Chris, I just did 6 months in all these countries and plan another 6 months, once is not enough. Don't make hasty decisions based on first encounters. There was bad and good in each location, discover what combination checks more boxes.
Chris you looked happier and younger with the trimmed beard.
Another good video Chris. Bryan seems like another cool guy from Florida, my old stopping grounds. Southeast Asia is one of the best places on earth to live - my personal picks would be the Philippines or Thailand, Philippines firstly because my relatives live there and English is so wide-spread spoken and learned from day 1 in school for kids. Culture and people are the friendliest anywhere. Here’s to 2025 - success and happiness!
@@RetiredWorkingForYou I have a place in Jomteim. I’ve been to most if not all places he mentioned. Thailand wins overall hands down. But as always to each their own. Like ur videos. Helpful and fun. Cheers from America soon to be heading back to Thailand and my million dollar view from my my condo 100 meters from ocean. Sweet
Look forward to meeting Chris and Bryan someday
I'm an American 7 years in Thailand today. This guy is spot on.

The end of burning season.
no need to scare burning season end bro just the some part North of Thailand not all country
Friend has moved all over Asia, started Phillipines, the Cambodia, Vietnam, spend roughly 10 years in those countries all up, now in Thailand, said its all life should be, and should have listened to me, 10 years ago
Great interview! The gentleman was well spoken and articulate. I hope he has the best life in Thailand.
Yes he is. And it is also nice of you for pointing it out.

I get goosebumbs and tears in my eyes by lisyening to this at 40 years of age ❤ been 5 times 1 month to Thailand in 2024 to see if i could fit. This year will be the year for me to move and leave the life in Europe behind me. Love to see other people do similar things ❤
I’m retiring at 55 on February 14th 2025. Will slow travel thru Europe and Asia,. Working on getting rid of all I own in USA now.

I retired to Thailand in 2012 after 32 years of military and government service. We started off in Bangkok but sold our house in 2020 to build a custom home in the countryside, North of Chiang Rai. My daughter (now 39) is saving to retire in Thailand as well. The cost of living continues to climb and the cost for a home mortgage is unbelievable. She would have to work until age 62 just to make ends meet. We own a large plot of land and can build her a home and not worry about a mortgage. Her goal is to save as much as she can to afford retirement starting at age 50.
Thanks for your service ❤
Us housing is insane
Foreigners can't buy land in Thailand
You should clarify that foreigners cannot own land in thailand. You must have a thai wife to be able to do that.
My original retirement plan was to retire at 67, work part-time, and save money. However, high prices for everything have severely affected my plan. I'm concerned if people who went through the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am having now. The stock market is worrying me as my income has decreased, and I fear I won't have enough savings for retirement since I can't contribute as much as before.
I’m 66 and still working full time. I do enjoy my work, it provides me with purpose and has secured my financial future. Most people are too eager to retire as early as possible. Even if you do retire early, best to get a part time job for the reasons cited above, as well as following many if not all of the suggestions in this video.
A lot of folks downplay the role of advlsors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $$275k to $850K...
Could you kindly elaborate on the advisor's background and qualifications?
I have worked with a few financial advisors before now but i ultimately settled for 'Annette Marie Holt'. She is SEC regulated and licensed in US. You can easily look her up
Thanks a lot for this recommendation. I just looked her up, and I have sent her an email. I hope she gets back to me soon.
Great video, retired 54 year old sitting here living in California never traveled outside the States. Watching this makes me want to pack two suitcases and venture outside my comfort zone.
Please please please I was like you retired at age 52 never traveled outside the states since then over 30 countries then discovered Thailand...Wow...so please step outside your comfort zone..you won't regret it.
Absolutely Grate-ing!
My advise would be just to take one suitcase (or bagback) instead of two, when you start traveling .. the fewer things the better to start discovering a new life.
After twenty plus years (vacation) travelling all over SEA i ended up getting my dream poolvilla last year in a quiet area north of pattaya near a quiet beach and big enough to accommedate visiting friends&family as a condo would be too small for me...but for exploring and finding you place start with a condo. Good luck all and enjoy your life
I'm about the same age and would highly recommend traveling outside the USA. I've been to many countries in South America, Europe, and SEA. Yes, Thailand is a great place to visit.
But in all honesty, home for me is California, retirement will be in California. I love the climate, cultures, and things to do here. And as an avid golfer, it's hard to beat the year round golf weather and relatively cheap green fees.
If I could retire right now, I would very quickly go and live a year or two on the road, to see how I like that lifestyle. Try adventure now, that you have health, time and a budget!
Great video. Very articulate and cool guy.
Im a retired expat from the US living in Thailand seven years.
Was married to a Filapina in the US for many years. She passed away in 2017. I came here in 2018.
She never wanted to visit the Philippines, but loved Thailand. We went many times.
Have a wonderful Thai partner. We live in south Thailand. Travel every month.
Go to Vietnam often. Love it there. Problem there is no Retirement visa.
Love Thailand. Havent missed the US for a moment. Good luck with whstever you choose
I have been slow traveling SE Asia now for well over 2 years and can say that all these places have pros and cons, so it's best to do like this guy did and travel around the region to see what suits you best.
2 years of travel and your profound summary is all places have pros and cons!?! Did you just need some attention.
@@ilionatroya7129 That`s honestly the same summary I have after years or travel and living abroad.
Hey Chris! Great to see you back. Bryan is a great spokesman. I could listen to him all day.
Yeah, he's a good dude!
Me too. With the audio turned off.
Saving for retirement has become increasingly difficult due to low-paying jobs, rising inflation, and high rents, making it harder for workers to build a financial cushion. Even middle-class individuals are struggling to afford homes, leaving them without a secure place to retire.
The soaring cost of living has disrupted my retirement plans. I had initially planned to retire at 62, work part-time, and continue saving, but now I’m uncertain if that goal is realistic. It makes me question whether navigating the 2008 financial crisis was easier than dealing with today’s challenges. The combination of stock market fluctuations and reduced income is causing me significant anxiety about securing enough for retirement.
Financial experts generally recommend saving at least 20% of your income in a 401(k). Peter Dewitt Martin taught me how to determine the ideal savings amount based on my age and earnings. His decades of market experience have brought tremendous value to my portfolio, helping me achieve impressive growth.
That’s very encouraging! How can I reach this advisor? My portfolio hasn’t been performing well, and I need professional guidance.
Peter Dewitt Martin, who works at Empower Financial Services, is the advisor I recommend. He’s highly respected in the financial field, and you can easily find more information about him online.
Thank you for the recommendation! I looked him up and reviewed his website-his investment background is impressive. I’ve already sent him an email and am looking forward to his response!
Your closing statement was spot on. 99% of older people ( over 55 ) don’t think they will die soon or get incredibly ill or slow down to a snail but it happens to 80 plus % of all people they die before they thought they would , in short you can’t take any money to the big house
I wonder how many older expats expire in country? Do they intend to get cremated and disposed of locally or shipped back home?
The big house 😢 well said.
Funny, but I did the same thing 16 years ago... I was an expat living in Costa Rica and wanted a change... I spent time in the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore looking for the best option for me... Thailand came out at the top of my list and I've been here in 15 years... I have no plans to move anywhere else...
@@Muadib223 where do you live? What part of Thailand. Thx

Sawasadee hombres! Great viewpoints here! Im Thai born but live in the states. Retired 4 years ago and have been traveling back and forth between the states and Bk biannually ever since. I met up with your boy Kirk, and he really impressed me with the condo offerings off the sukhumvit BTS lines. Found out the rental rates are so affordable that it would be so liveable just doing 3mos-12mos rental in so many areas of Thailand. Its living the perpetual permanent vacation life! What i pay in property taxes alone, in Chicago, covers my entire rental and living expenses in Thailand.
If I ever retire, I’m definitely considering Vietnam. The countryside is just stunning
Do you have any historical ties to Vietnam?
You need to re-new your visa every 90 days. So you have to leave the country and re-enter.
Great energy interview. I retired end of 23, spent all of 24 adjusting and just staying home in Canada. I have to say I'm already bored. Maybe I have 15 - 20 years left. Working up the nerve to just go for it, maybe 2025 is the year.
You don't have to choose "one place to retire". Just start at the best place you like now. And travel. Why can't you have more than one "final chapter"? I retired to Viet Nam for 8 years and 2 years in Thailand. Now in Calif for 3 years. We'll be going back to Thailand mostly plus Saigon and Cambodia and who knows.
So true, but most guys are burdened with a bunch of stuff to carry around. Study Minimalism and learn to detach from so many clothes and things, this is the best answer . Buys you more Freedom . Easy to bounce.
Might be for the need of making more audience watch this video, myself included 😅
So you have 2 suitcases, or lot of money to move all your belongings oversees when you want back and forth.
Wow whadda concept! Who knew?
@@Veganexpat Detaching from possessions is a necessary step before moving overseas. Everyone watching these videos should already know that. Hoarding old stuff may be a comfort, and a self-identity, but the video is about those who want to start a new life. Be young again. Yes freedom.
Been here since 1988. Haven’t found a reason to go back to Europe yet!
Take a deep breath…
That’s almost 40 years😮 quit a long time
Where is here?
Been to all these places and for a 55 year old single guy who likes to golf and the beach I would recommend Pattaya/Jomtien Thailand, Da Nang Vietnam, Phuket Thailand and Hua Hin Thailand in that order. Pattaya is number one because it is close to Bangkok, has good golf, great nightlife and the city is big enough to offer lots of restaurants, luxury condos, shopping, health care, etc.
Pattaya is a shithole.
Spot on , you got the life being there at 55
You forgot the girls of Pattaya! 😂
@@this.is.berlin I did not forget..."nightlife" is code for girls
@@this.is.berlinhe actually indirectly mentioned it😂
All roads lead back to Thailand. Best place ever, hands down. 🙏💜
Great video. I have been living in Thailand for 8½ years now.
Never regret it. You forgot one important thing, healthcare, the healthcare here in Thailand is top notch, one of the best in the world.
Very important especially if you're 60+
How does healthcare work over there - do ppl pay for local insurance or pay costs as they go? Is it easy to find a family doctor there? TIA
Yes, that is the one thing that I wish was better in the Phils. Thailand is definitely better for healthcare. However I am not going to spend my entire life living somewhere just because the hospitals are better!
Forget about health insurance after 70!
@artair1 you are misinformed, a friend of mine 71 y.o. signed a new insurance policy a couple of month ago. He is soon 72!! Thai Life Insurance company.
I did it Chris, I moved to Chang Mai with my Thai Partner & Daughter. I've been here eight weeks, secured a 12 month house rental, its 10km outside the city. I spend my days pedaling around the paddy fields and enjoying the sunshine with my family. I'm currently back in the UK (snow & ice) to tie off the loose ends, then straight back to paradise.
I'm going to throw this out there as my own Vietnam observation. (Maybe more of an opinion.) At 17:43 point Bryan mentioned maybe because of the Buddhist community Thailand might be more accepting thanh Vietnam. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Vietnam as well. I believe that because the Vietnam war was still in our lifetime, they don't know where us older North American looking men are from, I see it in the faces of the older vietnamese then the younger so that is how I draw on that conclusion. Me & my Thai wife LOVE Vietnam and find the country absolutely Stunning and have made good friends there as well. Great video as always Chris.
Definitely warmer to Americans in Saigon
Great video Chris! You and Bryan chatting away was fantastic.....I visited Koh Samui in 90 and it took me 35 years before i went back in December last year. Boy it has changed but still beautiful and theThai people are as welcoming as ever. Now planning to be based in Thailand for 6 months a year and 6 months in UK. Will be using Koh Samui as a base to visit the rest of SE Asia....it already feels like home!

As long as you respect people, the culture, and the country, you will do well in Thailand. Welcome to Thailand. Hope you enjoy living in Thailand!
The nice thing about living in Asia (or retiring for that matter), is it is easier to travel between Asia for so cheap. You can pick one country and travel around Asia when you get bored and needs a break from the everyday routine. Good luck!

Vietnam is definitely underrated as a retirement spot. The cost of living is low, the food is incredible, and the culture is so rich! 🇻🇳 Anyone else already planning a visit after watching this?
Vietnam for travel and work is ok but we don't have any kind of retirement visa, you have to bypass the law by moving in and moving out every 3 months or faking jobs, marriage here, which would be stricter in the future
Lived in hcmc for 8 years after leaving Thailand during the 2014 coup. Married with three kids, we are back and forth between the two, us for the kids education, singers in Saigon

Ive been living in Thailand for the past 5 years, I have been to many places in the world and have really am enjoying my time here. The next challenge will be to learn the language better. I think it is necessary to learn the language to really feel part of the community.
Do yourself a big favor learn to phonetically read the script. You will learn the language, much faster and understand it much better..
@@ikakau Who wants to feel part of the community in Thailand? I've got news for you, I've been to Thailand many times and to the vast majority of Thais you will always be a foreigner or a Farang, no matter how many years you have lived there or even if you are married to a Thai.
@Resmith18SR everyone’s experience is different and living in Thailand is very different than visiting. I can say that the only people who have treated me like a foreigner were other foreigners. Not being a white foreigner may play into that, I have felt much more of an outsider in parts of the country in which i am a citizen of.

Jomtien, beach front condos, plenty of expats, food from all over the world, 15 minutes south of Pattaya, 1hr from Bangkok and has plenty of that cultural Thai community feel too.

In fact I had cervical spine surgery in Bangkok at Bumrungrad International Hospital and I am nearing retirement and I would like to retire in Asia, with Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines are on my list. I will be in touch to setup a tour or two or three. Thank you very much for this video. Be blessed 🙏🏾 and enjoy your life
What a compelling interview, I’m on the edge and are making moves to relocate, in part at first but later looking to make it permanent. Travelled a lot in SE Asia and lived there for several years, it’s great but it’s not for everyone. And as I get older, I’m starting to think how much longer until I pull the pin. I’m definitely closer than before watching this video. Thank you.
Perspectives depend upon attitudes and expectations.
Thailand will always hold a special place in my heart. That said it's not for everyone and it takes a year or so to get to know a place.
It does take *at least* a year to really get to know the culture of any place, it doesn't matter where in the world it is. Anything less than 6 months somewhere, and you are just dipping your toe into what it's truly like to live there.
If you have to actually work where you are living, it can take even longer because so much of your time and attention is spent on work and not really getting to learn/know the culture. This is even true in the US, moving city to city, or state to state.
It is *extremely* costly to move more than 1K miles, and if you have to get rid of everything you own (and have worked for), and you end up having to move back because you don't like it, or it's not what you thought it was going to be, or because someone in your family gets sick (or you become injured/ill and can't care for yourself), it is *extremely* expensive to move back and start all over again. That doesn't even take into account when some natural disaster hits and turns the world upside down. Every year this happens some place in the world.
People really have to think about the possible consequences, and you have to keep cash on hand in case you have to leave (like when they forced people OUT of many countries during the pandemic).
I'm not saying people can't or shouldn't do it, I'm simply saying you have to think about many "what ifs" and what you're going to do if they occur.
I think this is great for people who don't have pets, family, children, or grandchildren.
@@le_th_omg. This comment definitely deserves more attention.

Been here for a week and I am jaw dropped at the modern infrastructure and overall quality
What a great interview with an individual that is so inspiring, knowledgeable, and wise. Thank you for sharing this!
As a vet, Bryan has a sweet pension (that pays immediately) and free healthcare, unlike the vast majority of Americans. That's not to say others can't do it too, but it means they have to save more. And that's what I did, so I'm retiring in a couple of months at age 56.
nice, I wish Canadian military was like the USA's
All depends on how long you have served and then its a percentage It's not enough to live on and if you sustained injury and the type of injury all comes in to the equation
@@Largeportion1000 He said he is "100% disabled.". I'm estimating it's $4-5K/month. That should be mentioned more when they are pitching this lifestyle.
@@Largeportion1000 lot of abuse with military disability payments. I know a guy at work who gets a check because “the navy gave me sleep apnea”. Has nothing to do with him being 100lbs overweight. Thailand is a cut above the rest no doubt about it. If you break down into categories it should win overall over Vietnam and the Phillippines.
Yep, it's clear from the numbers into each country.

Well done Bryan. Wish you much happiness buddy.
Great interview, top guy and fantastic insights!
Hoping to move there in March. But I love this guy's perspective and respectful attitude. I hope to find a nice community and super excited about delicious cheap food and fishing
I've lived abroad in Asia for past 22 years. Each to there own. I spent time in the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, HK etc. But i prefer the Philippines hands down. English languange helps also. Cheers. Just live ya dream where ever.
Of all the commentators / educators sharing their opinions and facts, based upon their experiences and observations,
about Thailand and south east asia, considerations of where to live, what each area has to offer, questions to ask oneself, etc. You are easily the most interesting to me due to how and what you present, your manner of articulation. Thank you!!! and Now for some questions,
Wow. You are me. I am 54(Canadian though lol) and really thought Central or South America- Colombia- would be my "retirement" spot. But I leave for SEA in just a few days and really am not planning on returning to Canada. I have never been there. I am going to scout places out and see where I might fit in the best. Great vibe you have going on, Bryan. Love it. Well done.
Why did you rule out South America? Did you visit at all?
Thanks man! That's awesome, I hope you find your perfect spot!
This was beautiful ❤❤❤
I am watching this in my condo in Bangkok on Sukhumvit (rent $720/mo). Phra Khanong near the BTS is a great location. I’m now a city guy. Definitely not a beach guy though I’m fine with the occasional visit. This is my 8th year living in Thailand. There is so much to do in BKK and I love the expat community.
Love BKK and hope to start my retirement there but prefer to end my days on a beach ...too each their own and glad you picked your perfect place in Thailand!
Hi Marty, my friend is looking for a condo she can work from starting this Monday. Would you be able to share condo/hotel details you recommend in that area? Thanks a lot!
Doing my 3rd trip to Thailand in March. Been to Bangkok, Koh Samui & Phuket. Going to Pattaya & Hua Hin this time. I’m feeling it now. I can totally relate to “just do it”. Each trip is a step in the assessment process for that retirement decision. Gotta get to the Philippines but I know you can travel to all these places once you’re in SE Asia.
What a lovely man!! if only all foreigners who come to Thailand were as lovley! I'm only half way through the vid so I dont know where he'll end up living. But I'd love him to end up in Hua Hin..... Great that he's enjoying life while he can..... Please come to Hua Hin.....it has untold hidden gifts that youre not aware of until youve lived here for a while. It slowly unfolds like a lotus flower. Thanks for the vid!! Very cool!
Thank you for your kind comments! I love Hua Hin 🙏
Oh please!
Is this rizz?
This video is super relevant. I just spent a month traveling between Vietnam and Thailand. We started in Saigon, flew to Danang, then Halong Bay and Hoian...from there Chiang Mai Thailand and Bangkok. Loved every moment and have narrowed down the possibilities to two places. DaNang Beach or Hua Hin. My sister really loves Vietnam but I'm more in the southern Thailand vibe. Luckily flights are cheap and we don't need to be in the same city!
King Mr. Chris is back with regular videos !!
Life is to enjoy, congrats for your channel and content man. Have a good year!
Cheers from Argentina
Nice job Chris, love the shipwreck look!!
Just needs the Willson ball now..
Very informative and helpful Hearing the perspective on the separate countries and so many cities in one concise video From someone who's been to them all.
Well said, I can relate to this fellow, started in 2019 and traveled to a lot of the same places and countries he has. No place is perfect in SE Asia and it's not for everyone for many reasons. Not easy, took awhile to sell everything and cut the ties, no kids, limited family, good health presently. I have lived in Thailand for over a year now, have a great girlfriend life is good.
Awesome interview. Thanks so much.
