That was none other than THE man himself, Gregg Allman, in the front row, giving a standing ovation (pretty sure he was the dude with the grayed hair, pulled back in a ponytail). This tribute concert was in 2015 and Gregg passed in 2017. Pretty damned big deal when the original artist gives you a standing ovation-same when Chris did “Shameless” at the Garth Brooks Tribute show. Chris also nailed the US National Anthem at the Super Bowl. And I 100% agree, it’s so weird how he absolutely sounds WAY better live than recorded. They need to do something about the over engineering of his songs and bring out more of his raw voice when they mic him in the studio.
LORT, this song brings back a LOT of memories for me from the early 70's, what I can remember! lol. . Got to see the Allman brothers in Ga in 1977, saw Chris when he was with the Steeldrivers and Jompson Brothers and here he is killing the BEST allman Brothers version of whipping post ever. No matter what Chris sings, he makes it his own. DANG, who was the bald dude tearing up the guitar??
That's some serious soul rock country fusion...agreed- he is a real deal gifted musician and his band is raw power talent too. Makes me think about how a Beth Hart- Chris Stapleton concert would be- duets galore included of course.🙌🏻
This was a genuinely outstanding performance by the highly talented Chris Stapleton. The backing band, especially the lead guitarist, was superb. Having first seen the Allman Brothers live in 1969 at Penn State University, I became a big fan of the Allman Brothers for all these years. This performance is second only to the Allmans themselves, and that is saying a lot (for me). Harri, this was one of your best reviews. Bravo to both of you! A sterling 5 Lava Lamps from me.
I'm pretty picky about the country artists that I like, and I LOVE Chris Stapleton! I also love the Allman Bros, and Chris does this iconic song justice for sure! Somehow I have never seen this performance so thanks for sharing it!
The lead guitarist is killing it too. And the drummer is probably a studio sessions player, the horn section and the slide guitarist are top shelf too. But this is what it takes to due this Allman Brothers song justice.
This is a beautiful tribute to the Allman brothers. What better choice than Chris Stapleton to lend his wonderful guitar expertise and his riveting southern vocals to master this tune. Fantastic live performance. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Anne. 👏👏🎶🎶 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
My father back in the early 70s was into Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers and many other 60 70 rock groups. So I have a little background on this song was written I Believe by Dickey Betts Gregg Allman's brother he died early, certainly it's on the web. Thank you for producing the objective critique.
We're proud of our southern rockers here in the US! We do have what I consider one of the best lyricists alive now in Colin Meloy of The Decemberists...I would love to see what you think of the story song he wrote called Mariner's Revenge....I rarely see that show up in reaction videos. Calamity Song is one that applies so well to the current day and age although its not a very new song....would you take a look at those? I've gotta say, more often than not, whenever I steer someone towards The Decemberists, they are shocked at how good they are and have never really been mainstream!
Hearing a lot about Chris Stapleton lately. The performance with Stevie Wonder at the Grammys shook a lot of seat cushions and now with "Whipping Post" I can see why.
Some of his other covers that are S tier are It's A Man's Man's Man's World (James Brown), Nothing Compares To You (Prince), Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd), I Ain't Livin'Long Like This (Waylon Jennings), I Want Love (Elton John), Nothing Else Matters (Metallica). The man is a phenom.
The bald guy on guitar put this whole thing together...he is a studio musician and producer...i think his last name is Greenberg, maybe somebody knows out there...good as always Harri.
This is the cover I didn’t even know I needed. Stapleton and a ridiculous band just destroying an Allman Bros song. This was mind blowing. I’m in shock .
Been listening to this since I found it a few months ago. Great cover of the song, from a traditional standpoint, e.g. not a bluegrass version or a version with horns. Very decent sound recording, solid guitar solos and enough gravel on the voice to make it worthy. The version by the Brothers at the MSG show in '20 is probably the best cover, though it's arguably not a cover given who played that night.
Greg Allman will always own this song BUT, just like he does with every "cover" Chris does, he puts his own style on it. And when you are you're own Genre, you can pretty much make everything killer.
Greg Allman was in the front row for this performance and gave Chris a standing ovation.
Love that!
He certainly does it justice!
that was Gregg Allman giving them a standing ovation at the end.
Gives me chills...Luv Chris...

Loved this!!! Great reaction!
That was Gregg Allman in the front row that gave Chris a standing ovation
He is a serious gift to the music world. Great, great reaction Harri!
Chris is always best tasted live. Peace, Love!!
Chris and his band does "Whipping Post" justice. One of the best songs EVER. Thanks!!
Amazingly that’s not even his band!
I seen many covers of this song, but many do not have the power behind the voice, like Gregg Allman had, but here, Chris does it justice.....
I'm pretty picky about the country artists that I like, and I LOVE Chris Stapleton! I also love the Allman Bros, and Chris does this iconic song justice for sure! Somehow I have never seen this performance so thanks for sharing it!

Chris Stapleton is Legit. I am so impressed by what little I have heard from him so far that I must know more.
😂😂😂…great job. That’s real rock and southern flavors. Reminds of Lynard Skynard.
Great cover. Even Greg Allman loved it!!
What a great review! I felt like you would love it. I too find myself needing to take a breath. I loved your reaction.
That poor drummer is doing the work of two.....props to the man on the sticks

Chris,ROCKED this and it's a Man's World. Gotz da Blues!!!!
One word: FIRE! Great selection, Ann, of this cover of one of the best songs ever! Loved your reaction, too, Harri!
🥰😍🤩
Love your reaction .
Quite climatic Harri, awesome!
Oh my God ... No one can beat Gregg Allman, but this man equals him. What an homage!

bold version of the allman brothers standard, great use of horns!
Absolutely Fabulous!!!!
Greatness!
Amen, brother!!! Amen! Standing O, for real!
They’re cookin’ with grease 😎
Thank you!
Thanx so much Ann 🖤✌🏾

The bass player is none other than the great Willie Weeks 😄
Always great, sir. This song is just legendary.
Amazing
Forgot just how good this one is. Thx for stopping. I also need to catch my breath.
Band was 🔥!
Chris is a talented and any man could be but that band was great as well. Nobody can be Duane and Dicky but they did an awesome job.
The bald guy on guitar put this whole thing together...he is a studio musician and producer...i think his last name is Greenberg, maybe somebody knows out there...good as always Harri.
I knew it would be great but holy 💩🔥❤️
His wife is a lucky woman.. he is amazing
Holyshit I swear my butt length hair just stood on end as my 7th chakra exploded. Dayyyyam😮😮😮
Gregg Allman was there at the end at 8 min mark
This is a spot on PISS TIGHT cover! Just listen to the music alone without the vocal and it it PISS TIGHT! WOW!!!
This is the cover I didn’t even know I needed. Stapleton and a ridiculous band just destroying an Allman Bros song. This was mind blowing. I’m in shock .
A bit of pressure playing in front of the man himself, Gregg Allman. I’m sure he was impressed.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Man is there a better player in the game right now?? Chris Stapleton straight up slays this song! Daaammmmnnnn smokey!!!!
This is nice but you can not beat the agony of the Allman Brothers version.
Greg Allman will always own this song BUT, just like he does with every "cover" Chris does, he puts his own style on it. And when you are you're own Genre, you can pretty much make everything killer.
Check out the Steeldrivers.
You have to see the original one.
Good version though nothing compares to the original with Greg’s incredible voice
