This past winter we had -9 degrees temperatures for a few days, and below zero degrees for a week, and below freezing almost 3 months. I literally had an 18 foot (diameter) floating block of ice that eventually pulled the liner down, ripped-n-split the beading off and drained the entire pool when spring started to creep in. I had no choice in having an empty pool. That manufacture's liner warranty is good toilet paper by the way.
In Canada you might want to do the repair in May or October because if you do it in the middle of the winter the liner will be as brittle as glass. Plus you could get hypothermia.

Well.... I had to pull the trigger and drain my new 21' above ground pool.... I set it up Sunday and started filling it that evening, got about 2 feet in it by Monday evening (never left the water run over Sunday night) and noticed I had some serious ground work under the liner that needed to be fixed (two large divets occured somehow even though the ground was tamped, only thing I could think off was that we had a fair amount of rain Saturday and it loosened the soil somehow, I dunno), but I couldn't ignore it, had to be fixed. So I weighed the options and decided that since it was A. Brand new, B. Wasn't filled to the top, and C. The skimmer and return holes weren't yet cut out I started draining it late Monday evening... by noon today it was emptied down enough to let the liner loose.... the remaining 1/2" of water had to sucked out with a shopvac (no fun let me tell you!!).... by 7pm this evening liner was hung back up and the refill has started. So about 7 hours down before the refill started. Hope the liner will stretch out and no damage will occur.... fingers crossed!

So I started the siphon method, water started draining everything was going good and then it stopped with about 12 inches left. So I started looking for ways to get the rest of the water out and stumbled upon this video about not draining the water out. What do I do now? Did I damage my liner or not since there is about a foot to a foot and a half water left in the pool? Do I scoop out the debris, fill the pool with water and let the filter do the rest? Help!
No you are fine. This video has to do with steel wall pools with vinyl liners. Your pool is made from a different material and does not effect you. You will be fine to drain it.
Our pool bead liner popped out in about 8 areas when we refilled our above ground pool. After I was able to drain the remaining water and re-install bead liner it filled up just fine. Was a real hassle for a while though!

I have been servicing swimming pools for the past 18 years and have successfully drained and refilled above and inground pools... BUT the way I've always done it has been just like installing a new pool liner... As soon as water gets within a foot of shallowest part of pool floor, I'd pull a portion of liner from the track and apply a vaccuum to the pool to hold the liner tight against the pool walls the entire time the pool didn't have water in it. I wouldn't remove vaccuum suction from behind the liner from when water got less than a foot from shallowest bottom until pool was refilled to at least a foot of water over entire floor.
That's a really good idea Mark. We've drained several in our time as well, but usually try to do it in the winter months where the shrinking is less likely to occur and we drain it over night and then fill it back first thing in the morning.
I drained mine Wed night finished Friday draining and fixed a hole and refilled over weekend... biggest thing I made sure to do was keep liner wet with a sprinkler while filling it up... only one area in pool the liner pulled out but a ton of overhang behind to fold back over... that's why I was here was to see how to remove edge to fold back over...

We didn't realise it's dangerous to drain it. Is it safe to jump in abd scrub it or should it be done from the outside. The liner doesn't look like it shrinked it looks like it expanded.
We just took the cover off the 30' round above ground pool. The water level is about 1 and a half feet from the top and very clear!! I was so happy until I noticed the bead had come out at about 7 places around the pool and the liner was out. I got in the very cold water to see if I could put it back before I brought the water level up. I could not budge it....! How should I proceed???
Cindy Gilliand I may have to be the bearer of bad news, Cindy. First try to get it back in the track (which I guess didn't go so well). Next would be to drain the pool to get the water weight out of the picture and place the liner back in the track and the quickly refill the pool, but this method may even make the situation worse by shrinking up the liner even further. Worse case is that you would have to replace the liner. If this is the case, I highly recommend not going back with a liner that fits in the track. I would throw that track away and go with a different style of liner. If you go with an in-the-track-beaded liner, this may happen again to you down the road. If you do not, then this will never happen again.
Last fall I took my above ground pool completely down, have been told since then that I probably ruined a good liner by taking it down, as most videos do. This was the first year, any suggestions by anyone for this situation ? I had water in my pool for 3 years. Last summer it kept getting green on parts of the side & bottom corners. I used chemicals & kept chlorine in it, but had the same problem all summer. So I drained it during the fall. It's got about 4-5" of water now. I was going to drain it all so I can clean it in the spring. Maybe not now. The liner seems fine & I keep pushing it up to the sides when I'm in it. If it's algea, I don't know how to remove it without cleaning it.
I have a brand new pool, and it is leaking somewhere. the pool installer suggested i drain it, and he will go underneath the liner in an effort to find daylight and see where the hole is. Will my liner rest back into place if he patches it from below? it is literally 10 days old

We had a house fire back in August 2011 and we had no way of running the pump due to no electricity, we just thre a bunch of chlorine in there and put the cover on. We moved back into the house in May of 2012 but haven't opened the pool yet. We took cover off today and the water is nasty, had a dead squirrel in it along with branches and leaves. The liner either needs replaced or a scrubbing. How would you go about getting the water out to clean the liner and start with fresh water?
Mary Ann Landa Keep in mind that if you drain the water, the liner will be ruined and you will have to replace it, so you will need to decided if you want to tackle cleaning it up or draining it and starting from scratch with new water, but also the cost of a new liner. Hi I have a 24 round above ground pool ,it's 3 years old and I noticed a 2 foot section of the line is off and it's pulling down.do I have to drain the pool in order to stretch the liner back up on the wall edge. Help thanks
Ralph Amann That's a tricky situation. If you can pull the liner up and get it back in the track, then you're good. If you can't because of the water weight, you will have to drain the pool to do it, but then the draining may ruin the liner and the liner may pull off worse as you refill it.
Our pool frame has been shifted by ground that moves a bit every spring, now the pool pushed against our deck on the one side, we were thinking of draining it so we could pull it back to its intended position, but this will be impossible without draining the pool, what do you suggest?
+Mira G You will have to drain it to fix this situation. I would recommend you drain it over night and fix the pool and refill it ASAP. This is your best defense against ruining the liner, but not a guarentee.

Unfortunately it doesn't sound like you have a big choice on what to do. It would be wise to try and get a foot or two of water in it if you are going to try and save the liner, otherwise you may be putting a new liner in it in the spring. Also, water in the pool will give the pool more stregth in case you get a bad wind storm this winter.

I'm in Maine with the exact same setup. Mine is 18'x4'. This is my first season with this pool. I have absolutely no option but to completely disassemble and store it until late spring. My liner was way larger than needed, so I'm not at all worried. The manual says NOT to leave it up all winter, so it must be made for disassembly and storage.

HI Chad My friend gave us his 20 yr old Johnny Weissmuller 15x30 foot pool with extruded? aluminum wall. Here is the problem. To empty it he shot it up with a 22 . Probably 20 holes. Now, I planned on getting a new liner but, can I patch the bullet holes and reuse the wall? The pool is in otherwise remarkable condition. Not one speck of rust on anything including hardware. +Catherine Egan Yikes. Johnny Weissmuller are good pools and if you patch up the tiny holes you should be OK unless there is extensive damage to the walls. The liner will need to be replaced though.
ok I have a 16x48 Coleman swimming pool that bought from Walmart with a cartridge pump. Is it ok to drain the water to clean my liner or will it be messed up?
I need to replace my return jet, it is cracked and leaking some, obviously I need to drain it down just below the jet (25-30% of the water I'm assuming). Is there a danger of shrinkage by doing this or will it have enough water still to maintain the integrity of the liner while I'm switching it out?
You don't have to lower the water at all for that.you can use expansion plugs to close off the old & while putting in the new & about 2 seconds will the water come through the hole when inserting the new housing.I have shut off valves on the return & out which stops water siphoning out of the skimmer for any kind of plumbing work.I also put a ring of silicone caulk around the return between thee wall & liner so water wouldn't get between the wall & liner for future work.
A friend of mine is moving and has decided to gift their pool to us. It's only a yr old, with it being the beginning of winter we were going to wait to put the pool back up until spring. Is there anything we can do to store the liner to make sure this doesn't happen?
+Cassie Lynch Just store it away safely to prevent holes. It really depends on a lot whether its going to work or not (how did it fit in the pool before, was the liner oversized or undersized, did they do a good job cutting out the skimmer/return). There's no real way to tell. You could try it when you install the pool and see how it goes, but if you have the money for a new liner, then that's what I recommend. No one wants to put a liner in twice, in case the original doesn't work.

+Alan Arner On a pool that size I like about 70 degrees for the liner install. Keep in mind that water in the pool gives the pool its strength, so it would be best to keep some water in it until you can replace it so it doesn't get damaged during the winter. It would be good if it was possible to patch the tear and add a foot of water.
hi I just bought a coleman 12 foot round pool for my backyard and I am kinda scared of installing it cause of some bad reviews I read about them having leaks and stuff after the purchase. I have never set up a pool before in my life and now im kinda scared of the this thing either collapsing in the middle of the night/how to drain this thing and what not. any advice to calm me down about the fears I have of owning a above ground pool that's gonna be built really close to the house?
Ummm... I hope not. It really is going to depend on how that liner fit in that pool from the start. If it didn't have to stretch very much then you may be Ok, but if the liner had to stretch a lot, then maybe not. You could tell by how far the liner has moved off the wall of the pool. If there is a great deal of space between the liner and the wall of the pool, then the liner has shrunk and probably won't work. If the liner is very close to the wall of the pool, then the liner has not shrunk much and you may be fine.
abovegroundpros the liner seems to wrinkled so it looks like it has room to expend once water goes back in tomorrow...pool guy is coming over to fill in a sink hole under the liner we think caused by chipmunks!

I'm in Maine with the exact same setup. Mine is 18'x4'. This is my first season with this pool. I have absolutely no option but to completely disassemble and store it until late spring. My liner was way larger than needed, so I'm not at all worried. The manual says NOT to leave it up all winter, so it must be made for disassembly and storage.

HI Chad My friend gave us his 20 yr old Johnny Weissmuller 15x30 foot pool with extruded? aluminum wall. Here is the problem. To empty it he shot it up with a 22 . Probably 20 holes. Now, I planned on getting a new liner but, can I patch the bullet holes and reuse the wall? The pool is in otherwise remarkable condition. Not one speck of rust on anything including hardware. +Catherine Egan Yikes. Johnny Weissmuller are good pools and if you patch up the tiny holes you should be OK unless there is extensive damage to the walls. The liner will need to be replaced though.
ok I have a 16x48 Coleman swimming pool that bought from Walmart with a cartridge pump. Is it ok to drain the water to clean my liner or will it be messed up?
+Shannon Palmer you can drain and refill those pools as much as you like. It won't affect your liner at all.
I need to replace my return jet, it is cracked and leaking some, obviously I need to drain it down just below the jet (25-30% of the water I'm assuming). Is there a danger of shrinkage by doing this or will it have enough water still to maintain the integrity of the liner while I'm switching it out?

You don't have to lower the water at all for that.you can use expansion plugs to close off the old & while putting in the new & about 2 seconds will the water come through the hole when inserting the new housing.I have shut off valves on the return & out which stops water siphoning out of the skimmer for any kind of plumbing work.I also put a ring of silicone caulk around the return between thee wall & liner so water wouldn't get between the wall & liner for future work.
A friend of mine is moving and has decided to gift their pool to us. It's only a yr old, with it being the beginning of winter we were going to wait to put the pool back up until spring. Is there anything we can do to store the liner to make sure this doesn't happen?
+Cassie Lynch Just store it away safely to prevent holes. It really depends on a lot whether its going to work or not (how did it fit in the pool before, was the liner oversized or undersized, did they do a good job cutting out the skimmer/return). There's no real way to tell. You could try it when you install the pool and see how it goes, but if you have the money for a new liner, then that's what I recommend. No one wants to put a liner in twice, in case the original doesn't work.
I have a 27 foot above ground pool the liner has ripped the pool is now empty in the whole pool is whipping in the wind and it we are approaching winter would it be okay to install a new liner with low temperatures
+Alan Arner On a pool that size I like about 70 degrees for the liner install. Keep in mind that water in the pool gives the pool its strength, so it would be best to keep some water in it until you can replace it so it doesn't get damaged during the winter. It would be good if it was possible to patch the tear and add a foot of water.
Liner is not able to be patched.
And temperatures will not exceed 40 until next spring.

hi I just bought a coleman 12 foot round pool for my backyard and I am kinda scared of installing it cause of some bad reviews I read about them having leaks and stuff after the purchase. I have never set up a pool before in my life and now im kinda scared of the this thing either collapsing in the middle of the night/how to drain this thing and what not. any advice to calm me down about the fears I have of owning a above ground pool that's gonna be built really close to the house?

Ummm... I hope not. It really is going to depend on how that liner fit in that pool from the start. If it didn't have to stretch very much then you may be Ok, but if the liner had to stretch a lot, then maybe not. You could tell by how far the liner has moved off the wall of the pool. If there is a great deal of space between the liner and the wall of the pool, then the liner has shrunk and probably won't work. If the liner is very close to the wall of the pool, then the liner has not shrunk much and you may be fine.
abovegroundpros the liner seems to wrinkled so it looks like it has room to expend once water goes back in tomorrow...pool guy is coming over to fill in a sink hole under the liner we think caused by chipmunks!
MacKenzie Dodge yeah now that re-read your answer I went out to check and I am pretty sure I will need to replace the liner..now I need to scream at my pool guy, why the heck did he tell us to drain our pool and call him once it was empty but then wait a week to come fix our sink hole!!!!!!!!!!!!
MacKenzie Dodge That pool guy is responsible to pay for and put in the new liner. dude if you drain it to clean it quick and start filling it right back better when its not real hot out the sun is your enemy.Now let it be without water for 2 or 3 days never mind a week your screwed and when you put water in the liner will not stretch trust i learned the hard way i now no but did it many times but your whole pool might collapse that dude is an idiot whoever told you that make sure you let him no you ain't stupid liner no joke my shit cost me 500 easy
Ok so one video you say drain the pool and give different ways to do it it's cool right! but then on this video you say draining the pool is bad! I drained my pool on the advice of it being ok from your first video I watched. I hope I didn't ruin my liner!
The how to drain video is for people who will be draining there pools to move them or replace liners. How to get the water out is a question I constantly recieve.
