- From www.swimmingpo... - Many swimming pool owners may think that their water has gone bad and the pool needs to be drained and refilled with fresh water. Usually, it is only an issue with poor water chemistry and not that the water has "gone bad". Draining and refilling a pool is rarely the right or necessary solution. Fixing the problem usually relies on water testing and correcting chemical levels. Proper water filtration, chemical balancing and regular maintenance will help keep the water clean and clear.

Love the info. My pool has always stayed crystal clear. Neighbors get upset but when I show them the easy way they wonder why the strugled. No one method works for all but filtration and water turnover seems to work the best.
With the huge chlorine shortage coming what can a pool owner do?
It seems that partially draining a pool and adding the correct chemicals will solve the majority of problems if necessary?
I was about to ask about salt. Thank you for answering that question before I could ask! What do you think about high calcium hardness? I’ve been thinking about replacing some of my water with fresh, low calcium water.
You can manage a pool with high calcium hardness, but once it gets over 800ppm, it's a good idea to start over. That is especially true if your fill water is high in CH. I recently plumbed in a line from my water softener so when I top up my pool, it's always with soft water. My CH hasn't budged in nearly 2 years.
High CYA is easily avoidable by ditching tablets an using only the minimum of cyanuric acid once yearly each spring. Elevated TDS is way over rated as a problem. I wouldn’t drain a drip of water because if high TDS unless the pool has having visible problems.
Dude get to point
I had to drain the entire pool bc the levels were off completely. The first time in years needing to do so. Glad I did bc it was bad bad!!
HI Steve, sorry for a question on a different subject but tried to find your most recent video to ask. I have a hayward 400DFN pool heater and im getting an IF code. I replaced the flame sensor, ignitor, cleaned out the gas line, removed the ports and cleaned all 8 one at a time and blew air into the holes. Im at a loss at this point. Its a 400000btu natural gas heater.
What if I have a high level of undissolved solids 😂😂😂
Every once in a few years I have an issue with my CYA converting to ammonia over the winter. Despite the insane amount of 12.5% liquid chlorine required to break through the ammonia (40 gallons in my case), it's still better than drain and fill compared to trucking in water (I'm on a well). My CH is 500-600 and would like to get it down but just going to wait for re-plaster job next year.
How do you know your CYA converted to ammonia? Is this something you have had diagnosed with water tests?
I have cracked tiles and signs of ground water penetration behind the tiles, so that could be how soil bacteria is getting into the pool in the first place.
The only way you could have that much ammonia is from a herd of elephants peeing in your pool
