I had to pause the video and say, that angle grinder in the vise was an awesome bit of advice for someone that doesn't have a belt sander/grinder.
Thanks Erick I think you have better control with your work peice this way. I was hoping to be able to grind the bevels
Alright this was the best instructional video for people to get started I’ve seen. Thanks for your time in filming this one. I’ve been working through issues I’ve had with really cheap equipment like a 1x30 and your tips with the angle grinder and beveling jig set up are coming in clutch.
Thank you so much for narrating and not playing Music
This was fantastic.
Great video man. Fantastic tips. I always tell my Son, the sign of a great craftsman, mechanic, handyman etc. It’s not what’s in his toolbox. It’s is the problem solving, to come up with a solution with tools you have on had. A creative mind is the best tool.
Keep up the fantastic work. Looking forward to your next project.
Those are great words of wisdom!
Great videos dude very helpfull
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Love the vids! Keep them going.
Thank you Isaiah! I plan on it! See you on the next one! Cheers
hey dude i am a thirteen year old knife maker your vids are awesome and have helped me alot
Your amazing again
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Always awesome brother good job 👏
Thank you!
Those feather plunges are SPIFFY. Nice work
Thank you! I actually found it easier and more accurate to do it this way rather than on my 2 by 72 grinder
The file jig is like a great tip you earned my sub with your excellent work keep it up buddy
Thank you! Glad to have you here with us!
@@Aleeknives what do you recommend for a “budget friendly” belt sander im new to this hobby I got into it because nobody makes a knife I want so When you want it done right your do it yourself oh and btw you make some beautiful knives like dang lol
Man I got by with the harbor freight 1x30 for a year but really I should have just saved my money for a 2x72! Housemade.us is the best deal around 100% for sure!
The file jig might have just changed my life, thank you for being a genius.
I definitely subbed
Love this!
Great video, glad for the content!!
Thanks Rob! Are you making knives?
@@Aleeknives
Yes my first one, just like you are doing with hand tools and a angle grinder! Many mistakes but still loving it !
Man I have made over 100 knives and I made mistakes on this one🤣😂
Great video you got a new sub
From Calgary ,Canada.Paul and family God bless
Thank you Paul! Glad to have you here! Cheers
Hand builds are always good to see, many people go for something much simpler, I think this is better myself, not to complex but enough to make it a challenge and interesting.
That is exactly what I am going for! A lot of guys making knives but I wanted to step it up and show that you can make an Awesome knife with hand tools!
I subbed. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Scott! I am glad you joined us on the channel! Are you making knives?
Awesome video, thanks for all the info. 👍 you help to inspire beginners.
I hope so! That is my plan, thanks for the compliments
thanks bro 🎩🎩
Very wecome!
I love how we all find flaws in our methods. Always seems intuitive that it'll work just fine,,until it doesn't. Great build!
Right😁 thanks Rodger!
I’m about halfway through your video and I have to say that you are quickly becoming my most favorite knife maker. You have great people skills.
Thank you John!
Dude that's incredible. I knew it was going to make mine look like poopoo. Lol I'll never let then stand next to each other
I guess in fairness though, mine is the first one I ever made. Oh and brw, Since you love the file gig so much, let's work a trade. Send me your 2×72 and I'll send you my files? Whatcha think?? Awesome video man. I hope plenty other people thinking about making a knife find your channel
😂🤣 it was really hard to file in bevels knowing my gri design where there!
Lol I bet
Easy peezy, great information. Gives the chance to practice without all the fancy tools. I love it, Thank you.
So true!
I subbed on your CuMai video series, but as a beginner knife maker I find these types of videos incredibly helpful
Thanks beer baron! Remember if you jave questions feel free to hit me up!
wow nice👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Love this!! I just started the journey to become a knife maker. For nothing more than the satisfaction of making something all my own. Just built a 2x72 and I’m now practicing. I look forward to finishing something. Thanks for the inspiration!!! I subbed!!
Brilliantly simple!
Thank you!
I subbed! Great video! I'm learning quite a bit. Thank you
Thank you! Glad to have you here on the channel!
That beveling jig is awesome.great set up. And Angle grinder in vise set up is genius. I love beautiful clean grind lines on bevel. Dagger is one of my favourite knife. U did a fabulous work double edged bevels raised central ridge line look mind blowing.👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you! That was a solid compliment compliment I never from one of my oldest fans! Thank you for being a vital part of this group!
Nice
Thank you! 🤜💥 💥 💥 💥 🤛
I subbed. I love this as I’m looking to give this a try. They fact that you leave the mistakes in the video is the best part to help guys like me troubleshoot and fix it.
Thank you, I'm just a normal dude making knives to man
I didn't have any black duct tape left for the file so I cheated and used silver tape. No I didn't ... I used the 2x72 instead lol. Building a 26" "Gladiator" for my son. Daggers are fun getting both side symmetrical. Waiting on the handle video. Great video so far.
Thanks Ron! Did you see my Gladius build?
@@Aleeknives Yes and now I hate you ! lol It cost me $2800 for my PM25 mill I am waiting on delivery for bolsters and pommels.

I subbed. Love ur videos. Good practical tips that are very helpful.
Awesome Steve! Glad to help
Fantastic part 1! Very encouraging. You look and act a lot like your dad.
I will take that as a huge compliment Marc! My dad is the most amazing man in my life! I look up to him everyday of my life striving to be like him and also better him where I can!
Lol, I don't know if I'd miss filing filing, but I still have my jig I made 10 years ago,
It is a pretty calm method
I subbed, honestly very informative and innovative can't wait to see more and start my own builds
That's fantastic! Feel free to ask questions along the way. I am on Facebook and Instagram also
Yo this is awesome. I’m just starting so this helps.

Thank you Chris! Cheers buddy
The dagger looks nice. Didn't expected to here, hand filing can be a anjoyeble process ;-).
I subbed too...
Thanks for joining us on the channel! Where are you at in the journey of knifemaking?
I'm currently working on a leather sheath for my knife. The video is coming soon.
I make knifes just vor fun and aktually work as a car mechanic. That's why everything takes a little longer for me.
Thanks for your videos, it helps us beginner a lot.
Greetings from Germany
Nice!!
Thanks Shannon!
@@Aleeknives I think you gave me a starting point where I won’t tick off the old lady with thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Lol
Oh for sure! I wish I had known it was this easy when I started!
Can you make a video about types of metals which are usinh in window grills?
Interesting
Just started in knife making. Great content. I really enjoy learning from you.
Thank you David!
Thanks, these tips definitely made my life easier. You earned the subcription!
That's awesome! Cheers
Love it bro. I already subbed keep it up!!!!
Thanks Jeffrey!
@@Aleeknives yes sir!
I take off the bulk off the bevels with belt sander. Then finish with file jig. To make sure my bevel angle is correct? l have a piece of aluminum bar stock the same thickens as my 01 steal l put a "Test'' bevel on with my file jig. The aluminum is much softer so it takes no time to work the bevel angle to make sure they're correct. Great tutorials brother! Keep them coming! And l did Sub😊
Glad to have you on the channel! That is some really good advise!
I subbed longgg time ago :) . I have almost the same jig like you. Mine it's in a T shape , on the wide side I have drilled holes from 2 to 2 cm , on every hole I put a nut . After that I have done a 50 cm metal bar ,to fit the nuts, at one end I have done a tread and at the other end I welded a ring . The bar with the file enter in the ring and I can adjust the angles just by screw or unscrew the metal bar in the nut . It works beautifully. Nice work by the way.
Thank you! I normally freehand on the 2x72 but wanted to go old school with this one! Thanks for hanging out! Cheers
@@Aleeknives Hopefully at a certain time I will afford an 2x72 belt grinder . Thank you for your answer .
The grinder is helpful in so many different ways outside of just knifemaking!
Awesome thx might have try this my self!
It works great!
I subscribed. I have my first piece of steel on the way. Why did you go with 1084 and not 1095 for the dagger?
I subscribed not cause you said but that your channel has more explanations on how to make knives a more simple and efficient way.
Thank you Victor! Appreciate that
Great job, teacher. Just the way I started. 💯👍👍👍👍 This is a great beginner instructional video for those who have never made a knife but want to. Fits well with your other instructional videos. Cheers! Old sub.
I hope some new makers are inspired by this one!
Can you make an in depth video on how to construct that file jig?
I subbed 😌
I’m a woodworker so I have very limited metalwork tools, but this is the first knife build I might actually try! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent!
Thanks for taking time out of your life to share your experience and enthusiasm for Knifemaking I appreciate your many project builds. You have great skill and presentation style that each give clear and consistently good information
Thanks From Rex Willmer from Melbourne, DownUnder👍🏻
Thanks again Rex! Rex from the down under! That has an awesome ring to it man!
Love your channel. I just ordered a new forge to make my first knife. You do great work and this will be my first knife. Wish me luck LOL
Man I wish you the best of luck!.
@@Aleeknives I just went to Etsy to order some knife kits but your out. Are you going to get some anytime soon? Thanks
I have been out of the country for over a month so I pulled all my stuff down. I won't have anything for another month or so because I can't ship it out. Sorry for the inconvenience! Cheers
Very nice. I`m glad that you used the file-jig. I personally don`t like the angle grinder despite the fact that it is a very essential tool in the workshop. It has so much power. It scares the crap out of me. When you were using it to grind that bevels I was sitting in front you the screen, telling myself: What the fuck man, that is some dangerous shit. I´m glad everything went fine in the end. Thanks for your work buddy. See you soon!
😂🤣 I definitely respect the angle grinder! I was running a flap disc so ot felt very similar to using a disc grinder

Awesome! Glad to have you on the channel! Feel free to ask questions!
I subbed awesome vid! Thanks
Thank you Thomas! Where are you at in your knife making journey?
Well, I followed your process and hand made my version of this dagger. I wonder, if we would like to share can we upload a pic or is that not allowed in the comments? Thanks!
UA-cam won't let you but I would love to see it! Feel free to email me
That vice-mounted angle grinder will grab your knife and throw it into the ceiling, if you get onto the wrong part of the wheel.
Sharpie markers work just as well as Dykem. Some people prefer them.
Cheers on showing how a drill can walk without a pilot, and the drill bit scribe technique.
So true on the angle grinder, it is similar to the buffing wheel, super scary. I have tried the sharpie but definitely prefer dykem! Thanks for your constructive comments! Keep them coming man! Cheers

Super! Glad to have you here on the channel! Let mo know if you have any video requests!
I subbed. Awesome video, gonna try it 🔥👍
Good luck! Feel free to ask questions along the way! Cheers
Greetings from Austria! I subbed (actually some time ago)
Super creative idea! Thumbs up!
Any plans for more copper experiments in near future?
Thanks for following the channel! Yes more copper is on the way! I love the contrast it gives your finished project! Cheers man!
I subbed. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Awesome Phillip glad to have you here on the channel! If you ever have any questions feel free
When I began making knives, one of the first was a 8.5 inches long, 3/16" thick camp knife with full flat bevels, all filled down with a jig like this.
That was ambitious!
How did it turn out?
@@Aleeknives it turns out that there is such thing as "too ambitious". I filed it down too thin and it broke during heat treatment. Couldn't recover anything. Almost 10 hours o filing went to waste. I learned a lot though.
I agree that every failed experiment has a positive outcome!
Would this sharpening method work for a curved blade knife? Would it follow line flow with the curve of the blade? Thanks for your content your helping alot 🙏
I bought a dagger kit with 10 pins need some tips on glue-up handle
Send me some pics on my email so I can see what we are working with! Airinlee@swbell.net
Quick question - I saw in your video that when drilling with a hand drill the pin holes wandered a little off center... I punched mine but they did the same and I assume it has to do with the rotation of the bit as it begins to cut but nonetheless it happened ever so slightly to me too. I too was using a pretty small 1/8" bit to start but it still wandered so I have some tiny starter holes but as I go up in bit size to get to my desired pin hole diameter how did you pull them to center since the pilot hole was what each graduated bit will still follow? Do I have to file out the small hole to bring the larger bit over before continuing or come in on an angle? I don't want to flub it up or make a bigger mess so was looking to see what you may have done. Thanks! I have my dagger profile cut and about to set up the jig you created to file the bevels.
I would just drill a larger hole than your pin stock and allow the epoxy to fill in the void area around the pin. Of course this is not ideal situation but could work fine
If I file the edge down 2 a dime thickness and heat treat it then how would I put the sharp edge on it afterwards? because that file want cut that hard steel.
I would go a little thinner if you don't have a belt sander
I subbed!!
That's fantastic! Glad to have you here on the channel!
Nice vid man. Can you time your build with basic tools vs with powered and specialized tools. I'm so curious on the time difference.
Honestly not that much different in time savings moving to a grinder but I will say it is a lot less labor intensive than using a hand file
@@Aleeknives ow i though there's a huge diff. I'm very interested in knife making to the point that I'm gonna make it a hobby then eventually a part time business. Not sure on what tools or machinery i need to invest. Seems like the basics are really the key to starting. I'll just make sure to anneal the blanks. Thanks!
I have lots of videos available about knifemaking! I hope you find some value there
I subbed.
Awesome Matt! Glad to have you here! Are you making knives?
Yes, and trying to get a little better each time.
Ahhh it's called a tall bevel grind, I did not know that.
Ground all the way to the apex
Subbed
Thanks Scott! Glad to have you here on the channel
Liked and subbed! Cool channel, man. What is that clear ruler thing you used called?
Thank you! Glad to have you here on the channel! I bought that ruler at Tandy leather. Not sure what it is called though
😁😁😁👍👍
Thank you!
I subbed! Any concerns with grinding inside your garage? Eg with things catching on fire?
Thanks for joining us on the channel! No I have zero concerns about grinding , forging, welding or anything else. I do have several fire extinguishers located in the shop for safety!
I love that file jig! How long did that filing take you?
I subbed. Have you ever considered making a straight razor?
Thanks Jordan! Glad to have you here on the channel! I have wanted to make a straight razor for a long time man! I just haven't done it yet! Tell ua what, I will move it up on the list of future builds! Up next is a short sword, wakizashi inspired!
Would a double cut file be more efficient in bevel cutting?
Absolutely! I am using a double cut here!. I will say it doesn't leave a great finish
It seems everyone but me gets lucky. I have to bring my knife way out to the edge of the sled. If not my file just eats wood. Looks good brother.
Thanks Tim! Looking forward to the handle setup video!
I have been very much looking forward to this, dude. It’s exactly how I made my first knife, with hand tools and a file jig. They work surprisingly good, don’t you think? Sure they’re slower, but with that comes control.
I somehow think you might have something other than Herchey bars and Skittles for the next build! 🤣🤣👍🏻
This format was spot on! Hugely informative and great fun to watch.
Congrats on the 6k, Airin. We gotta design you some merch! 😎
Take care, brother 🇬🇧✌🏻
Well the plan was to send you some of that new merch! I haven't unveiled it to the public yet! I am going to check around on postage this week, $85 bucks seemed insane to me! I have a real nice box of goodies headed your way brother! Cheers

P.s. Been a sub for a while
Your awesome Davin!

Wicked! Glad to have you here on the channel!
I subbed! I am wondering (Im sure you get this A LOT lol) if you can give me advice on the bare minimum equipment for blade making and forging.
I haven’t made a knife. Yet.
When you created your initial bevel, what kind of file is used?
Thnx
I used a cheap flat bastard file from harbor freight!
I subbed. Can you make a video on making a propane forge please?
Thank you! I have plans to build a new forge! Cheers
That's gonna look awesome man. You've got some mean file skills. Sending you an email of the sheath

What size pins are you using and what size drill bit for those pins?
Part 2 is available for viewing now
These are .125 pins and the drill was .126
i will subbed
Thanks Walter!
What brand of cutoff wheel do you run?
I have always used harbor freight brand cut off wheels
I SUBBED
That's awesome! Glad to have you here on the channel Pat!
Maybe I missed it, apologize if it's posted somewhere and I didn't see it, but you mentioned you have a kit on Etsy for this build? I searched Aleeknives on Etsy but not finding it. Do you have a kit to build this dagger? Thanks!
I jad kits for a short while but I couldn't keep the parts in stock
@@Aleeknives No problem. I believe I have everything I need to give this a try. If I can do any justice to an attempt I'll see if I can post the pic. Not even sure we're able to post pics but nonetheless I know it'll be cool to build. Thanks!
Good luck! Take your time and I promise you'll be happy with what you're left with
Another great video, how would you've gone about putting in a fuller on both sides?
That is a good question! I don't know how without my 2x72 or my mill but there is surely a way!
Would some type of a guide down the center and a dremmel work?
It could but I have had dismal results with a dremel personally
@@Aleeknives the reason why I ask is my buddy bought a sweet piece of Damascus and wants me to make him a dagger very similar to the one in your build vid but he wants a fuller and a finger guard with a slight s curve, all of which are completely outside my wheelhouse.😩
🤣😂 I get it! Everything is new to me till it isn't! I was thinking about that fuller and what if you set up a guide and used a round file right down the middle. On katanas the fuller goes through the guard and into the handle tang sometimes. This might be an option!
going to look good when it is done, was wondering how long it would take to bin off the grinder and get the files out lol, been there and done that, mind not even got a grinder now, I personally think you connect with what you are doing more with everything being done by hand, as you have seen what I do isn't exactly precise as in how you make things, had to go back with the files more than once to mess that up as doesn't look right for what I have made so far, roll on the next video and seeing the end results, should be well cool
Thanks Andy! I agree that there is a deeper connection to the project t when working with hand tools! Cheers buddy!
which disk were you using to do all the grinding?
flaap disk?
A flap and also a grinding disc
