I love their 60s stuff way more than what they did later. The voice in this song is of a condemned man wanting to get a last message to his wife or girlfriend, before he is executed. "Well I did it to him now it's my turn to die..."
I agree with the Bee Gees early stuff. To.appreciate the full extent of them you have to go back to when they were just young boys wanting to make it in the music 🎶 industry.
Robin’s voice is unique and this song is a masterpiece. There’s nothing to do, the Bee Gees are the greatest ever. Nearly five decades of beautiful, gorgeous music and enormous success❤❤❤
I haven't heard this song in a minute. I was an abused child growing up, and no not by my parents but foster parents. I'm pretty sure this song was playing and my soul heard the words, " hold on." Of course God was speaking to me then as today.b our world is crazy, our country in tatters almost but the bee gees sing, " hold on." Powerful artists. They cared and loved their music and fans.
Released in 1968 and was a #1 hit on the UK charts. A turbulent time in history, Martin Luther and Bobby Keenedy were assasinated, a year later we walked on the moon, Viet Nam was blazing with the country ripe with war protests as many caskets were returning home. Richard Nixon was president and later resigned in disgrace. And then there was the music that somehow held the world together..... songs like this that I remeber so well when I was only an 11 year old. My older sister had a huge collection of 45s and I used to sneak in her room when she was not home to play them. I used to wear this 45 out! I loved the Bee Gees, especially their early stuff like this song, How Do You Mend A Broken Heart, To Love Somebody etc etc. Always enjoy your reaction Harri, TY.
I loved your reaction to this. I’m in my 20s but I listen to the Bee Gees so much, they are definitely underestimated. Also the number of songs they wrote for other people too. Peace Man.
I had twin sisters that were 7 years older than me. One of them was really into music, and had a stack of 45's. She showed me how to use the turntable, she saw how careful I was with the records. This was the song that made nine-year-old Stacy anti-death penalty for life. Pretty heavy stuff, to have a lasting effect like that on someone.
I agree Harri, the Bee Gees do not get the respect they deserve. This is a beautiful song, simply beautiful. Great request Craig. Harri such a great analysis and reaction.
Somehow the Bee Gees lost me when they did Night Fever, but late sixties and early seventies they made some beautiful compositions, still like to hear those. Spicks and specks, Massachusetts, To Love Somebody, Words....
I agree. Phenomenal. Love them. You describe it well. This is what we are missing in society right now. Not enough love songs. Not enough sweetness. That’s what we used to have. Now it’s all tainted. Heavy metal, so called Rock. Does not resemble what was when originated. Used to be all about love. That was a great thread going through society.
Totally agree with you about Robin's voice and about Bee Gees being up there with L&M. It seems to me they had at least 5 careers - lol. The early Australian years, the 60s fame, the R&B/Disco era of the 70s, the hits for other people era of the 80s, then their post fever work. "Size Isn't Everything" from 1993 is one of my favorite albums (tied with Main Course). Just so much really fantastic music. Thanks for a great reaction.
I've always loved this song, I never knew the real meaning/I recently found our that Its about a guy on death row" Now when I listen to it, it like a whole new song. I really enjoyed the video. The Twins were only 17, Barry a few years older..
Barry had different layers of voice... romantic soft sweet voice...fluky groovy ...of course super signature falsetto voice of Bee Gees ..🎉🎉❤ Maurice 's sexy deep voice was also amazing... Robin 's unique vibrato. .🎉❤
Yes, the excitement was almost too much for me, lol. It always happens to me when I hear The Bee Gees. Thank you for the great reaction and yes, they should definitely be up there with Lennon & McCartney. To me personally they’re in a level all their own. ❤
That's called a vibrato, could explain why he moves that way! Did you notice Robin playing the guitar when Barry was singing? Awesome stuff! FABULOUS reaction!
What a great song. Released in 1968, the story of a prisoner waiting for execution but is begging the Warden to get a last message to his wife. The bass guitar lines done by Maurice are so beautiful. Maurice said they always tried to play their bass lines like Paul McCartney, their idol. Harmonies made in heaven. Spectacular!!! Robin sings the lead in the 1st and 3rd verse, while Barry sings the 2nd verse. This was The Bee Gees 2nd UK Number. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Craig. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Robin took the lead in singing for this song was brought by him.. However Barry 's voice was so stunning in strength.....even though he was not discovered he has the awesome ability in the ability of the falsetto singing in the future Bee Gees music spectacular era.....🎉❤😊
Two British groups/singers that I love the most and. I feel we’re so underrated: the BeeGees and Cliff Richard! People had real talent and could actually sing! Both are just magical live, nothing better! Would love to see you react to The Bee Gees video ( Idea), from the same time period! The video like everything they have done was very innovative ( way ahead of the time) Also, the live video from the Event/Cliff Richard…( From a Distance), BTW the DVD and Cd of the entire Event is fantastic. ( it covers back from the Oh Boy days through the present…at the time)…the song/video I requested is the finale’. Just love your reactions and enthusiasm!🇺🇸
As a teen in the 60s,the early bee gees music was our anthems ,each song told a story ,still gives me shivers to listen to them so many more for you to listen to
I was a 70 s teenager so my first Gees songs were How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Run to Me, Saw A New Morning and Alive. Then came the 1975 songs Nights on Broadway, Jive Talkin’, and Fanny Be Tender, Songbird, and Baby as You Turn Away. Then came 1976 with You Should Be Dancing, Love So Right, Subway, Wasn’t that the Way It Was,You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down Feel free to react to any of those. They made music until together until Maurice died in 2003. After la”that Robin and Barry made their own songs.until Robin died of cancerBarry continued on his own.😢❤
I first heard this when I was 11 and my 14 year old cousin introduced me to the BeeGees, beginning my decades long admiration of their music. Even at that tender age, I understood the lyrics and the waterworks began. It’s so sad that Barry is the only one still with us.
Awe.....what an awesome reaction! Love the Bee Gees!!! Especially the earlier years! Like the Beatles they were always reinventing themselves! Thanks for sharing! Love from Texas!!!
I'm so glad you reacted to this song. This is my favorite of the Bee Gees. It gives me the chills every time I see and hear this. Robin's vibrato is special. I love the ah ah in the background. People were so slim in the 1960's!
I have just looked up this song because I used to sing it on my way to school in Hanwell, West London in the 60s. I can vividly recall walking through the Cuckoo Estate which was built to help sort out the overcrowding in the denser parts of London, and singing this song. The words just caught my imagination as did the voices. Happy, happy times when London was a joy to live in. I was blessed.
I feel the same as u about Robin’s voice! It’s unique and addictive. Remember buying it in Edinburgh in the 60’s because I hadn’t heard anything so haunting. Now live in Texas with my American husband, but am so very homesick for the UK.
This record dropped when I was a kid. A neighbor lent me the reel to reel tape and when I heard it, I froze. It was so amazingly beautiful. also on it was the BeeGees, mining disaster song. I also heard that day Aretha Franklin, Stan Getz, and Miles Davis. A good day to remember.
It's the electric guitar. And they actually did have two careers. They were very successful for a couple years, then faded away until Saturday Night Fever revived their career. Friends asked isn't it nice that a new band is so successful, and I told them no, this is a big comeback for them.
I am intrigued by the revolving stage they are on, and I can't take my eyes off of Barry. His voice is powerful and awesome too. The harmonies are sublime as always.
Love me some Bee Gees, but please give some respect for baby brother Andy. He was a Gibb too. That's all that needs to be said. Left us much too early. RIP Andy
I listened to their music when I was just a toddler. I've just discovered and realized that they are so amazing! Their harmony and Robin's voice and their journey, incomparable!
This is a great song. Like you Harri I love the music from the Bee Gees they are the best. They have written more than a thousand songs. Many number one hits for other artist as well. So much talent!! Thanks Harri

This is my favorite era by the Bee Gees in the 60's-70's. Some of their early hits were "Spicks & Specks", "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "Holiday", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "Words", "The Singer Sang His Song", "Melody Fair", "First of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.
I like the pre-disco sound, too. Robin's voice is more clear than Barry's voice. Barry can be a bit breathy for my taste, as if he didn't get a full breath. Both Robin & Barry has a tremulous quality, but Robin seems to put some power behind his. R.I.P. Robin Gibb.
A great song, when I first started genuinely listening to the bee gees, I had no clue they had begun with music like this (I was only familiar with their disco stuff). I was missing out! My favourite bee gees song for sure, this one!
As I commented on another Bee Gees reaction of yours. This is when they were great. Everything before SNF. Saw them in concert those early days, amazing.
It's always great to have Robin singin'. But same thing is to say about Barry. Sharing leads between them is just to call phenomenal, so it always brings in electrifying thrills no other bands could ever bring in like they did. Much more to say about this genius songpearl. The story of a man, goin' his last way on earth, an idea of Robin. Barry and Maurice said what? Oh, but it's a love song, Robin told them. And at the end they finished it together. On the way home, Robert Stigwood (their manager) called them back into the studio. Hearing that song, he was fascinated about it. But he missed three-part-harmony in the chorusses. You've got to bring it in, he said and so they did. And then, Vince Melouney, their leadguitar-man. Priceless work of him here, playin' solos inbetween nearly the whole song, very sensitive. Those days, I was a 15 year old boy and hearin' that song, I realised also the basslines of Maurice, which are so so perfect damned good. Overall, the whole construction of that track is pure magic.
I like the early pre-disco, Bee Gees
All my favorite Bee Gees songs Robin sings lead
The pre-disco stuff is their best.
I totally agree
It is.
Yes! I couldn’t agree more.
All I can say is, I agree. No one sounds like Robin. Thanks Craig. Thanks Harri.
Chewabacca
You’re welcome!
Robin’s son Spencer sounds a lot like him! Check him out in Empty Room!
I love their 60s stuff way more than what they did later. The voice in this song is of a condemned man wanting to get a last message to his wife or girlfriend, before he is executed. "Well I did it to him now it's my turn to die..."
I can’t believe Harri missed the meaning of the song! 😮
Thanks for explaining. I even pulled up the lyrics and didn't get it. 😋
I agree with the Bee Gees early stuff. To.appreciate the full extent of them you have to go back to when they were just young boys wanting to make it in the music 🎶 industry.
He killed his wife's boyfriend/. husband?
I agree with you absolutely. The disco stuff never interested me.
Robin’s voice was so full vulnerability and emotion. There will never be another like in popular music ever again.
Robin doesn't sound like anyone on this earth cause he's an angel... ❤❤❤
Sad song about a man in prison who’s ready to be put to death. He’s trying to leave a message to his wife.
The Bee Gees song catalogue is second to none, period!
Great request from Craig. Harri, I never get tired of your enthusiasm 🌺✌️
Robin’s voice is unique and this song is a masterpiece. There’s nothing to do, the Bee Gees are the greatest ever. Nearly five decades of beautiful, gorgeous music and enormous success❤❤❤

As Mo always said Robin had the voice that touches your heart.
You should check out "New York Mining Disaster 1941." Another amazing vocal performance by Robin.
. . . and really great harmonies!
He's done that one
I agree with everything you said Harri the Bee Gees are in a class of their own
Robin deserve slot on Rolling stone 200 greatest singers of all time with his brothers
@Mj 97 absolutely! What an insult to not include him.
An insult to not include Robin, Barry or Celine Dion.
One of my favorite Bee Gees songs. I know they were more popular later but I prefer their music pre-1972.
I love it ALL. Even the disco faze.
agree
I love their pre disco period
Robin does sound like a fragile angel!!!
It's his quivering quavering vibrato.
Fantastic choice Craig. Who could ever get enough of the Bee Gees.
Thanks!

Thnx for your enthusiastic reaction. You should take a look at the video showing excerpts of their 100 top 10 hits. Unbelievable
They are a tale of two bands. The sixties Bee Gees, and the reinvented 70's Bee Gees.

One of the best Songs they have ever Made. The precher man is Jesus.
