      Just as a friendly reminder: when Larry Chen sent his Skyline R34 for Yoshida's Shop in Japan to be fully refurbished, it costed him somewhere at US$ 75,000 to 100,000. Yep, he blew half of his bank account, and... considering that many ocidental idiots want too much for old and rusty cars (preserving, instead of using them as they should be), imploding this market with chinese copies is the best thing to do.

    Hi guys, I am the owner of this AE86 and I am from Hong Kong. I sent my AE86 to renovate in my friend's restoration shop. He deliver the car for a electro-coating, which equally giving the chassis a brand new body. My car is purchased from Japan and imported to Hong Kong, therefore what you see in this video is the original 1984 JDM body. As for the scanning dot, its mainly for the upcoming die-cast model.
    For the most asked questions:
    1) Is this company trying to produce a after market AE86 body? I think they are, by collecting the chassis data from my JDM, which I was only informed after the car was sent back to my friend shop,
    2) Will they able to provide it? As at the moment, I can say probably not. Even with the buying link on ALI-B, they are unlikely to start the production line. My guess is 50 order units will be the minimum break-even line to start.
    3) Can the quality be ensured? I cant tell if it can compare to 2024 Japan / Europe car parts standard. But tbh China car manufacturers are developing pretty quick in recent years, it will be possible for matching a 1980s car making quality, its only the willingness for them to invest the costs and materials.
    Finally, I am just a normal enthusiast for JDM like the rest.

    This is the future for car enthusiast market. Rather than just relying on the manufactures to make cool new cars, new & old companies will be buying the licenses of the beloved and Iconic JDM Sports Cars and remanufactured the bodies, chassis, engines, etc. I can see maybe in the 5-10 years people will start remanufacturing cars like the EG/EK Civic, Integra Type Rs, SW20 MR-2s, Celica GT-4, Supra, Skyline GT-R, Silvias, etc. Let's just hope government regulations won't be too tough and the Original Manufacturers will be willing to sell official licenses.

      In the US there are a few companies that make brand new chasis for old 1960 Mustangs, Camaros and a few older classic Muscle cars. But in able to register the car after it's built you need a VIN number from an old original car. So unless you already own one or can find a rusted out one for cheap just to use the VIN number you just can't build your own if you intend to drive it on public roads.

      finding 86 parts is easy and toyota recently made a big batch of previously discontinued parts for people still building 86s. if these shells spark more interest in building 86s it’s likely toyota or another company will produce more parts

    • @evoman44
      @evoman44 3 місяці тому +1

      @Mika-ph6ku A kit car is a little different because some of them are meant to go over an existing chassis like the many kits that have been made for Pontiac Fieros or VW Beatles. And some kits might include a MCO or MSO number from a manufacturer that can be used in place of a VIN.
      But in this case building a car using a new shell would be classified as an assembled car. It is possible to get a new VIN number from the DMV but you have to submit all receipts together with the application. Then it needs to be inspected in person. Depending on the state laws the process can be easier or harder. Using an existing VIN number without a history of unrepairable is an easier process.

    @Pyramid6666 3 місяці тому +27

    This is actually a very good thing, it helps preserve and gives people the ability to race/drift/rally these cars in the future without the need to destroy an original shell. Mini (I believe officially?) and various other third party companies do this sort of thing for cars, some even make replicas of the ford escort mk1 and mk2 largely due to how much those cars go for now.
    This makes more sense since people obviously want to use these in motorsport, but cannot afford or justify buying a car that costs money to only end up rolling it or crashing into a tree or some other sort of incident that destroys the car, much easier (and likely cheaper) to get a shell.
    Personally I expect that manufacturers such as Subaru might start doing this officially as well once Impreza prices start going off the rails in 10 years or so, in order to keep classic rallying alive.

    Agreed, I think it is a great thing. We are talking about 40yo cars and body panels only, the amount of engineering required to make a "fake" one is hardly going to flood the market with new examples, and being able to fix current ones has to be a good thing with many still being raced to this day.

    I see this as an absolute win for the car community. I have wanted an 86 for a long time but the market is way too expensive. Having this option is amazing but I wonder how it will effect the market. Will ae86's become cheaper due to the reproduction of the body? What I've heard is that there aren't a lot of parts for the 86 on the Toyota Gazoo website. I kinda hope this will drop the price of 86 so parts are easier to obtain. Definitely see myself purchasing this sometime in the future if it means I can have one of my dream cars for an affordable price.

    I work in a bodyshop and I can solemnly say that auto body parts made in China rust in 3-4 years, they don't always fit 100%... Sooo, paying for a complete shell it's quite risky that if you don't treat it youself. They are very affordable tho, compared to OEM auto parts

    I think that if the original companies aren't producing the cars anymore, 3rd party manufacturers should be able to build shells of them, if the car is old enough of course, kind of like a public domain type thing. Like how aftermarket parts are the only option for some older cars that need replacements, it would be nice to see aftermarket shells for cars that are hard to find in good condition!

  • @ArseniyS-xr1dl
    @ArseniyS-xr1dl 3 місяці тому

    Honestly it's a good thing, and I'd wish more manufacturers do something similar. There are many cars that look absolutely incredible modded, and considered to be iconic, but it feels very-very wrong when people use something incredibly rare for projects. It wont undercut the value of originals (if anything will likely add more value), and will help to preserve what's left. Like I wouldn't mind having replica of 2 door 1971 Skyline 2000 GT-R, since there's no chance I'll be able to afford original any time soon, and I won't let myself to mod one if I ever get it.

    I know that company from years ago and I am even invited to visit them, had talked personally with them, besides the AE86 they made more classic car shells, most of them Toyota, but they are planning to go forward with this, I know some of their plans and they are incredible, I would love to see those cars driving around China, but for most of the people they could sell the full shell or just parts for full restoration, they are in the car industry for many years and even they built parts before for GM, so the quality is quite good, i can admit that they did something nobody else think about or just like in my case didn't had the chance to make it possible. In my case yes, I would buy one, plus if I can make it road legal in China

    If all the mounting points, tolerances, and shape of the vehicle can be as true to the original as possible (as in being able to bolt on any OEM AE86/AE85 part to this replica frame like a Porsche 911 and backdating) then this would be an extremely viable option to keep these cars alive. I would love to see how the chassis can be improved without changing the original unibody frame by way of fiberglass/carbon fiber sandwhich in lays for the flooring executed with a honeycomb matrix geometry design to substantially increase chassis rigidity (decrease flex). Hopefully it makea the cars safer.

    Man Im glad i got my AE86 back when they were super cheap i got it for $1500.00CDN. But honestly these cars are just OK stock. They are fun but the drive train is pretty fragile on these cars. The 4AGE are solid but the T50 transmissions and the differentials are the major weak point on them. I can't wait to see people building these things NEW with maybe the GR Corolla 3cyl or the new 2.0L from Toyota that will be coming out in the near future. I really hope they do this for a bunch of other JDM cars!

    I think this is a great idea especially for someone who wants to build a drift car or track car. I feel like it's going to be a little bit harder for people who want to use this as a street car though as they would have to already own an AE86 or purchase a registered chassis so they can use the VIN off that chassis and register the new shell under that vehicle. This would be great for all the 80's and 90's JDM Legends

    Its been 40 years since the original AE86 was released. To put that in perspective, American companies began making 1957 Chevy kits in 1991 - or 34 years later.
    1980s JDM are now classics and it makes total sense this is happening, whether by Chinese companies or anyone else.

    It's absolutely a good thing, let's not ignore what's gone before. The older generations already know it costs a hell of a lot more than 9K to get an original shell back to the level on a new one. Every thing from a 57 Chevy to a Smokey and to Bandit T/A shell can be bought from a website, it's about time the import crowd got the same kind of love. Yes, there WILL be scammers, there always is, but the thought of Z-cars, RX7's, 510's and Celica's with modern drive lines and underpinnings roaming the streets out weight the negatives. Would love to see this trend extend to to Euro cars as well.

    This is great for people that are building race cars and drift cars. The availability of car parts will lead to the increase in numbers of cars and will ultimately lead to a downward adjustment in price since they are not as scarce as they once were.
    Experts will work hard to show ways to differentiate an original versus a remake.
