eastern Spearmen, namely that running a campaign or mini campaign were you use only them for combat would be brave and daring fun!

Once you have the highest city level in one of the Italian territories and build the proper governor's building it automatically triggers the Reforms. This is almost always Patavium due to its growth.

Apparently spearmen are strong against chariots, as chariots still count as cavalry in that case, a head-on charge against spearmen will stop the chariots in their tracks, just not as effectively as a phalanx

In order to become "virtus" in RTW, a character has to consistantly complete missions for the Senate or bribe a bunch of people.
Which is funny since it's a requirement for the, "Augustus," honorific.

There is one infantry level above the Pretorian Cohort, and that is the Urban Cohort. I think they come in either from the top tier barracks, or from a specialist building

I don't play a lot of Rome total war but I do play Medieval 2 and the one thing that I realised is that siege towers are a great way to funnel your units into a small area to die while the ladders allow units to spread out more evenly and gives a more steady stream of units, while the siege towers lets you have a nice first strike by grouping up at first if that fails it just becomes a slow weak stream only allowing 1 to 2 units coming out of the tower at the same time in the same place surrounded by the enemy but I do believe the ladders in Rome TW let your units fall off the wall so that is also a downside.

Jon, three spearmen attacked for every single Hastati that tried to hop down onto the walls. Three spearmen means 24 damage cumulative (assuming all three hit, which a staggered opponent would be easy to hit).
    Yeah, it's a shredder.

have you ever encountered the issue where the enemy will just sit there? i get it especially on bridge battles. set one up where i had 300 spartan hoplites (yes, 300.) against a whole army of fully upgraded heavy cavalry. the cavalry sat on the other side of the bridge, and refused to cross. until i moved across they didnt do anything. i even trid leaving it running for a while, on full time speed, nothing.

Strategy has more forms than just war tactics. Also the game cheats in favor of the factions in the auto- resolve for other territories, all Jon does is even the playing field. Which on Very Hard still might not be enough. He could've done much much more to sabotage them. Like quitting out of battle to cause autolosses to both factions and having a spy open the gates meaning he'd gain the city instead of the faction. etc etc.

    • @Bimon1234567
      @Bimon1234567 7 років тому

Well, since he feels the need to do what he does for whatever reason, maybe he shouldn't play on Very Hard.

He also likes showing off different things. This is an entertainment channel after all. He explained the reason he does all of this in the early videos.
Perhaps you shouldn't be watching and should go elsewhere instead? Go play the game on your own so you'll be happy that someone is playing the game exactly how you want, hmmm?

23:55 wrong, all cities growth rate depends on their size, for example a large city will have the same growth rate as a tiny town but if it drops far below the population required for its upgrade (12000 for large city) then growth will go up depending on how far it drops.
carthage starts off as a city so it will get to the requirements sooner than other cities

  • @McNubbys

You need to flank with ladders, so you can catch them in the rear with the siege tower troops :D
