I've only ever worked for this one however and it's very small/'mom-and-pop' style so I'm curious what a bigger more corporate company is like. Are you required to do site visits/travel or research code/due diligence, or is it pretty much strictly drafting? Also, do you by chance know what your company offers as starting pay for an experienced drafter? Just trying to get an idea of what to expect at other places. Thanks in advance.
Well I've been in both, I've been in really big world wide companies and smaller 1 office companies and it all depends on how they are with their employees, the company i am with now is medium sized company with 5 office in the country but small enough to still have the family feel and respect for their people, bigger companies are good too as far as programs etc but like I said before it all depends on the company employees relationship, there's always a chance in both big and small that you csn do site visits, and the same goes for starting pay, the more good experience that you have the more your starting pay is
I am a software designer. Pretty much all of my work is done to a specification that I receive as an input. Like a word document with requirements that sort of thing? In other words, I don’t just write code, I have to write it to support a design spec. What is this like for a CAD engineer? Do you receive some sort of input that you designed to? Like requirements written out in language or maybe a model?
I’m looking into getting into drafting. I took some classes in high school and was OK at it. However, I have no imagination. Like I cannot make images in pictures in my mind. Would that make it difficult to be a draftsman?

Hi, I currently work at a small engineering firm setting up backgrounds in autocad. I mostly just set up drawings sent from architects by putting the objects onto the layers that our firm uses. I’m also able to draw buildings in CAD from dimensions on physical PDFS. I was wondering what your current job description entails, what different jobs you have done, how it varies, and what schooling you have done to get to where you are?
I do Transportion work, structural detailing for bridges etc... i've been doing this now for 21 years, I went to a technical school CAD Engineering and got my Technical degree, I've done so many huge jobs that its too much to put lol and small jobs but its a great field to work in and the sky is the limits

Learn as much as you can about cad and drafting in a whole, and softwares especially AutoCAD, Microstation CONNECT Edition, and Revit and always be willing to think outside the box and to troubleshoot problems
I graduated college with a BS in game design (artist end of it) and still had no idea what I really wanted besides "making things" the past year I figured out that a CAD Tech is where I want to go. I've made some shop drawings for the shop that my dad works for using paint, Photoshop, and illustrator. For the past 6 months I've been learning to use Freecad and I'd say that I'm fairly competent in Sketch and Part Design. The best I can think of right now is keep practicing and building skill. Edit: Autocad is too expensive, but I have used Autodesk Maya and 3DS Max.
Do you have any tips or advice for an upcoming drafter? This is my final year of college, where I plan on getting my associate degree in science and certificate in CAD drafting. I learned various softwares-AutoCad, Revit, Solid Works, Catia and so on-so I’m familiar with the programs.
Congrats your getting into a great field, if I had to give any advice so to always be open and think outside to box to get things done, and take plenty of notes, get yourself a binder and print out and write notes on everything you can and do learn regardless of the software you use, because one day you might have to use or do something in cad that you haven't done in 6 months to a year but comes up again and if you takes notes you'll never forget it...always knowledge is power, take time to grow your craft and be proud of designs or projects you work on and always try to bring problem solving techniques to the table...cad is an art form and very respected
Decide what kind of drafting you want to specialize in. There are a ton of options but each requires familiarity with background of that type of work. Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Architectural, Aeronautical, etc all requires knowledge of that specific field to give you a leg up. Find out which has the better opportunities where you live and try to take a class that gives you some background in that. There are a ton of great-paying options in civil, working for state and local governments.

I’ve recently started working for the family business which is a restaurant/casino/hotel design company. Things got really busy lately and they have me working minimum wage doing cad I’m not complaining I love it learning so much feel so lucky. Mostly I’m doing redlines and setting up sheets also doing some elevations and sections. My uncle said “the best piece of advice I can give you is work quick but never rush”

It all depends which type of cad field you go into, civil engineering, structural, mechanical, electrical, architecture etc... but for my 19 years of doing this I got to say I love it, pay is pretty good but the more certifications and experience you get the more you will grow in pay and level, the stress is like any other job, when there's a deadline for a project you gotta do what it takes to get the job done, but its a rewarding job, it also depends on the company you work for too, not all are created equal
so long as you get a skill that you can take with you from job to job.. its vital... CAD's good though .... so is software / webdev. harder to get into software though in my opinion... more effort to reach job ready capability.. whereas with CAD you can be a junior and know the basics ... with software often they expect a lot. That's another thing to consider when you do something .... are there a selection of jobs in it from the very bottom to the top. I studied physics at uni for example ... hence I'm a physics grad... that's my background.. there's no such thing as an easily accessible job as a junior physicist. Its Phd or nothing... and the skills aren't applicable to industry right off the bat. So what you want is something that has max use in industry is very practical and they pay good money for.... plus, its has ease of entry into the field via enough junior positions.... I'd say CAD is right up there amongst the best.
I'm 25 years old, so I went from being a welder to now being a Detailer/ Drafter, while never touching and looking at Architectural and Structural prints ever. I have no degrees but I have community college certificates for specifically welding and AutoCAD. My question to the long time CAD guys, what is your method of attack to a fresh project and what steps do you take to keep consistency and in general to develop a good draft for others to use. I'm struggling with consistency and honesty in everything. I've been at this for 3 months and I need a mentor. I'm the sole CAD guy at work
@@patriotskingnation8084 I was at the right place at the right time. My boss realized my potential after I got his big rotory plasma cutter up and running so he pitched the idea. Honestly I would download the free version of Fusion 360. Learn how to use it, make some cool stuff. Take a community college course for like $350 for AutoCAD and ask EVERYONE for a job. Eventually you will find one. Most places will just hire if you ask to get experience. I owe it all to my generous boss and he's why I have my current setup. CAD is a great Segway away from welding.

Its used for many things, where I work its used for Transportation engineering to design roads and bridges, but its also good for electrical work, it also does 2D and 3D, and animation and alot more

I've been doing this for 19 years now, so I already knew what to do, but when starting with the new company there's always a slight slight learning curve to learn depending how that company does their work
@@josh2676 oh ok lol...sorry about that, no they won't throw you into the fire like that, they will usually pair you with an experienced Desinger and learn how things are done and how to do them, then you will get light work and work your way up, but they don't toss you in without taking baby steps

I have an diploma in drafting and design technology (grad of 2013) since then I've been Having a hard time getting my foot in the door. currently I'm going to school to earn my associates degree in drafting which is quite difficult since I work a full time job. I'm familiar with autodesk revit and piping 3D program. what advice can you give someone who's try to get their foot in the door or pursue an entry level job as a drafter.
That's a great start to know AutoCAD and Revit, if you can try to learn Microstation V8i or Microstation CONNECT Edition and if you dont have one already make a profile on Linkedin.com (Free) there are a lot of companies looking to hire CAD Techs and CAD designers
Also, you may want to build a portfolio (either as a website, or could just be a word document) with some designs you have worked with, either in school or at home. That will definitely give you an edge over other applicants

Search a technical school around your area that offers them. A lot of the classes now a days are online, you would just need a good pc computer. I highly highly recommend taking the classes because there are foundational fundamentals that you build up from!! I took an Auto CAD class, loved it!

You should look for courses in CAD and try to have the certificates of Autodesk, but you should have a piece of knowledge or experience in the engineering field

I went to ITT Tech (when they were still around) and got my 2 yr. degree in computer drafting and design. From there I was able to get entry level position as a CAD Engineer desiging custom aluminum extrustions. They softwares they taught at that school was Autodesk's products like AutoCAD (2D & 3D) and Inventer (3D). There are other softwares like Solidworks and Pro E (Engineer) that are other popular sofwares which I have never had a chance to use. I have mostly used AutoCAD for the past 10+ yrs. It depends on what software the company uses but Solidworks, Pro E, and AutoCAD are the most well known but I think AutoCAD is the most popular used. You can check with you local community college or trades schools and see what classes they have available in CAD. A starting position might get you 30k a yr. which is low, average is 50k, and high would be around 80k.
Pretty much a 2 year degree is all you need to start your way in the field, AutoCAD, Revit, Microstation V8i or Microstation CONNECT Edition are great software to learn and photoshop is plus if you know that (not always needed but good to know) and the more experience you get after your foot is in the door the better and always be willing to learn anything you can about what type of cad work you will be doing civil, structural, mechanical, piping whatever it my be

Hi, yes you need at minimum a 2 year technical degree or certificate from a CAD course in order to get an entry level position in this field, technical schools, community colleges have CAD courses

It all depends who's hiring and looking sometimes its hiring madness because companies are looking and in big need and other times which is little here and there they need but not crazy but I can say the market is hot for cad designers now...LinkedIn.... is a great way to find companies that are hiring

I really miss the pencil era, been in cad for more than a 2 decades specifically on furniture drafting and design export industries the only problem now is the opportunity many of the industries in 3rd world are struggling due to pandemic :( now I'm thinking about shifting position.

It all depends on the company and the opportunity, through out my years of experience i have been out a bunch of times in the field to look at the project, get ideas etc.

Basically I'm a mechanical diploma graduate,.. Unexpectedly my mind turn in to design field.. I'm 25 now.. Started attending solidworks class and i feel i can run it for long.. Can you plz gimme some advice...
Try to learn AutoCAD and Microstation V8i or Microstation CONNECT Edition those are 2 of the biggest software out of many that a lot of companies use

currently in classes for CAD my uncle is an architect and said i should give it a shot, how is the pay and the work as far as stress?
It all depends which type of cad field you go into, civil engineering, structural, mechanical, electrical, architecture etc... but for my 19 years of doing this I got to say I love it, pay is pretty good but the more certifications and experience you get the more you will grow in pay and level, the stress is like any other job, when there's a deadline for a project you gotta do what it takes to get the job done, but its a rewarding job, it also depends on the company you work for too, not all are created equal
so long as you get a skill that you can take with you from job to job.. its vital... CAD's good though .... so is software / webdev. harder to get into software though in my opinion... more effort to reach job ready capability.. whereas with CAD you can be a junior and know the basics ... with software often they expect a lot. That's another thing to consider when you do something .... are there a selection of jobs in it from the very bottom to the top.
I studied physics at uni for example ... hence I'm a physics grad... that's my background.. there's no such thing as an easily accessible job as a junior physicist. Its Phd or nothing... and the skills aren't applicable to industry right off the bat. So what you want is something that has max use in industry is very practical and they pay good money for.... plus, its has ease of entry into the field via enough junior positions.... I'd say CAD is right up there amongst the best.
I'm 25 years old, so I went from being a welder to now being a Detailer/ Drafter, while never touching and looking at Architectural and Structural prints ever. I have no degrees but I have community college certificates for specifically welding and AutoCAD. My question to the long time CAD guys, what is your method of attack to a fresh project and what steps do you take to keep consistency and in general to develop a good draft for others to use. I'm struggling with consistency and honesty in everything. I've been at this for 3 months and I need a mentor. I'm the sole CAD guy at work

@@patriotskingnation8084 I was at the right place at the right time. My boss realized my potential after I got his big rotory plasma cutter up and running so he pitched the idea. Honestly I would download the free version of Fusion 360. Learn how to use it, make some cool stuff. Take a community college course for like $350 for AutoCAD and ask EVERYONE for a job. Eventually you will find one. Most places will just hire if you ask to get experience. I owe it all to my generous boss and he's why I have my current setup. CAD is a great Segway away from welding.

27 no ged yet but going to get it I've been using blender as a beginner tool for 3d projects just starting the donut tutorial and looking for a professional career for either 3d modeling or game designer I've always been interested in this topic hopefully I can get into a university and explore the vast world of designer development as a long term benefit career choice.

I can't give much detail on this project but we are using Microstation connect edition

Its used for many things, where I work its used for Transportation engineering to design roads and bridges, but its also good for electrical work, it also does 2D and 3D, and animation and alot more

Which harder coding or drafting
when you first got hired, did they put you in a training period? or did they just throw projects at you and expect you to know everything?
I've been doing this for 19 years now, so I already knew what to do, but when starting with the new company there's always a slight slight learning curve to learn depending how that company does their work

@@josh2676 oh ok lol...sorry about that, no they won't throw you into the fire like that, they will usually pair you with an experienced Desinger and learn how things are done and how to do them, then you will get light work and work your way up, but they don't toss you in without taking baby steps
@prince chikuts yes of course, you have to know how to do technical drafting and design already but the company will train you on their standards
hi I'm a future CAD drafter (from Louisiana) with knowledge in architectural/piping discipline. I have an diploma in drafting and design technology (grad of 2013) since then I've been Having a hard time getting my foot in the door. currently I'm going to school to earn my associates degree in drafting which is quite difficult since I work a full time job.
I'm familiar with autodesk revit and piping 3D program. what advice can you give someone who's try to get their foot in the door or pursue an entry level job as a drafter.
That's a great start to know AutoCAD and Revit, if you can try to learn Microstation V8i or Microstation CONNECT Edition and if you dont have one already make a profile on Linkedin.com (Free) there are a lot of companies looking to hire CAD Techs and CAD designers
Also, you may want to build a portfolio (either as a website, or could just be a word document) with some designs you have worked with, either in school or at home. That will definitely give you an edge over other applicants

Search a technical school around your area that offers them. A lot of the classes now a days are online, you would just need a good pc computer. I highly highly recommend taking the classes because there are foundational fundamentals that you build up from!! I took an Auto CAD class, loved it!

Yes definitely they can work, plumbing, electrical, civil and structural transportation like roads and bridges...mechanical drafting...there are alot of different areas

You should look for courses in CAD and try to have the certificates of Autodesk, but you should have a piece of knowledge or experience in the engineering field

I went to ITT Tech (when they were still around) and got my 2 yr. degree in computer drafting and design. From there I was able to get entry level position as a CAD Engineer desiging custom aluminum extrustions. They softwares they taught at that school was Autodesk's products like AutoCAD (2D & 3D) and Inventer (3D). There are other softwares like Solidworks and Pro E (Engineer) that are other popular sofwares which I have never had a chance to use. I have mostly used AutoCAD for the past 10+ yrs. It depends on what software the company uses but Solidworks, Pro E, and AutoCAD are the most well known but I think AutoCAD is the most popular used. You can check with you local community college or trades schools and see what classes they have available in CAD. A starting position might get you 30k a yr. which is low, average is 50k, and high would be around 80k.
Pretty much a 2 year degree is all you need to start your way in the field, AutoCAD, Revit, Microstation V8i or Microstation CONNECT Edition are great software to learn and photoshop is plus if you know that (not always needed but good to know) and the more experience you get after your foot is in the door the better and always be willing to learn anything you can about what type of cad work you will be doing civil, structural, mechanical, piping whatever it my be

Hi, yes you need at minimum a 2 year technical degree or certificate from a CAD course in order to get an entry level position in this field, technical schools, community colleges have CAD courses

I really miss the pencil era, been in cad for more than a 2 decades specifically on furniture drafting and design export industries the only problem now is the opportunity many of the industries in 3rd world are struggling due to pandemic :( now I'm thinking about shifting position.
I know same alittle more then 2 decades , it all depends on what type of cad work you do, I do transportation civil and structural which is always in need ot new and rehabilitation work and new work, some fields are slower then others especially during the pandemic

So I have apprenticed with a Freelance CAD designer, which was great(you get challenged and have to often go on site to figure out a design and get dimensions)

100% yea, 2 years its pretty much what is needed, you can always go more after but 2 years and entre level but the more years you get to have in the field is what makes you a great cad designer
