How to Embroider Eyes on Amigurumi | Baby Safe Alternative to Plastic Eyes on Crochet Animals

- This video shows you in real-time how to embroider eyes on crocheted amigurumi. This example is for amigurumi made with Bernat Blanket Yarn (super bulky weight), and using worsted weight yarn to add the eyes and details. Plastic safety eyes are not ideal for kids younger than 3 so this is a great technique when making stuffed animals and snugglers for babies.

ABOUT SIMPLY HOOKED
Hi, I'm Marcy! I learned how to crochet in October 2012. I wanted to learn something new and decided to give crochet a try. I went to Michael's to buy a beginner's kit and watched UA-cam videos all weekend until I figured it out. I got addicted almost immediately. It is so fun and relaxing! Once I got more comfortable with the different stitches, I started making stuffed animals. They are so much fun to make! Later I began selling on Etsy and at craft fairs. I'm so thankful I stumbled upon the art of crochet -- it has been such a blessing in my life. I love starting every project with a blank skein of yarn and turning it into an adorable plushie for little one's to enjoy. I am originally from the beautiful Lowcountry of South Carolina, and now reside in North Carolina.
Best tutorial on eyes that I have seen! Thanks SO much for sharing! 🤩🤩

I suggest you count how many times you use the black in the first eye to duplicate exactly the other eye.
A very good tutorial, thank you.
Good idea!! And you're very welcome! :)
Thank you for this demonstration. It’s much appreciated. ❤
Of course! Glad it was helpful!
thank you so much for this tutorial I'm making a crochet pig for my niece and didn't want to use safety eyes but I was upset that the yarn eyes I made were too dull. Definitely going to be trying this instead!

Awesome 😎. I use an aluminum wool needle and it's a bit easier to get through. It also has a larger loop that helps with thicker yarn. Love the white highlights! Thanks for sharing, I plan to incorporate this to my stuffies❤
Awesome! Great to hear!!
This was great! I just started and finished my first amigurumi last week and used safety eyes. But now I know how to make regular eyes for little one's. Thank you 🎉
I am sub friend #90!!!

That's so great to hear! Glad it was helpful!!
Thank you so much! I have a hard time getting the eyes round, and the hugging technique you teach makes it easy!
Oh great to hear! Yes, that hugging part is key to roundness! :)
Love this! Well done and clear. Best eye tutorial I’ve seen. Tfs. ❤
Awesome! Great to hear! Thank you!
Love this…thank you!!!❤

Great tutorial. I'm a safety eyes user but I'm going to practice this method. Thanks for sharing.
You're so welcome! I'm the same way, I prefer safety eyes, but it's nice to know this method when I need it. :)
Thank you for the eye tutorial! They turned out so cute. I'm definitely going to be putting this to good use.

thank you for this video! it made perfect round eyes.
Yay! Good to hear!!
Wow!!! This is NOT what I was planning to do! So glad I looked It up New sub! Thank you!
You're so welcome!!
Great tutorial. I have found that long, doll making needles are great for embroidering faces on amigurumi. Also good for sewing pieces together.
Oh true! I love using the long needles. Glad you found this helpful, Dianne! :)
I have no experience making eyes on an amigurumi but I def thought you did it before you close it…. Cool.
I thought that for a long time, too! Glad you found this helpful!
I usually do my features as I go along. No reason you can't use this technique before you close up your sphere.
True! I imagine you could use it both ways!@@EsmereldaPea
I think this works better because I did it before I stuffed and closed it they weren’t where they started.
If you use traditional doll eyes you have to do it before you close it. I prefer to do my faces very last, which is why I prefer embroidery, because you can do it once it's closed!
Wow thankyou so much for this,I'm hopeless at eyes and only just started knitting but making eyes put me off,now I know thankyou
Oh wonderful! That's so great to hear! :)
Thank you! Great tutorial.
You're very welcome! :)
Awesome tutorial!!! Thank you so much for this! Gonna watch your nose and hair videos next! New subscriber!! ❤️
You’re so welcome! Glad it was helpful!! ❤😊
I found this video extremely helpful and clear Thank you
Great to hear! Thank you!!
You should get the Susan Bates 5 inch Weaving Needle. It makes getting across doll parts easier because it's super long. 😊
Oh cool! I will look for one of those! Thank you!!
Yes I bought that too…..use it all the time for my Amigurumi…..
Great tutorial……thanks 😊
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful!
I've just made a magic circle with about six sc stitches the. Stitch it on. I love how it turns out.
Oh cool! I will have to try that!
Awesome, thank you!
You’re very welcome!!
Hi Marcy! Wow , I love the way you did the eyes, great tutorial. I have never made an amigurumi before. I have always crocheted blankets mostly, and hats, shawls, scarves and tops. I saw that you said that you have a website for beginner amigurumies, but I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a crochet tutorial on one. I bought velvet yarn to make a teddy bear, then I bought cotton yarn to make a cute floppy legged giraffe for my granddaughter when she was a baby. She is NOW almost 4! I have not made them. I have been tentative to tackle one on my own. But yours looks so cute that I would love to see a tutorial for it. Do you stuff the body too? This video popped up for me too and I thought , oh, that’s great. I am a new subscriber and hope to see more crochet videos. Thanks! ❤
I'd suggest not using velvet yarn for your first project because it's almost impossible to see your stitches
Aww Sandy that’s so sweet, thank you! I just started this channel and definitely plan to create a video about amigurumi. I’m also working on a “Learn to Crochet” course that will include amigurumi, too! Coming soon! ❤ I stuff the body sometimes, but you’ll notice a lot of my designs have unstuffed bodies (snugglers) so that little one’s can carry them around easier. Velvet yarn can be hard to work with sometimes and cotton doesn’t work great for amigurumi. See if you can find a soft worsted weight acrylic yarn or try Bernat Blanket Yarn (super bulky weight) 👍
@@MarcyMade Thank you Marcy for the advice. I will get some Super Bulky Bernat Blanket Yarn. I am so glad you started this channel and I know you will get many subscribers. Your way of doing tutorials is so easy to follow. You give such good directions while showing us how to do the stitches! Thank you very much and take care. 🥰

You're very welcome!!
Fantastic tutorial. Thank you.
You’re so welcome!! ❤
Thanks so much!
Thank you! I have been searching UA-cam for a week and your tutorial is the best I have found! I have a question, how would you make oval eyes? O have a pattern for super cute dogs and they call for making the eyes on a cricket and I am so not rich lol can't afford that! I want to try and make the eyes with embroidery, any tips you have would be greatly appreciated 😊
Hi Jennifer! That is so great to hear, I'm glad it was helpful!! To make oval eyes, I'd recommend making that initial straight line over TWO rounds (instead of this example which only covers one round, if that makes sense?) Then, instead of hugging the yarn on the sides until it gets round, only do that about half the time to make an oval shape. I hope that makes sense, it feels hard to put in words lol
Excellent video. I have been crocheting for years but have never mastered the technique of embroidering eyes. Also, can’t embroider a nose on a cat toy. It’s in the shape of a triangle-mine never come out right. Would you be able to do a video on that? Thank you.
You're so welcome! I made a triangle nose video for dog/bear, but it could probably be used for a cat too if you made it less wide. But yes, let me puuurrfect a cat nose ;) and then I'll add that to my queue of videos! Thanks!
You bent the yarn into a half circle around the outside of the eye. How do you keep that yarn from moving towards the center of the eye? What holds the outside yarn in place?
You tie the two tails together of the white yarn, pull tight and tie it a couple of times before stuffing into the head. It stays in place really well as long as it is taught.
Thank you. 😊
You're welcome 😊
Beautiful eyes. ❤
Thank you!! :)
How would you change this if you wanted to do colored eyes (say blue eyes for example)?
I'd just replace the black yarn with blue but keep the white the same. Let me know how it turns out!
I love this! I’m worried about using “safety eyes” on the amigurumi I make for my grandbabies.
Oh good! Glad it was helpful!! :)
Great…I was just about to try.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant! Thank you 🙏🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!
Of course! :)
Thank you. I was definitely doing it wrong.
You’re very welcome! ☺️
If you don’t mind me asking you are these plush yarn machine wash safe too
Hi! Yes, I've heard Bernat Blanket Yarn is machine wash safe (on gentle cycle, maybe put in a pillow case before putting in wash) but I've honestly never tried it myself. The label on the yarn also says it's machine was safe. I need to do a trial run sometime :)
When I first crocheted a stuffy I embroidered the face and then stuffed the head and I was surprised that the features weren’t where I put them!! I was new to this though!😂
Haha! Practice makes perfect right?! :)
Nice tutorial.
Thanks so much! :)
Brilliant!
Aww thank you!! Glad it was helpful! :)
Hey!! Im not sure if this will make sense, but lets just say that my pattern says to add safety eyes between rows 6-7. So how would I embroider them on, since when you embroider them, its on the row and not in between two rows.
Hey! Two options: 1) You could make the eye larger by doing this ... So if it says between rows 6 and 7, then I would insert the needle into the side of the head and come out between rounds 7-8 then go back in between rounds 5-6, so that the part of the eye that is showing, is indeed between rows 6-7.... 2) Or you could just wrap the eye around row 7. It's such a small difference in space, I think it would still look the same if you wrapped the eye around one of the single rows, if that makes sense?
@MarcyMade yeah, that makes sense. Thanks!!
Thank you!!!
You’re so welcome!!
Great! Thanks!!!
Of course! Glad it was helpful!
Thank you soooooo much this made it feel less intimidating for me. I need to do hello kitty eyes and have been putting it off. Tomorrow I attack!😂thanks again I not so scared!❤
Aww that's so good to hear! You're very welcome!!
I have been looking for this. No matter how careful I am, I know my Texas heeler Roxanne is going to get ahold of one of my crocheted pieces. I don't want to use safety eyes.
Oh good! I'm glad it was helpful!!
A very helpful tutorial but I feel it would have been even better if a lighter coloured yarn was used for the head. I found there wasn’t enough contrast between the colours of the head & the eyes, making it difficult to see at times.
Good point! I can make another video with lighter colors.
@@MarcyMade Thank you, that would be wonderful as I make Amigurumi toys for babies & like to avoid using safety eyes.
Why make eyes in a dark yarn ball? Difficult to understand.
Good point! I’ll use a lighter color next time! Thank you!!
I needed this video specifically because I made a bear with dark yarn and the black eyes didn’t stand out enough. This was perfect - thank you!
Lots of crochet animals are made with dark colors of yarn , this was a perfect demonstration of how to do it on dark yarn , very helpful .thanks so much ❤
Thank you for this!!
Of course! Glad it was helpful!
