Recently when I was only 8 months old, I got really sick, had a feel cut on my left side and my brain got damaged. It basically then caused my whole right side to get weak and I had a stroke. Now I only have one hand to use, which is my left hand. I honestly want to try to find a way to do more things with only one hand for myself. Right now, I m only 15 years old. I still love myself the way I m but I want to work harder and harder to accomplish more things with one hand.
Thank you for this video! It helps me understand your situation better and helps me write a comic with a little boy loosing his arm in an accident and make aware of that situation. 🙋♀️
I am from Nepal...I lost my bf and my right hand in an accident. In my experience some works may be difficult to do with 1 hand but its not impossible.I cut my nail myself...As a fellow sis i want to tell you never give up and be thankful to god atleast we have one hand...Just imagine brother how difficult it would be if we didn't have both hands....love you brother.
He can have self confidence because he works hard and doesn't focus on what others think. This man is doing his best in spite of his differences, not because of them. Listen to his last bit in the video and you'll understand.
I know this video is 4 years old but I'm hoping you will still see this. My son had a stroke in-utero which affected the left side of his body and his left hand is basically unusable. I'm on the search now to find any info I can on teaching him how to be independent. I try to do everything in my life with one hand so that I can learn how to teach him to do it also. Somethings are definitely harder than others and that's why I'm here. ❤️
How old is your son? I was over 11 pounds at birth because my birth was 2 weeks later than it should have been. As a result I have what's called obstetrical brachial plexus injury. obpi means the nerves on my left side were torn away from the spinal cord and thus I have a short left arm and small left hand both with very limited use. I'm telling you this because I've never heard of having a stroke in-utero, and I was wondering if it is possible that your child may have suffered an obstetrical brachial plexus injury. Are the nerves still intact or were they torn off the spinal cord? One of the ways my parents helped me to become independent is by hiring a physical therapist to come to our home and teach me how to tie my shoes. At that time my brother who was 5 could already tie his own shoes but I was 8 and still couldn't tie my shoes. That experience of learning to tie my shoes changed my life. The one armed man who taught me how to tie my shoes also told me that it would be easier for me to tie my shoes then it is for him to tie his own shoes, but he was able to tie his own shoes with just his one hand. I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any questions please do ask. Best wishes.
Thank you so much for this. We are getting ready to take in a disabled adult who has paralysis on one side and in trying to understand what she will be able or unable to do, I found you.
Not a question...but just a comment. This might sound weird..but from just seeing this one, short video.. I can tell that you are an absolutely awesome guy. Thanks for making me smile. Have a good day.
My disability is temporary, (broken wrist) but the other day, I broke a nail on my good hand. Asked my husband to cut it. He cut way too short into the quick, and still left the corners sharp. Im going to have to have my daughter come over and cut my nails until i can use my other hand again.
I found this video because I won't have the use of my right (dominant) arm and hand for 8 weeks. For you this is normal. From the little I saw of you I must say I truly admire you. Stay well, I think your future is bright!
As a fellow one-armed person, I can totally relate. I was also born without my lower left arm, just like you. Eventually, getting a good prosthesis solved all of the issues that you are bringing up. Holding a fork tightly, gripping wet/cold things... It even gives me an advantage when it comes to fighting. :) My emphasis here is on *good* in good prosthesis, because I have tried them all: Body-powerd hook and the standard pinch-grip myo were not for me, because they didn't solve these issues. For me, a multiarticulate hand (an i-limb) with a very good socket (I had go to through several prosthetists before the socket was good enough) did the trick. I know these things are expensive and I am fortunate enough to live in a country where health insurance covers them. Maybe you have addressed this before in another vid, but maybe that is something for you to consider down the road. But I really enjoy your openness and confidence about your disability - I wish I had had a little more of that when I was your age.
Wow this means so much, thank you for sharing and also watching. I myself have not tried various prothesis, let alone thought about doing it, but you're right, its the small things that make it not worth while in the end. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I plan to make more discussing the ins and outs of our lives without 2 hands :D
Congratulations cause you can solve this kind of problems using your prothesis, but in my case i've tried to wear elctrical or mechanical prothesis, but they were not confortable for me in my daily tasks. I've choose not wearing it.
I was born with an arm exactly like yours and when it comes to clipping my finger nails I simply put the clippers on my upper thigh holding them with my nub keeping them balanced and clip my nails by pressing down on the clippers. Enjoyed your video!
... I have both arms but my right one doesn’t work I was shot in the face in a tragic situation ... and the bullet it lodged in my spine and they can’t do surgery to take it out because it would be fatal so I have nerve damage and I had to learn to walk again and my right arm does not work because of where the bullet is and self confidence is definitely hard but I get through it but just be happy and blessed that I am alive but you are absolutely amazing and a inspiration ... I’m nervous to just put this out there because I know a lot of people can just down right be mean but if you can make a whole video I can write a comment
im missing my arm in the same spot as you also from birth and its interesting how your experience seems much more like mine than most amputees? and yeah my shirts always got a wet condensation spot also. btw i highly recommend putting the nail clippers on your knee and pressing down with your arm, its how i hold the brush when i paint my nails.
Thanks man this is cool! I'm tryna read myself up a little bit on things like this cus one of my best friend recently lost his right hand in an accident so I want to be kind of like prepared on how to help him with things
"To have self-confidence, you need to love yourself and to love yourself means to love your self-image but to love your self-image means you can't compare yourself to everyone around you but that's hard to do when your shirts don't fit you the same as everyone else and you'll notice that lack of symmetry and you really want that symmetry but you'll never get it and all you can really focus on is achieving inner symmetry but it's hard to achieve inner symmetry because you notice the difference but the difference between me and everyone else is that my differences can't be hidden like everyone else's differences. My differences are worn on my sleeve-or my short sleeve- and I guess that means I have to be twice as confident, twice as sure of myself otherwise I just let it define me, but it doesn't define me. It's only a piece of me not the whole me. I guess that's the point it's not the whole me. Right?"- Mr.Gracias I couldn't have said it better myself :-)
I have one hand too.. The most powerful thing to fight with is yourself because when you have no fears, life is more and more beautiful. After that the second powerful thing is have girl friend (let alone to getting married) because when grils don't know you don't have a hand, thier behaviors are so cool with you, but when they know , they behave such poor guy with you. I got an ulna nerve injury last year a glass cut on my right hand my right and is paralyzed and I'm right handed but I practice with my left hand everyday I use my left hand for every task now I'm a farmer an agronomist.
Hi MrGracias! I noticed that you didn't mention the use of prosthetics. You should look into what kinds of prosthetics are out there if you haven't done so yet. My situation is a little bit different than yours. I have an obstetrical brachial plexus injury on my left side. This means the nerves that would have serviced my left arm and hand were torn from the spinal cord during birth and as a result I have very limited use of my short left arm and small hand. I have made some prosthetics that make it possible for me to do some things that I couldn't otherwise do. I made a prosthetic that made it possible for me to play a guitar. I see you have some use of your disabled arm and I think that with the right prosthetic, or prosthetics, you can get some more use from your injured arm. Best Wishes 👍
I give thanks for this usefull video from Barcelona. I'm missing my left arm and I have a small stump underneath my left elbow, just like you. I just wanted to add that I cut my nails using a nails cutter but I support it in the pectoral area for safety. I do the same thig to hold the fork when i want to cut food.. A very difficult thing for me to do is tying my sport shoes laces. I always have to buy Velcro sneakers or buying trekking laces. One thing i haven't had the chance to do is changing a diaper.
I have both hands but ever since I've seen Finn from adventure time with one arm I just can't help but wonder how it could be to have only one arm, but the main thing I wouldn't like it is cause playing video games would be a looot harder and I love video games, and also climbing around or even cutting stuff
i have the same left hand. fot cuting ur nails u can ezly use ur toes for that just need to set down. if i could speek english better i could say how .
I also have one hand I was very sick when I was a baby and my doc made a mistake with my hand and I lost it I had a hand but know I don’t but what can you say it’s pretty unique and cool
Thank you, Mr G!! This is all very lucid and understandable. Who does cut your finger-nails then (you don't bite them!)? But Point 7 - you had your self-confidence UNTIL you got to this last point, I felt. I had thought writing with a pen and keeping the paper or pad still might have been hard too?
Brother, i don’t have the time to get too extensive with this. However, you couldn’t be more wrong on some of the things you are saying. A lot of what you say can’t be done simply comes from your lack of ability. There is an apparatus for everything. Still, your dedication determines your success. Cutting meat, basketball and fighting are all contingent on your abilities. I would love to share a day with you to allow you to grow a bit more with your situation. Peace ✌🏾

You can go to any nail salon & have your toes nails & hand nails trimmed & files. Of course you have to pay them but having a foot massage feel great.
