i actually bought a replica copy of Heart Gold (knowingly) at a gaming store once. It was cheaper plus in a more factory new condition so i bought it. the guy at the counter said it should run normally like an actual copy but then when i reached Goldenrod and tryed playing Voltorb Flip i got the same black screen as in this video.
I had the same problem, but there is a way to work around it. I got a HeartGold from GameStop and I went like up to the steel gym leader, and then when I open the save file, it goes black. The way to work around that is to go to the game's menu, start a new game, once your character appears in the bedroom soft reset it (L + R + start + select). It takes you back to the opening screen and from there you can select your save file and continue. However, I also came across a different issue outside of that. In my fake HG copy, I was only able to use the trading room a few times. After my like third or fourth time using the wireless trading room, anytime I tried to enter the screen would show up with an error or something. So I'd say be wary of that too if you wanna use HG for long term and wanna continously trade Pokémon in and out of that file.
I bought a fake soul silver a couple years ago and tried to shiny hunt on it. Imagine my surprise when I found out the save feature had broken somewhere in the many hours before I got the shiny, when I tried to save and the game crashed
So, fake carts of HGSS, BW, and B2W2 are easy to spot because the originals come in a black cartridge. This is to signify that they have infrared capabilities. For HGSS, this was for the pokewalker. In BW and B2W2, it was for easier wireless gameplay, also for multi battle lines in the battle subway. Gen 5 also used IR communication for official tournaments and special event pokemon.
Videos like this are really helpful for making sure I’m finding real copies of BW2, but my main problem is actually buying them cause yeah it’s still a lot
You can get around that by playing on a 3DS. I got a bootleg copy of HeartGold and it went black after the 4th gym. When I put it in my 3DS, it worked perfectly
I had a cartridge that worked fine but ended up being a fake. Didn’t know until the pokewalker I bought for it would communicate because the actual cartridges have a chip in them or something and when the Nintendo rep ram the serial number it didn’t show up as an actual copy of heart gold

This is true. However you could put 50+ hours into a save file only to have it disappear one day. You really want to take that risk?
@@Josh_Stuchbery for $20 vs $500? Sure don't mind one bit. I wanna play the game not go around bragging about my purchase
him: the left one
me: **puts up left hand and makes an L**
Kinda makes me terrified of that copy of Pokémon platinum I got for 20 bucks
The one thing I knew as a kid was that black boarder = real deal grey boarder depends on what pokemon game but as far as mainstream goes like heartgold soulsilver or black n white as well as the second one all have black boarders n surprisingly enough I have soulsilver white 1 and white 2 and all of which have the black boarder hopefully this helps the game hunters out there
I have platinum with a grey border iirc but I've never gotten past volkner on there due to lazyness, is it fake?
This only applies to HG/SS and Black/White 1+2
@@alexh2947 dppt all have grey borders dw
They have the black borders because they use infared to communicate.
I bought fake Digimon World games on the DS and none of them worked. That was $30 lost, but I learned a lesson: Emulate.
And whatever you do, do NOT try to access the Game Corner with a fake copy. You will regret it.
Why? What happens?
@@fieratheproud Your save bricks on a black screen.
That when I figured out I bought I fake copy
that happend to me. luckily I didn't save so I could rescue my save file from before I went in there.
@@azazelsvideos8298why does it do that
I’ve never personally had any issues with fake copies of the games, and there is no way I would pay for a genuine copy with the inflated prices
"Never buy fake pokemon games"
Me originally planning to buy ONLY fake pokemon games: "God fu*king damnit"
If your going to be playing it on a 3ds you will not encounter this problem, if your playing on a ds just start new game advance to the part where your in your room do not save, do a soft reset click continue and game will be working fine.
It's anti-piracy stuff. They really went all out with Heart Gold and Soul Silver. Even on emulators with a rom hacked version of the games (Sacred Gold/Storm Silver), there would occasionally be a black/messed up screen.
The only HG/SS og copy you’re gonna find is hundreds of dollars and you still might get shipped a fake one
I'm more impressed that the OG 3ds is still functional
Why wouldn’t it be? There’s people to this day that still play their gameboys lol
I got mine to work by making a new save file then resetting
How come that works for everyone but me ;-;
I have real copies but never had a problem with the copies. I wanted to gift some to my family and friends, and SS HG are expensive
Well yes, but who has the money to shell out $90-150 for one singular Pokemon cartridge?
"don't buy the 2 dollar game buy the 120 dollar game!"
$20 vs 90*
buy the 0$ game and emulate it lol, if you have a 3ds you can even load the rom directly onto it with an SD card so you dont even need an R4 or anything
This happens to me with my fake one, but all I have to to is switch it from my DS lite to my 2DS and it magically starts to work again.
@@charnalk5572 that’s so weird. It’s happening to me before the league like at the 3rd gym. But I get what your saying.
@@WallyTheWagonfor me it’s the other way around I decided to try my luck w bootleg HeartGold, my 2DS XL wouldn’t take it but my DS lite runs it without issue
very happy i managed to get a real copy of SS, i absolutely love that game
Happened to me with a fake Soulsilver!! But when I played it in my 3DS no issues. Hope this helps
The only problem my fake cart is there is no game corner
I thought I was the only one who had this issue. Was so sad I couldnt rack up points for a dratini
Same thing happened to me with heart gold on a ds lite I just put the game in a dsi and it worked
Well considering I'm not casually dropping $150+ for a ds game ima go for this or just good ole emulation.
When at the black screen do a soft reset by holding L+R+start+select. The DS will reboot into the game again and this time your safe will load! Get you treasured Pokémon off that fake card quickly!
I just clicked on this short not knowing who posted that when I heard it was Kev dog I Was so hyped
I had a fake emerald, it wouldn’t even let me do the cloning glitch 😂
That cloning glitch was mad 🤣
I remember playing Emerald via emulator on my iphone 4 way back and going crazy cloning all 3 cover legendaries.
Yo bro you have a nicely edited video your on the way to success
Thank you! That’s really nice
Bought fake copies of Diamond, Pearl and Platinum and somehow haven't ran into any issues. I regularly back up the saves with my 3ds in case anything happens.
Same! I got diamond, hg and ss but only ss has done this
Weird aint it? A "real" game is code crammed onto an empty cartridge. But a "fake" game is... code? Crammed onto... an empty cartridge?
We had a fake copy of pokemon gold when we were kids...it was amazing. Worked like the original, but all attacks had weird ass names, like slam was fork. I will never stop laughing thinking back to that blursed mess-
After getting my shiny starter a few weeks ago I started to check if my copy was real. Tho at that point it would’ve been really sad, I came to the conclusion that I’m 90 percent sure it’s real but people say if it freezes that can mean it’s fake and mine does that occasionally but idk if it’s cause it might be fake or cause my ds falling shakes it up on the impact.
I guess it really depends on how old ur cartridge is. My pokemon mystery dungeon game worked perfectly for years but after maybe like let's say 8 years it started to wear snd had issues with freezing or not being able to be read.
I do believe cartridges have a lifespan and if they're used a lot it can prob wear them down but idrk. Ik my mystery dungeon game wasn't a fake tho.
@@lonerevenant0 yea it probably does have something to do with age like how gameboy Pokémon games have the problem after a while of saying the eternal clock has run dry or sum like that. Originally I remember the game being my friends brothers and he played it back when I was in like 5th grade so that was at least 7 or so years ago and who knows how much it was used before then. The voltorb game works so I’ll just assume that’s enough to say it’s real lmao
That’s why you don’t waste 120$ on 40$ game just mod a 3ds for free
I only realized last year that my copy of FireRed is a boot leg. I've had it for like 10 years, played it most of the way through, never really had any problems until I wanted to use it to transfer Pokemon to Platinum, and the later refuses to recognize it was inserted. I thought it was my DS. I tried to get it fixed, I bought a whole ass new one, nothing. I even booted up FireRed only to realize my entire save file had randomly been deleted. Did some googling and sure as shit it's a fake. RIP. All of that time I seriously thought the "Save file is ok" message was a Gameboy thing. I had no idea it was covering up a piracy error.
I had a couple soul silver fake carts that crashed as soon as you got to the Snorlax scene.
Gotta catch all that free time first
Yes, this is the anti piracy measure
I remember i bought a fake copy of HGSS off ebay a decade ago (didn’t know it was fake at the time) but in tiny text on the page it said it only worked on ds lite but not dsi so I couldn’t use it.
This happened to my friends crystal game, he was crushed when he couldn’t open it
Using a original DS lite in 2023? That is some retro hardcore uniqueness 😂
wait isn't that just the original normal DS? the lite i remembered quite different
Depends on where you buy it from I have a friend who makes fake cartridges and they work 100% through the game, it's not as easy as just flashing a rom on it but fairly straight forward
This guy gets one bad cartridge and assumes there all bad 😅 and makes a video about it 😂
You should tell that friend not to
@@YoKevdog I can't decide what he does with his life and time, if he wants to make them, then let him, neither me or you has the authority to stop him, just because you are a UA-camr does not mean you are better than other people
@@Ivangee87 Exactly thats what im thinking, im like the games are 20 years+ old at this point, surely pokemon dont care that much, especially seeing as they leaked the full rom of scarlet and violet to emulators
@YoKevdog why the hell would he tell him not to? Imagine that conversation lmao. "Bro, you need to stop this. Making reproduction DS carts is not ok. A youtuber told me." Smh.
I had a similar experience playing a fake heartgold, but my game still went up to red and I could still play the whole thing, the only problem I had was I couldn't play the casino in goldenrod. My game would soft lock everytime I played it
I brought fake platinum diamond and pearl and it was fine till the other dimension just wouldn't finish
This happens to authentics too but it takes longer
I got burned on a fake yellow cart. Every Pokémon that goes into the PC pretty much is bugged and unrecoverable
I had a diamond save with about 30 hours pokerus and 8 badges but it got deleted and now it won't save :(
From what I’ve herd they tend to program a self destruct part to rid of the ROM over time. I wonder if this is why that happened to his copy.
I have the same odds of breaking a fake cartridge as I do a real one. Good job on doing something no one I’ve ever known has done tho.
Happened to me with a copy of crystal and when I reported it to Amazon, the seller mysteriously had deactivated their account.
My uncle accidentally bought one of those for me a couple years ago, it would have the same problem once I get the 4th gym badge and left the game
Looks like it went through the laundry. This is very common, but the outcome varies. I would know.
"You'll end up like me" oh hell no! No shiny hunting for me please
This is where that one friend just goes "..... Seems like a skill issue bro"
Hit new game, walk around and soft reset to your original save. Had the same issue
This even happens with the older ones too. Got pretty far in Blue before it stopped saving
i was 12 and my mom got a "deal" on 6 gen 3 cartridges on ebay (red flag)
one of them was an unfinished ROM hack of Blue Sea... and when i say unfinished, i mean *unfinished*
the emerald one deleted my save just as I beat the elite 4 (ended up buying a legit one from gamestop later)
and the sapphire one had my first shiny which i tried to transfer up, but obviously my legit gen 4 game wouldn't recognize the cartridge... and then this save deleted itself too after the failed transfer
dude i got ripped off at a flea market once, i didnt even know there was fake games it was a pokemon platinum version ughh
Me with an anti piracy-ed measured copy of Pokemon Black in my backpack: :^
If I ever buy a fake, it's going to be one of the rom hacks like Outlaw
Sometimes specifically getting a reproduction cart is just more cost effective
Yeah, but it’s too much of a random chance for me so I just started using emulators
i actually bought a replica copy of Heart Gold (knowingly) at a gaming store once. It was cheaper plus in a more factory new condition so i bought it. the guy at the counter said it should run normally like an actual copy but then when i reached Goldenrod and tryed playing Voltorb Flip i got the same black screen as in this video.
Dude sounds like Benson from Regular Show.
You can move that save to your other cart bud.
Imagine my surprise when I found out the save feature had broken somewhere in the many hours before I got the shiny, when I tried to save and the game crashed
that replica had no soul...
If you can’t get a real copy just emulate it
"You'll end up like me" yeah, shiny hunting on a legit copy what horror...
I guess there will always be someone who misses the point
So, fake carts of HGSS, BW, and B2W2 are easy to spot because the originals come in a black cartridge. This is to signify that they have infrared capabilities. For HGSS, this was for the pokewalker. In BW and B2W2, it was for easier wireless gameplay, also for multi battle lines in the battle subway. Gen 5 also used IR communication for official tournaments and special event pokemon.
Right. I always just look for the shiny Nintendo seal.
I got twobfake copies of BW i onowbtheyvare fakebbecause in the SD card theres a smaller SD
I got my copy of black 2 for £63. games good but man that is steep
Imagine….. virtual console Pokemon games with online connectivity.
A pure reset of Pokemon in a way.
I would put my soul into soul silver again
Videos like this are really helpful for making sure I’m finding real copies of BW2, but my main problem is actually buying them cause yeah it’s still a lot
The issue is that for no reason soul silver and heart gold are so freaking expensive
“I’ve been shiny hunting” (doesn’t actually start the game until he gets a shiny starter)
so glad I got these as a kid and still have them.
Damn that's crazy, i guess my obsession woth buying fake games ends here
You can get around that by playing on a 3DS.
The cartridge comes with an IR receiver and the Pokéwalker has an IR emitter. Same technology the wii uses.
That’s why you should always homebrew :)
