    You are so kind and gracious in how you talk through Andy’s decisions with him(I’m over here chanting ‘trash it, trash it!’). Our family is hoping to move in the next couple of months, and I hope to be as considerate as you while helping my husband declutter some things before then!

    • @jemma50

      I agree, Laurelin! I was chanting with you - trash it! LOL Erica was so patient, even though I could see she probably wanted to chant along with us over those CDs. ;) Andy is quite a sentimental guy.

    • @vzeimen
      @vzeimen 3 роки тому +1

      I agree, I say trash it as well and maybe someday Andy will too but it has to be in his own time. I think people have an idea that if they save something it's going to be worth something but these days things are so mass produced that if it's recent, it's not going to be worth anything. And even if you have valuables that you've collected, they are only worth something if someone wants them for a price. You're either a collector or a dealer of old things. Andy is a collector as many of us are.

    To Andy: I struggled with my music collection as well. I got my breakthrough when I realized it was all illegally downloaded at a time I couldn't afford to buy music. I treated myself to a subscription service that had most of my collection and uploaded the special versions I could not find online. Then inlet go of the physical cd's. Bonus part: the subscription gives me easy access to music I never knew existed, all without stealing from the artists!

    Sorry Erica, but I cried, my husband was a brass bands man and he has been gone now eight years. I found the frugal horn mouthpiece and he exercised with, he played Tuba to. When he got a deliberating illness PSP he never complained and the last year in the nursing home he used it every day until he couldn't. I am now getting rid of nearly all my stuff it is a struggle as I am doing it alone. Thank you for being kind and it's wonderful your husband is doing this while he can. You are bringing me joy again. Have a wonderful Christmas a hot one here I hope in Australia.

    I needed to watch your video so much today. My current life is in the pits. I am contemplating retiring five years before I thought I would because life at my school is not fun anymore. I am finding teaching to be harder each day. I was lucky enough to Zoom with my husband yesterday. I needed the laugh out loud that the two of you provided me.

    I’ve gotta be honest: the boxes a year and a half ago gave me anxiety just watching you look at them. You’re doing so great! In the last year or so, I think you have surpassed me in my minimalish journey, and we started around the same time… except I learned early in life not to get attached to things, so I started off with less. YOU ROCK!!!

    Awh, this was a great video. Andy was so real with his feelings, and such a good example of how to figure out how and when to part with or keep things. I guess you two have done so much sorting and such that now it has become not necessarily easier, but you are more skilled at seeing the bigger picture for the future. I like the way you think things through, and do actually keep some things that are important to you too, and just don’t force yourselves, but are still keeping it real. That’s why I like “minimalish”. Thanks for sharing. Good job you two!!

    I used to have a big lunchbox collection. None were valuable, but I had spent a lot of time and money on them. Like Andy and his cd’s I felt like I wanted to keep they because they were a big part of my past, but honestly they were just taking up space. So, I told myself I could keep my three favorites and I spent a really long time looking at them all and trying to decide which were clear favorites. Turns out none of them were clear stand-out favorites. So next I told myself I would keep things in them and use them to organize stuff around the house. I keep my shoe polish and rags in the Underdog lunchbox and that it literally it. I got rid of the rest and have no regrets. It’s ok to say “ these were a big deal to me at one time, but I have moved on” and let go. I hope Andy’s mancave doesn’t stay a fantasy forever, I hope he makes it happen. He is a hard working, loving family man and he deserves a space.

  • @jemma50

    Wow, Erica! You are miles ahead of Andy in letting go of sentimental stuff! Of course, you have been doing it longer and built up your declutter muscles while he was deployed. Hopefully, he will get there. If he were my husband, I'm not sure I would be as patient as you were as you helped him work through the process. ;) You have a good relationship. ♥♥ Happy Christmas! :D

      She kept literally rooms full of shit for their entire marriage, he supported that I'm sure didn't even complain about it, now he wants to keep a few boxes of sentimental and he should be manipulated and guilted into keeping it? Why does he ever need to "get there" he's fine keeping a few boxes if that brings him joy and contentment

  • @sinkintostillness
    @sinkintostillness 3 роки тому +1

    I can't wait to see your process with photos!
    I started much like you just collecting them in one area. Then one day I labelled boxes by family member and just commited to not even really looking at the photo but throwing them into the correct family/ family group and working through that pile. (I trashed some instantly at this stage - my grandad had a lot of photos from his ship at sea, there's no need to hang onto 100's of wobbly horizon photos!😂)
    Working one box at a time, it was a long process and I was lucky to have a spare space I could do it and leave it in until I was ready for another round. It took months!
    The next stage was to pick a family member and try to put those photos into order of age. When done I put them between stiff card and wrapped a sheet of paper round with elastic bands so there was no chance of them getting mixed up again whilst I worked through the rest.
    I ended up with piles of "young grandma, old grandma, young grandma and grandad, old grandma and grandad, young grandad, old grandad, grandad and baby dad, grandma and baby dad," and so on.......
    This process took even longer than the last!
    Somewhere around this photo sorting period I decided to get crafty and make my sister a photo box explosion for her birthday, it was amazing as I'd already seen most of the photos I wanted to use for it and could locate most pretty quickly. I made copies and diligently put them back so not to mess up where I'd got to.
    This is where I'm at. Still far too many boxes of somewhat ordered photos. Which I do intend to go through again. I'm imagining ending with one large box which will fit say x10 large albums in organised by family member/group, which is easy to store, but easily accessible to actually look at from time to time.
    I've recently started sorting my baby photos into an album (culling the many duplicates) and will soon move onto my sister's.
    I'm simultaneously sorting mum and dad's wedding photos as their original one was falling apart but there were 2 more inherited from their parents house clear outs. So I'm putting one together using the old stuff (just getting a brand new album didn't feel right) to present them on their anniversary!
    I guess this is a very longwinded way of saying take it in very small stages. I think photos send you on such an emotional roller coaster.
    But I'm also so glad that I committed to sorting them (they'd been in my parents loft for years and my dad was literally about to trash the lot! - maybe good for him for not being so sentimental in some ways, but I feel would've been generations lost just like that if he had!)

    Good to see the last few boxes being sorted. A bit confused on some of the trash items, think they could have been donated; vase, a box of baseballs. The bell bottoms maybe could be sold on Ebay, people do collect vintage clothes. I'd rather see things donated or sold vs going to the land fill. But.....good job on getting to the end of the sorting.

    You said you had 190 boxes when you moved.. But actually a lot were not very full.. So you didn't have that much as a family of 5!
    I packed a total of 90boxes with my ex husbands crap since he moved out.. And he had already taken all his clothes, files etc with him!

    This was awesome. So when he was trying to decide what to do about the CDs I was thinking about how I would break them and do some kind of mosaic art with them and you said fantasy self. I was dying because that's exactly what I was doing, my fantasy self. So I am very crafty but I would say that I have 90% ideas, and 10% I actually do 🤦. Now I have a question. So I started watching you two years ago. It was actually the very first video you did on decluttering and minimalism. You are how I started watching minimal mom because you talked about her. And she's how I started watching Dana K White. So I'm curious, if you hadn't started this channel do you think you would have been so successful in the decluttering, minimalism journey? I'm asking because I have two areas that I really need to work on and I'm strongly considering a channel for accountability. Thanks 😊

    I would keep the mouthpiece as a keep sake. It’s small and pretty and probably good memories

    And Andy, I kept my CD's too. I have a cd player in my car and yes... 90's jams all the way.

    Just a thought, but some of the things you said, Trash, I think could be donated? Just a thought as there might be people out there that do collect items that you may not want anymore. Still usable and in good condition. Thanks for sharing.

    Fabulous effort.
    Maybe it would be best to put all Andy's room items together - all the things he's designated for that space - so you are both aware of exactly what is designated for that space. If you create that room in the basement in this house you'll be able to get everything out and decide how to display and use it. Or, if Andy's room has to wait until your next house - then perhaps a revisit before the move might be an idea if there's a huge number of boxes.
    If Andy's keeping much more than could fit in one room or garage then maybe some hard decision might need to be made. However, perhaps the items will fit nicely into the space. I see those car registration plate looking pretty nice out on a wall - and perhaps a glass display cabinet for the memorabilia - because you're definitely right about the fact that if it's important then sticking it in a box to look at once every five years is hardly the best way to keep it.

    Before you list the mouthpiece on ebay, see how much you can get for the silver content (assuming it's real silver, of course). Most jewelers buy silver (and gold) and you might get more for it that way, depending on weight and current silver prices.
