Still drives me bananas that they made it a point that any age can attend Naranja/Uva, AND the story doesn't rely on you being a kid in the way previous stories did, AND they clearly had a pretty robust set of mix-and-match bodies... then nah you're still a kiddo

And the only thing that really effects is the Team Star plotline, both because the dropouts of Team Star are reinstated into Naranja/Uva academy eventually and because Director Clavell tries to be a hip young man for some reason but it works only because there are old people.

The fact that continue to compliment the visuals of Let's Go to this day I feel like shows how popular Megumi Mizutani's (designer of SwSh player characters Victor & Gloria, and several Pokemon like Hisuian Arcanine, Mimikyu, Tinkaton, Maushold) artstyle is to the series for a lot of people. Her art for both and games and TCG is colorful and expressive and I think it kinda sucks that SV does not lend itself to this style.
Like with SwSh, the transition to 3D does show that certain characters were done by different artists.
For several examples, Geeta, Rika, and Poppy was likely designed by Take (designed behind the Galar Gym Leaders, Adaman, and Irida).
Penny was likely designed by Haruko Ichikawa (mangaka of Houseki no Kuni and designer behind Chairman Rose and Oleana for SwSh).
The base player characters, Florian & Julianna as well as the BB League members like Drayton and Lacey was likely designed by Yusuke Ohmura (designer of some of BW's characters, Marnie and several Pokemon like Oshawott, Urshifu, Zacian, and Zamazenta).
For me, I think SV's approach to realism hurts how the characters look. Personally, if they were to continue this pursuit of semi-realism, I would prefer they go along of the lines of artist Kawayoo, at least in terms of backgrounds. (Artist behind the ORAS Hoenn, Alola, and Let's Go Kanto map artwork).

I still remember being SO excited and shouting at my TV "Oh that is SO mean" when Larry came up in the E4, since I also picked him as my hardest. I'm so sad it wasn't actually that, because that rush of emotion was so heccin' cool and would've been something totally new and unique

Seems there’s a quite common trend of Normal type leaders providing quite difficult challenges during the main story playthrough.
Whitney, Norman, Lenora, Illima and Larry are all relatively difficult battles at their respective points in each game.

    " a shiny noise/visual cue would've given me peace of mind that I didn't miss a shiny"
Oh please, we all know that if they added it, it would be implemented so poorly that we would all still miss the shinies that we miss now, and then the difference would be that we would very often spend time looking for a shiny that probably despawned the moment we heard the noise 🤣
But yes, a shiny cue would be great, IF they put enough effort and care into it so that it didn't add other drawbacks and be reasonable (like if it went off only when they're somewhat close rather than spawn distance for example, etc.)

    I really wish this game:
    1-looked good.
    2-ran well.
    3-wasn't glitchy.

I think they could've done it BETTER, but I'm pretty sure Penny having nothing to do in Area Zero after Arven hypes up how there's a lot of weird tech to deal with is supposed to be foreshadowing on Sada/Turo being a robot that already dealt with it for you. But yeah again, that DEFINITELY could've been set up more strongly... even just Penny snarking "So uh, why did you drag me here again?" would do the trick and remind the player that something to do with the advanced technology is amiss, but in a way that *benefits* you

    • @UmbreonLibris

love this video! genuinely touches on practically everything i have an issue with. i'm honestly so frustrated that i love the characters so, so much-- especially kieran! he's genuinely my new favorite pokemon character (and current favorite character in general, honestly), but that frustration is because the games themselves are so disappointing. at every choice, it's a yes or yes. the worst really was when we had to lie to kieran, it genuinely made me upset because it gave us the illusion of choice during it, but no matter what option, we still break his trust. i loved his story and i love finding out all the little details others notice that i missed during it, but i can't recommend the games to anyone. as a bonus opinion that might not be too popular, i genuinely think the DLC should have been included in the main game. while i loved the DLC, getting to meet kieran and carmine and then playing through blueberry academy and the results of that, i don't think it should have been an extra $30 and it's especially criminal that you have to pay for it twice if you have both games. pokemon being split games in the modern era is already ridiculous and a money grab, but making you buy an actually genuinely good ending to the SV story separately making the total game $90 is insane to me. i liked the characters of the base game, but found the actual game itself lacking painfully and felt the region could have used some edits. then i got the DLC and i loved it even with the grindy parts and the stupid illusions of choice because i loved the story of kieran and carmine and everyone else so dang much. i'm even playing through it again on the opposite version this time so i can play as a character and not myself like i did in my first playthrough and experience it as that character from a new lens (and also to play kieran's arc again... did i mention he's my fave? lmao) even though i *still* find the gameplay in the main story lacking and have issues with a whole host of things.
i know the classic argument i'm giving is contrasted with "well, why buy it and support them if you dislike it so much?" and jokes on YOU, imaginary person i'm making up, i borrowed both games and the DLC for scarlet from my brother. i only paid for the violet DLC because i'm still part of the problem 👍
as for glitches, i think you lucked out. i only have a switch lite which definitely makes the glitches worse, but the amount of them that genuinely break parts of the game has been ridiculous. if i'm in certain areas of the map in paldea, the picnic table never loads in when i start it. can sometimes still make sandwiches, but everything except the toppings are invisible and i obviously can't make the sandwiches correctly in that case. i've had KoMi get stuck "jumping" off ledges so many times just by walking near them, i'll randomly run into pokemon that aren't even loaded in or on screen and it will teleport me yards away to battle. i had a really weird one in the blueberry dome where the entire screen was motion blurred, but basically frozen during a battle? i've had countless others and am experiencing even more on my violet playthrough, specifically tons of graphical glitches where NPCs, even trainers, are stuck underground and it takes upwards of ten seconds for them to load in. the ground disappears for me constantly, both where i can see the skybox and where i can see the blue and black grid map they left in. the absolute worst is the crashes though, it's crashed a handful of times randomly, but *always* crashes for me the first time i beat kofu. on both games. as soon as i finish talking to nemona or whoever it is in the gym building post battle, it crashes immediately and i have to rebattle him. that's a common one from what i've seen, not sure why though. i've had other minor glitches as well, like battling on bridges making the pokemon clip through and the game thinks they're all on water so they're on floats despite being suspended in the air, textures sliding around like crazy (been a problem with mountain spots ever since at least SWSH), my pokemon getting stuck during passive training and me being unable to command or recall them where they either just stand there idly or essentially go on a rampage until i reopen the game. this game really wasn't optimized at all, especially not for the lite.

    • @UmbreonLibris
      @UmbreonLibris  2 місяці тому +1

Damn, that really is a lot of glitches! I'm sorry you've had that experience. I've heard you're more likely to have a bad experience on a Switch Lite or if you're playing a digital copy (and maybe even depending on where the digital copy is saved), none of which are my case. I've got a physical copy and a standard Switch. But even so, maybe I did get lucky!

    • @SpookyDeerArt
      @SpookyDeerArt 2 місяці тому

@@UmbreonLibris shockingly, a lot of my glitches have been with the physical copy of violet instead of the digital copy of scarlet! definitely a switch lite issue with the game i fear. both are saved to my SD card i believe, but my switch also isn't in top condition, i've put it through thousands of hours of ACNH and pokemon combined since i got it in 2021 and the battery is even busted on it so i have to keep it on charge constantly lol still though, SV is the only game i've gotten this many glitches with on it!

...and also apparently his Dragonite is Tera-Normal in classic VGC fashion, though I'm not sure how it would ever come into play.
Geeta also has a Tera-Flying Kingambit on rematches,
and I think it's worth mentioning Nemona's starters using their secondary types as their Tera types on the final version of her team, because while those are "one of the Pokémon's types", it's still very much a surprise, due to her previously having the expected Tera-type, and those types being gained upon evolution which means that they are still a deliberate change~
There's also "the secret boss of Blueberry Academy", who has a Unovan starter with a VERY unusual Tera type that no one would ever see coming.

Also, Penny is both the dubiously-ethical hacker and the person who made Team Star who, while they are very literally are just a group of people who protect each other, have become bullies and hooligans. Penny may be more polite, but you always know what Nemona is about and that she wants a friend that can challenge her. Director Clavell, outside of the needed disguise as Clive, is also sincere and responsible. Otherwise the main characters save the player characte are all a bit gray morally.

What made them so frustrating for me was that there was so much potential for an absolute S tier game but they dropped the ball in so many aspects that in the end I was more or less just disappointed.
I regularly get the impression that the designers are totally disconnected from public feedback or wishes (or they are and the higher ups just push them to make certain decisions) + these games lack consistency in terms of QoL changes where they add a feature for one Gen then you never see it again.
Also things like accessibility for in all aspects (UI elements etc.) or even for competitive players. Hell most Rom Hacks have the "Rusted Bottle Cap" already which makes one of your IVs 0 because it nearly impacts every game. Then GF proceeded to ban players that generated their mons (that would take hundreds or thousands of hours to RNG for) instead of just adding the feature - but nope still nothing. I am getting angry again so I'll end the comment now haha

I still have/had a great time with SV+DLC, like I do with every new release in the series. The story and characters this time around was surprisingly good. Unlike SwSh, SV handled all its plotlines very well.
(I still like SwSh; the end of the main story was the only real issue, since Rose’s plan didn’t really make any sense, and came outta nowhere)
I do agree with a lot of the criticisms of these games, and I believe going forward, longer development cycles would greatly help the quality of future releases. And considering there is no new mainline series release this year, and talk about how the yearly cycle has impacted each new game, hopefully it’s a sign of good things to come.

My only major criticisms about SV’s main story is the lack of level scaling at the very least in the Victory Road plot. It’d be great if Starfall and Path of Legends also had scaling, but more so the Gym plot line. Nemona scales roughly to your level, but if I skip Katie or Brassius at the beginning, then they’re complete pushovers when I do finally come back to face them.

You nailed perfectitly all the issues with this game too haha but the issue with quick text dialogue / need for voice acting was something I hardly get ppl to talk about.

3:30 I'm surprised this stuck out enough to get a mention,
for me it would be A MASSIVE quality of life improvement if there was any of the basic functionality one would expect to be able to do in regards to sandwich recipes, because making very specific sandwiches is a fundamental part of my hundreds of hours of shiny/jumbo/mark hunting, as I make sandwiches about once every 20 min for hour-long sessions when I don't feel like doing something that requires more of my brainpower.
But I'm pretty sure I'm in a minority of players for who the sandwich feature is actually of any use LOL

3:38, you CAN nickname mons in the Boxes,
but as I went to confirm it before commenting, the option was at a different place than I remember it being (it is in the summary screen now lol), I suspect the box update placed it where it should've been.

It's just bizarre to me that they introduce a new feature with the potential to be super useful, but then don't take the steps to make it actually usable. And of course, that's not to mention that making sandwiches is itself an awful experience

Steel-type specialist pilot-themed character felt very fresh and could've been a very cool replacement of Skyla as a gym leader in a new Unova adventure.
Then there's all the fun odd-personality interactions in the league club, on top of the above mentioned Agias incident (+ being the person that gives you flight in general).
Her ace is Metagross which is still one of my fave pseudo-legends, while her Pokémon in general are IN HEAVY BALLS.
She's one of 3 out of ~30 people in the league club that trades you a character Mark Pokémon that is NOT in a regular Poké Ball, and the other two that do that have it in like a Great Ball and a Quick Ball.

What really disappoints me about this game is the underutilization of Nemona. If they weren't so concerned with making this game new user and kid friendly they could have made her a reflection of us and a SERIOUS battler. I feel like that one change would have elevated this game even more. Like imagine your first battle with Nemona is just her throwing powerful mons at you and wiping the floor with you before the principal reminds her you're new so she starts her team over to battle with you and that's why she uses new mon all game, maybe even switch her team up for the final battle to her real champion team. Imagine if she was programmed after real world pokemon battlers and used strategies that people used all the timed during tournaments, if we could battle her like once a day and if you wanted you could just keep going after each match lol. There's part of the story where a text bubble comes up saying you and her battled for 2 hours, WHERE WAS I!? I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO PLAY THAT! I'd find it hilarious if she was just ridiculously hard and showed up randomly to best that ass. They could have done so much with her!

I will say it may have proved difficult to implement you being any age. You become good friends with a bunch of teens who invite you to their dorm rooms to hang out and whatnot over the course of the game. Its not that it is a hard barrier for a fictional video game, but it may prove a tad cumbersome to make work with people creating bearded thirty year old characters.

It's a school where students of any age can enroll. Interactions between students of different ages should be expected, even the occasional friendship. I don't see why they couldn't make it work with a few minor. Or they could really commit and have different dialogue depending on the age of the player.

I adore the story.. I have 2.5 harsh issues. 1: the team star story did not focus on penny enough, like barely any screentime, it felt more like a clavall story even though you could tell it was SUPPOSED to be penny's. 2: despite it being like... the main message of the game, penny, arven, and nemona don't really interact at all until the finale, and even then they f*ck off during a small section before the ai professor fight! (Issue 2.5: the dlc does not fix this even when the 3 of them DO come back)

Hearing you describing the plot makes me think the takeaway of the story is that the adults are mostly just selfish a-holes letting the kids to deal with most of the danger.
Wait, why does that sound like the plot with most Pokemon games?

It gets even better. At least Giovanni is a mafia boss. The leaders of Team Aqua and Team Magma are arguing over bad environmentalist opinions. Cyrus is (in Platinum) possibly just a wounded child. Ghetsis is just a child. Lysander is basically a rich person. Lusamine in Sun and Moon is literally a bad mother. Chairman Rose is very literally too impatient to deal with a problem so far away. Finally, the previous adults of the Naranja/Uva Academy literally botched their jobs so badly a counterbullying group had to form and they were correctly fired for letting a disaster of that caliber happen, and even when DLC is taken into account Carmine, who is an older child but has some caretaker-ish experience, she was rude enough that Kieran really got into a funk requiring two DLC to break and that is only because Terapagos violently rejected Kieran.

My brain represses new snap lol. I saw some gameplay and got so upset that the pokemon company wouldnt take time to give us an open world closer to THAT world. I know its hard to make a fully explorable world that beautiful, but i and many other pokemon fans are willing to wait for GF to take the time to make it! Its possible, other companies have been making detailed open world games for years that function much better than V/S. Pal world is a good example of how their games could be. Its fun to grow up with a franchise, but its disappointing when youre excited to see how a company will impliment the new advanced tools for making games, but instead of giving us more magic, they rip us off.

The funny thing is that at least in Pokémon designs, their borrowing is so obvious; it’s the fact that the Pokémon spinoffs are within an ARK-like world that makes Palworld creative. That is, even in Palworld it is not the Pokémon part that is creative.

i think gen 8 and gen 9 are opposites for me in a way... i really love the presentation and characters in gen 8 (even the ugly wild area didn't bother me too much except maybe the Awful berry trees. but also i basically only play in handheld mode) but the writing in those games is pretty terrible. i distinctly remember multiple moments in the story where you're told to "let the adults handle things" *directly related to the main story* so you can go off and do the gym challenge thing. whereas with scarlet and violet i loved the story but the visual style was really disappointing and fatiguing at times. it was sort of like the entire game (except for the towns) was a gen 8 wild area visually lol. almost feel like sun and moon would be the best looking games visually if they were in HD and not on a crusty 3ds screen.
also it annoyed me to NO END that you there were so many buildings you couldn't go into!!! going into houses/cafes/hotels/whatever and seeing all the weird and silly npcs that game freak made in previous games was such a highlight for every playthrough for me that interacting with doors in SV and getting Zero feedback was just agonizing! almost makes me wish there weren't any doors in the first place like those doorless buildings that make towns look bigger in previous games

    • @UmbreonLibris
      @UmbreonLibris  2 місяці тому +1

I really don't mind not being able to go into houses and such _in principle_. But it really did mean that there was a lot less to do in the towns.
Sun and Moon upscaled to HD does look pretty great! If it had been made _for_ HD I'm sure it would look even better.
