    The worst thing out of all this is that it tainted Oscar's first win. Notice how McLaren's sloppy strategy and emotional blackmailing of Lando is getting more discussion than Oscar's first win. I feel for the guy.

      Realistically if you have a competitive mindset, you get on the radio and tell the team that you don't want the swap and that Lando can keep the lead cause the gifted win just wouldn't feel good. But Oscar is too nice for that.
      Also it's concerning to see how many people don't see that it was actually unfair to Lando (regardless of the championship points).

      I reminded of how Carlos Sainz has said how he treats Singapore last year as his first true win, as his first actual win at Silverstone in 2022, was (like Piastri here) marred by inter-team controversy and bad strategy from the team calls that made the win feel tainted and undeserved.
      Hopefully Piastri, like Sainz, will hopefully get another win down the line that will wash the bitter taste of this one away, still not a great sign though that were comparing McLaren to 2022 Ferrari.

      @@viniciusbraga9881 I am Oscar's fan but I'm afraid that the team now will support Norris and I don't see Oscar having the chance. I do hope Oscar shut my mouth and have another win but now the team will try to give, like it's been doing, all the support to Norris based in his "sacrifice" he did in the Hungaroring. I don't think there is a chance for Norris getting the champ... not in a million years.. Highly unlikely that he would have had overtaken Oscar on track, the speed advantage of 1-2 tenths a lap that Lando had wasn't really enough to overtake on this track. McLaren should never be asking a driver who still has a chance of winning the championship this year to give up points to his teammate. McLaren's reasoning for why it was important to switch the drivers back doesn't even make much sense. Covering Lewis? Give me a break. "Re-establishing the rightful order?" Being "better prepared in case there's a full course yellow"?! You can't be serious -_-
      They are just being stubborn incompetent bosses who put too much value on their employees following orders, and who were too arrogant, stubborn, and inflexible to admit that they had made a mistake.
      Worst of all is just that they created unnecessary drama and sent a clear message to Lando that they don't believe he can win the championship.
      Once Piastri nearly lost it and lost more time, they should have just given up on asking them to switch places. It's one thing to ask your drivers to switch places when they're right next to each other, but Norris was already significantly ahead of Piastri

      To be fair, the constructors is the bigger picture. There's no prize money associated with a driver winning the championship as it's one of the more interesting conundrums in F1. The prestige and the glory comes with the driver winning the championship based on the driver's individual performance. However, the amount of prize money that a team gets is based on their standing in the constructors which is dependent on how well both drivers perform.

      If I remember correctly Jenson built up a healthy points gap in the earlier part of that season though. It got more difficult as the season went on because Brawn didn't have the funds to upgrade the car if my memory serves me right. I feel like it's gonna be a similar story this year with Verstappen and that gap he built up earlier in the season might just be enough for him to clinch it (Assuming he keeps a cool head and doesn't throw points away like he did in Hungary of course!). I still think it's Max's championship to lose for sure!

    The problem from Lando's point of view is that if you hand back the place you look like someone who's too much of a 'nice guy' to win a title. Senna, Schumacher, Alonso, Verstappen, Hamilton, Vettel? None of them would have complied, and while there'd be a bit of moaning about it in the immediate aftermath, in the long term they'd do themselves some good by showing everyone they had the killer instinct required to go all the way. You don't want to end up with people seeing you in the same light as Coulthard or Barrichello, too nice and selfless to really succeed.

    What I don't understand is why they gave both cars conflicting messages. They told Lando earlier in the race he was free to race Oscar (I think they literally said on the radio 'You're free to race the papaya car') only to change their mind later on and they also told Oscar at his final pitstop not to worry about Lando because he'll give the place back. Once again McLaren made this more difficult for themselves then they had to. Lando not giving the place up immediately certainly felt like him sending a message and trying to mark his territory in the team. You make a good point about Oscar too, he drove a great race in Hungary and if that's a sign of things to come from him he needs to keep showing the team he's not there to be Lando's wingman, he's there to win!

The title is unlikely to come down to these 7 points, and Piastri is more likely to give him more support in the future now if it does too…but a downward media spiral is almost certain to hurt him even financially. Back when seb did this neither sponsorships nor social media were as much of a thing.

    For the rest of the season Oscar will be team player, In this situation you give Oscar his first win, You still gain points over Max and have a good teammate relationship.
    Not quite to the same level but Oscar will have to play the role of 2021 Sergio Perez, Especially for the last 3-4 races, For the next 7 you will have a fair fight but Lando needs to sacrifice this one to reap the rewards at the end of the season when Oscar will be more willing to have his race goal as "slow down Max" instead of "Win"
    Oscar had a good but tough 2023, It was clear Lando was better all round, 2024 is much closer, The win is a weight off his shoulder and perhaps he will win the next one or two but in the final few races he has to remember what Lando was willing to do, It's a strong bargaining chip.

    The worst thing is that most people don't even realize that Lando wouldn't have the chance to win if they pitted them in the correct order. The undercut is about 2-3 seconds, Oscar was already about 2 seconds ahead. That makes a gap of 4-5 seconds for Lando to cut down on. For the whole final stint, Lando made about 4 seconds to Oscar, who was probably more focused on "am I going to get this win stolen away from me" rather than driving. But even if this was the pace difference, Lando would only be able to close up to Oscar, without even having the opportunity for an overtake attempt. So Oscar does fully deserve this win, but now it feels like it was given to him. Very dumb decision by McLaren, they're playing things like they're trying to steal a win from the fastest car, rather than actually having the fastest car.

    The radio from McLaren should’ve been something like:
    “Ok, Lando. We have a sufficient gap to Hamilton, so let Oscar pass now and then you’re free to fight. Just keep it clean and don’t hold us up too much.”
    This way it gives Lando the information, Oscar the position and doesn’t demoralise Lando, as he’s allowed to utilise his pace and win on merit, it also doesn’t cause any friction between the drivers (unless they crash).

    It's quite sad to see that all the champions of the past have had a toxic and/or dominant relationship with their teammates. Since Mclaren have a car that is absolutely dominant, I totally agree with Mclaren's decision just because I wish to see a wholesome and fair competition between teammates. This situation has come so close to what happened with Hamilton and Rosberg where Mclaren could easily loose Piastri if they're not careful.

    It’s hilarious how Lando is being told to be a team player and think of the bigger picture, yet we only got to that situation because Oscar wasn’t at the start. He had a simple job: keep max in check and give Lando clean air. Lando got pole, he didn’t. And a race goes over 305km, not 400m, it’s shameful for McLaren to order Lando to stay behind because Oscar did better for 0.1% of the race, even though Lando did better for the remaining 99.9%, just held back by team orders during the first stint. The fact is, right now Lando is the number 1, in the team and McLarens best chance on a clean sweep of both championships. But he’s lacking what Lewis and max have: support from the one person on track that should have his back, like he had his. Right now, Lando has gifted Oscar 2 wins. Oscar is yet to return the favor. If Oscar isn’t playing the team game, Lando needs to stop playing it too. Take the win, close the gap in the first stint already and overtake straight away. He had the pace from lap one, he shouldn’t have held back.

      The bigger picture is the driver's championship, and McLaren just ordered their #1 driver to give away points in the driver's championship race because... because why exactly? Their reasoning doesn't even make sense. They gave three different reasons, none of which should matter anywhere near as much to them as the DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP, the thing that all their people have been laboring hard for over a decade to try to be able to contest again. This isn't a soccer team for 10 year olds where you want to give different kids a chance to play striker, or goalkeeper, even though they may not be the best in that position. This is top-tier professional auto sports, and it's taken them many years and enormous amounts of capital investment to get a car that's the fastest on the grid, and they're ordering their drivers to take turns getting wins?
      Did someone put MDMA into their tea?!! You're not supposed to do that until AFTER the race weekend is over, and preferably with at least a two week break before the next race weekend!

There was never the need to pit Lando first in the first place.

  • @HavokR505

    the problem with this whole thing was the bickering. he should have just said, "look were ganna finish 1-2. I wanna fight for the championship. sorry to Oscar but this is what I am doing and thats final"
    just as well maybe 6-7 races later if the championship was already decided, Norris could legit just act like a 2nd driver to the service of Oscar to pay him back. not only would he get what he wants but he would also be giving Oscar something higher in return.

    • @eznorelol1174
      @eznorelol1174 2 місяці тому

      That's the thing. The championship won't be decided in 6 or 7 races. Max is still Max and even for as bad as a downfall as Red Bull are having, he will still be scoring podiums I would say almost consistently, and it doesn't help that Lando can't seem to consistently win on the fastest car either. Lando might as well had let Oscar by in this race or have to fight for the championship completely by himself, no team help. He's gonna need it, I'm telling you, it's not the last time Oscar will be ahead of Norris this season.

    • @gabrielnunez7623
      @gabrielnunez7623 2 місяці тому

      This is the problem with people who don't think and just peddle narratives without any substance. Lando needs to outscore Max by 7 points throughout the next 11 race to win it, or Max DNF 3 times while Lando wins those. If you think Lando will win 11 in a row, or Max won't win another single race the whole rest of the year, or that Merc/Ferrari won't take points from either team (to Max's benefit) then you're high af.

  • @yhbarve
    @yhbarve 2 місяці тому +3

    There are 11 races left in the season. Lando is behind Max by 76 points. So, on average he needs to score 7 points more than Max in every race. This is the difference between finishing in P1 vs P2. So, if Lando won every race and Max finished P2, Lando would still win the championship. And with how bad Max is making the Red Bull look, it is very difficult to assume that he might finish at least P2 in every race. This eases some pressure off Lando too.

    What Norris should've done is let Piastri back through straight away, as instructed, but then fought him back on track. Norris was faster in the last stint, and the pair were already told they could fight each other before the pitstop happened. Anyway, I'm happy Piastri won, big fan of his.
    But the whole scene was definitely caused by Mclaren's strategy, once again. Norris' race engineer especially is a bit of a flake. Like in Silverstone when he offered Norris the choice of tyre at the last stop. Surely a decent race engineer could see that softs would struggle to reach the end of the race. Of course Norris would want the faster tyre, but it's up to the strategy department to predict how long they could last. They kept a brand new set of mediums for him but never even used them...

  • @LiamJM10
    @LiamJM10 2 місяці тому

    I'm not sure I agree with your take that having a strong and co-operative number 2 is overrated. If Lando has any chance of winning the title, he absolutely needs Oscar on side. The team should be having meetings this week stating that both have proven they're team players, they have the best car right now and the priority from Spa onwards should be Lando's title fight. Because if McLaren can achieve 1-2s with Lando wins (even if it's team orders) they will dig huge gaps into Max's lead, and that doesn't factor in that Max may not even finish as the best of the rest.
    The team fucked up in Hungary, but Lando did the right thing. The 7 points he lost will be nothing if McLaren go on some Red Bull like streak of dominance until the end of the season. And that's not too crazy to say given they've won 2 races, but had the pace to win pretty much every race after Miami.
    I'm more surprised Lando didn't play the championship narrative on the radio. I think with Max struggling at the weekend and Lando inheriting the lead, it would have made it far easier to stomach for viewers had he made that argument instead of resisting for the sake of it.

    I was all in on this video being the best balanced take I’d seen on this whole mess until the final section. I agree people wouldn’t have the same questions about Lewis; Alonso or Max but to put Charles in that category with the number of mistakes he’s made is a bit wild.
    Points gap is huge but with the way the top 4 are so close it’s not outwith the realms of possibility that max has more races where he’s off the podium. If Norris loses out on the WDC it’s mainly down to the shocking pitfall strategies of Canada and Silverstone. If they’d got those right then the points gap would be so much closer that I think the call on this race would have been much more difficult for McLaren to make

    I can understand all of the reasons for Norris being forced to yield first back to Oscar.
    From the idea that the swap could and should have been done IMMEDIATELY instead of left to become messy, and also the idea that you need to build trust that your teammate and team will go above and beyond to help when you need them most.
    However....
    Emotional blackmail and gaslighting isn't the way to do it.
    Relying on your driver to undo the error in judgement that you made as a team isn't the way to do it.
    Showing your drivers you have a reluctance to own the mistake and apologise to the driver affected isn't the way to do it.
    Allowing the driver affected by the lapse in judgement to accept it as THEIR error and apologise, essentially on your behalf, for "making it more difficult than it needed to be" isn't the way to do it.
    Seriously, what are McLaren trying to imply to the rest of the teams with this? Lando is mathematically within a shot of a WDC and they're on course to close into and take the WCC at this rate.
    Either they don't back themselves to continue this trajectory, don't trust Lando to seal the deal on the championship, or are confident that Red Bull can and will improve after the Summer break...
