Lenny Welch's remake of this 1954 tune, received the highest profile in 1963 after his release. Within 8 weeks of his recording, Lenny's version was charting in the San Fransico area, before jumping up to Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Lenny's strong smooth voice delivers the emotional lyrics, with the lush arrangement, especially the string section, making this a sensational old tune. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Beautiful memory Cynthia ❤ 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
The '54 version by Buddy & Ella Johnson was more of a bluesy jazz number (Buddy wrote the song); Welch turned it into a rich, sentimental "crooner" ballad. The Johnson track is very, very good, but this version just sends it to the stratosphere.
Great pick, Cynthia! The man's voice is silky smooth. Of course, it was the September 1962 cover of "A Taste of Honey" that The Beatles used as a blueprint for their own version. But, back to Lenny. What a voice! Thanks Cynthia & Harri.
This was by far...one of the most romantic, beautiful love songs; performed by such a perfect voice....The WORDS ARE PERFECT....all the way. His sound is unforgettable. Thanks. I FORGOT TO ADD....THE CHILLS of just hearing this.
Lenny Welch is fortunately still with us (& a Facebook friend of mine!). I had the pleasure of meeting him in person back in the early 80s when he appeared at the Kutsher's Hotel in the Catskills in upstate New York. My (ex) husband and I had to use the restrooms before the concert, and who walked out of the men's room? Lenny Welch himself. We told him how much we enjoyed his singing and he backed away, apologizing that he had a bad cold and didn't want to get us sick. I asked him if he was going to sing my favorite song by him, "I Need Someone" (you must listen to this beautiful song on UA-cam!), and he was absolutely shocked that I knew the song! I told him that I was known as The Doo-Wopp Queen of the Bronx, and, therefore loved all his songs. He apologized for not having the song prepared for that night's concert, but would consider adding it in the future. He is a perfect gentleman with a sweet voice!
Wonderful song and singer. Believe it or not, the other best version of this song was by Charlie Rich. His version is very smooth and soulful, and well worth a listen.
Finally, I know who sang this fantastic song. Thank you, Cynthia and a stellar submission to be sure. Now I have to get chestnuts to roast over an open fire. Harri, your review and commentary were terrific.
Another string reconnecting me with my '60's self and life. I got the blues listening to this amazing recording you have of this music and voice. I have noticed, since listening to your episodes that many songs of this era have a violin accompaniment. A sound of the times I didn't really notice at the time. Thanks Harri.
Thank you for the fantastic reaction Harri but I agree I would never want to listen to this If I was in a bad relationship I’d be blubbering away. Lol.
Harri, Bonnie Raitt does a great cover of this from her first album in 1971. It is a stripped down version not all the production you hear in Lenny’s version.
A video on gratitude. Gratitude for negative situations thrust upon us soo that we can learn. Gratitude for sharing one's pain with the world for they are your play actors too. Those are the two main keypoints from this video. ua-cam.com/video/q1tTci5lCAI/v-deo.htmlsi=3upXF8ThbgRXEfS1
Every word of this song was impeccably sung.
This is one of my all time favorite songs !!!!!! Thanks ~
Finally someone is reacting to Lenny Welch. This song is so sad and his voice is so good Loved it in the 60's Love it in 2024.

My mom and Dad's song....❤❤
