    This scene is fun is because Diane is being subtle to Bojack in how she knows what happened in New Mexico and making Bojack recount it was a clever way to invoke anxiety in the audience. Did you actually think a victim would watch a show with their abuser's face promoting it everywhere? You're not making any sort of point, that makes no sense.
      Also, she tried to intervene with Bojack SO many times to help him, he refuses help in every form and this was an act of desperate measure to get him to confront his shit. He wouldn't even begin to do it until he was forced to own up to his shit in the live television interview. In most contexts it would be fucked up, but in Bojack's context, he escalated it to this point. He really left no other options for help. Penny would NEVER be watching Philbert, she quote for quote "doesn't want to see him again, doesn't want to see him at ALL" (her own words when Bojack tried to visit her again)
      I had abusive people in my life who went on to do pretty well-known projects and I know I don't watch them because of who I associate it with.

    So I seem to have viewed this scene very differently from everybody else. I felt like this was equal parts Diane calling him out and covering for him. The woman, I’m blanking on her name, was threatening to leak that audio of him with the journalist. By making him say these lines that audio is no longer a danger. But at the same time that look she gave him is just total malice. She knows what he did and he can’t tell anybody about it. And that’s even worse than it coming to light

    • @richardparker2555
      @richardparker2555 Рік тому +53

      I disagree. She did the right thing. I think this was a slap in the face he needed.
      Bojack just sabotage Daines relationship with her therapist and then didn't take that therapist for himself. Yet he treated Daine like she was his therapist. Daine was never equiped to talk someone who has an attraction to underage girls and almost crossed that line. Even if he didn't have that issue it was still really unfair of him to push his emotional baggage on her like that or force himself into every aspect of her life. Not to mention the scandal with Penny was also a big betrayal of Daines trust. Daine is a feminist writer who has openly spoken out against Hollywoo crourption towards women. She took a lot of heat for calling out Hank Hippopopalous for being the Bill Cosby of Hollywoo. Up until she learned about Penny she belived Bojock, inspite all his flaws, was different from a guy like Hank. He sold an image of himself that he was changing into a better man when in reality he was hiding the worst things he did to Penny, Charlotte, Sarah Lynn and others from Daine. So it was a crushing blow for her to learn that he has actaully been going against all her core values this whole time and was using her feminism only to help his public image and not because he believed it. Daine did ask if he wanted to talk about anything but he wouldn't take it. Thats because he never really wanted her help at all. He just wanted her to him to tell him that he's a good guy and everything is okay so he can feel good about himself.
      So he was being both a manipulative toxic freind, a hypocrite and real sick creep who won't learn his lesson.
      Daine needed to do that both for herself and him. She was showing him that she has a clear limit with how much BS from Bojack she's willing to take and giving him a fair warning that sooner later the truth will come out.

    The major thing that everyone seems to forget about this action is that Diane released this story WITHOUT consulting Penny, the girl who was literally given trauma by BoJack Horseman. Diane got swept up in her own rage so much that she STEAMROLLED any sense of morality and just wanted to get the one up on BoJack. You can call someone out on their behavior, but going to that kind of a length, especially when it concerns other people, is NOT the way to go. This is not a "Yass Diane!" moment. She is not exempt from criticism just because she isn't BoJack and is a feminist.

    Many people seem to be forgetting the larger context in this episode. Diane was pressured into (wrongly) acting like this. Yes, Diane was cruel for putting Bojack on the spot here, but Bojack spent the whole episode tormenting her. He belittled her for going to therapy and sabotaged her relationship with her therapist so that he could keep her in the same place as him emotionally, even though she was struggling so hard to take care of her mental health. So I get why Diane kinda lost it and tried to put him in his place.

      Any potential harm that this could’ve caused to Penny just reflects a flaw in Diane’s character - in her struggle to do right she inadvertently hurts people. But Diane is no more self absorbed than the other characters - Mr Peanutbutter alienated all his ex wives, Princess Caroline manipulates her clients and Bojack is clearly a narcissist. Diane isn’t worse than any other character; this is just a show about flawed people.

    Why are people in the comment section making Diane more responsible for Penny's wellbeing for writing a scene about something she has limited context on, than Bojack who is the one who did what's being portrayed instead??
    People love to say that "Diane should have talked to Bojack" or that she "crossed the line" about this scene, as if he didn't spend the entire episode not just not wanting to talk honestly with her but making her shoulder the responsibility for HIS emotional wellbeing, and that's without mentioning the massive walking over HER boundaries by making her lose her therapist and then not even bothering to commit to therapy on top of it after all his shanenigans.
    I get that maybe it's easy for people not to understand how awful all that was because it's tinted with the ridiculousness of the therapist changing the names and appearances, and us seeing it as her narration, but come on.

    Diane for putting a teen’s trauma on blast for entertainment purposes, specifically a teen she doesn’t even know personally. While I agree it’s unlikely Penny could watch this, her trauma is shown on television on full blast and she has no idea, which is messed up. Diane technically used her as a way of revenge.
    Bojack, obviously for disrespecting Diane’s boundaries and for what he’d done to Penny. I need to admit, what he’s done is MUCH worse than Diane and that should go without saying. He’s quite literally a groomer and even went as far as STALKING penny at her college. It was a crazy way for Diane to approach it, but Bojack has NEVER taken direct confrontation well and he's shown that time and time again, with every ex friend and female friend he's been inappropriate with. He never wants to consider that he's at fault and he won't, he's always quick to try and rationalize his shittiness. That is his default and it's never changed, we see him reject direct confrontation by new people in every single season. He never would've tried to get help if the message that he is incredibly fucked up wasn't shown to him like this.
    Diane has tried *SO* many times to tell him directly what is wrong with him, he will not listen to anyone who has tried to help him AND WE KNOW THIS AS THE VIEWER! He really forced her to do this in a dramatic way, he literally escalated everything and makes everything have to be done the harder way, because his pride is too strong.
    Also, Penny would literally never watch Bojack's shows because his face is plastered all over the promos. That arguement "what if Penny saw this??" Makes no sense, most of us victims tend to stay the hell away from whatever projects our abusers are apart of and feel sick even knowing that they're still actively apart of something that big. I get what you guys are trying to say, but Bojack really, really drove her to this point. He wouldn't have listened to her directly, or anyone.
    I'll take it if someone comes up with a different hypothetical of how she could've brought this up, but I honestly don't think he would've taken away anything from it if it wasn't to this degree of passive aggressive and dramatic.

    lotta comments here hating on diane for this and although I wouldn't call myself a fan of her yall are beingunreasonable. penny or anyone who almost got sexually assaulted by an actor wouldn't watch said actor's show especially not when they're STARRING in the show. for the people who said her friends watching might call her and tell her about it, everything said here was too vague! they mentioned new Mexico and 17 years old that was it! the only way they could've even *suspected* that it was about penny was if she had told them the whole story and, as far as we know, only her mother knows (plus, if her friends had known they wouldn't even be watching his show anyway). the reason bojack was panicking here was because he recognized that it was his own words being thrown back at him. but as far as anyone else knows nothing here connects to penny. even diane doesn't know penny.
    as for all the bojack sympathizers, fuck him. he did not deserve to be able to move on like nothing happened, he did not deserve to get away without facing any consequences, he did not deserve to just be able to push it to the back of his mind and forget about it. dude was comparing himself to diane whose greatest sin was having a failed marriage. dude was talking about how he didn't need therapy. talking about how he's "too smart" for therapy. he deserved a reminder. to yall saying he could've been arrested; again, as far as anyone knows it's just a script. just be grateful she didn't report him herself cuz who's to say he won't try it again? who's to say he isn't one bad day away from drinking himself to oblivion and trying it with another underaged girl? there'd be no charlotte to walk in this time. if that were to happen diane(spanakopita and the reporter too) would've been responsible for not speaking up.

    I'm super at odds with Diane in this scene. A lot of people are mad at her for bringing up the Penny story, but guys, Penny is a girl like many others and things like that happen in a lot of movies. Besides, I really don't think She would see Philbert. However I am angry with Diane for reviving Bojack his trauma, Bojack harms the lives of others but consequently harms his own as well. When he said "i am the one who suffered the most for my actions" i think it was A LITTLE true, surely it is not what remains worse but it is what remains bad anyway. I'm not saying that he shouldn't take responsibility. The fact that he was wrong does not justify Diane using this story to strip Bojack and remind him that he is a horrible person. Diane had nothing to do with Bojack and Penny thing, She had to mind her own business and she was immature (If i have made some grammatical errors i'm sorry, i am italian)

    What is this show supposed to teach me? Stay away from toxic people like Bojack? Or see them as human beings with morals? This show is great and all, but the messages are confusing when it comes to Bojacks character. Yes, everyone else I understand. The only person I relate to is Diane as a writer and being verbally abused. I just don't get the point of following Bojack to not have him barely change at the end. Yes, he has guilt, but even at the end of it, he's still asking Princess Carolyn for acting parts. What?
    Edit: and I know that humanizing your villans to understand them is part of character, but a lot of comments keep comparing this show to real life. Am I supposed to feel bad for a murder?

    • @pdfbanana
      @pdfbanana 2 роки тому +63

      Definitely stay away from toxic people like Bojack is my personal take. But yes, I think part of the message is that change is possible, people who do awful things aren't innately "bad," etc. I also relate to Diane the most, and I think it's important for her arc that she cuts Bojack out of her life
      But I wouldn't call Bojack a murderer. That's just getting into semantics of how you want to describe Sarah Lynn's death, but I don't think it's murder. He's clearly changed by the end. And he's still flawed. And he "deserves" all the consequences he's ended up with, but I think another of the show's messages is two-fold: your actions will have consequences, but there's no moral force that determines someone "deserves" any specific punishment or suffering. Bojack's character is just an example of what can happen when a selfish, but not evil person is the victim of terrible circumstances: they can do awful things. They shouldn't be let off the hook for them, but they can definitely change. And in my opinion Bojack is definitely a changed horse by the finale

    • @TheDiamondSlayer1
      @TheDiamondSlayer1 2 роки тому +23

      I think what you're saying is kind of the point, you're not supposed to like Bojack or relate to him (to a point, you obviously can relate to his childhood, addiction, etc) but i don't think the show is trying to sway you in any way, that's why the ending was the way it was, it wasn't a concrete ending, for all we know bojack could have gotten out of prison and OD'd. I don't think you're supposed to watch this show and be taught anything specific

    • @pradeepdungdung4379

    • @spockman4250
      @spockman4250 2 роки тому +11

      I also think the message is not to be Bojack. Not necessarily the level of awful stuff he does but rather the reasons. He’s selfish and narcissistic but in a believable way where he expects his friends to revolve their life around him simply because they’re his friends. He excuses his behavior because of the environment he grew up in, his drug abuse, or the Hollywood system he’s a part of. He feels remorse for his actions but tries to dodge their consequences and does nothing to change the behavior that lead to those actions. These are all mentalities that an average person can easily fall into, and as the audience we see how from his point of view all his actions seem to make sense. We can judge him for those actions but we can see why he did them. So I think that part of the moral is to not only see these mentalities in others but also ourselves, and while we might not go to the extremes Bojack does, we still have to avoid making decisions based on those mentalities.

Bojack is fully responsible here, and Diane didn’t do anything wrong here. At most, it was passive aggressive and rude. All she did was make Bojack aware that she knew what happened in New Mexico. She's in the right morally as far as I'm concerned. Bojack needs to face consequences and accountability for what he did- anyone who does stuff he does needs to - but I think what Diane did was tactically unwise. Effective at getting to Bojack and freaking him out, but in real life (which the show is quite close to), when you have some dirt on an abusive/toxic person who you want to hold accountable, it's never a good idea to make them aware you know it until you have all your evidence and preparations and you're fully ready to make your move. What Diane did here was rash and could've put herself and even Penny and Charlotte in danger. That's the trouble with abusers who have more than one victim- other victim's stories are not yours to tell, so any attempts at exposing one means you need to worry about more safety than just your own. There's definitely a moral question there. But also, when it comes to what Bojack did, his mental health should be damaged by what he did. He shouldn't get away unscathed. Diane is not responsible for how Bojack deals with a blow to his mental health. I'm with Dannythetwo - Bojack was also hurting Diane and taking away a long standing support she needed.

    Not only for Bojack, even when he was vulnerable for the death of his mother, triggering his paranoia and leading to a mental breakdown where he almost kills Gina (That doesn't justifiy the incident with Penny at all).
    But for Penny too, imagine being watching this, maybe she didn't for herself but maybe with some friends or to share time with her bf and then this scene happens...
