Brendon Hartley: The Unluckiest F1 Driver Ever? Ft.

  • Brendon Hartley's short-lived F1 career was rather forgettable to say the least. That was, of course, until now. He's had so much success in other premier motorsports, but just not in F1 - but why?

      I feel like Kobayashi could have been a solid midfielder if given more of a chance in F1, I'm still salty Sauber dropped him for someone mind you who hasn't and still hasn't done jack shit/anything noteworthy, well maybe being a current test/sim driver for Mercedes, since his GP3/F3 days (Gutierrez) which is why I never liked Sauber after that, them dropping 2018 IMSA DPi champ Nasr solidified my dislike or hate for them. Glad Kobayashi has found success though in Endurance Racing because he's a jet there, he's running the 24 hours of Spa too in a few weeks.

      At least Hartley can say he raced in F1, something many young drivers vy for but sadly less than 5 percent of them will ever get a chance and even then they may not be fair ones either which is why GT, Endurance Racing etc is in my eyes the future place for young drivers to make it big in and no longer F1 anymore. I can name couple of drivers I liked that never got a fair shot in F1 i.e Nasr, Sitrotkin, Wehrlein, Vandoorne etc.

    Id still take Scott Dixon over Brendon Hartley in terms of Kiwi open wheen drivers. Dude has literally been knighted in New Zealand.
    But you forgot to mention that he was signed by Chip Ganassi to partner with fellow Kiwi Scott Dixon in IndyCar(the ride Felix Rosenqvist now has) and Red Bull bought out his contract before he ever even sat in the car so he can run at Toro Rosso. So, he could have had one of the premiere indycar seats and got to run a Toro Rosso shit box instead. The only winner in that deal was Chip Gannasi... Who was reportedly paid well to buy out Hartley's services.... Of course, Ganassi had to then hire Ed Jones.. And... That didn't go well.
    Hartley has had some incredibly bone headed moves in sports cars too. Him being in a P1 running over some GT car is something that has happened quite a few times with him behind the wheel... But hey, got that Le Mans win!

He works along side Peter Rees from rees race cars to build these cars. And is the most successful stockcar and superstock builder in New Zealand. With over 400 stockcars and 200 superstocks in New Zealand. Is not a small time sport. Look up New Zealand superstock teams. And you will see how busy he can get especially on teams weekend.

    I think the problem really rooted to mindsets that "F1 is everything".
    Hartley was sign for Chip Ganassi Racing for 2018 IndyCar season, which one of team i consider as "dominating". Imagine getting a seat where top 10 finished were guaranteed, winning is a possibility on regular basis, and a team that had very good track record at Indy500. hell as someone that seeks opportunity i wouldn't waste it because when you're shine with Ganassi, you're motorsport career would've least been guaranteed a joyful living. Then he threw it away for a seat in f1's mid-to-back markers team... (Sure Gasly won the italian GP in 2020, and took 6th place in bahrain 2018. But the performance of Toro Rosso during those time were not-so-much-great compare to "wow he took pole for Indy500").
    I was hoping f2 prodigee could learn of this and look for the value of racing in a series before even thinking put a drive there. Guys at Formula E are already told many drivers that going to F1 are either could be your best decision or worse decision of your life

    • @JohnWarren
      @JohnWarren  3 роки тому +1

      I agree with you here - I have huge respect for IndyCar, especially oval racing, as being that close to each other at 220 mph is scary at the best of times. And there’s definitely a mindset that F1 is the ultimate goal, and I still believe that that’s the mindset of most people, including myself up until recently. I guess this was just another of Hartley’s unfortunate decisions.

    He is a driver who seemed like he had some good skill behind the wheel but just wasn't good enough to be called the top 20 drivers in the world.
    Yes bad timing but he should be happy for getting a chance at f1 at such a late age and also finding success in WEC and other endurance series.
    I didnt follow the sport as much a decade ago as I do now but compare him to the current f2 field and he would be bang average - perhaps comparing him to Jehan Deruvala a current red bull junior who's showing a bit of promise but isn't there with the big boys just yet.
    Only 4 or 5 guys max in the current f2 field will eventually get a shot in f1, just how it is atm with lots of young drivers cementing their place like Leclerc Gasly Sainz Stroll Russell and lloris who will be in the sport for the next decade.

    • @JohnWarren
      @JohnWarren  3 роки тому +1

      I agree - he definitely had ENOUGH skill but he was perhaps not as worthy as some others who had a shot at that seat. I think what sets him apart is his age and experience with Red Bull as a team - having worked with them since, well, forever, he should have had a good grasp on what the team wanted. Shame they got rid of him to be honest.

    Worst thing for Hartley that year was that every time it looked like he was on for a good result bad luck stepped in. He never had a chance to build any momentum.
    Just look at Canada. He gets an engine upgrade with more power, shows great pace throughout the weekend only to get taken out due to no fault of his own after a 1/3 of a lap. Dude was just cursed that season.
