The killer stood in the chamber of the Last Pharaoh, knife in hand. It was late, far past midnight, the whole town of Petra sound asleep. It wasn't hard to find the Pharaoh; a quick glance at the horses outside this inn told him exactly where he needed to go. Of course he would be in the largest room; he was "king" was he not? The Pharaoh was not asleep. He sat on the bed, the fireplace roaring and goblet of wine in his hand. "I know you've come to kill me," he said, taking a sip. "I see Julianus won't grand me the honor of a death in battle. Well, Good Roman," The Pharaoh turned around; his eye makeup was running down his face and his lip still had a quiver. But his face was firm, the decision in his mind had been made. "We ruled these great sands once. As a people we prospered, our culture older than your precious Rome's foundations. Our lands were burned and soiled, our slaves escaped, and yet we didn't just survive, we *thrived.* Then you come in, conquering and extending yourselves for no other reason than greed. You burn cities, ruin lives, and for what? More land that you will neglect? Gold that you will spend on bribes? An empire that will turn on itself long before any foreign army steps on your shores? I don't care that I won't die in battle; it's more embarrassing that this once great land will be ruled by the likes of you." The killer didn't care, his expression not changing. He stepped forward, once, twice, and thrust his knife into the heart of the Pharaoh. "Et tu, Brutii," the last King of Egypt said, a smile on his lips.
Thanks! I always loved the ways 4X games manage to tell your story entirely by your choice, and allow you to take advantage and spin masterful tales. I always loved reading After-Action-Report style things on the Total War Forums and learning of other's experiences, especially since I have never been too good at Total War games myself. And this run in particular has had some great stories; I'd love to learn about the Eastern Spearmen who managed to hold the line through two units of Principes, or how Oppios Victor felt when he managed to lose his hold on being leader of Rome twice.
Same here. I've heard people say they don't enjoy these games because they feel monotonous and they all generally have the same goal (conquest), but the thing I've always loved about these games is that while you do generally work towards the same goal, there are so many interesting events and stories that happen during that journey. I know some players typically try to min-max everything without really paying attention to details like the traits and retinue, but that's the best part. You get to see the characters develop throughout the game based on where they are and what they do, and it really helps for role-playing and similar things. And yeah, the AARs you can find for big strategy games (Total War, Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, etc.) are a lot of fun to read! You learn new strategies while also getting to enjoy an interesting story. And no worries, I'm definitely not the best at these games either, though I still have a lot of fun with them. As for the story of the Eastern Spearmen, well, your tale of the assassin and the Pharaoh (again, so awesome that a single moment in the game can make for such a great story!) was a delight to read, so I say give it a go! ;)
Julianus Scapula You had 2 halves of the names of the 2 greatest Roman generals! How did you end up so bad? Heh, you clearly take it from your mothers side of the family...
So Julii have taken out Gaul, Scipii have taken out the Carthaginians and meanwhile the Brutii have taken out the Greek Cities, Macedon, Pontus, Thrace and Egypt while now about to take out Dacia. And the Seleucids died to everyone ages ago like they always do 😂

it's amazing that Julianus Vatinius could have been a Quaestor or an Aedile at his young age since he should have to be 30 for Quaestor and 36 for Aedile
I feel like the last remaining Pharaoh of Egypt with his drunken uncle and his pet idiot would probably have made a good Blackadder revival series based on his life (if he weren't just assassinated)
I think it was Napoleon that was the low-point of the city. Empire wasn't the best, but in more than one respect it was actually very engaging. It really felt like you were fighting in an entire world. You could be battling the Dutch for control of the West Indies, and at the same time the Dutch attack your Indian colonies and destroy them. It felt like a world, and like you were managing it all. Napoleon was boring European politics.
I don't know, I've been playing Rome 2 Emperor edition and it's pretty great. I never saw how awful it may have been at launch but it is damn fun now. Especially playing as the barbarians. Edit: I will say though I prefer the world map of this first game. It's just much cleaner and nicer than the new engine games. More vibrant and peaceful. Music is great too.
That whole Egypt Scenario was likely because they had a Prince who hadn't come of age in Petra, so when you took it, the Last Egyptian Pharaoh was killed off.
The single most important comment of that battle speech from Spurius the Ugly and you missed it, Jon. "Three quarters of their entire force stands against us!" Three. Quarters. Of their army. So yeah, they have nothing left. They are strategically insignificant to the British.
I really wish you would keep in more of the battle. I think a lot of people would like to hear the speeches at the beginning as well. Plus, at times, I can hardly tell what is going on in the battle becuase it would skip to a time where almost the entire enemy army was defeated. And, I'm not really sure about other people, but I wouldn't mind seeing more of what you do in the cities along with actually seeing the cities in game some more. Just a few thoughts to make it a bit longer. I still love the video, though.
I propose an "Animal Farm" playthrough. Only cavalry, elephants, pigs, and hounds. With humans being used in the form of spies. You start off with only animals but (spoiler alert?) you can use humans later on, like in the book.

Jon would have to change play style! Managing with crappy units, hitting in waves, so they exhaust the superior legions. The Battle of Lydda (The climatic battle between Julianus Vatinius and the Egyptian Pharoah-in-waiting Apries Philometor) was the Egyptian's final attempt to regain the initiative. It failed, spectacularly, to the point historians question the mindset of the Egyptian commander as to why he even thought he could succeed by that point. It should be noted, however, that there would be no peace between the Brutii and the Egyptians. Apries thus took up the mindset, explained by Julianus in his later years, "To be fortunate, one must be bold". Thus, with his back against the wall, Apries decided it was all or nothing. I know I have mentioned it already but I guess you must have forgotten to do it. The faction graphs would be interesting to see! But maybe you're saving that for the end or something
Jon. Since you did study this era. I am curious if there are any accounts from the common foot soldiers within the families of the main roman families when the civil war occurred. Do you think they hesitated when they were fighting other romans ?
Fantastic gameplay and commentaries! How do you get to fly around over enemy forces with the camera? I have seen Combinations of keys like shift + ins and stuff like that but nothing works for me. Thank you.

""""""""Helping""""""""
41:30 thats mainly northern germany with a little denmark not the other way around
What a Cliffangher!
I know I have mentioned it already but I guess you must have forgotten to do it. The faction graphs would be interesting to see! But maybe you're saving that for the end or something
Missed chance to cry "Deploy the bacon!"
Watching this back it’s comical how often you try to make your Guys run and you click too many times and make them walk
I went through my history books and replaced all mentions of Caesar and Octavianus with Julianus Vatinius.
Getting some sleep today? Nah...
I think the legendary pigs just won that first fight
I always hit Rome first, wipe out the SPQR armies by taking the city in one turn,
Jon. Since you did study this era. I am curious if there are any accounts from the common foot soldiers within the families of the main roman families when the civil war occurred. Do you think they hesitated when they were fighting other romans ?
I got a quick question for anyone that may see this. What would a full army of Attack Dogs look like and how effective would that be?
Probably not overly effective, one it depends on the opponents they're being released on but I feel they wouldn't do overly well possibly.
Fantastic gameplay and commentaries! How do you get to fly around over enemy forces with the camera? I have seen Combinations of keys like shift + ins and stuff like that but nothing works for me. Thank you.
Surreal: I took some deaths probably from friendly archers. The 60 pigs that got turned to bacon
oh my god jon i swear i could almost imagine the smug look on your face at this moment 8:38 :-)
two trailer park generals go round the outside, round the outside. round the outside.
