Two huge takes from this: 1. I can’t imagine how hard this must’ve been for you and it explains why we maybe haven’t seen you - I hope you’re healing (mentally and physically) but 2. You may have the best friends on planet earth. What beautiful people.
Resident doctor here. Great video to get a glimpse of what it's like to experience a life altering event, the recovery process, and the change in life, perspectives, and abilities that come along with it. Thanks for sharing for the general public. Not very many people open up about this kind of thing.
I’m one month into a talus fracture sustained while bouldering. One doc in Montreal told me this is a rock climbers injury! High impact into the bottom of your foot - makes sense. 10 screws and 2 plates later, I was searching for stories and came upon yours. Thank you! Very comforting to hear from someone who’s gone through it❤
When I was 23 (I’m 46 now) I had back surgery that revealed that I have degenerative disc disease. I try not to think what I’m going to be experiencing in 20-30 years, but I try to be as active as possible without crossing the line of doing anything stupid. I’m glad you’re doing as well as you are. Thank God for good friends!
I had the pleasure of meeting Dean last month when I bumped into him on the street. Really happy to hear your story and see you doing so well, such a strong dude and strong for coming back like a badass. Your friends are so awesome for all they did. So happy for you dude!
Dean, thank you so much for putting this together. I am a fellow filmmaker who just broke my Talus mountain biking a month ago. To get such an honest peek into someone else's journey with this injury is incredibly valuable. Thank you, -Eric
Dean. Thank you for all your videos! They helped me figure out where to move to Pittsburgh 2 years ago, and with your help we found the greatest neighborhood. I wish you all the best. Keep on, my friend.
Man, this really hit home to me. When I was 11, I split my knee from one end to the other down to the kneecap. There was pain beyond pain in recovery but it was also the psychological toll it took on me. That being said, I was young and recovered almost fully over the summer. You had it way worse but I really do empathize with you. I’m glad to see your back making videos.
Thank you for sharing this with us Dean ❤ it goes without saying that it takes a lot of strength to go through that kind of injury, everyone involved in helping you along that journey seems wonderful too!
Thank you so much for sharing this Dean. Not only is it an incredible production but as a physical therapist, it's great to hear the patients side of an injury. You had a very difficult injury but you have a great mindset and I have no doubt you will manage this well. All the best Dean
"Wisdom accelerator" : great way to put it, Dean. You made me think we are never going to injure ourselves at a good time or when we're ready. You can appreciate what you can do and that's what counts. Plus biking feels good and if that's not the biggest win then I don't know what is!
Dear Dean, the story of your foot has inspired me to pay attention when and where I'm walking. Lol.. seriously though I'm glad you're okay and I love all your informative videos about the neighborhoods of this city.
Hi Dean, thanks for making this whole thing. I was sitting on the sofa watching it with my gf. We both love climbing and she had the same injury and just took off her X-fixer and dealing with lots of pain recently. I literally cried when i saw u have to take X-fixer for couple of weeks more. Cuz we know how hard is it. Thanks for sharing the journey with us. It’s good to know what’s coming to us. All the best!❤
Thanks for the update. This is a difficult story to hear. I was thinking - you are still a super talented film maker, something you don’t need to be an Olympic athlete to do. I enjoyed all of your UA-cam work a few years back , and remembered you letting us know about the injury. It sounds like you are becoming able to “go from where you are”. We get another day- we just need to do the best with it we can.
Dean, I'm so sorry about what you've been through. I am so glad you have wonderful friends that helped you. I have chronic pain that I've started to finally get under control and get bits of my life back, and I know that feeling of anger and jealousy seeing people doing things you just can't do anymore. I also have thought about how everyone ends up disabled at some point. Just hearing your voice though gave me a wave of emotion, I've missed your voice!
Looking for anything inspiring to say here, but it appears you’ve gained the gift of clarity. It is a treasure and a curse. Depending on your beliefs this has changed your trajectory or it was always going to be your path to tell your story to help others. I do hope to see more of your style perspective on Pittsburgh and other topics.
Thanks for sharing, I just "fracture my right talus" waiting to see a specialist; but hearing your story has given me faith for the future. (I am 57 years old) and confidence to see this as an opportunity. Hope everything is good with you.
You are not wrong about that glimpse into aging. My profound injury was at age 9. The arthritis as a kid was awful as there was little that could be done in a pediatric case back then. Decades of re injuries, misdiagnosis, and bouts of PT later - I am still able to walk despite the naysayers. Arthritis always in the wings ready to lay me out not withstanding. You've got the right attitude. We have what we have and anything can come and go in an instant. Do what you can and try not to let the frustrations build into those soul sucking swamps. Thanks Dean
Thanks for making this video! I shattered my talus bouldering 8 months ago, and I remember watching this video, which was so helpful in seeing someone else's journey with this injury. Now, 8 months down the track, I find it even more relatable than I did when I first saw it.
Dean, this whole thing is just hart breaking. I'm so sorry you went through all that. Life is ruff at times. I hope the foot keeps getting better. You make such amazing videos, don't let this thing stop you from doing what you're so good at. Your an amazing story teller and the world needs you to keep telling them.
so so so happy you're okay man. You're a genuine legendary yinzer and I understand entirely that struggle of rehab. It's a long road but worth it in the end. So happy to see you have friends that love and care about you and were there for you every step of the way
I’m so glad I took the time to watch this! Even before the spoken conclusion I came to my own conclusion that I need to pause and be thankful for my currently health and mobility as it’s something we all take for granted, especially while we are young. Also I have to say you have some of the best friends imaginable, they are clearly really incredible people that you must feel so lucky to be surrounded by. Thanks for sharing your story!
I remember when you got hurt and I remember you reaching out for help with videos and such and I applied. Took you a few months but you got back to me. And we're so polite in declining my help. I'm happy to see you back. And back exploring Allegheny county. I'm still around if you need some tips or help
I found your channel from the video you made about your peanut allergy (I have one as well) and I have to say the content you make is fantastic. I have only watched "Life With A Deadly Peanut Allergy" and am 5 minutes into this one but I can already tell you are very talented and am in love with your method of story telling. Keep up the good work and I to hope see more videos from you in the future. In the mean time I think I will just watch all of your older videos to keep myself occupied 😂.
Dean, thank you for this unflinching overview of the whole process. The brief look that you gave us shortly after surgery (where you introduced us to the skeleton model ankle) was also amazing, but somehow this detailed view just brings it full circle. The emotional tax of going "back there" must have been a trip, particularly with the straightforward style -- without much of your trademark cinematography or editing magic. The music is still amazing, though. 😉 Sending much love and respect from Rob and me in NH!
Thanks for sharing this . I am so glad you have friends who helped you during this tough time. I have had a bad knee since I was 22 from a skiing accident and for the last 43 years I've learned to do the best I can. I have and will continue to pray for you every Saturday morning !
Thanks for sharing the roller coaster of recovery with your bum foot. One one hand, the caution that doctors start out with seems unreasonable, but it also seems like it takes a lot from the patient to keep working towards their version of a complete recovery. I'm so glad you stuck with it and can do more as a result!
You have some of the most amazing and beautiful human beings that you call friends. I'm sure they think the same of you. Despite the ordeal you had to go through, you are really blessed.
Thanks for the update Dean, I'm very sorry to hear the bum ankle is such a life changing experience. But take solace in the fact that YOU had multiple really close and loved Friends to aid in your recovery dude. It's absolutely BEAUTIFUL to watch and hear all about them special people who dealt with everything in their own lives, then add in Covid and all that right as the World was crumbling into pieces. You, Sir, have an extremely loving and Badass group of friends, Never forget that! I'm sure the time will come, life throws us all curve balls at the most inopportune times, so I'm sure you'll be able to help repay that debt to those loving friends. I bet I've gone back and watched every episode of Neighborhoods at least 4 times over lol. I am SO thrilled to see you're doing better, and I hope it allows you to become more creative and be able to show more of that spirit here on YT. Take care Brother Man 💪
Thanks Dean, your story instills some hope in me. That injury looked so frightening when you first posted about it, but it sounds like you learned a lot and are able to come out of it more hopeful and wary of your life. I can't wait to see what other stories you have to tell.
Man, that was hard to watch. Felt your frustration. Glad you had such a great support team. Really enjoying the newest videos! Regarding your boots: maybe they are custom for your foot? I can tell you that our group of 50's and 60's burg folks went to Spain last year and hiked the 500 mile Camino del Norte. We all used Hoka boots and shoes and they were a game changer. No blisters, plenty of cushion and stability. I really think the extra cushion could be helpful to your comfort. I also imagine you know all about Hoka's but just in case! Love the 'charts and graphs' section btw!
So sorry to hear about what happened. What an awful time to have it happen. But my goodness, to have such caring and loving friends to support you through this is a major blessing.
I also had an talus fracture and done this surgery 3 years ago am exactly in a position like you now. Thank you for sharing your experience I could relate every word you said
Dean, You know that people may be eating dinner when watching your videos. Why upload surgery aftermath? You're unique staying strong through this very frustrating injury. I think your content is fantastic. You can walk and ride so DO IT. We're pulling for you.
Im so glad i watched this. I just fracture my talus after falling from climbing. I had no idea what happened or what the future holds. I am scared about the limitations it could mean for me but this video showed me i am not alone and even with limitations you can be happy. Thank you for spreading your positive message ❤
@sample_001 still on the mend but better thank you. Had an operation a month later and now still on crutches but my foot is a lot less swollen. Not sure what the future will be like still and if I'll be able to do sports again and run or jump but trying to stay positive about it all!
Dean best of luck my man, I wrecked my ankle 5 years ago and didn't get surgery until just this year. Awful thing to happen, but I'm sure you will have a recovery - God has a plan for you, keep pushing dude!
Thank you for your 2 videos about the talus fracture. I broke mine in 3 parts in a boulder accident a couple of months ago. Your videos really helped me in the mental process. Seeing you having the same experience really calmed me down and felt i had someone i could relate too. I have rewatched them many times and soo went to the painfull process. I hope the best for you and your foot, ankle fixation sucks but maybe can be the solution!
Interesting how life gifts wisdom that’ll have longevity only through such intense trials. Glad you’ve taken on the situation in your own way to enrich your life. All the best and be well, Dean.
You are blessed with the most amazing friends ever. Your positive mental attitude helped you recover. Also how many dogs do you have?! Glad you’re back!
This was so inspiring! Good to see you’re doing ok! I had a similar injury experience with a long recovery timeline. One thing that really resonated from your story was that first bike ride. I remember the joy from that first moment of liberation was amazing. Thanks for sharing those vibes!
Awesome video very helpful, thank you.. I fractured my talus about 3 months ago(subtalar open dislocation) neck of the talus wasn’t damaged, two screws put into the back of the talus, after the ex fix, cast and now the boot the stiffness of my ankle is crazy(ice seems to be my bff😂), I have also seen that Tiger Woods had a talus fracture and ended up doing an ankle fusion to degree pain with mobility, my doctor also recommended that if I’m struggling with pain and mobility that, that could be an option down the road. Still early stages for me trying to take it day by day and hope for the best. Hope you’re in a better stage of your recovery and feeling better. Oh my ankle feels loose, my doctor and physiotherapist are against me using an ankle brace when I’m out of my boot(sleeping/laying/etc.), I know my ligaments are damaged, I’m just confused on ankle brace or not…
Your friends are the best & can tell they care about you. If that happened to me, I’d be screwed!! (No pun intended) Thanks for sharing. Keep the vids coming!!
Wow Dean you truly are a fighter! A huge amount of respect for your journey and for capturing it in such a Dean Bog style. Your production quality as always is amazing. Thanks for sharing this Dean and for your narration. I thought randomly of Daniel Day Lewis's my Left Foot and instead replacing it with Dean Bog and his bum foot. Regardless, as always Dean thanks for sharing your story. Keep going.
Damn! I honestly can't even begin to imagine going through that and how frustrating it was and still is. You got some awesome friends though, and that's something that money can't buy. Happy you're making a return to living life and to UA-cam. You got a real gift for filmmaking and storytelling and we missed you. On a side note, would stem cell therapy be any sort of an option?
Kudos for sharing this journey, I went through a journey of dental work and shared it on fb with anyone that wanted to see it, and remove some of the stigma related to having to have major dental work done. sharing and making people aware of things, if for no other reason that they know they are not alone, and others have gone through it. Thanks again for sharing, Loved your early videos and am glad you are back at it to a degree. Keep pushing forward!
This was a beautiful video, thank you. I saw your friend hand you a copy of "Autobiography of a Yogi," it caught my eye but I had to pause and find the exact frame to make sure I was seeing the title correctly haha. If you are interested in that line of books, I would recommend "The Gurus, the Young Man, and Elder Paisios." It is a fascinating memoir of one man's spiritual journey, that took him from his native Greece, where he had spiritual encounters with the local Christian monastics, all the way to India, where he had spiritual encounters with Hindu gurus- even a man claiming to be the incarnation of Babaji. He refers to "Autobiography of a Yogi" in the memoir because many of the westerners he encountered in India were there after having read the book. Should you read the book, I hope it is profitable for you. May God bless you and grant you good health.
Hey mate, long time on see! Sorry to hear about the foot man but the video really came out nice. It really looks like you surround yourself with some amazing people. Wishing you the best homie! ❤
Am the only one who's watching this video for the 15th time I guess, yes! actually am keep counting it. Then I just sit and cry on thoughts of my future and I know it's not gonna get normal again. This is my 111th day of my Talus neck fracture recovery, I made my first step today with lot of pain. Still confused how this man made his first move on his 70th day !!
I hope you're doing well, man. I broke my ankle recently (nowhere near as bad as yours), so I've been coming across a lot of these videos recently XD I think people get more blase about broken bones than is warranted, especially of the ankle. A traumatic injury to an ankle (like a fall :() can be horrifying. Huge cartilage damage, intra-articular broken bones, etc. Maybe not so bad, at least at first, but it's almost always a precursor to severe arthritis of the ankle, which ultimately advances to the requirement of either an ankle replacement (if you're older) or a fusion. So what, you might say? Just replace the joint. Unfortunately, the ankle is one of the highest capability joints in your body, and our artificial replacements aren't close to as good as the natural joint, unlike, say, the hip. Look after your godamn ankles, people. A severe ankle injury is life-altering. They can save your foot, but your foot may never be the same again, and every degenerative change thereafter just takes more function away 😢
I broke my talus bone about five weeks ago, and I wanted to thank you for this sharing this story. My talus bone broke whilst I was scaling down from bouldering. Luckily, it didn’t shatter, there’s just one fairly clean break in the talus neck and another fracture about halfway through the same place as well. Three weeks ago, I got two pins put into my ankle and I now have an estimated 3-9 more weeks of non-weightbearing before I can even consider walking again. Listening to your story about the emotions and experiences you went through and are still going through truly made me feel heard and seen. I hope you’re doing better now.
I broke my talus March 7th. I had the x-fix erector set for the first 8 weeks. Now have 3 titanium screws in my talus and wearing the boot. I am currently trying to transition out of the boot and into walking with shoes. I hope your recovery goes well.
@@sample_001 I am now walking unassisted. I am still taking it easy and cautious and occasionally experiencing pain after an active day. It is continually improving though.
@@kenwike2703Hi Ken, how are you coming along. I was in a car accident.. my driver fell asleep at the wheel while accelerating and hit a tree. I fx my femur and talus. I get the X fix removed Monday. Just scared and would like to see if you could share more with me please about your process and what you are able to do today. Thank you in advance
Shattered my ankle 17 months ago still pretty messed up but one thing i have learned is that hot showers help the most letting the hot water hit it for atleast 10 minutes will loosen it up and feel better and let me do my exercises without pain
I don't think I've ever related so much to a story on the internet hah, April 2020 I broke my Talus while bouldering, 4 surgeries, 3 months in a cast and a year of physio later I was also diagnosed with arthritis. Got my first cortisone injection about 2 years into my injury and it rocked my world. I had the exact same experience that you describe, I was feeling joy and happiness in a profound way for the first time in a long time. Now, after 2 injections I'm starting to think of the damage the cortisone is doing to my joints and contemplating if I should get another shot... Feels like very similar stories although I went through the Swedish healthcare system... Do you have any thoughts on how many cortisone injections to have or potentially fusing the joints?
@@sample_001 hurts! But I'm walking again. Getting stronger but Dr thinks it will be a while for the ligament pain to go away. He also warned of arthritis
I have a question. My talus bone fracture was last year sept 14 2022. I got a plate and screws put in and I'm able to walk but my right foot is a bit pointed to the right with every step that I take. Did you experience your fractured foot to point outwards when you walked? also going up the stairs is still a struggle. I've never met anyone who has been through this so im just curious.
my jaw absolutely dropped when I saw maple wall... I too was inexperienced and went with a friend who was also inexperienced... I was climbing and fell at one point and the tether got stuck so I had no choice but to try to continue climbing up. I then slipped and cracked my head open. I was definitely at that small hospital outside of ohio oyle as well, probably Uniontown hospital? Anyways, thank you for sharing your story and holy cow what a mean fucking rock face

Hey buddy , how you are doing now?
Appreciate that you shoot no matter what you are going through. Impressive. Good story. Thank you for being most excellent.
Speechless. Yet I feel cathartic, because I relate to a lot of this. Wishing you a wonderful life.
Dean,
You know that people may be eating dinner when watching your videos. Why upload surgery aftermath?
You're unique staying strong through this very frustrating injury.
I think your content is fantastic. You can walk and ride so DO IT.
We're pulling for you.
I'm eating right now. Doesn't bother me.
Im so glad i watched this. I just fracture my talus after falling from climbing. I had no idea what happened or what the future holds. I am scared about the limitations it could mean for me but this video showed me i am not alone and even with limitations you can be happy. Thank you for spreading your positive message ❤
Hey buddy , how are you doing now?
@sample_001 still on the mend but better thank you. Had an operation a month later and now still on crutches but my foot is a lot less swollen. Not sure what the future will be like still and if I'll be able to do sports again and run or jump but trying to stay positive about it all!
@@Vargolis Hope you'll recover completely 🤝
Dean best of luck my man, I wrecked my ankle 5 years ago and didn't get surgery until just this year. Awful thing to happen, but I'm sure you will have a recovery - God has a plan for you, keep pushing dude!
You’ve been through so much but man you’re a fighter. ❤
I also had same situation with my ankle and i really feel your feelings, i wish better health condition 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing your story. you are a great voice for the city of pittsburgh.
Hey buddy , how you are doing now?
Interesting how life gifts wisdom that’ll have longevity only through such intense trials. Glad you’ve taken on the situation in your own way to enrich your life. All the best and be well, Dean.
I can't believe I was working at Presby during your whole ordeal. Im glad you're doing better. I most likely cleaned up after you lol
Great to see your face again!
Thanks for sharing Dean, so glad you are better and back to filming!!!!
Hey buddy , how you are doing now?
I'm sorry this happened to you, but glad you have been on the mend! Love your videos
Oh my ankle feels loose, my doctor and physiotherapist are against me using an ankle brace when I’m out of my boot(sleeping/laying/etc.), I know my ligaments are damaged, I’m just confused on ankle brace or not…
This video is making me very lightheaded or I would watch all of it but glad you are back!
Your friends are the best & can tell they care about you. If that happened to me, I’d be screwed!! (No pun intended) Thanks for sharing. Keep the vids coming!!
Thanks for the update, good to hear from you, and so glad you can make videos!
Keep going.
Such a blessing for you to have good friends in Pittsburgh
Happy 20k subscribers brother I'm about at the 8k subscribers Pennsylvania have a lot of growth on UA-cam
Hope to see more videos coming out brother
So glad to see you thriving again ^_^
I'm so glad you are still able to ride a bike. Hope to see you at Kraynick's.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. Continued progress ❤❤❤
Hey mate, long time on see! Sorry to hear about the foot man but the video really came out nice. It really looks like you surround yourself with some amazing people. Wishing you the best homie! ❤
Love you Dean… and Jul too!❤️
wow man! gnarly! you are a strong person to get through this with such a good attitude!
This is so well done
Am the only one who's watching this video for the 15th time I guess, yes! actually am keep counting it. Then I just sit and cry on thoughts of my future and I know it's not gonna get normal again. This is my 111th day of my Talus neck fracture recovery, I made my first step today with lot of pain. Still confused how this man made his first move on his 70th day !!
I hope you're doing well, man. I broke my ankle recently (nowhere near as bad as yours), so I've been coming across a lot of these videos recently XD
I think people get more blase about broken bones than is warranted, especially of the ankle.
I love that you say you're self conscious but you can easily talk to camera next to strangers out in the wild haha
@@kenwike2703 Hey buddy , how are you doing now?
@@sample_001
I am now walking unassisted. I am still taking it easy and cautious and occasionally experiencing pain after an active day. It is continually improving though.
@@kenwike2703 Hope you'll recover completely 🤝
@@kenwike2703Hi Ken, how are you coming along. I was in a car accident.. my driver fell asleep at the wheel while accelerating and hit a tree. I fx my femur and talus. I get the X fix removed Monday. Just scared and would like to see if you could share more with me please about your process and what you are able to do today. Thank you in advance
You sir have some very , Very!!! Good friends , glad your doing better bud and please no more rock crawling 🙂✌🏻
Shattered my ankle 17 months ago still pretty messed up but one thing i have learned is that hot showers help the most letting the hot water hit it for atleast 10 minutes will loosen it up and feel better and let me do my exercises without pain
Hey buddy , how you are doing now?
Glad to see you back. Hail to Pitt!
love ur videos man keep going
Hey buddy , how you are doing now?
Keep up the Good Work
I broke mine and had a subtalar dislocation. No completely shattered but i messed it up pretty good. It was from bouldering
Hey buddy , how you are doing now?
@@sample_001 hurts! But I'm walking again. Getting stronger but Dr thinks it will be a while for the ligament pain to go away. He also warned of arthritis
@@Lucas-qo5go Hope you'll recover completely 🤝
I have a question. My talus bone fracture was last year sept 14 2022. I got a plate and screws put in and I'm able to walk but my right foot is a bit pointed to the right with every step that I take. Did you experience your fractured foot to point outwards when you walked? also going up the stairs is still a struggle. I've never met anyone who has been through this so im just curious.
Hey buddy , how you are doing now?
awesome video
For a second, I thought this was going to be about a deformity involving a foot growing where it shouldn't.
Hopefully no nerve damage/ CRPS like I had
Oh my! Sorry
How can your foot be a bum?
my jaw absolutely dropped when I saw maple wall...
