As a kid, I only played my electric and always used a pick. I came across Andy McKee in 5th grade and began playing acoustic and eventually began to play fingerstyle. Andy McKee single handedly influenced me as a musician and now all I do is play finger-style acoustic
I recently got back into the electric, bought a strat and have been learning some Clapton & Mayer. Came back to learn the intro for this sweet tune though!
Same dude... I never looked back once I discovered this man among many others.. I played solo shows a lot as a finger style acoustic player and used a lot of their tunes as covers :) To mention some... Don Ross, Michael Hedges, Antoine Dufour.... list goes on lol
Guys this song works miracles for babies!! For every baby, niece/nephew in my family, if they're fussy we put this on and I kid you not, within the first 3 notes he plays they stop. Amazing
What hardship the real McKee went to. He overcomes it and let his heart sing through guitar. Without Andy mc kee I would not be here now. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels the same. He's Music gives the world hope. Thank you very very much brother. I prefer his music than Tommy Emmanuel .
Andy McKee NEVER disappoints. So much emotion....something that alot of modern music lacks. He is telling a story without any words. And oh, the joy to have a greenfield guitar...
Andy Mckee has gotta be the best songwriter for solo acoustic guitar. His melodies are so unique and interesting and work so well on one instrument even though it sounds like about 3 or 4 guitars being played!
Jose Villegas Yeh he plays great, and Preston Reed as well, but Andy McKee just took their work to another level imo! Especially in terms of songwriting
More talented than his playing abilities, though, are his composition skills. Yes he is a music professor, but still. I can write similar riffs, but i cant come CLOSE to the he layers and transitions in and out of melodies. His technical abilities are also just as sound. Hes quite the amazing song writer, youre right!
The only artist that can somehow always remind me of how mortal and grounded I am while simultaneously laying me on a cloud in heaven itself. Thankyou Andy
I just love that Andy is at once capable of sculpting these meaningful emotional masterpieces, but also willing to show he doesn't take his work or his music so seriously that he can't have fun. He adds depth to many of his pieces by jumping out of deep introspection and reflection into a sort of dance. You can see what I mean by comparing either side of the 1:05 mark. He shows us almost unrestrained joy for a time and then returns to ponder the deeper aspects of things.
For some reason (pardon the pun) acoustic guitar gets to my soul more than say, piano, or even vocals. Nothing gets the lump in my throat the way songs like this and For My Father do.
Like honestly.... How the hell do you even come up with something this amazing??.. Anyone who actually plays the guitar, especially if you play a lot of Andy's or Antoine Dufour's music, understands more than someone who doesn't play just how unbelievably brilliant, and beautiful this is...
+iloveregedo I sometimes feel like these men close their eyes & that's what they hear in their head ... This is incredible...Such a gift from them to share it with the world
I just wanna quit playing my electric and start doing this... this music gives me the greatest release of tension and anxiety that I have ever felt. I want to learn how to play like this.
GP Parker yeah I play almost all acoustic now but grew up playing Electric. acoustic allows so many difference nuances and little things you can do to add personality to your playing that electrics just can't cut.
GP Parker do it its amazing! just enjoy yourself and enjoy the ride. have a listen to Tommy Emmanuel too. He started off with electric but plays acoustic fingerstyle now.
I enjoy both of these instruments. People always see acoustic and electric as the same instrument but I always think of them differently! There is a guitarist called plini that will change you perspective on electric guitar
Absolutely brilliant of Andy to add the cool little pre-chorus breakdown part, I love how the tempo and feel changes into the happy sounding breakdown thing. I hope he never runs out of ideas for new material! Amazing
The joy shows in his face... Beautiful and kind music like this can really cheer any person up... Few people can play so well and enjoy this feeling of serenity at the same time.. Keep on being happy dude!
Look at his face as he plays. Now there is feeling music and there is this. This is beyond feeling. At this point the music is the entirety of reality for the musician. It's a state any musician can enter. A state of meditation/altered consciousness.
Watch an old video of Joe Pass. He'd play something especially sweet and look like it hurt him to do it. I called it the "wince of joy". Very engaging, wonderful guitarist.
this specific intro really speaks well with me. theres so much emotion coming out of that guitar and knowing the story behind this piece really completes the work. Amazing is really an understatement.
ever since I discovered your song drifting. I've been hooked on your music. you are truly gifted Andy! thank you for sharing your talent with the world. 👏👏👏👏
To Mr. Michael Greenfield: Please expand your manufacture, your guitars are like from another planet. This G4 is by far the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen. I've seen this one live a few years ago, just standing there on the stage before Andys concert began. Only the sight was magical, the sound was immense. So please share your knowledge to some more apprentices, so there will be more and maby affordabable Greenfield Guitars out there some day. Kind regards from germany, A prospective luthier
Well firstly I just gotta say this is stunningly beautiful work, all around! A lovely composition, played with extreme precision and sublime feeling on a gorgeous-sounding guitar recorded with exceptional audio clarity, and with top-notch filming and editing to boot! Kudos all around! Secondly, I have to wonder how much of this lovely tune was Andy improvising? I've listened to it a bunch and I'm hearing a number of phrases/lines that happen only once in the body of the tune. I especially love the beautiful linear run he makes starting around 0:57 (very "jazzy" if you ask me) that immediately leads to a very different-feeling section, which he hints at again later but not with the same exact style and attack. Also at the break around 2:32 when he stops tempo for those gorgeous open harmonics, these to me feels "suggested" but not "mapped out". Anybody else care to comment on this?

Look up Little Tybee sometime, that man does insane things on a guitar
Same bro I was big into metal until I discovered Calum Graham and Andy. It’s all I play now, haven’t touched a pick in years
I am much older than you, and Andy was my inspiration to throw my picks away too.
I recently got back into the electric, bought a strat and have been learning some Clapton & Mayer. Came back to learn the intro for this sweet tune though!

hahahaha yes!!!
I play certain Andy McKee songs for my kids at night before bed... gets them to sleep, and gets me in the right mental space too. Works like a charm.
Andy is and always will be a treasure.
You are also a treasure man. Big fan of yours and thanks for sharing your music with us.
I completely lost myself when he was playing. When he stopped I forgot where I was. Wow!
That guitar sounds so beautiful in his hands.

Zach Turner what gets me is how he looks like he isn't even trying! Brilliant is the only word.
The Intro is the best part.... its one of those "take me back when" melodies
+James F I agree with your observation. [Tyneside, England.]
damn right
pepperidge farm remembers...
Literally just learned the intro for that reason, I can play it for hours no lie lol
@@sc7244 If he would have made the whole song like the intro, it would be great.
Andy Mckee has gotta be the best songwriter for solo acoustic guitar. His melodies are so unique and interesting and work so well on one instrument even though it sounds like about 3 or 4 guitars being played!
+Camilo James Maybe you should check Michael Hedges, one of the Andy's heroes ;)

A guitar player can slap, pop, tap and shred all he/she wants but true talent always lies within the composition of melody. Just an amazing song!
Your music spreads such positivity... thanks for the smile Andy!
Whenever Andy plays I travel into different dimension, a more kind of a peaceful world. Thank you Andy for composing such beautiful songs.

+iloveregedo Well said :)
+iloveregedo
Well said, I agree !!!
+iloveregedo I sometimes feel like these men close their eyes & that's what they hear in their head ... This is incredible...Such a gift from them to share it with the world
+iloveregedo He's been playing since year 0 i guess..
True that bro
This song deserves at least 4 times the number of views now
I just wanna quit playing my electric and start doing this... this music gives me the greatest release of tension and anxiety that I have ever felt. I want to learn how to play like this.
That's exactly why I swapped to acoustic fingerstyle. There's something uplifting and peaceful about it.
GP Parker yeah I play almost all acoustic now but grew up playing Electric. acoustic allows so many difference nuances and little things you can do to add personality to your playing that electrics just can't cut.

Try covering more basic fingerstyle songs and working your way up - ideas will come with inspiration!
Worked for me!!
I love the look on his face, he's so happy and so in the zone! And I think this sounds better than the official EP version
Agreed
Absolutely brilliant of Andy to add the cool little pre-chorus breakdown part, I love how the tempo and feel changes into the happy sounding breakdown thing. I hope he never runs out of ideas for new material! Amazing
Add this to the top best recordings of "The Reason"
it's not only his music its how he react with the guitar ,it's too adorable and soothing to see!god bless you man
Eyes closed is always an indication of a guitar master.
The joy shows in his face... Beautiful and kind music like this can really cheer any person up... Few people can play so well and enjoy this feeling of serenity at the same time.. Keep on being happy dude!
That grin andy makes at 3:23 sums up this entire song. So much joy shown in his facial expression there.

WOW! I am blown away! Andy, you are a genius! a gift to our.world!
this specific intro really speaks well with me. theres so much emotion coming out of that guitar and knowing the story behind this piece really completes the work. Amazing is really an understatement.
This is a man with talent so great that I feel as if there is no one else that can get every thing there is out his guitars.
I keep coming back to this song. Such a nice tune.

Great man, with the great Gitar. Perfect !!
The best yet.
Beautiful piece of music...
Wow, what a piece. Just love it :)
Very impressed from the 0 guitar farts and string slide scratching. Its amazing technique.
Amazing guitarist and composer!
Very obvious inspiration from Leo Kotke’s “Snorkel”, and it doesn’t go unappreciated!! This is quite the tribute to another guitar legend
One small section is remotely similar but not enough to call it a citation.
Why is there not a button (heart ) that one can press to say that they love the music?
Andy has outdone him self with reason, can't get enuf.
12 oz in!! this his makes SO much sense!!
Qué viaje, gracias !!
Love the song! And the Ziggs T-Shirt! :D
Flawless
Just amazing!

Hermoso. ....Expresar.
